Could they really cut you off from getting the service work done there? In that case, I guess you had better not cut off your nose to spite your face. Still, it would bring great satisfaction to tell the SM that you purchased from Dealer B. Still yet, he may eventually find out when you bring it in for service. That might just be the best way.

How far north must I go to find the chipped beef? A butcher sold me what he said was chipped beef.

You were taken. We're talking about chipped HAM and Isalys is the one we're talking about.

I made a cream gravy, mixed in the chipped beef, and put it over toasted rye bread. Not bad,

When I was in the Navy (all military for that matter) that's what they do only I never had it over rye bread. I'm pretty sure the military only does it over white toast or biscuits. You always hear jokes about this stuff (creamed chipped beef over toast) but it wan't bad the way Navy chow halls did it. But it ain't no substitute for Isalys Chipped Ham that is put in barbque sauce or just a plain ole sandwich.

I'll let the others Pittsburghers tell you how perfect the sandwich is with a chocolate milkshake. Talk about an all fat diet. I don't think my body could take one of those lunches today but what a way to go. :)

I mean seriously, they lost a customer over $5 bucks! And not only that, if any of my friends or relatives, or spouse mostly, wants to go to Rite Aid, I specifically forbid it, and make them go elsewhere, so they lose other people's business too.

Seriously, you've been holding this grudge for how many years? Let --- it --- go.

You made a mistake (no receipt) and hopefully learned from it. Move forward and think positive, rather than looking back negatively on things like this.

Five dollars for all this venom?

Oh man! That sandwich with a chocolate shake sounds fabulous. Though my body is nothing to brag about now, I would be willing to give it a try. :D Chipped HAM? I had it all wrong. All of those years that I traveled to the Burg on business---wish I had known about it then.

Ah yes, SOS (S*** On a Shingle), it really wasn't bad stuff. At least that I can remember, haven't had it since Uncle Sam gave me my DD214.

    5. You have to admit that we each win 50% of the argument.

I'll stick my nose in here and opine that from a moral and ethical point of view, you are both in the same boat.

I believe Driver when he says he bought the watch as a gag item, not as a substitute for a real Rolex.

I don't believe Richard when he said he didn't care if the goods were stolen.
If that were true he wouldn't care if they had been stolen from a neighbor, or a relation, or from one of his former collegues or pupils, or from one of us, and Richard doesn't come across as that kind of a guy.

If either of you had bought those items as a substitute for the real thing, and if the fakes had not been available you would have purchased the real McCoy, then shame on you both; but I don't believe that to be the case.

If it were, then real economic losses would have been sustained by the manufacturer and the whole supply chain down to the retailer.

The only possible complaint that could be made is that these items were produced by poorly paid or under age workers, and if true it would be hard to argue against.

That dilemma though is the same one when you purchase any product for which you don't know the provenance, whether you buy it from Wal-Mart or Macys.

So IMO, there's little guilt to share, but if there is any you share it equally. :shades:

    Richard,

See if Piggly Wiggly has chopped ham, pressed ham, or boiled ham cold cuts. It's in a square loaf - not round.

Have them slice it paper thin. They usually hate to do that since it takes so long to get a half pound.

If they won't do it, never go there again!!!! ;)

Seriously - if you can find it and they will slice it that way it makes for a great sandwich. I use mayonnaise on mine which is considered heresy to some, but someone suggested it and that's the only way I eat it now. Except for barbecued of course.

Martin, You are right. I really would care. I was just being a smart [non-permissible content removed], plus feeling a little guilty about it. Your assessment of us both is right on the money. Thanks for posting that opinion.

Yes, pierogies are Polish - and way tasty!

The Piggly Wiggly? They're still around? How about a Wynn Dixie? Been a long time since I've seen either. When I was in Tallahassee in grad school a Wynn Dixie was the nearest grocery store but there was plenty reason to go the extra mile to the Publix or Albertson's. Still, none of them had real food like stores in the northeast.....

