Well, they wouldn't make the deal when given the chance. Don't know how many more chances they needed?
In 2005 I bought a Mazda Tribute (Ford Escape in disguise). One Mazda dealer 30 miles away had an ad in the paper, very nice deal. I’m driving down the freeway on a Saturday afternoon, headed for the Mazda dealer to make the deal. Lo and behold, what do I see? A new Mazda dealer, much closer to my house. I pull in, show them the newspaper ad, they tell me it’s a “come on”, a “rip off”, “you’ll never get that deal”, etc. I go on my way, arrive at the dealership which ran the ad. When I pull out the ad, they take one look and say, “We have 3 of ‘em. What color would you like?”
I do, but I take care of my mother (85 yrs young). She's lived with us over 4 years now
What a nice gesture to care for your aging mother. You are a good son and your mother must be immensely proud of you. Blessings.
Speaking of change, yesterday I drove by a local Chevy dealer to take a close look at the new 2014 Impala. Wow! How intoxicating. Immediately my 2011 Buick LaCrosse CXS felt old by comparison.
In January at the New England auto show I couldn't get close to the "roped-off" Impala but it looked great from a distance. Yesterday, I had a chance to sit inside and soak in the ambiance and breathe that new car smell. The Impala is much larger than the LaCrosse and it looks and feels upscale and substantial. The LTZ model on display was stickered at $41K. Ouch!
How does it drive? Don't know as there were none available for a test drive.
But, will a F-150 solve your problem? Isn't it a long way up to get inside?
That's what I was going to say - she progressed from a cane to a walker in a year. In another year, he'll have to scoop her up and lift her into the truck. Then he'll be looking to trade it in on an Escape that has a lower hip point to make it easier for her to get in and out.

Congrats to Imid. And I agree, he is enormously knowledgeable about Buick products. He imparted some sage advice about the Buick LaCrosse when I was thinking of buying a Buick back then. Thank's for that man.
Nonetheless, 20,000 posts in ten years seems almost like a fulltime job. I hope the benefits are commensurate with the advice dispensed.

A rear camera can be a useful safety device. But there are lots of other "self-park" crap tech that I do not agree with on newer vehicles. If you can't stand the heat...ya shouldn't be cooking in the kitchen, I say.
All this extra tech just creates a more necessary marriage with your dealer. Usually forced marriages aren't a good thing.
driver 100...re the power windows...I would! I hate them...mostly in the winter time. They put them as std on even the cheapest entry level cars, but none are designed with strong enough hardware and electric motors to break them free when there is just a little ice freezing them. Even many high end cars do not have powerful enough electric windows. I see their purpose with a 4 or more door family type vehicle whose kids do not do as they are told, and I needed one for the passenger side of my big truck so that I could lower it to see my mirrors because the front wheel threw slush etc on the window and sometimes the only way you could see out was to lower it. It was a cabover truck , so that window was literally about 5' farther away than I could reach from the driver's seat.
I would trade power windows on an entry level car, for keyless entry in a heartbeat.

That's what I figured. Unfortunately, that results in jibberish tossed in wherever you use some symbols...and makes me at least stop reading once that jibberish is encountered.
I really agree with what Imid says about buying packages. I would really consider buying an Audi S4, but it only comes with sport wheels and tires, which means putting on snow tires for the winter. I like the car mainly for the added performance and the interior, but I don't need or want tires that won't perform in snow. It doesn't make sense to exclude people who want the features, but don't want racing wheels/tires.
Much better...I could read that post and I understand what you are saying.
It is hard for a new business to cut you as good a deal. Generally, they have more expenses as they either bought an existing business or they have built a whole new dealership.
Generally, I think the guy who has been around a long time has paid for his business and can cut you a better deal.

