Is that like those medical marijuana growers/users/stores that Judge Judy gets in her California cases once in a while? There was a guy and girl friend on last night with their medical marijuana licenses giving the right to 'grow.'

I won't contest the dried up farm land given our extraordinary drought, but you have only to look at the indian casinos that have cropped up everywhere in the State, especially on the borders to see that any poverty is tribe-specific. Several of the tribes now run daily Hollywood-made commercials promoting tribal history, autonomy and accomplishments. East of downtown Tulsa and near Joplin, MO now looks like Vegas. Many tribes now offer full scholarships to my institution. Not too many idle oil fields either with the relative uptick in oil; our huge natural gas reserves are making companies like Chesapeake Energy and Koch Industries flush with cash and able to hire.
I'm not looking to argue I'm just pointing out that there are some hopeful signs among the constant drumbeat of doom and gloom.

If you could make the goods that are better or the same in price and quantity you would buy them. If you can't someone in another country will. Would you pay double for a TV made in the USA? Of course not, if you don't trade you will be paying artificially high prices for your goods.
BTW, if you don’t want our OJ you can always try squeezing hockey pucks.
OJ is overated. High in calories and sugar. At least hockey pucks are high in fibre.

They are either inferior or more expensive or you would be buying them. Would you pay 50% or double the price to buy American? That is why even US manufacturers produce goods overseas.
Yes,and he was another American from whom you benefitted. For someone who appears to be blaming us for all of our mistakes, you've done pretty well by us. Your backside would be frozen if we hadn't allowed you to buy a second home in Florida.
Steve Jobs actually hurt me, we hold some RIM stock. I am not sure how he helped us, we had Blackberries from RIM and they worked fine, until Apple came along. Steve Jobs didn't wine about Blackberries, he went out and made something better - in the true American spirit. He wasn't a winer, who blamed other countries for his problems.

If the above would make it seem to appear that I think folks are getting way too serious and starting to talk at rather than to each other that might be accurate.
It's a funny thing. I have a friend who is as conservative as they come and I am certainly left of center but we have wonderful conversations and find frequently we differ more on tactics than on goals.
Richard is correct that we agree on lots more than our labels would indicate. We certainly agree about a government living within means like the rest of us.
I remember taking one of those tests where they did a four dimensional political test where I came out a liberal libertarian. My guess is that Richard (and e]several others) would test out as conservative libertarians.
I didn't say that at all. I said we and almost all Canadians wear a Canadian pin because most people treat you a lot better-insome countries you probably wouldn't want to admit you are an American. We aren't self-centred nationalists as some people seem to be, only wanting free trade if it is to their advantage. It is to every one's advantage to have free trade agreements...you need certain goods and you want to sell certain goods. Much better than artificial duties to keep inefficient manufacturers in business.
I still don't see how NAFTA could affect your friends textile business. We don't ship or even manufacture textiles, and haven't for decades. They might have been affected by imports from Asia or something, but NAFTA refers to North America Free Trade Agreement. Sometimes when a business fails people like to put the blame somewhere else, not on themselves for not changing with the times. Many companies, such as Adidas, Reebock, etc. all manufacture in 3rd world countries. I don't think the goods are necessarily inferior, sometimes they are better.

2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
Right on! Some people are taking my comments far too seriously. This is just an exchange of ideas. If people really believe NAFTA ruined the economy (and not toxic mortgages and banks, as well as Wall Street) and that foreign foods are poisoning Americans, and that American made goods are usually better for comparable prices.....then just go on and believe it, but the facts and statistics don't support those views.
I have a friend who is as conservative as they come and I am certainly left of center but we have wonderful conversations and find frequently we differ more on tactics than on goals.

Technically yes, Canadians are North Americans, but usually we refer to people from the USA as Americans and Canadians as Canadians. I guess if your country is called the United States of America, calling you Americans is just for short for a citizen, of the United States of America.

This is my last post on this topic. There really is no need to continue. I've seen you drag these arguments on and on before, just so you can have the last word. In this case, feel free to have it.
I will say this. I am very sensitive to this topic. Regardless of who is to blame, i have seen many of my close friends, co-workers, and former students hurt by NAFTA, out sourcing, lopsided free trade deals and tactics. You may have friends and relatives in the U.S., and you may own property here. The fact remains that you have not lived through what many Americans have endured, and I hope that you never will. I have always tried to have tolerance and understanding for those with whom I disagreed. I tried to instill those same values in my students. At the same time, I have little patience for those who criticize and belittle my country for its mistakes. No one likes to hear that they are hated, even if it may be partially true. The United States has survived many dark moments in its history. I have faith enough to believe that it will survive this down turn. I still get a lump in my throat when I stand for the Pledge of Alligence and look at Old Glory. I thank God that I live in the greatest country in the world.
Your own Prime Minister, Steve Harper, rose from the ranks of the people when he formed the National Coalition of Citizens. Though he may not be perfect, it is good to see that kind of leadership. Though Isell has often told me that I am a dreamer when it comes to thinking that the people can make changes, I'm still the foolish romantic who believes that it can happen. In spite of the banks (in all countries), in spite of the big corporations (in all countries), in spite of the corruption in government (in all countries), and in spite of nationalistic and isolationist philosophies butting heads with free trade and brow beaten workers (in all countries), I still believe that THE PEOPLE will bring back the ideals set forth by our forefathers.
Regardless of our differences stated here, I wish you and all of the posters on this site well. May you all prosper from the fruits of your labor, and be blessed for the moral and ethical standards by which you live. To our younger posters here, I know that you and your children will bring our country back to its former greatness. To our older posters here, I know that you will guide and encourage your children and grandchildren to do so. God bless.
Richard
Invoice on a GLS Base is about $20,950 or thereabouts with typical accessories (21650 MSRP), then there's $1,000 dealer cash and $5-600 in Holdback.