Wait until andre tries to return his Audi and they won't give him full price back.... :P

Joe, Thanks so much for that tip. We do have a Piggly Wiggly store here. I'll sure try it. I also like mayonnaise on my sandwiches, and at times I put mustard with it. Though we don't use that store very often, I'll see if I can get the butcher to slice it paper thin. I remember Jmonroe saying that it was important to have it that way. Thanks again.

Well...I said Piggly Wiggly because I know it's a southern grocery store. I don't really know if you have to go there. ;)

If you can't find it, maybe jmonroe will ship you some. I'm also in Pennsylvania, but not near an Islay's (about 90 miles east of jmonroe). We still can get pretty good chipped ham here.

We have a friend who has a 2010 Subaru. He loves that car. I've ridden in it, and it's very comfortable. He really enjoys the way that it handles.

I agree with you about Andres. I believe that he is a young guy trying to find his way. The younger generation has a different perspective from mine. I'm glad that it doesn't have to be Piggly Wiggly. We have a store here called Fresh Market. They have an excellent meat section. I've noticed that many retired folks from up north like to shop there. I'll try them. Thanks again.

    1. Venture...mayo on chipped ham ? EEEEEk! I hope that erases from my memory.

    2. Holding a grudge...I did a lot of remodeling way back, got a Black and Decker folding work table with a $10 rebate. Did all the steps, receipt, front cover of manual,etc...no rebate. Money was tight back then. To this day I have bought many a power tool...None of them Black & Decker.

Sears didn't buy KMart. KMart bought Sears. Boggles the mind, but that's the 'offical' story. The KMart CEO is/was supposed to be a 'real estate' genuis (he turned some other failing company around?), and The Street thought he was going to have some money making ideas about what to do with closed Kmarts and Sears buildings. And, nothing much that I can see has come of this buyout. Kmart has few shoppers and Sears has up and down years.

Returning stuff: Without a receipt, how does a manager not know you didn't shoplift that item a while back, and are attempting to realize a 100% profit on its return? As far as I know, no state laws require a business to accept returns. Just like cars, you move it out the door, it's yours.

Good ol' Sears returns. A few years ago, we bought a dent and scratched high dollar washer. There were a bunch of window AC units stacked in the aisle with it. Talking to our long time saleslady, she told us how Sears will sell one in the summer, then refund the complete price when autumn arrives. And a lot of people know this and do it. I was shocked that Sears would do this. Bought a treadmill that 'the elderly man just couldn't figure out how to use it'. I dickered on it, and a manager gave an even large discount because the computer would not calculate another 10% off, and no one seemed to be able to calculate how much this would be, so she just reduced it by another $100. Recommended my in-laws buy a JVC TV, one of the last cathode tube ones, that had a large hole in the side, looked like someone threw a spear into it. This TV has a picture quality that is as good as my flat screen TVs and has worked perfectly for several years. Most of the time, I really like my Sears store...

BMW vs Mustang: If you are going to just set them side by side, that double oval grill will win. If you are going to drive them like you stole them, then the test shows there is no real difference. Except $25,000. Very few people are going to drive cars as shown in the video. This is far, far past 'feel of the road'.

There are some more items, but who remembers across 120 messages....

I liked the Fusion more than I thought I would.

I really like Fusions. The one we rented in Florida was black with the gold flex in it....black leather seats (I am not usually a fan of black on black) with the white stitching. The car was laid out nicely, good steering, very comfortable seats, instruments were nicely done and the little 4 cylinder had enough power for most driving...actually surprisingly good. The whole car feels right.

Not so much with the Regal I sat in so I think the problems with it would be similar to the Lacrosse. It isn't designed properly, instrument panel comes up and is high so you can't see the hood at all. My wife said she could never drive the car, the hood is too low to see and the instrument panel comes up too high to see over.