That may or may not be accurate, but it doesn't fit here. The dealership with the advertised price was so new they were operating out of a temporary building, a travel trailer sorta/kinda. The dealership that was closer to me, who would not even try to match the advertised price, was so new I hadn't heard of them, but they had a nice conventional building.
I realize that newspapers are dying, but I do miss the days of great sale prices in the Friday Houston Chronicle.
I was never huge on a full size spare, until I damaged a tire on my 09 Genesis and had to wait 2 days for a special order tire! I wasn't driving on a doughnut, so it sat parked for the two days.
First off, my thoughts and prayers are with those who perished in yesterday's F4 tornado.
But I've been thinking, why would someone want to live in Moore, OK? It must be one hell of a town.
According to Wikipedia, "the city of Moore has been damaged by significant tornadoes on October 4, 1998, May 3, 1999, May 8, 2003, and May 10, 2010. [And May 20, 2013]. The May 3, 1999 tornado that hit Moore was rated an F5 on the Fujita scale, and was one of the strongest and most destructive tornadoes in world history."
Obviously insurance takes away the risk of moral hazard, and although we don't live in Oklahoma we pay for the destruction by a bump in our insurance premiums. By the way, I hope Kirstie is okay, I believe she lives somewhere in the Midwest.

A friend said to me today, Why don't they build hurricane shelters in Oklahoma?" They could be like fallout shelters, built like basements.
You know they are going to happen, so why not just go underground. There seems to be warning time, usually at least 30 minutes. Better than living through 200 + mph winds while everything is being torn apart.
Thanks for the concern - I'm in Columbia, Missouri, so I'm several hundred miles away. Houdini1 was closer, and I believe they got smacked pretty hard with storms and warnings. It was supposed to be sketchy here, but we just had a brief period of hail, some strong winds, and some rain - just enough to knock of some tree leaves and tiny branches. Feeling VERY lucky today.