What? Not even for me?
I'm glad I'm a citizen of the U.S.A. However, I like Canada, too - as the following story illustrates.
Was in Toronto on business. The company hosting me had season tickets to the Blue Jays, so I was taken to the Sky Dome (now Rogers Centre?) and had a wonderful time in seats about 10-15 rows behind the first base dugout.
Around the 6th or 7th inning, all the lights and the scoreboard flickered. Didn't think anything of it.
After the game, my host and I were leaving the stadium - he to catch his train home, me to my hotel - when I realized that all the lights were out.
Yep, a pretty decent sized blackout had struck downtown.
Now, in most American cities, you might see looting and general disorderly behavior. In Canada, I got to my hotel to find that all the guests were in the bar trying to drink all the beer before it got warm.
Someone once noted that Toronto is like New York if it were run by the Swiss. After about a dozen trips there, I can agree with that statement. It was, without a doubt, the cleanest big city I've ever had the fortune to visit.
Conservative, liberal, libertarian, American, Canadian, Mexican - we are all citizens of this great planet we call Earth, and sometimes I wonder if we aren't as good custodians of what we have than we think we are.
I sometimes think the political rhetoric is just too much - extremism on both sides of the aisle. If this trend continues, I fear that we'll end up in political gridlock.
G'night, y'all.
Then it was very clever and well done.
Thanks for the definition.

Thanks...I'll have the last word then.
All I ever said was that NAFTA or free trade was not the cause of this recession, which started in the US and spread to other countries.
I don't know what I said that was so bad about the US. That foreign fruit and vegetables was not the cause of food poisoning? That our textile industry went down at the same time as yours, so I don't see how that was the cause of people losing their homes?
I did say Canadians use caps or pins when they travel, because people see Canadians as being more friendly probably. That's not me being critical, it is a fact of life and is well known. There happens to be some people in the world who don't like Americans - I don't think that should be a shock to you.
This might hurt you, but it is truthful, there are many people in Canada and in other countries, who actually hate the US. I will always defend the US and have done so. The US is a friendly country for us, we share all your culture and have a similar way of life, when you prosper we proper, when you are hurting we hurt. When 9/11 happened we felt your pain. We were proud to send our soldiers to help, and we have a highway of heroes to honor those soldiers who die. Our countries are intertwined and we lost people too who were in the twin towers.
I was saddened when I saw the oil spill in the Gulf. People's homes and way of life ruined because of poor laws and rules regarding drilling. I guess some would say I am being critical - I am, but not at your great country, at the policy makers who let that happen.
I worked for an American company for 16 years. It was a job I loved, and I liked the American way of doing business...very different from the Canadian way. It was fast and just get things done and not as slow and stuffy. I was very independent, could travel etc as long as the sales came in.
Do you think I would buy property in a country I don't like? Or a country I don't believe in? Or that I have travelled in many times...Chicago in two weeks from now? What a great city by the way....love the architecture and the parks by the waterfront.
I do have opinions....I watch NBC news every night because I am interested in what is happening in your country and the world.
If you think I am being critical of the USA from anything I have said then I think you are far too sensitive.
I probably want the same things from my government as you do from yours. Honesty and fiscal responsibility for one thing. Every week a politician is caught with his hand in the cookie jar. We aren't as rigid in our loyalty to political parties, but I will only vote for a Conservative Party as they are our only hope for trying to be fisically responsible. But, our Conservatives are still a few degrees left of your Republican values (not being critical, just stating the facts).
You can believe what you want to, but if you had friends like me in the world, you would never have to worry about the safety of your country ever again.
And that is the last I will say about the subject too unless asked.

Indeed, the lack of respect for our land by _part_ of our citizens in the US is starkly shown by visiting Niagara FAlls, NY, then driving into Niagara Falls, ON, and northward along the river. Our first visit to the parks area of NF, ON, was on Canada Day. There were people strolling all over the place dressed fit-to-kill, so as to speak. It was a true respect for the importance of the Day. Impressive.