She banged her knee on the dash getting out the passenger side, I did the same on the drivers side, the dash sweeps outward right to where your knee is.

In my opinion, I don't think real engineers designed these cars. But the Fusion performed well, and is a nice neat design, and I think they look a lot nicer than Buicks...but that's just me.

I love it. Every time that I use my psychology on you, it works. You're such a softy.

I am a lover, not a fighter. Life is too short and arguing only hurts yourself.

I still think buying one lousy watch just for fun so people would have a good laugh is different than trying to impress people with knock off handbags, sweaters, Polo shirts, closets full of phony clothes, zirkonia diamond rings, knock off dinnerware, etc. It was one stupid watch....didn't impress any one.

Fezo agrees with you, so I am outnumbered, of course Fezo wants to inherit your stockpile of knock off goods, so I don't know if his opinion counts. Ah, who cares, I am as guilty as you...there I said it, frame it, I lost my first arguement ever.

"...MOST companies do however, accept returns without a receipt..."

True, but they have to be careful. You would not believe the tricks that professional scammers will try to defraud companies. Even otherwise good people will pull some pretty nasty stuff.

A local supermarket caught a woman who would go to the seafood department pick up a bag of something expensive like shrimp and then walk over to the customer service counter and demand money back on some thing she had not even purchased. The supermarket, trying not to offend, gave her a full cash refund with no receipt.

After many successful scams, an alert employee caught on and called police. When the cops searched her car they found $500,000 cash and a fur coat. She was big news here locally and became known as "The Shrimp Lady". I can easily see someone buying a watch on sale and then trying to return it for full price.

Just curious, why didn't you wait until the sale was over and then return it?

Could they really cut you off from getting the service work done there?

I am not sure. They might put a black mark next to my name and not give me priority service like they do now. My friend who bought his car at Dealer B said he picked up his car and the same day took the key and paperwork to Dealer A to register it.

I think I will just quietly start bringing it in. I'll register because the file system works from your phone number. So, when I need service they will see it is a different car. If I see the salesman or SM I will just have to tell them.

I would love to see that SM though, I basically got a 2012 for the same amount he was selling a 2011 demonstrator.

I think it is the principle this dealer works under. People buying there at A don't want to drive 30 minutes to an out of town dealer. The can sell one car and make the profit the other dealer makes on 2 cars. Dealer B is in a diversified ethnic area where people find it natural to bargain. Two very different methods of selling.

Mac, thank you for your comments, I am glad you made them. I think what you said is exactly right. Totell you the truth, when I bought the watch I did think about the manufacturers and retailers who sell Rolex watches and had a bit of guilt (only slight because as you said, I wasn't trying to impress any one), but I didn't think about the people who made these items.

"...What in the world are pierogies..."

Pierogies are boat anchors disguised as food that Ukrainian mothers serve their daughter's Irish boyfriends in an attempt to test their intestinal fortitude. If said boyfriend survives, the mother then allows him to marry the daughter. Only after the wedding does the mother reveal that you have to wash them down with wiskey to avoid digestive shutdown.

    Thanks for the impartial comments.

I'll probably drive a LaCrosse in the next few days to get the feel of the Buick. It is a little larger than I really like, but the options are easier to configure than Ford.

With Ford it is almost all "packages". You have to buy $1,400 worth of options to get one little feature you want. Ford doesn't even offer Xenon headlights and they still have that irritating number pad on the doors for entry. I'm not sure if the keyless entry option includes the number pad though. We will see.

I'm sure this method is much easier for Ford to build cars and, probably, in the long haul, makes it cheaper to build. One thing that will never be known is how many prople decide not to buy one because of the "package" thingy.

One thing about Andre is he is entertaining. He has some very good views on things too. It is unfortunate that he feels so wronged.

I'll tell you what bothered me the other day. We have a new Walmart across town and although we try not to shop there (talk about slave labor etc) we couldn't find Sudafeds 4 hour relief tablets in about 10 different drug stores (we use them as a decongestent when flying so our ears don't get blocked).