That may or may not be accurate, but it doesn't fit here.
Not sure! It sounds to me like the dealer with the lower price had less overhead expense for a building. I could have your story wrong, but you I believe you bought from the dealer operating from a trailer. The dealer operating from a new building wouldn't match the offer.
I am not saying the rule has no exceptions. I am just saying generally, I have observed, that when I sold 2 businesses, the new guy had the added expense of paying for the business, so prices went up.
My very excellent dentist sold his practice to some sharpies from the big city. All of a sudden they find all kinds of problems and want to do all kinds of cosmetic changes including whitening. In fact, they made a little office where a nice associate shows you all the things they can do for you.
I found a good old fashioned dentist who has been around and would rather be honest in his assessments. He says whitening could be dangerous because no one knows what it will do over the long run - we are talking about changing the chemical make-up of tooth enamel. He also makes enough money without trying to do make work projects to line his pockets.
That is why I say generally, a long established dealer could have an advantage of having lower overhead (sometimes corporate comes in and makes them update their dealership - which could change my whole theory).
Sunroofs are a good example I use mine infrequetly and cold certainly live without it. ,
I like most new gadgets and think they add to the enjoyment of driving my car; *Sunroof. I just like the extra light that comes in on cloudy or dark days *Cruise control; Don't use too often, but nice to give legs and knees a break on a long stretch of road. *Full size spare would be nice (any spare would be nice when you have RFTs) just so you have a real tire on the car, in case it is Christmas Day and you get a flat and shops aren't open. *Power door locks - keyless entry is even better. Don't have to fish the key out of my pocket. *Blue Tooth-If you have to talk on the phone it is the only way to do it. *GPS - Better than carrying 10 maps around which are never where you need them. Also tells you ahead of time whether to be on the right or the left for an upcoming turn. *Automatic headlights. Seems really crude to have to remember to turn on or off headlights if I drive a car without them. *Hard drive - Much better than trying to slide CDs in and out while driving. Same with using USB music.
I can't think of too much I wouldn't want. My car doesn't have the lane change warnings but my wife's car does......it is a great feature, allowing you to change lanes much easier without spraining your neck.
Once you get used to any feature, such as the rear camera, it is hard to go without it.
The parking feature I think I can live without, but, occassionally, if I am really tired, I wish I had that too.
rear parking sensors/camera blind spot monitor Bluetooth Hard drive/USB/Ipod integration NAV is nice, but an Android phone or Garmin is still better than most in dash units
In all honesty, power everything, keyless entry, auto temp control are pretty much must haves for me. I'm spoiled and not afraid to admit it!
I could do without a Sunroof (although I've had one for years), heated seats, and the true "keyless" system.
Thanks kyfdx, roadburner, graphicguy, bwia, and anyone else I missed. I appreciate the notoriety. It is strange to have talked about myself; I usually don't talk about my own self. Strange to do that.
Bwia: >20,000 posts in ten years seems almost like a fulltime job. I hope the benefits are commensurate with the advice dispensed.
The rewards are having known a lot of good people here in the forums. So that makes the reward worthwhile. Speaking of those good people, I was hoping for a post from Richard64, because he's one of the many good people I've known here--always a gentleman and full of sage advice from his heart--but I'm afraid he's left.
Sunroof? You are so full of it. Didn't you just sell your BMW convertible?
You may be talking to me. If you are, all I can say is a sunroof is a lot different than a convertible.
Under perfect conditions, there is nothing better than a convertible. Some of those conditions are; driving less than 50mph, not too hot and sunny, little wind, have to be going on a pleasure drive usually, just not worth it for a short drive to the supermarket.
I just found I didn't use it enough for it to outweigh the negatives. Here are some negatives; *No RWD so you have to change to snow tires *Only put the roof down about 20 times a year at most *Very small backseat *Small trunk even with the roof up, really small with roof down *My wife will only let me put the roof down on a cloudy day or in the evening, *Ride is not as smooth and solid as a sedan *Very low, so hard to get in and out, also lack of interior room
Advantages of a sunroof; Gives you a more open space feeling Lets the light in, even on a cloudy day Can open roof to let fresh air in
If I had 3 or 4 cars a convertible would be fine. I like the larger 535 because of the extra interior room and for the handling for getting to Florida and back...about 1500 miles each way. Once in Florida I wouldn't really want a convertible at all.....way too hot and sunny.
btw.....our dog doesn't like too much direct sun either. She prefers the sedan with sunroof.
I've been driving my 1975 2002 the past few days. It lacks: Power steering Power door locks Power seats Power windows Automatic temp control
The only modern touch I've added has been an Alpine AM/FM/CD player with SiriusXM and iPod compatibility- along with decent speakers. Honestly, if it had A/C I'd drive it year round. It easily keeps up with traffic and will cruise all day at 80 mph. Best of all, it lets me know I am driving a car- not piloting a video game...

