I'm surprised someone has not called their hand on this violation of Federal Law. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prohibits Tie-In Sales Provisions. IIRC I have heard it paraphrased that if you are REQUIRED to have the service performed a particular place to keep a warranty in effect, they have to provide that service FREE.
""Tie-In Sales" Provisions Generally, tie-in sales provisions are not allowed. Such a provision would require a purchaser of the warranted product to buy an item or service from a particular company to use with the warranted product in order to be eligible to receive a remedy under the warranty. The following are examples of prohibited tie-in sales provisions.
In order to keep your new Plenum Brand Vacuum Cleaner warranty in effect, you must use genuine Plenum Brand Filter Bags. Failure to have scheduled maintenance performed, at your expense, by the Great American Maintenance Company, Inc., voids this warranty."
...and I used those towels to mop up the sweat from hitting a 300 pound buck.
Are you sure that’s all? I know what you mean but not first hand.
In 92’, son #1, with his 8 month old 92’ Grand Prix (his first new car) that he bought a few months after his Penn State graduation (note that I did not say State Penn) hit a dear on Interstate 79 in PA, at about 3 AM. We were living in S. C. at the time and he called on Sunday morning (his regular call-in day, his mother made him do that) and told us what happened early in the morning. He said he caught a glimpse of the dear coming from his left, he was initially going about 70 MPH and he hit the thing going at about 55 MPH (just a guess on his part) he said it made a LOT of noise, and he was glad his apartment had a washing machine so he didn’t have to clean his shorts by hand.
Fortunately he was alright, the car was driveable although banged up to the tune of about $2100, which all things considered, wasn’t all that bad even in 92’.
The thing that surprised me was he didn’t know enough to file a report with the PA State Police until I told him he better do that for insurance purposes which he did and therefore, didn’t have any problems with that.
Not to be out done by his older brother, son #2 hit a deer about 3 years later in broad daylight. He was almost totally stopped and yet the dear still decided to run into the left front fender. That turned out to only cost the insurance company about $400. He also said it made a LOT of noise. FWIW, since he saw it coming down a hill for quite away he didn’t have the same shorts problem as his brother.
Those things are terrible runners/leapers and they ought to make them carry insurance. They are a real menace to drivers but you know that.

The whole justification happens because one is "scheduled" and another is "unscheduled" expense. Many, if not most people live from paycheck to paycheck with null savings (except maybe something in their 401k's) , whether on $20K or $150K salary. They usually get themselves into many scheduled payments of "only" fill in the blank per month totaling their approximate (or above) paychecks, which leaves them no room for something not accounted for. It's easier for them to psychologically deal with scheduled and planned $600/month expense (which adds to $7200/year and over $20K/3years) than unplanned $2000 or even $5000 engine job that may or may not happen once in their ownership. Through successful marketing we are conditioned to think "only" $500/month, not "as much as 20K/3 years and your drive a new car, not that old one.
To that add our (as society, not particular people) tendency to stretch vehicle purchase up or beyond limits of affordability (again, achieved of course through the marketing), which leads to $1000 repair job being disasterous hit in the family budget and great success of Joel's pitch for extended warranty. It's usually sold not as $2500 contract, but as "only blank/month more" protection against terrible failure that may or may not happen - for somebody with zero savings that pitch is quite attractive.
I know the feeling. Over the past 2 weekends, I have been busy, moving gravel, giving the hot-tub its semi-annual cleaning, planting flowers, and creating new flower beds. *sigh*. I even had to use a vacation day! to do manual labor. heh
This week, I get to restain the deck, and rails on the front porch. Plus I need to stain some new wood chairs, and our current deck furniture. She also has 5 gallons of paint in the family room patiently waiting for me.
Now I'm back to work comfortably programming at my desk.
On the bus run this AM on I-90 I saw two dead and a third waiting his turn on the side of the road. Dumbest creatures on earth except when they want to eat my crops.
I have a "nature boy" neighbor who feeds deer in his back yard all summer. Draws them in by the dozens and then goes on vacation whereupon the deer ravage the local farms.
I told him I had a "kill permit" and was going to shoot a few so I didn't go bankrupt. He became very irate. I responded that I could either solve my problem by shooting them or shooting him. Either way the deer would be gone.
As to the car accidents, I have a feeling that the car dealers always have a herd of deer in the back lot. When sales are slow they release a few to play in traffic. The next day all the people with mashed cars come in to buy a new ride. :P