They are all bias and I just have to take that into account. I think people tend to watch the one that is bias in your favor (I even use American spelling, it is the kind of sensitive person I am - Cdn is favour). Fox is of course ultra Conservative, and that would be my choice, but my wife thinks it is too bias to the right (though she is a conservative also, but not as gung ho as me), so to maintain harmony we will watch CNN - she's OK with that.
I can watch the NBC National News and just get the facts and filter out the slant of the news. Most entertainment people are socialist or liberal, pro union, anti-Israel etc., so I just have to read through that. At home I read The National Post which is our ultra Conservative national newspaper, which suits me just fine.

Great post.
Again we agree.
I will say something twice, maybe even three times to try to prove my point but after that I stop. If having the last word means you win the argument, then you will always win arguments with me. I tend to believe that if you can’t grasp what I’m saying after I repeat myself once or twice you’re not going to so why bother? To make this car talk relevant it’s kinda like you can’t get a dyed in the wool BMW owner to understand why someone would buy a different car.
Like this old story that I’m sure we have all heard:
A man was doing some shopping and passed by two guys who were having a discussion on a street corner. The discussion sounded interesting so he stop to listen for a while then went on his way. He thought to himself, that one guy is an idiot he ought to stop arguing, he is clearly wrong. He goes about his shopping and about 20 minutes later he comes by these same two guys but now they are both red faced, loud and trying even harder to make their point. Again he stops to listen then goes on his way. This time he’s thinking to himself, “gee, now they’re both idiots. I can’t remember which one I agreed with earlier”.
Like I said before, three times is enough for me. If I can’t make an idiot of myself by then I’m out.

OK, so I've mentioned I was back in the hunt to replace the Genesis. From preliminary research in the "large car category under 40K" the Buick LaCrosse and the Ford Taurus were the two best candidates.
Drove them both and determined the Taurus was out of the running due to the lack of interior space in such a large car and that the lease wasn't that great.
Sooooo.... onto test drive number 2 of the Buick. Tuesday I called up the salesperson around 5 asking if I could come in around 6 and grab a demo for an extended test drive. He says "no problem I'm here all night"
I get there around 6 and he is busy with another customer, but the General Manager speaks to me and gives me the keys to his personal demo and his business card with cell number if I had any questions while driving it. I took the car and put it through its paces for about an hour and 30 miles of mixed driving. This extended drive sold me on the car, and at this point I am thinking that when I got back to the dealership I will be ready to talk #s. I get back and the salesman I initially dealt with was still with another customer. I thought that was odd, as he knew I was coming and either double booked or someone just showed up. It took a few minutes, but the manager came up to me and asked if I was being helped. I explained that I was ready to talk #s but my salesman was busy. He says to give him a minute to talk to my salesman. It appeared he was unhappy with him based on body language and brought over another salesperson explaining he would be helping me. I wasn’t sure what to do, but, I didn’t want to leave and come back a third night.
I wanted a Black/Beige with all but one $1440 package (HIDs, blind zone alert and HUD). Naturally the dealer didn't have any in stock. I said "can you get one?" and of course it was possible to locate one. When talking price I wanted a little better deal because I thought there was another 5-700 (based on Edmund’s invoice #) that could lower the lease payment another 15 bucks a month or so.
The manager explained that he couldn't/wouldn't go that low on a dealer trade. We discussed for a few minutes and I asked to see available options on his lot. He showed me a Black/Grey just like I wanted except with the extra $1440 package. I said that I would take that one if he "made me a deal I couldn't refuse". That deal ended up being 10 bucks less a month than the cheaper one and right at the published invoice. Needless to say, the deal was made and I am now driving a 2012 Buick LaCrosse. It really was quick and painless, got back to the dealer around 7 and was out by 9.
Of course, pics or it didn't happen:

Congratulations! Terrific deal, I don't think you will do much better than that.
I think letting you take the car out for a test ride really helps. It is hard to refuse buying a new car when you take it out without a salesperson in the car.
You did a lot of preliminary work to get there, so you did your homework well.
I would love to know what the story was with the first salesman.

The dealer was probably losing the holdback he made on his own cars. The dealer trade was probably just a staight buy rather than trading something in demand that the other dealer wanted off your dealer's lot. That happened to us on our last car purchase.
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
If I were to assume, I think he took an "up" while I was on the test drive of the manager's demo.
Imid, thanks! The manager did mention to me that he wouldn't lower the price any more on the dealer trade because he would be splitting the holdback. I really did better buying the one off his lot, I got my exterior color and in all honesty as long as I got a light interior I was happy. I don't like black interior.

Not that there is really anything wrong with either car (both 2005 Hondas with mid-upper 60K miles), but you get tired of the same old same old after a while, and they start to get a little seedy around the edges (particularly the minivan).
1 more year. Xmas 2012 present for the family, new car for my wife! Oh, and something older/used for me to drive while my daughter uses my Accord. Though could just keep the van, and get me a new car... Wonder if i could sell the wife on that deal?

IIRC, the dealer receives the holdback on the car that is traded away - not the one they got. So if it sits on the other dealer's lot until the holdback is worthless. they get nothing.
Not to downgrade tjc's purchase/lease, but he has a couple year lease. He's renting a car. Just go to Hertz and rent one for a while. Heck, rent it for a year. Hertz would likely give you a toaster or an umbrella and your need would be fulfilled.