Holy cow! Where do you live that ice inside the car is a problem? My brother lived in Minnesota and now lives in Norway (150 miles north of Oslo.) He's never had that problem or heard of it happening.
Where do you live that ice inside the car is a problem?
I think he means the windows get frozen and you can't lower them if you have power windows.
My 2004 X3 did that in very cold weather. It was very embarrassing when I went through the drive-thru restaurant and the guy in the 1998 Ford Focus ahead of me can raise and lower his window fine....and me in the X3 has to try to open the door a bit and pay and get my coffee thru an open door.
Other than that, I have never had a problem with a power window getting frozen. I think the X3 had a lot of thick rubber insulation and huge windows, and the water got trapped way down....and it froze. Dealer installed new insulation but that didn't help.
I think crank windows can get frozen just as easily.
But I've been thinking, why would someone want to live in Moore, OK? It must be one hell of a town.
It's just like choosing to live anywhere else - it's what one wants, likes, family, et al.
Why would anyone live in Phoenix? It's a desert, it's hot, makes no sense.
Why would anyone live in Minnesota? It's cold, it snows, makes no sense.
Why would anyone live in Florida? It's hot and humid, hurricanes sweep in and flatten everything, makes no sense.
Why would anyone live in California. The ground shakes, it never rains, it rains too much, the mountains slide into the valleys, the mountains catch on fire, makes no sense.
One of my best friends I went to college with lives in OK city. I've been trying to reach him for 2 days....no luck. Hoping for the best.
Convertibles.....my older sister had a Fiat 850 Spider 'vert. Great fun to ride in when I was a kid. I remember it being a poor excuse for a reliable car, though.
robr2...good analogy on why people live where they live. Makes no sense.
About 15 years ago, the company I was with asked me (not demanded me) to move to the Bay Area where the HQ was (San Jose). I thought about it, but uprooting my son, who was still in school, hauling the then GF with me, selling my house (which they were going to do for me) and finding something around San Jose wasn't appealing.
There would have been a pretty sizeable raise. But, when looking at homes that were even comparable to mine, my housing outlay would have been 3X-4X of what it is in Cincinnati.
Understand, I live in a nice neighborhood and my house is nice, but I'm by no means living opulently.
Take my house and put it in the Bay Area on 3/4 acre and we're talking $1.2M-$1.3M. In Cincinnati? $350K.
Not really a modern feature, but having a good stereo and speakers trumps just about everything in my book.. except maybe power windows. It's one item that is worth upgrading as its used every time you step inside your car.
The speakers in my 2012 Civic really suck. It's like listening to music from inside a rusty soup can. The kind you made as a kid with the string attached to talk to someone 5 feet away.
Not sure if I will purchase my Civic at end of lease. So still thinking of putting in aftermarket speakers.
Oklahoma City is about 400 miles south of Kansas City. We did have a little bad weather that evening here in KC, but nothing serious at all.
As it happens, we lived in OK City for about 6 years during the 1970's, and it was a wonderful place to live. I played golf many times in Moore, at a course called "Broadmoor".
OKC is a big sprawling place. At one time it had the largest land area of any city in the country. Moore is on the south side, just north of Norman, home of the Univ. of OK and the Sooners. We lived about 30 miles away on the NW side of OKC. Certainly my prayers go out to everyone in that area.
One of our regulars lives in the area, in Edmond, I believe (gogiboy?) That town is up North of the city so he should be OK, except for being traumatized. I played a lot of golf there also, at Oaktree and Kickingbird.
And, that is why New England is the place to live!

Thanks for asking. We're okay here in Stillwater (about 60 miles north of Moore, OK). The fellow across the street from me works for a natural gas company in Carney, OK. Carney was slammed on Sunday (day before the Moore tornado), but my neighbor's company was spared. Carney is about 30 miles away.
We moved here in August of 1989 and in May of 1990 our neighborhood was hit by a F1. It never even touched, but hovered above street level. Quite a few houses were damaged so badly that they required a complete rebuild. One was never rebuilt and someone erected a basketball hoop; the foundation of the house became a de facto concrete court.
One can only imagine in their worst nightmares what it must be like to confront an F4 or F5 monster. I remember my wife and I hugged our toilet, while our ears popped and all the water gurgled out of the pipes during our relatively wimpy F1. Our yard was full of nail covered pieces of lumber, shingles from dozens of other houses and the ubiquitous wet insulation over everything It looks like mud in the videos seen showing the aftermath. One child was killed about a block from our house. It's not an experience I hope to repeat.
Big storms are a constant threat in the spring--and sometimes in the fall. We had an underground storm cellar installed in our garage last year. Joplin was the final motivating impetus. Because of the clay soil, and expense basements add to the cost of new houses, few have them and most that do are much older (60s and earlier). Despite the killer tornado of 1999, which followed a very similar track to the most recent brute, a large number of folks did not buy shelters. It's possible their thinking was that tornadoes are like lighting and only strike the same place once--a fallacy that has been proven wrong for both.
Have any of you ever seen the satellite views of Joplin before and after their twister? Talk about sobering! Moore will likely be even more devastating. Our OKC news have gone to 24 hour coverage. Haven't seen anything like it since the Kennedy assassination.
Have any of you ever seen the satellite views of Joplin before and after their twister? Talk about sobering! Moore will likely be even more devastating.
Thank goodness you are okay and thanks for the update. I have never experienced a real tornado but about twelve years ago a small one hit in the Atlanta area and my daughter's commencement had to be cancelled. Talk about disappointment. We never got to leave our hotel room.