So we bought some light bulbs and 2 photo cards reg $24 for $11. Paid, carried them to the door, and the greeter guy says he wants to look at what we bought and our receipt. I opened the bag and showed him what we bought along with the receipt.

After, I said to my wife, I should have told him I wasn't going to show him. It is my understanding they can't accuse you of stealing until you have left the store and they had better find the stolen goods on you or you can sue. Maybe I should have said, I paid for the goods, if you want to look in the bag or see the receipt then make an arrest.

The only thing is we are going on holiday in 2 weeks and I don't want to be in prison while my wife goes to Europe

"...The young girls didn't seem to influence me..."

You must be getting old. :P

I'm thinking that using young females is a pretty clever marketing idea. Many retail and eating establishments seem to skew this way. Car sales would seem to be an area full of potential as it is rife with feelings of status and virility (at least for men). Having a young woman tell you that you look just like Brad Pitt when you drive that Fiat 500 might make a lot of deals.

Makes you wonder who they'd send when a woman goes for a test drive. Do they send Fabio? :confuse:

bolivar....the whole financial arrangement between Sears and K-Mart does indeed boggle the mind. I thought that maybe they'd be complimentary markets.....K-Mart in the low end.....Sears in the middle. Then, they closed the K-Marts down. So, what was gained?

Never been either a Sears, nor a K-Mart shopper. Nothing really stood out about them to make me shop at either. And, on the rare occasion I did, it was mostly Sears. Even there, is seemed like they nickeled and dimed you. I know I tried to buy appliances from them under a "free delivery" program. Well, what they don't tell you is you pay for delivery up front, and then send in for a rebate for the delivery. I'm sure some would forget to mail in the rebate form, allowing Sears to keep that money. But, c'mon!

I would buy a DieHard battery on occasion. Even there, if you've got as dead battery, you have to get it to Sears. GF just had a battery die in her Avalanche last week (she got 6 years out of it). There was a store (Advanced Auto Parts) that came to her, replaced the battery, delivery was free. Cost of the battery was less than what Sears tried to charge, too.

Both places just seem to be way out of touch with today's retail business. environment.

Saw the posts about the BMW vs the Mustang. Regardless of the outcome, I very seriously doubt anyone who would consider the BMW would buy the Mustang, and vice versa. And, it has nothing to do with what either can do on a track.

"...using young females is a pretty clever marketing idea."

I don't know. Perhaps it comes from my years of teaching and working with young teachers, but it would make me a bit nervous. If by chance the young woman accused you of some impropriety, you could be in hot water. After all, the two of you were in a car alone away from the dealership. We had to be so careful about that in education. If I found myself alone with a young female teacher, I made sure that the office door was open and that one of us was in clear view. It may sound crazy, but people do strange things these days.

We just returned from a 1100 km. camping trip (about 700 miles) with a very new experience.
Our tow vehicle is a 2011 Subaru Outback 3.6, pulling a pop-up Aliner hard sided trailer (no canvas which is very relevant to this story).
We were camping at Killbear Provincial Park near Parry Sound, Ontario. Friday morning around 4am, we were awakened by loud crashing and banging noises right outside our camper.
A VERY large black bear was doing his best to destroy a large heavy plastic container full of food. Another guy (as stupid as I was) went outside (in our underwear and bare feet) both armed with flashlights. We watched with amazement as the bear hauled his prize into the woods behind us and after about 10 minutes , succeeded in ripping open the box and scarfed down about a week's worth of someone's food.
The interesting point of this to me is that the heavy box of food came from the campsite right beside us ....less than 30 feet away. The box was in the back of a two door Chevy Blazer....the owner forgot that the passenger window was left open...duh! The bear climbed in the window and somehow manhandled (bear handled?) this large heavy container past the two high backed bucket seats. over the center console and out the window.....all with doing minimal damage to the car.
When you are over 70, this is pretty cool to experience and a great story for our 6 grandchildren.

