I wish it was that simple; I have a couple of quarts of Mobil 1 75W-90 GL-5 in the garage..

Bring it along. If the Ford guy doesn't have what you want you can shove this stuff down his throat.

Not much car but I would buy one tomorrow for $600. You can't even buy a good bicycle for that, let alone a motorcycle !! I don't see how they can do it.

this made me laugh - 2 years ago I bought a '08 C350 as there was a lot of trunk money from MB, the '09s were all ready out.

Anyway is was summer time here and I was dressed pretty casual as well, shorts, tee shirt, sneakers etc...

I had called and made an appointment and had a great experience, but I do wonder how they would have responded if I would have just showed up? :shades:

We are talking the Chinese here. Average factory worker makes less than $2000 a year. Then, lower overhead costs. Still pretty remarkable, and not bad looking, as long as a big transport truck coming up the rear doesn't miss you.

Well, Oxmoor actually DID have the correct oil- and at a fair price to boot!
I hadn't mentioned this before, but an added twist is that the oil is made in Germany...

The Motorcraft fluid is a 75W-90 GL-4 oil- which is what Mazda recommends for that transaxle. It makes a noticeable difference in shift quality and totally eliminates cold shifting issues(read: 2nd. gear grinding on the first upshift of the day). It's highly recommended on the Mazdaspeed boards.

i agree with you as far as how the numbers worked out.
if you put the 2k in the bank for 3 years, how much are you going to make?
with zero down, if the car is totaled, you have what is left of the 2k minus however many months you paid on the lease divided by 36.
one bad thing, is CT can whack you on property tax.
Back in '01, my leased a Saab SE wagon. The first year tax bill was over $700.
We have had a couple of Fords that were with in 10% of the MSRP, but I have never paid anything close to $500 year one. Our town has a low mil rate.

Yes, but the appropriate units for this vehicle would be something like "miles per Big Mac!" ;)

Also, does it have a BlueTooth and cup holders? :P

Well lets see, According to my heart rate monitor I burn a bit more than 100 calories in a mile (on average), a Big Mac is 485 calories so about 4.5 miles per Big Mac.

Also, does it have a BlueTooth and cup holders?

Well as for Blue Tooth you can always get an ear piece for that. As for the cup holders it doesn't have those. But it has two locations where you can mount a bottle cage to hold a water bottle.

Wow. That name "Raleigh" sounded very familiar. I just went out in my garage to check for sure. I still have my Raleigh 3 speed I had as a kid. It's needs a little work with the wheels and chain. Still have those big wrap around fenders laying right beside it. Seat and paint still in good condition. I've been thinking about having it refurbished in the past. Maybe now is the time. :shades:

Do you pay sales tax and registration too? If so, that is really bad. Jersey isn't too bad on vehicle fees, on leases we only pay tax on the total cost of the lease. When buying you pay tax on the total vehicle price (minus value of trade in). What sucks is, they now make you pay 4 year registration when you buy/lease a new car. So for a 3 year leaser like my self they get you for an extra year since, you only keep the car three years. Pretty crafty! After 4 years or a used vehicle its usually under $100 a year for reg. My GFs Elantra was under $50 and they get me for around $80 for my S10.

CT has a 6% sales and use tax, so they tax your lease. A $400 base lease payment will cost you $424. At least they haven't caught on to the 4 year reg yet.
Each year we pay property tax based on the 'value' of the vehicle times .7 (70 percent) times the mil rate of the town you live in.

    Staff Reporter
    Toronto Star

That’s the lesson a 19-year-old Vaughan man is learning after he boasted online about driving 100 km/h over the speed limit and was charged with careless driving.

York Regional police said Vladimir Rigenco pleaded guilty to the charge and has been banned from driving for six months. He was also sentenced to 12 months probation, must take part in a remedial driving program and pay a $1,000 fine.

At his home in Vaughan on Tuesday evening, Rigenco said the police couldn’t prove he was driving 140 km/h (85mph)in a 40 km/h zone.(25 mph)

“They can’t prove anything — it’s just a forum,” he said.

When asked how he felt about all the attention, he replied: “How do you think I feel? Famous for something stupid.”

Police said Rigenco admitted to posting under the username “bmw550ifreak” on the BMW fan site 5 Series Forums.

On March 16 that user started a discussion thread called: “Going 140 km/h on a 40 zone.” That zone was a subdivision in Vaughan.

“The title says it all basically,” Rigenco wrote.

He described in detail how he stopped his 2006 BMW M5S on Apple Blossom Dr. and then floored it.

“I hit 140 in like 6 or less seconds lol,” he wrote.