The in-laws just upgraded their ride last week and this now lit a fire under my wife to step up our search, or at least actually start testing cars, which we did yesterday. One of the current finalists is the XC90.
There's a dealer near me that has a few either loaner or demos for sale. They appear to the standard 3.2L models with std options. Their prices are just under 37K. Each has about 7k miles on them and are listed as "new" never titled. Based on edmunds TMV and the available incentives, this does not look like that great a deal, or is it? And, what would be a good price.
Fianlly, since its the end of the month, and with the current gas situation, how flexible would they be?
Ok, you got me there but it ain’t my fault that a spell/grammar checker can’t find this sort of stuff.
As for that EMF thing, it’s real but not to the extent that it will give you a problem. You’d have to practically live within 7/8 feet of a 10,000 HP motor for a decade before any noticeable effects are seen. Of course if you didn’t have your ear muffs on after a couple of hours you’d be deaf if not driven insane by the noise, so, at that point, does it really make a difference.
The radiation produced by a color TV is more harmful and when is the last time you heard of anyone that had a problem attributed with watching too much TV other than diminished intellectual capacity?

That's exactly what happened to me last month. Had my winter tires swapped out for my all-seasons, which were fairly new. Drove home the 5 miles, picked up a nail along the way. Probably right out in front of the tire shop! And, of course, we were heading to DC the next day...!

See, that ought to tell you something. A good price is what research in your area says the same 7K mile car, comparably equipped, is worth.

Thank you for the comment but I do not agree. Only CRT TV's have a EMF field and that is primarily to the back and sides. Distance from the source greatly reduces the EM field.
Most CRT type TV's are gone and no one sits that close to them anyway. I will have to measure the field in my non-hybrid toyota.
Magnetic fields can cause health problems but a definite link to cancer has not been established as far I know.
Most customers have no clue what an EMF is. I was an electronics tech in the Navy so I'm familiar with what you're talking about. But I've had not a one ask about it so they must not know and I would tell them not to worry that the field is probably insignificant and won't denotate any weapons or cause planes to fall out of the sky. Mack :shades:
"As to the car accidents, I have a feeling that the car dealers always have a herd of deer in the back lot. When sales are slow they release a few to play in traffic. The next day all the people with mashed cars come in to buy a new ride. "
Nope, the weather usually takes care of that. You should see the way people drive here at the beach. You'd swear you were in a foreign country. Mack
Heck, they do that at my dealership. I've replaced numerous tires due to screws and bolts dropped by the lot attendants when they are putting the dealership plate frames on new cars.
A nuclear device would create all kinds of EMF, radio communications would be lost, telephones, even cars would quit. Let's hope we never get to that point. :shades:
Oh, I ran into a bunch of those foreign country style drivers over the weekend driving from New Jersey to New Hampshire. We were in slow moving traffic getting on to the Tappan Zee Bridge and some clown in a Cadillac rear ended the Altima in front of him. Traffic was moving maybe 5 mph. How do you not see that?
Waved at BR and greenpea as I passed their general area. Must visit one day.

According to prophetic and channelled writings, the pole and dimensional shifts are simultaneous (but this may not necessarily be the case-as in all things, discernment of all information is the key). About 5 - 6 hours before the actual shift happens, an extraordinary visual phenomenon should take place. The third and fourth dimensions actually begin to interface. Third dimensional consciousness gradually recedes away from us as we approach fourth dimensional consciousness. As the third dimensional grid begins to break down, synthetic objects disappear (say goodbye to your brand new Hi Fi & TV !!). This is one reason that even though there is a 500 million year history of advanced life on this planet, there is virtually no evidence of it. In order to survive a pole-shift, objects must be made purely out of natural materials like the pyramids and the Sphinx—natural materials that are in resonance with the Earth. Even then virtually everything on the planet will be blown away.
Oh, that old tale again. It has 7K miles on it so it is a used car. Never titled doesn’t mean squat as far as I’m concerned but the 7K miles do..
Monroe, "Never titled" does have a bearing on this...it means the dealer is still bound by the invoice price of the car. You can't compare a "new" car...demo or whatever...to one that was already traded in...the dealer obviously isn't going to own them for the same amount. You won't...can't get the same deal for a new one that you can get for a used one. In todays world, 7k miles is nothing...will you even remember how many miles it had on it next year? Try this...find out your best price on one with no miles and see if you can get at least $1,000 better on the demo....if my math is right that should be about .15 a mile...what NADA says is an average cost per mile. If you can get that then you should feel like you got a fair deal.
Fianlly, since its the end of the month, and with the current gas situation, how flexible would they be?
They’re probably going to be a lot more motivated at the end of the month.
No doubt about it....especially if they need the units. The end of the month is almost always the time to buy.
Also a car that has not been titled and is still considered new still qualifies for all the manufacturer incentives. Finally depending on how the car was set up as a demo it may still have either the full time portion of the warranty or the full warranty period.
If the car hasn't been RDRd as a demo then it still has the full four years of its four year 50,000 mile warranty. You are only losing the first 7,000 miles of warranty. Sometimes on a demo you will even get a waiver on the demo miles so you get the full mileage warranty too. This isn't going to happen on a demo with 7,000 miles but might happen to one with 1,000 miles.
Only CRT TV's have a EMF field and that is primarily to the back and sides. Distance from the source greatly reduces the EM field.
Yes, you are right about distance from the source reducing the effect but shielding (like in firewall) also reduces the effect.
Most CRT type TV's are gone and no one sits that close to them anyway.
I disagree that most are gone, most are still around. Take a poll and you’ll find that out pretty quick. I’ll agree that the old CRT’s are on their way out but there are plenty of them still around. Heck, even I bought an HD wide screen in 05’ (put that in you’re tight [non-permissible content removed] pipe and smoke it, Richard). The fact remains, CRT’s have been around for a looong time and lots of people sat pretty close to them over the years without shielding.
I will have to measure the field in my non-hybrid toyota.
I’m sure you will but what do you expect to find?
Magnetic fields can cause health problems but a definite link to cancer has not been established as far I know.
And like I said you have to live on top of the source for a long time. So, what’s all the commotion about? :confuse:

My sister lives in Colorado and one time her and her hubby were driving on a road that runs through a canyon. Well as [bad] luck would have it a herd of elk jumped onto the road, one landing on top of their car and a couple right in front. Needless to say their car got totaled, sister had minor injuries, hubby had more serious ones to the arms and hands and 3 elk were killed. My sister tells me that before they took them away to the hospital all three dead elk were gone. Seems like several of the people that stopped to help my sister and her hubby also helped themselves to free elk.

When I was four years of age, I received a pedal car similar to this for Christmas. A few days later, I "drove" it down the street and turned onto the main boulevard leading into town. A local lady hit me and "totaled" my pedal car. For some unknown reason, I was not injured. But the lady and my mother had to have smelling salts administered. :P Upon hearing of the incident, my father was not angry. He told my mother that he shouldn't have given me a "car" at such a young age. Thus began my love affair with the automobile industry.

I believe that it was Sweden that a couple of decades ago released a comprehensive study on the health effects of electro magnetic fields which studied almost the entire population of the country, if not all the population. They couldn't find ny correlation between magnetic fields and health issues.

Now GP, you know that jmonroe bought that wide screen TV at a mid-night screaming Wal-Mart sale at 50% off plus a 10% coupon that he had been holding for five years. The coupon had long been expired and he got into a fight with the store manager over it. To make matters worse, he sold one of Mrs.jmonroe's dining room chairs, and used coins that he found on the street in front of Wal-Mart. He even drove one of his son's cars to pick it up. Why use his personal gas? Once he got home, he tried to manufacture a rebate card on his old typewriter, and then had the nerve to mail it to the company. As of this afternoon, he has heard nothing from the Sylvania Company. :P
He even drove one of his son's cars to pick it up. Why use his personal gas?
I even did better than that.
At the time I purchased that BIG screen, son #1 worked for Sony at the local TV plant. So, he put it on his Sony CC so he could get the credit card points, drove to the dock, had it loaded into his 02’ Caravan (that keeps it on topic) and then delivered it to me. It ain’t gonna get any better than that.
FWIW, I tried to buy a different brand at one of the big boxes but the salesman lied to me when he said the Panasonic had a dual tuner but it didn’t. My son told me that Sony stopped making dual tuners because they weren’t popular anymore. I had a 10 year old CRT Toshiba that had the dual tuner and I really liked it and was willing to pay more to get it. After not finding what I wanted, I broke down and let him save me around $600.
As of this afternoon, he has heard nothing from the Sylvania Company.
Now see what happens when you make up stories like that. :P

OK ‘andy’, I didn’t forget about you. I just had to straighten out Richard real quick.
You can't compare a "new" car...demo or whatever...to one that was already traded in...the dealer obviously isn't going to own them for the same amount.
Yes I can and I did.
I told this tale a couple of times but I guess you weren’t around.
In 89’ my brother and I negotiated a deal on an 89’ Bonneville demo for our Mother that had about 5K miles on it. We had a price that was a little below invoice, as best we could determine invoice back then. Of course, at fist, the salesman balked saying, “You’re trying to buy this car for less than we paid for it”. To which I said, “Of course we are, it’s a used car as far as we’re concerned, you’ve gotten you use out of it so that’s our price”. Until we got up to leave, he didn’t like our price and then all of a sudden he did. I’m not an unreasonable person but I have to get my way when I know I’m right. They could obviously do the deal or they wouldn’t have done it. Honestly, I was unarmed.
In todays world, 7k miles is nothing...will you even remember how many miles it had on it next year?
You are so right and it was in 89’ also. I’ve bought several used cars in my day so you don’t have to prove this to me. When I said, ”The 7K miles were important to me”, I meant that the miles were my bargaining chip to buy the car towards a used car price and I wasn’t going to pay anywhere near their first price because it was "untitled”. If we didn’t buy it there we could have gone to another dealer or a private party and my brother was ready to do just that.
I’ve said this many times here, “The car buying process is very simple”. It shouldn’t take very long to get done but some people over think the process and believe what they are being told even when a little bit of research proves their point.