LOL That was funny.
I wondered about that too. I thought Mako loved the Mustang.
I do, but I take care of my mother (85 yrs young). She's lived with us over 4
years now. She really liked going places with me in the Mustang. Even with a
cane it was easy. Now she has to use a walker or wheelchair and it just won't
fit in the trunk. I'm not crazy about using my wife's Denali so I figured a truck
would work better for me.

I like most new gadgets and think they add to the enjoyment of driving my car;
*Sunroof. I just like the extra light that comes in on cloudy or dark days
*Cruise control; Don't use too often, but nice to give legs and knees a break on a long stretch of road.

Some of my favs are:
rear parking sensors/camera
blind spot monitor
Bluetooth
Hard drive/USB/Ipod integration
NAV is nice, but an Android phone or Garmin is still better than most in dash units
In all honesty, power everything, keyless entry, auto temp control are pretty much must haves for me. I'm spoiled and not afraid to admit it!
I could do without a Sunroof (although I've had one for years), heated seats, and the true "keyless" system.

>20,000 posts in ten years seems almost like a fulltime job.

I just found I didn't use it enough for it to outweigh the negatives. Here are some negatives;
*No RWD so you have to change to snow tires
*Only put the roof down about 20 times a year at most
*Very small backseat
*Small trunk even with the roof up, really small with roof down
*My wife will only let me put the roof down on a cloudy day or in the evening,
*Ride is not as smooth and solid as a sedan
*Very low, so hard to get in and out, also lack of interior room
Advantages of a sunroof;
Gives you a more open space feeling
Lets the light in, even on a cloudy day
Can open roof to let fresh air in
If I had 3 or 4 cars a convertible would be fine.

It should....the Premium Plus interior is nice too, but, the S4 interior is really special, and blows away anything in a 3 Series.

I've been driving my 1975 2002 the past few days. It lacks:
Power steering
Power door locks
Power seats
Power windows
Automatic temp control
The only modern touch I've added has been an Alpine AM/FM/CD player with SiriusXM and iPod compatibility- along with decent speakers. Honestly, if it had A/C I'd drive it year round. It easily keeps up with traffic and will cruise all day at 80 mph. Best of all, it lets me know I am driving a car- not piloting a video game...

Holy cow! Where do you live that ice inside the car is a problem? My brother lived in Minnesota and now lives in Norway (150 miles north of Oslo.) He's never had that problem or heard of it happening.
May I suggest rolling up the windows? :P

Kind of hits all the buttons, though...
-slow
-good only for cruising......
Hope you are able to get hold of him.
I've got an aunt and a cousin who live just east of OKC. I've asked my folks to see if all is well.
gogiboy, IIRC, lives in OK as well. Talk to us, gogi - gotta know if you're OK.
Kirstie, glad to hear that you are okay. Stay safe.
By the way, I just heard on the news that the tornado was reclassified to an F5 and it was 60 times as powerful as the Hiroshima bond. The images below says it all.

Yeh, but Buffalo.....come on now, there can't be any logical reason for wanting to live there.

Gogiboy
I'll have to ask my brother if this has been a problem for him.
Thank goodness you are okay and thanks for the update. I have never experienced a real tornado but about twelve years ago a small one hit in the Atlanta area and my daughter's commencement had to be cancelled. Talk about disappointment. We never got to leave our hotel room.