Rigenco also posted about challenging another vehicle to a race on Dufferin St. “I cant stop racing with this car,” he wrote.

Rigenco was slammed by outraged forum members who were not impressed with his boastful post.

“It's really not something to be bragging about, I have a son and I worry about drivers like you,” one user wrote.

“There is a clear and present danger on the streets of Toronto,” another forum member wrote.

“Buddy. . . i think you are terribly misguided here. The fact that you knowingly pulled into a subdivision and did this, is just downright stupid.”

Following the negative reaction, Rigenco apologized and expressed regret in numerous posts throughout the 24-page thread.

“I drive everyday on my M5 and think about this thread it frustrates me, because I know I should have not done what I did,” Rigenco wrote. “I am driving as careful as I can now.”

At least one forum comment came from a person who claimed to be walking down Apple Blossom Dr. with their son when Rigenco sped down the street.

“If I ever see you speeding down the neighbourhood again, the cops are going to be the least of your worries!!!”

Police said a 5 Series Forums member from the U.S. tipped them off about Rigenco. One of the last posts in the thread is a note from an officer.

“Any witnesses that wish to come forward on Apple Blossom Drive, Vaughan about the dangerous operation of 2006 BMW M5S please contact Sergeant Morash, of York Regional Police.”

Rigenco’s reaction — a simple, alarmed “um” — follows in another post.

“Just looking at forums is obviously not enough, so an investigation was launched,” said Const. Serguei Barmakov.

He said police canvassed the neighbourhood and found a person who had witnessed the speeding incident and was willing to give a statement. Soon after, they found Rigenco.

“He knew it was coming and he was remorseful for his actions,” Barmakov said.

Barmakov said the Apple Blossom Dr. incident wasn’t an isolated occurrence — many of Rigenco’s neighbours were concerned about his driving.

Rigenco also admitted to smoking marijuana and started a thread about a car accident he said he was involved in with his BMW a few weeks after the speeding incident. Barmakov said police didn’t have enough evidence to pursue charges for either of these things.

Rigenco was originally charged with stunt driving and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle — charges which, if he was convicted, could have left him with a criminal record.

Fortunately for Rigenco, said his lawyer Aaron Spektor, those charges were dropped. Spektor called the case “bizarre” and said his client learned a lot from the embarrassment.

“He feels really stupid,” Spektor said.

Spektor describes Rigenco as a brilliant student who was offered scholarships from Ryerson, York and the University of Toronto. He wants to be a pilot. Spektor said Rigenco’s parents, who don’t know much about cars, bought the M5 for him as a reward for doing well in school. He said the parents just didn’t know any better.

“What business does he have behind the wheel of an M5? A 500-horsepower car?”

“Suffice it to say, it’s gone. He doesn’t have it anymore. They took it.”

Parents are just as stupid as the kid, if you believe that they don't know much about giving their son what amounts to a $50K-$60K car because "he did well in school".

As soon as I get PO'd at my own son for something trivial, I read something like this and become quite thankful.

    What has happened here?

I guess I caused enough trouble over in a CRV "problem" forum that I better get back here for safety reasons.

    Sales story?

First of all, I really planned to stick it out a couple more years.

I worked in a great store that had a wonderful owner, great managers and some wonderful co-workers that I really miss. As with any job, there were the "good" things and the "bad" things.

The customers changed as the yers went by. They became nastier, less friendly and totally price focused to the point I could lose a sale over so litttle money it was laughable. Also, the demographics changed and I was forced to deal with people that were beyond difficult. I'll leave it at that.

As time went by, the job became less and less to my liking and I found myself avoiding people I had no interest in dealing with. It was time to move on and I knew it. Still, I miss my co-workers more than I can describe.

One day, I had a middle aged, very professional couple who were both employed by a VERY well known local software company. They were in on three seperate days, took up hours of my time, drove several cars etc. They were pleasant to deal with.

One day he called me and made an appointment to come in and work a deal.

They carried in the usual file folder that was jammed with printouts etc. I knew it was going to be a tough and "mini" deal. I didn't mind. They had been nice to deal with.

Finally, after at least an hour of haggling, we struck a deal and HE SHOOK MY HAND!

As I prepared to get the paperwork ready, he picked up his cell phone and called another Honda store. Bear in mind, he was sitting at my desk!

He said to them " OK, here is what I have, can you beat it?"

Then he hung up and told me..." You will have to do better...they will save me 200.00".

I got up and told my SM what had happened and he told me to match the deal which wouild have been a loser.

I came back and asjked my customer..." If I match that, will you stay here now and buy the car?" He said yes.

I told him " Fine, we have a deal" and as I reach to shake his hand, he made another call on hid cellphone to the other store.