I responded that I could either solve my problem by shooting them or shooting him.
That reminds me of a story that was going around when I was in the Navy.
A sailor drove home (topic thing) early from a cruise only to find his wife in bed with another sailor so he shot and killed his wife. As the Captain was about to pronounce sentencing, at his court martial, he said, “Most husbands would have shot the guy not his wife”. To which the sailor said, “I’m in enough trouble as it is, I can’t imagine what you would do to me if I killed half of the Pacific Fleet”. :surprise:
I’ll bet Mack has a follow up to that tale.

with 7K on it, most like a service loaner. That's when they take them out of service.
DId the price include a CPO warranty?
And like JMONROE said, call it what you want, it is a used car. And I don't care what invoice was, trade in or auction buy price, it is worth what the market says it is worth.
Is that the same plant that the infamous Westmoreland Vw Rabbits ?
Yes it is. Like I said, my son worked for Sony (management type bean counter) the reason he left is because he saw them cutting back so he decided to get out while the getting was good (summer of 06').
A little history about that plant in New Stanton PA.
It was originally built but not completed by Chrysler in the early to mid 70's. IIRC, they were going to build the K cars there but decided to stop construction as the plant was nearly completed. It sat dormant for a few years then VW got the tax break they wanted from the state of PA and the mighty Rabbits were build there until VW called it quits on that site. Then after the plant sat dormant again for a few years Sony moved in and are still there.
My son had a connection of sorts with that site. While it was dormant between VW and Sony they had rally races in the huge parking lot on weekends. My son said he raced the 92' Gran Prix that whacked the deer about a dozen times there. Once when when we came back for a visit, while living in S. C., he dragged me and Mrs jmonroe to watch. In my opinion that's where he killed that car. In 97' when we moved back from S.C. it was 2 months away from total death with a bad engine and tranny. He learned you don't use your only car for that kind of stuff. Live and learn.

Oh, that old tale again. It has 7K miles on it so it is a used car. Never titled doesn’t mean squat as far as I’m concerned but the 7K miles do..
Based on edmunds TMV and the available incentives, this does not look like that great a deal, or is it? And, what would be a good price.
See, that ought to tell you something. A good price is what research in your area says the same 7K mile car, comparably equipped, is worth.
Fianlly, since its the end of the month, and with the current gas situation, how flexible would they be?
They’re probably going to be a lot more motivated at the end of the month.

Most CRT type TV's are gone and no one sits that close to them anyway. I will have to measure the field in my non-hybrid toyota.
Magnetic fields can cause health problems but a definite link to cancer has not been established as far I know.

Nope, the weather usually takes care of that. You should see the way people drive here at the beach. You'd swear you were in a foreign country.

Waved at BR and greenpea as I passed their general area. Must visit one day.
Speaking of BR, did that manual C70 show up?
There were close to 200 posts in here while I was gone. If you said anything important be sure to repeat it. Just my luck MAck probably wrapped up all his hanging stories....

Of course you are not !
You can't trust nobody nowadays
If the car hasn't been RDRd as a demo then it still has the full four years of its four year 50,000 mile warranty. You are only losing the first 7,000 miles of warranty. Sometimes on a demo you will even get a waiver on the demo miles so you get the full mileage warranty too. This isn't going to happen on a demo with 7,000 miles but might happen to one with 1,000 miles.
:confuse:

No, stickguy, no! I have driven the TSX manumatic.... :P 6-speed or nuthin'!
I do admit my Volvo AT was (cough, cough) bearable.
But you can still fight the good fight. DH and I drive 110 RT every day (half in traffic) with a TSX MT and an Element MT. Please say it ain't so!
P.S. We used to drive an F-250 Crew Cab diesel 4x4 MT to work....now that will make you appreciate an AT.
Thanks JM I needed a good laugh today :P

My sister lives in Colorado and one time her and her hubby were driving on a road that runs through a canyon. Well as [bad] luck would have it a herd of elk jumped onto the road, one landing on top of their car and a couple right in front. Needless to say their car got totaled, sister had minor injuries, hubby had more serious ones to the arms and hands and 3 elk were killed. My sister tells me that before they took them away to the hospital all three dead elk were gone. Seems like several of the people that stopped to help my sister and her hubby also helped themselves to free elk.

Richard

Is that the same plant that the infamous Westmoreland Vw Rabbits ?
DId the price include a CPO warranty?
And like JMONROE said, call it what you want, it is a used car. And I don't care what invoice was, trade in or auction buy price, it is worth what the market says it is worth.
