We do have a Costco here and I forgot about them...we got our 55" TV for Florida at Costco and they have good makes and prices there. Costco membership is good for USA and here.
I'll check it out...it is too bad the whole TV is garbage because the remote doesn't work. Actually, I could probably use it for my exercise room....I can just turn it on and off manually, don't need to use the remote except to change channels, and that still works off the cable remote. Brilliant...I'll get even with LG after all...and the next set won't be an LG.

Need an opinion about a TV set. There are a few things that don't work as they should....after a long trip. This one is the 50 inch LG TV in the bedroom. It was bought on March 3 in 2009, so it is 5 years old. It wasn't expensive, just $800 at the time, when most TVs were at least $1500. All that stopped working is the remote....that is the LG remote and the auxiliary universal remote, so I would say it is a fault with the TV.
I called LG and they will send a guy out on Wed to look at it. Service call is $90. Maybe he can fix the remote...more likely needs a new part for the TV to accept the remote signal. Estimated cost by the customer service rep....when asked $300.
I am thinking I am best to cut my losses. Had 5 years use out of the TV, using the Driver Method of cost per use...it works out to $160 a year for decent entertainment value and putting us to sleep. I can get a newer much better 46 or 50 inch Samsung...don't even need Smart for the bedroom for $700 or $800. Or fix the old one for $300, any opinions?
Naturally, you checked the batteries in both remotes? If you're with a cable company, they will give you a new remote for free. On the other hand, you're looking at $390 for part and service. Why not put a couple of hundred with that amount and get yourself a new Samsung? It's the best brand that we have ever owned.

Driver, before you go shopping...I put an object in front of the UV port on the TV once and it made the remote not work. Years later I lost volume via remote the same way as the box changed channels fine, but the volume came from the TV remote port. Check for stuff in front of the TV or cable box UV sensor. Also, if you put in new batteries, are they polarity correct? TVs rarely just stop being remotely controlled.

Mike, I'm so sorry to hear your news. My wife and I went through that terrible experience back in '93. I know something about those sleepless nights and the emotional pain. My sympathy is extended to all of you.
Now for the TV, the same thing happened a few years ago to the TV I just replaced. Since channels were changed using the cable box and volume was controlled through the home theater system the only thing we had to do with any regularity with the TV's remote was turning off and on. So we did it using the controls on the TV itself. You might try that.

@Stickguy, actually once you pass the Fredericksburg area (about 75 miles north of Richmond) the drive is cake. I95 was torn up pretty good through Richmond last year but it's probably done by now. You could also follow the signs and take 295 and go around Richmond. It's a little further but less traffic and you can move a little faster.

Thanks, I did insert new batteries. I looked up LG TV sets - remote not working and it seems to be a common fault with LGs. I have found a pretty basic 46" Samsung for $600 US $700 (Cdn). Our main TV is a Samsung and it has been good. Thanks for confirming what I was thinking of doing.
There is one last try, my internet specialist guy from work is going to take one last shot at it before I buy.
@mako1a said:I put an object in front of the UV port on the TV once and it made the remote not work.
Thanks Mako, I have done that too. In this case the TV is on a bracket...nothing in front of it.
Some people on Google say you find a remote button on the back of the TV and put in the headphones. I'll try that too before buying. It seems a shame to toss a TV because the remote won't work.
@snakeweasel said:the TV's remote was turning off and on. So we did it using the controls on the TV itself. You might try that.
The TV is in the bedroom, and we need the sleep timer. It only works with the remote. I suppose I could use it in my exercise room. I don't need a remote there....and if I need to change channels I can get some exercise by actually walking up to the TV. It would be better than the 27" cathode tv that I now use.

My longest day behind the wheel was .... well, I suppose there were two.
First was a drive from Childress, TX to Phoenix, AZ. Google Maps shows it as 864 miles. Did it in 15 hours with a co-driver. Bor-ing.
Second was a solo trip from my hometown in SoCal to visit a friend, who lived in Arcata, CA. While the number of miles was shorter (637), it was about as long time-wise, since there were no interstates involved (US 101 is a divided highway, but speed limit is less than on I-5). Plus I got lost in San Francisco before crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. Then, it's mostly two lane from there north. Thought I'd never get there. And, I stayed in the same state the whole trip!
Here in southeast Florida, from December through May, is our dry season - very little rainfall. That requires sprinkliners to run twice a day. All parking spaces are in the front of the building adjacent to lots of grass and shrubs.
When one of this sprinkler heads breaks down, it spews less-than-clean water from our lakes all over my car. If I don't dry the car down early in the morning, when the water dries, it leaves these "blotches" all over the car.
This happens at least two or three times a year. Well, it happened Saturday. I called my building rep (luckily he is one of the VP's on the condo board) and they finally arrived this morning (grounds crew) to replace several sprinkler heads by my car.
Of course my car is once again about as soaked as it gets after a thunder storm. The aggravation is that all sprinkler water comes from the many lakes we have that surround the property as well as serve as water hazards for the 18 hole golf course in our condo development. That water is filthy and contaminated, as would be expected.
Richard...fiance is indeed a very caring and compassionate person. She always says she has the perfect job teaching 2nd graders. You don't often hear people say that, particularly given the status of the American Education System these days.
Driver....lots of people who seem to offer little to no benefit whatsoever have come crawling out of the woodwork to help with the MBO....for a hefty fee, of course. Then there are the money people themselves. I'm a direct person. I have a hard time understanding those who seemingly talk in riddles and "what ifs". There are no what ifs. The numbers speak for themselves. Kind of like buying a car. Either you have a deal, or you don't. Give me a "yes" or "no" answer. I can live with that. We're giving up a big chunk of the company for their investment. At least they're getting something substantial in return. Try getting that at the local Savings and Loan.
What I can't live with is all the talk about "if you hop on one leg, while tapping your head and rubbing your stomach, we might consider giving you funding". I'm not their dog.
Whether we can pull it off or not, it's certainly been an education.
Driver...see if your LG has an app for your remote you can put on your phone. I use my phone to control my Roku. I have a Panasonic plasma in my home theater room. It also has a remote app I can put on my phone.
boom....thanks....appreciate the kind thoughts.
Mako....very cool car. And look....it came with the "beautiful woman option".
Mike...is it worth it to get a car cover? Kind of a hassle putting it on and taking it off. But, with no garage.......