That is when I did something I had never done before and something I never did again. I threw him out!

So much for the value of a handshake huh?
  • houdini1houdini1 Member Posts: 8,356
Good for you. You have more patience than I do, I would have thrown him out after the first phone call.

Those Honda people don't like to have their delusions on Honda quality messed with . They think every Honda engine, trans, and even the wiper blades should last at least 20 years or 200,000 miles, whichever come first.

That is when I did something I had never done before and something I never did again. I threw him out!

What was his reaction to being thrown out?

I think I would have thrown him out the first time he took out his cell phone. No telling how many cell phone calls he would have ended up making to save that extra fifty cents.

The guy had b*lls to be sure. But terribly ignorant ones.

I suppose there is a slight chance he was calling the other store to say that he decided to buy elsewhere and not leave the other salesman hanging..
Could he have been going to be that considerate??
    Nah...not very likely..
Musta felt good to send him on his way. And we can hope that the 'other dealer' was actually just a dial tone, lol.

All kidding aside, I feel badly for you though.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
    Jip,

I don't doubt that some CRV owners have had their A/C pumps fail but I doubt if it's any more prevelant than on Accords or Civics.

I honestly do believe that Honda owners are less accepting when something does break than on other models where they expect it.

Then they flock to the forums where they can always find company.

Making or losing a sale wasn't something that affected my lifestyle one iota.

I've been in retail all of my life most of the time in mid to high level management. I can put up with a lot and I usually an very adapt at handling difficult customers.

He was definatly calling another store and I hope he's happy after going back on his word and a handshake.

I was lucky to have parents that taught me the value of a handshake.

But, hey, he probably "saved" 50.00.

Now, I'm all for being a frugal shopper b ut there comes a point.

"Parents are just as stupid as the kid, if you believe that they don't know much about giving their son what amounts to a $50K-$60K car because "he did well in school".

Yesterday, I biked past my old house near campus on my way to pick up a parking permit for my bike. My wife had told me that some changes had been made to the house--which is to be expected given the frequent student renter turnover in the neighborhood. It had a very small front yard and the boys who had lived in the house for the last couple of years had a semicircular drive installed to accommodate even more cars. The young woman (or women) who reside there at this point had the dilapidated detached garage torn down and removed (more parking?)

In the semicircular drive was a brand new BMW X3 with the one-month paper license tag still affixed. Recession, what recession?

Oh, driver, I'm sure the 20 year old female "owner" asked her folks to buy her the BMW for its driving dynamics :shades:

anyone wants to know I last put gas in my Mazda3 on June 2, 2010 and I still have a 1/4 tank. I won't be putting any more in until at least the end of next week since the car has been in the body shop for the last week and now will be there at least until Tuesday of next week because it required a few additional parts that weren't obvious to the adjuster. It helped that I was out of town for five of those weeks. I think when I last filled up gas was $2.45/gallon--it must have gone up by now.

Isell, I think I would give up on all humanity at that point.

You miss your friends though, and that isn't easy to give up, especially suddenly.
When you miss your friends at the dealership, just think about that lovely couple.
Now that you don't work there any more you should call them and tell them what you really think.

One neighbor worked at the Mercedes dealer and they had a big changeover, and they let him go. He was a nice guy and a good salesperson, but the new owners wanted a big changeover. He really didn't want to go back to selling cars.

Not much work though when you are in your late 40s so he is selling volkswagons. He said it is pretty good, but I get the feeling he is tired of the car game.

Enjoy your retirement...once you get a few things going you will wonder why you didn't do it earlier. Now you have time for doctors appointments, taking your wife shopping, taking the dog for a walk, go to a car showroom and make some newbies day.

You know, it's funny. I've been in retail all of my life. I was a Division Manager for a large Sears store when I was 24. I dealt with some demanding and unreasnoble customers but NOTHING like some of the people in the car business.

I have to say, it tainted me in a way and it left me with ill feelings toward certain groups of people. I don't like these feelings but they are there.

On the plus side, I had some wonderful customers too. People who were very loyal and decent. People I will never forget. Were it not for these people and my co-workers I would have left the business immediatly.

Sadly, most stores aren't like the one I worked at. A lot fit the sterotypes.