    Stay safe everybody.

Both places just seem to be way out of touch with today's retail business. environment.

I agree, very strange business models.
Sears is well stocked but with very minimal staffing, half of whom are straight out of school and the other half appear to be a week or two away from checking in to a funeral home.
Seriously, some of these people are way past retirement age. :surprise:

The huge K-Mart in the same mall has a different strategy.
Very little stock on the shelves, and only three employees; one manning the checkout in Garden Center entrance, another on a single register in the line of fifteen near the main entrance, and one more on the 'service' (ha!) desk.

I can only think that they survive as a front for money laundering. ;)

:...If by chance the young woman accused you of some impropiety..."

You mean like: "if you don't buy this car old man, I'm going to rat you out for grabbing my knee"?

Now THAT would be a "closer". Dealer A should have tried that on driver 100.

I know what you're talking about in the educational system. I use to hate cameras on school buses but not so much any more.

I'm not sure if a young honey would influence my car buying. These days any woman under 30 looks like a little girl to me. They all look my 14 yo niece.

" still have that irritating number pad on the doors for entry."

I've wondered about that keypad that Ford seems to have stuck with for so long. What's the point? Obviously a button on the key fob is a lot faster and easier than punching in a code on the keypad, especially with gloves on.

See if Piggly Wiggly has chopped ham, pressed ham, or boiled ham cold cuts. It's in a square loaf - not round.

It’s much more than the shape. Even here in the Burgh there are stores that sell the “off” brands but it isn’t the same as Isaly’s…big, BIG difference in taste. It’s very interesting to see people walk up to the deli counter and emphatically say ISALY’S chipped ham to distinguish it from the knock offs. It is more costly but well worth the price. I got a kick out of a deli worker years ago who had just waited on a woman ahead of me who got the knock off. When the woman was out of hearing distance she said to me, “I don’t know how anybody could eat that stuff”. I agree. I never ever buy the knock off even when it is buried in barbeque sauce.

Have them slice it paper thin. They usually hate to do that since it takes so long to get a half pound.

When I moved to SC there were a lot of Pittsburgher’s who had moved there before I did. They said they found a chipped ham brand that was almost as good as Isaly’s but not quite as good but still very good at the Kroger’s store in town. Since these were Pittsburgher’s telling me this I figured they knew what they were talking about and they were right.

You are right about the time it takes to shave this off a loaf but here in the Burgh they place two loaves (side by side) in an automatic slicer and let it rip. That’s the only way I ever saw it done here in the Burgh. However, that Kroger’s store in SC didn’t have one of those thingies. In a way it was funny to watch the expression on the deli people’s faces when a Pittsburgher walked up to the counter and said, “gimme two pounds of x-brand of chipped ham”. :( I’m told that Pittsburgher's have an accent and before we got the words out of our mouths the deli people were in full fright mode. I sympathized with them but not enough to not order it. One time I told the girl how they did it in the Burgh and she said, “I wish they’d get one of those machines for us”.

The keypad is a great feature! You can throw your keys under the mat and then get into the car with the keypad. You can also NEVER get locked out (provided you know the code). There is a hard-coded number programmed with the car and then you can program a second code so you can change it at will.

I loved having that feature on my Ford and Lincoln, and if my next car is a Ford/Lincoln I will certainly make sure it is keypad equipped.

There are bumper stickers here in the South that

proclaim "We don't care how you did it up north".

Another one that made me think was>

"Those of you that think you know it all...

really annoy those of us that do".

Now.. about Pittsburgh? They put french fries on their sandwiches... not sure I want to hold them up as a paragon of gastronomy

Hey, Primanti rothers rule!!! When we drove crosscountry from CT to CA, we stopped by Pittsburgh so I could show my wife two things, CMU and Primanti brothers. Oh, and Pamela's. I guess that's 3 things. :)
