not trying to provoke anything other than a response to my question. i realize my trade-in is worth less than the payoff by about 2 - 3k. i was asking about the bottom line price for the new car that i would be bargaining up from. i realize i am not going to get the best deal since im throwing a trade in to the deal that is also an suv. but i wanted to know the starting point. i was not asking if this is the smart thing to do or the best financial deal. i have already taken a look at my situation, researched my options and made the decision to buy this durango based on my needs and wants. all i wanted to know was the answer to my original question. i got some good responses that answered my question factually. my point is there is no need to try to make a poster sound like an idiot in order to pump up ones own deflated ego.

    Agreed.

Hopefully you haven't been so insulted that you won't post the end result and what you finally end up with.

I might have missed your original post on buying the Durango and so I don't know if you already have a discount off the MSRP in the works.

However, if you'd be interested in a Friends discount price on the Durango send me a PM and we'll talk about it further.

I was just reading up about a fixed price dealership in my area. The jist of it is they display the MSRP on the window sticker and then a "No-Haggle, Best Price" next to it. They offer one price for the customer's trade-in and they either take it or leave it.

Do any of you guys work at a dealership like this? I'd be interested to know how well it has worked and the sales person's perspective on it. I've always believed in buying and selling cars for what their worth and not asking for sticker plus a $999 value package on a Tundra in 2008.

I guess it works for some customer because they don't like to negotiate and it takes the pressure off them because they know they could not have done any better on price. But I find many customers who like to know they are getting a good deal and enjoy grinding a bit.

    Flem,

What really happened is you came asking whether or not a particular deal was good and you got some of the answers with reasons that were beyond the purely pricing matters. Most of regular posters here would undestand a "good deal" not only as Price A minus Trade B plus Financing C, but also as a right choice at right time within right financial mean of the person. A lot of times best deal is actually to stay home and from initial bits and pieces some of us (me including) got the feeling that NOT buying was exactly the best choice here when purely financial terms were concerned. However, you are right, it is not our (my) place to judge soundness of your overall financial life and choices. I am trully sorry if this unsolicited advice offended or hurt you because it was not the intention of it at all.

But ultimately you are right, who are we to decide what's good for you.

i love the way people on this forum judge everybody so harshly when we are just looking for help. guess this was the wrong place to go.

You are in the right place, my friend.
Just don't expect everybody in here to be as pampering as some of us here. I am certainly not one of them pampering kind. That said, all that was said, was & has been for your benefit, and any others who are in similar situations.

take care, and hope the journey for your purchase goes well. :shades:

I have no idea what kind of a Land Rover this was but we just got a "buy bid" of 18,000 from our local LR dealer on a trade in.

It had a book of 30,000.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
I'm sure you didn't like my response and I know I'm guilty of stating things like I see them rather than sugar coating my responses.

You have a car that you want to get rid of that few people will want. You will get offers of thousands of dollars less than what the books say. The situation continues to worsen. If you are having mechanical problems then it's probably a high mile car that will make it ever harder to get rid of. What you owe on it has nothing to do with it's value.

The good news...you want a car that is even in less demand than the one you are wanting to get rid of. So, you are in a Buyer's Market as well as a Seller's Market.

I do wish you well. Just try not to jump from the frying pan into the fire.

A lot of people her are very sincere with their responses and it has nothing to do with their ego.

Two or three weeks ago there was a poster asking about the trade value of his '06 Durango over on the Real-World Trade-In Values thread. It sounded like it was loaded and didn't have high miles IIRC. The response was that it was worth 12K. That's what - like one-third of original sticker?

Hmmm - I wonder if that's a record percentage of depreciation for a two year old vehicle.

"My god Mack, stop listening to the liberal media. If the rest of the world hates us so much, why are they risking their lives to walk, run and swim here?"

I don't listen to the media, liberal or otherwise. I've experienced it myself in Germany and Italy. My kids also experienced it in those two countries and also Denmark, Holland, and France. Spain was not bad (I guess because they are of Hispanic descent?).

In Germany they would not let them in because they thought the babe magnet was a muslim! In Italy I was asked by a man if I was an American. "Yes. Why do you ask." and he said. "be careful around here. They don't like Americans much." I thought I could mix in with the local population but apparently my Levi jeans gave me away. LOL

Anyway, tomorrow is the end of the month for Toyota and I have a heck of a story. This one may be a 10 part. Lots of drama, suspense, and events that will bring tears to your eyes. Stay tuned.

Leasing is not rocket science. It's rather simple actually. I've explained it to a six year old and he had no problem understanding.
Do you like pizza? I use this example and don't have trouble with customers not knowing what they are getting into.

To begin with, I ask them if they like pizza, (who doesn't) so then I break out my handy pizza chart. I have a pie cut into 10 pieces. The whole pie is $20 bucks, or you can get a slice for $2 bucks you don't have to buy the whole pizza. So let's say you only want 2 slices. You pay $4 bucks and there are 8 slices left or $16 bucks, this is your residual. Your two slices are your first payment, taxes, title and registration. If you decide you want another slice then you pay another two bucks. This would be your excess milelage at the end of the lease or wear and tear. So after you finish your two slices of pizza you decide you want to take the rest of it home. This would be like buying the car after the lease. You can sell your pizza to the guy behind you for what you owe or if the pizza is really hot (market) you can ask more and pay the $16 bucks and pocket the rest. Just like with the car. At the end of the lease you can sell the car if it's worth more than the residual or you can sell it for more than the residual. Pay it off and use the difference for whatever you want (a slice of cheesecake!) or down payment on a new lease.