Anytime I miss the business all I have to do is visit the "Prices Paid Forums" and I am instantly transported back to the part of the business I despised. :)

Hindsight is 20-20 as they say, but wouldn't it have been wonderful to give him a ridiculously low number and sit there while he calls. Then when he gets finished and says "I'll take it". Just say you wanted numbers, I gave you numbers. However there is no way I'm going to sell for that, I just wanted to see what the other dealer would do...then kick the bum out.

gogi.....I just had the longest lasting tank on my car. Still had 100 miles to go until empty (according to the car computer). Last filled up on August 1. Filled up this a.m. with 300 miles exactly on this tankful. All in town driving (which my foot planted well into the right pedal most of the time. Figured out 21 MPG on this tank (via a great iPhone app called "Gas Cubby". As my TL breaks in more (almost 4K miles) MPG is going up. That's a good thing.

As far as kids and cars, we all want our kids to have an easier time than we had. I understand the sentiment. My parents wanted me to have it easier than they had it.

However, there's a sense that a kid needs an expensive car to a) show the outside world the family's status by buying the kid(s) an expensive car, or b) compensate for slacking on other (more important) parental duties. That's kind of the way I see it. I thought I went way overboard in letting my son take over the daily driving duties of a 2.5 year old Accord. I thought I was being over the top with that.

This was several years ago, but I distinctly remember getting into an internet discussion with a teen posting here at Edmunds. I think the thread was "Best Car for a Teen/First time driver". Kid was posting that his parents were going to buy him something along the lines of a new BMW, Acura, Audi, something of that ilk. And, he was trying to decide which he wanted.

While I can't control what other families do, I asked this teen what he learned by having his parents "give" him a BMW, Acura, Audi? He became quite "huffy", stating that his parents "OWED" him that kind of car. When I asked "why?", he got even more belligerent, how he was a "B" student. I further quizzed him on whether he had a job to cover the car's expenses like insurance, gas, maintenance, etc. He said he didn't have to because that was his parent's job.

I became quite incensed over this and probably should have just let the thread carry on without me. I think one of the hosts actually warned me and deleted my posts as a result, as they should have.

However, this sense of entitlement, that someone "owes" the teens, scares me. We all know that that attitude is going to be a disaster in the real world.

but wouldn't it have been wonderful to give him a ridiculously low number and sit there while he calls.

That is perfect...what a great idea!

This was a good one from our newspaper in Dennis O'Sullivan's Wheels column.

    Q. About six months ago I purchased a used car from a friend who purchased the car when new. Since that time I have been having all sorts of electrical problems. The car is a 2008 Chrysler Sebring, which has less than 12000 miles on the odometer when I bought it. I have been back to the dealer 4 or 5 times and they say the electrical problems can't be fixed under warranty. Could you tell me of a garage that could help me?

    A. I do not have good news for you. I checked your cars serial number and found that an insurance company, about a year ago had totalled the car. There was slightly more than $14000 damage to the car at the time. I can't find where the car was repaired, but obviously it wasn't repaired very well.

It gets worse! Your friend was not the original purchaser of the car and it was a daily rental car. If your friend is around I would see if he paid taxes for the car, and you might want to see a lawyer.
You might go to a garage to see what area the damage was done in the accident, that might be a starting point for fixing the electrical problems.

    2 Things;
    1) Buyer beware,
    2) Do I get a gold star?

    Some stores will do this.

A mooch will pit store against store in their zeal to pay the least possible amount of money. Honestly, it's like an obsession for some people.

They will get on the phone and call every store within 200 miles.

I would spend half of a busy Saturday with some people answereing questions, going on long and "creative" test drives and trying to build a rapport with them which I was usually very good about doing.

Then they would leave to do their "research" and make endless phone calls.

They would flock to some of the "Prices Paid" forums and sometimes get impossible numbers that they actually wanted me to beat.

Then I would get a call..." I can buy a new Civic LX for XXXX dollars at ABC Honda."

If I knew they had bad information or had been "lowballed" I would gently try to let them know that. You see, I had to be careful. If I chose the wrong words, they would never return to me to give me the satisfaction of being right.

Some stores would delight in lowballing people over the phone and, although I never did this, I have to say some customers deserved it.

I would ask.." Are you sure they quoted you for an automatic and not a stick"?

I had customers drive great distances onlyu to find out that some kind of a "mistake or misunderstanding" had occured.

If they came back to me, I was never smug and I never had an " I told you so" attitude.

Often, exausted from the ordeal, the weary customer would often just fold and reward the store that lied to them by caving in and buying the car from them.

The stores that lowball customers know this and that is why it happens. Our store would have never done that.

I used to visit the "Prices Paid" forums and sometimes I would try in a nice way to suggest that certain prices never happened. This only incurred the wrath of one of the hosts so I gave up.

his is where I like things - the other day my 18 year old, who has been driving my 99 Celica with the convertible top that can't come down and is patched with duct tape, asked that if I sell it she be given first opportunity to buy it. I don't know how I did it but that's a good kid.