WHY I HATE MY PARKING SPACE

Will they give you a space that is not near a sprinkler? One nice thing about Florida is the Florida car wash. Just leave your car outside when it rains and it comes out nice and clean.
In the north your car gets dirty from all the industrial waste that lands on it.
I am feeling the long trip now....in my lower back area. I wish I had Mikes massager he has in his MB, I would have left it on for the whole trip.
I thought of another great invention. There should be a speaker near the filler cap so you can listen to your radio or media devices while filling up. Sometimes you may miss something you were listening to. And, that makes me wonder about those little TV screens they have at the gas pumps these days, does anyone actually ever watch those...do they ever have anything interesting on.....can you actually follow anything for the 3 minutes it takes to gas up? Does anyone need to watch a tv that badly? I do like the one's in elevators though...at least you don't have to stand awkwardly facing the front and watch the numbers going by.

Aaaah, she is typical of most of the teachers in schools. She loves the students and cares about them. She sounds like a keeper.
You don't often hear people say that, particularly given the status of the American Education System these days.
The American Education System has suffered being the political target of politicians for their own gain financially and their own power in the end. Most of the American Educational System is working well with teachers who care and do their job, despite the smearing by Limbaugh and others, who have encouraged having a charter school parallel system from which they themselves benefit.
@imidazol97 said:

imid...you'll get no argument from me, or my fiance. There are a large, and very dedicated contingency of teachers who do care about educating their students, and don't care about the political hot bed that education has become.
I really, really try hard to stay out of our political discussions here. But, what is being asked for in education has less to do with teachers in reality, and more to do with what is percieved as acceptable societal norms.
You can't teach those who don't show up. Nor, can you teach those who refuse to be taught because they don't have anyone emphasizing the importance of education once they go home (or wherever they go) every afternoon.
A miracle just happened! My LG remote started working again.
Actually, our IT expert told me to get some headphone jacks and stick it in and out a few times in the place where you would plug the headphones in. He said there could be a vacation switch or a remote switch on the back that I should try switching...and to turn the TV off for a few minutes. So, I did all of these things and then I took the remote control again, thinking there is no way this is going to change anything....it sounds like wishful hoping, but, the TV came on with the remote...and all the functions work.
My IT guy has done this so many times. I think there is a lesson here but not sure what it is.
Some of us are pretty helpless in the age of technology.
GGsaid:Nor, can you teach those who refuse to be taught because they don't have anyone emphasizing the importance of education once they go home
I was an elementary school teacher at one time in my illustrious career. I often thought, most of the kids I taught didn't really understand it was a privelege to be able to learn. I believe parents should instill that in their children. Also, about 1/4 of the students disrupt the other 75% who do want to learn. I think, if a child is disrupting a class, he should be put in a large room with others who don't want to learn, and they could read or learn on their own. We cater to the lowest common denominator in our classrooms. Just one persons opinion.

Mike, I'm so sorry to hear your news. My wife and I went through that terrible experience back in '93. I know something about those sleepless nights and the emotional pain. My sympathy is extended to all of you.
Richard
First of all I am glad you made it home OK.

Sorry for the loss of friends, all I can say is that I will keep them in my thoughts and prayers.

robr2, what a lousy break for your friend, the family and all their friends. Good friends can be very helpful at a time like this. You are all in my prayers...especially the children.

I'm not paying my dues in protest of the crappy new forum software.
I can't read the forum daily. By the time I log in, there are 200+ posts. Even if I don't read them all, the stupid new software assumes that I did. So I lose a bunch of posts each time. The old software actually remembered the last post I read. I miss that.
@GG... congrats!!
@Driver, that's some serious driving! Glad you made the trip safe.
@abacomike, no better road car than a box body Town Car. Great huge seats and like riding on a cloud. Miss my 89!

Rob, sorry to hear that. Cancer will touch us all, and it is particularly sad when it strikes people that are so young. My thoughts are with you.

Thanks Mako, I have done that too. In this case the TV is on a bracket...nothing in front of it.
Some people on Google say you find a remote button on the back of the TV and put in the headphones. I'll try that too before buying. It seems a shame to toss a TV because the remote won't work.

That's easy to do...and I have done that too. The TV is suspended from a bracket, so it is clear in front. Thanks though...everything helps.

The TV is in the bedroom, and we need the sleep timer. It only works with the remote. I suppose I could use it in my exercise room. I don't need a remote there....and if I need to change channels I can get some exercise by actually walking up to the TV. It would be better than the 27" cathode tv that I now use.
No idea is a bad idea!

That's why I hate my parking space.

Sorry....off on another tangent/rant.
Little more catching up....
>

The American Education System has suffered being the political target of politicians for their own gain financially and their own power in the end. Most of the American Educational System is working well with teachers who care and do their job, despite the smearing by Limbaugh and others, who have encouraged having a charter school parallel system from which they themselves benefit.
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
imid...you'll get no argument from me, or my fiance.

I was ready to suggest finding the Reset command that's in the menus somewhere that just puts it back to factory. But I've learned something else.
This discussion has taught me about juicers, car paint repair, buying, life, etc., just too many things to list.
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
I was an elementary school teacher at one time in my illustrious career.