You might want to do this every three years and you never have to worry about maintenance costs as everything is covered under warranty for the duration of the lease.
Pizza you'll do it more often, hopefully once or twice a month but you get the picture. Any questions?

Tomorrow I will go over shaving your dog's butt and walking him/her backwards.

The bottom of the page on that ad says it's a lease. Besides, that's the first time I ever heard of a dealer charging for a test drive

I'll bet that's next, as dealers look to squeeze a few dollars out of the lookie-loos.

Tell you what - if they let me have it for an hour or two, drive 50-100 miles around town alone without guy breathing on my neck and telling me turn right four times, I may actually pay it, as long as the rental was reasonable. Say $20 for couple of hours (times say two-three considered cars) is better than thousands spent on something that ends up being wrong choice.

Oh well, that explains it. In Europe everybody hates everybody. The Germans hate the French, the Dutch hate the English, the Italians hate the Danes and the French hate everybody. Just because they got together and formed the EU doesn't mean they still aren't fighting those old feuds. You just got thrown into the mix.

I think most of them are jealous of us. From what I understand Levi jeans are highly desired by most Europeans. In fact that is the first thing they buy when visiting this country. I bet if you had offered to sell yours, they would have been your best friends. ;)

European countries average around $4.00 per gal in taxes. Total taxes per gal in the U.S. is around 40 cents. This was as of 2006 so it may have changed a little.

Germany ... 1.37 Euro per litre (approximately USD $7.615 per gallon) for unleaded petrol (Sep 2007).

Netherlands ...The 2007 fuel tax was € 0,684 per litre or $ 3,5 per gallon

United Kingdom ... this would put the combined tax at 69.53p/litre, or approximately USD$5.20 per US gallon.

    From Wiki gas tax

Comparing these to $.50 gallon US, it says what I've said all along about those saying how grateful we should be with $5 per US gallon gasoline because in other countries they pay more. BUT those prices are including high sales taxes.

Looking at purchasing a Hyundai Veracruz Limited 2007 FWD. Its a dealer / factory car with 7,500 miles. MSRP was $35,600. The sticker is $31,000 and I got it down to $26,250. Full five / ten year warranty is included. They are also including a DVD player (after market) and blue tooth (factory) in the $26,250. It is being sold as a new car since its never been titled.

Just looking to get some feedback if others think this is a good deal or not.

Yes, same point I was trying to make. Thanks for the update. Those Europeans pay a high price for that "free" health care.

In the U.S. we pay a fixed amount per gal in taxes that does not change as the price of gas increases. I imagine in Europe they pay a percentage so the tax increases as the price of gas goes up.

When the price of gas started to escalate here the dems made a couple of runs to switch over to a percentage basis but were beaten back.

No wonder the rest of the world hate us.

How soon they forget. If it weren’t for us they’d be somebody else today, especially the French. If it weren’t for us and a few friends (at the time and we all know how that changed) they wouldn’t even have been a country that was occupied during World War II, they would have been long gone. Then our high school students wouldn’t have had French as a foreign language choice. Talk about a country of ungrateful b------. If there is anyone that should follow us over a cliff it’s them.

We are not entitled to lower gas prices because we are Americans.

The hell we aren’t. It was our technology that got that black gold out of the ground to begin with long ago. The owners of those camels wouldn’t have known what to do with that stuff if their camels slid to the bottom of a sandune on it if we didn’t show them its worth. If you’re wondering how long that debt should be paid, I say FOREVER or until we call off the dogs.

Far too many Americans have given their lives so that we now have what they paid for; so to give it away so “they” will LIKE us is a bunch of crap.

I guess you can say this subject hit my sweet spot and when I hear this kind of talk I’ll jump over the ropes into the ring.

I was 5 years old when this was composed. Our family car was a 1938 Chevy coupe.
The Kingston Trio did it on their Hungry I album about 1959 or 1960. The coupe was still the family car. I’m trying to stay on topic.

    Hi all,
If I give my dealer my credit card info to hold a car until we finalize a deal, what is the law regarding refunds? I was given a price on a specific car and was asked to give a $100 deposit to "hold the price" with no payment contract agreed to yet. This is in Illinois if that matters. I have not even been to this dealer in person yet.

Chances are, I will get this van but just in case the interest rate i get is too high or anything unexpected comes up, I just want to know my position.
The deal is a pretty good one but I can not get in the store for another day so I actually did this already. I am feeling a little dumb...

Yeah, it's just $100 but still..
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
Oh, I doubt if they would fight you over this. That would be pretty dumb on their part.

Please do them a favor, however. Don't give them a deposit unless you are 99.9% committed to buy the car.

And, if you don't like the interest rate they quote you, you can always go to your own lender.

"...If I give my dealer my credit card info..."

If the deal goes sour just have your credit card company dispute the bill. They are trying to make you feel obligated to complete the purchase. A standard practice, but mostly harmless compared to some of the nonsense I've read about.

For those who are curious -- I checked with the church, and they sold the crib at the big church yard sale for $75 in the first hour of the yard sale. So my price was decent, and I am glad I didn't sell it to the grinder for $15. The $75 goes towards a youth trip to Italy, and I still get my write off.
