my bil had some brake problems with his previously owned moutaineer he just bought. we went to rd sawyer flm in manteo nc and they took care of him in a about a couple of hours.
they have a gt500 on the showroom floor (only 1 vehicle could fit) and were nice enough to unlock it and open the hood, so we could check it out.
btw they fixed up by bil's moutaineer and took hm out for a drive to prove it.
    i love those family dealerships.

Reminds me of when i had Italian and german buyers paying 100k over on vipers back in 92 thru 94

If another one calls you tell them that you know of someone in the St. Louis area who might be persuaded to let his go for that much...and it's newer than a 94.

Heck, I'll even drive it to the east coast if they want it loaded on the boat. :)

do you know where i can get a deal on a auto factory?

I hear they'll be running a sale sometime after October 31 in the St. Louis area. See if they'll give you the employee discount. ;)

BTW, where did you read that the reason the St. Louis minivan plant was shutting down was because they made the slow selling short wheelbase? There hasn't been a short wheelbase minivan made there since the last model change around a year ago.

The St. Louis assembly plant is also the only plant making the diesel and right hand drive export models. Windsor had better start retooling.

Statements from Merrill Lynch auto analyst John Murphy along with "helpful comments from Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson regarding the housing industry that the " worst is yet to come" Add $1 per bbl and voila', the Dow hits a new low.

Merrill Lynch analyst John Murphy said GM needed to raise up to $15 billion in new capital to get through 2008 and 2009. The company insisted it had enough to cash to get through 2008 and could sell assets and make other moves in 2009.

GM closed down 15.1% to $9.98. Shares of all automakers plus automobile parts makers and tire makers also fell.

Bankruptcy is "not impossible" if the U.S. auto market continues to slump, Murphy wrote. A GM bankruptcy would put all labor contracts at risk and take years to resolve and could cause problems for thousands of suppliers.

Thanks, jkinzel, just having fun before beddy bye. Jipster, you'll notice I did support the team, Pax, mi hermano. Btw. still here. You too, moo. That was alot of fun typing . My convoluted theory, AMC went out of of business due to their poor marketing. Such mean names, they were destined to failure. Seriously, could you own a Hornet and complain if there were problems ? What adjective do we associate wirh Hornet? And if you owned a Gremlin, who was to blame you or them if you had problems ? You bought it. The Pacer, or spacer can't really make fun of the name but it was max-ugly.

Yes....Joe Walsh was ONE of the members, but the band was James Gang.....Funk #49.

Double Jeopardy for $1,000 Alex.....the original "All Along the Watchtower" was penned by Bob Dylan.

Onto the dealerships......when I was helping my friend buy her Accord, and asking the sales person about his car sales career, he had his available hours (weekly work schedule) printed on his card. I inquired about some of the "older" feller's wandering around the showroom floor. There were two of them.

I asked if the were just "part time". He said they may as well be. Maybe Craig can shed some light on this. The sales person said that they work mostly days, some, but only a few Saturdays....no Sundays....rarely any nights unless they absolutely have to make an evening delivery. They take no "ups" and mostly work by appointment only. Their tenure is ranked in the years, not months.

I questioned their productivity. The sales person said they consistently rank among the sales leaders every month.

Would that be because they've been around so long they know most of the customers? Or, are they really that good that they don't have to work the prime selling hours of evenings and weekends?

consumer clinics pushed the styling towards a truck look because the consumer clinic voted that it looked safer :confuse:

same with the plastic inside, the clinic results favored a easy to clean surface. ;)
  • graphicguygraphicguy Member Posts: 14,123
Maybe that's part of the problem....the statistical analysis gleaned from consumer input is usually a small sample size. They always depend on asking the right questions. I would imagine if you asked the consumer the question "would you want a minivan that's easy to clean?", the obvious answer is "yes".

The more pertinent question would be "would you buy a minivan that's easy to clean, but is made of material that's closely related to the materials you'd find in a "leggo" kit, would you buy it"?

The answer would probably be "No".

Looking at the stats, truck, minivan and SUV sales are down 20%-30% across the board. Dealers can't get enough 4 cyl cars. Hybrids now have waiting lists.

Took my Tahoe in for an oil change to my dealer yesterday. While I was waiting, I saw someone taking delivery of a Hybrid Tahoe. Sticker was north of $50K. Don't know what the guy paid for it, but I'd guess they got him for the full boat.

Dealer said he'd sell Hybrid Tahoes all day, every day, if GM would ramp up more production.

So, that means the desire for big vehicles hasn't subsided.....if they got decent fuel economy. I think the sticker said this Tahoe gets 20-21 MPG....same as you'd get with a 4 cyl Camry, or there about.

Mine (flex fuel) gets around 15-16 MPG in mixed driving. I'll get close to 19 MPG on the highway. From that perspective, it ain't that bad. To get those numbers, I have to set the cruise control to 60-65 MPH. In town, I coast a lot (to shut down cylinders). Very irritating. But, plant the "go peddle" to merge onto the highway, and MPG drops like a rock. The biggest culprit is stopping and idling for long periods of time.

My "3-er" gets good MPG....about 21MPG mixed. But, that's on the required premium juice. It costs the same (maybe a little more ) to fill up the BMW as it does the Tahoe.

You want to become more fuel efficient? Have each community abolish 10%-15% of the stop signs and red lights. Over the years, all these communities put up stop signs, red lights just about at every intersection. Why? For good or ill, there was a point in time where there were more people walking and traffic needed to be controlled to keep from making them road kill. Today, I'd say foot traffic has dropped 50% from where it was 10-20 years ago. Bottom line, we don't need nearly as many stop signs and traffic signals. Do that, and I'd bet every vehicle on the road would get 1-2 MPG better.

Crank up production of Tahoe/Yukon Hybrids and they'd sell like hotcakes.

Mack....I would imagine that those Highlinder hybrids are tough to keep in stock, too?

I know this is all very politically incorrect. Given some of the politicos and special interest groups choices, we'd all be riding around on Segways. It's "chic" to drive a Prius in CA. The vast majority of the rest of the country doesn't quite see it that way, though.

    People want what they want.

Answer to the first song lyric....."Carry On" by CSN&Y.

I have not really studied the hybrids that much, but from what I have been told the benefit is mostly in stop and go or city type driving. When you get to running 70-75 down the highway it seems you are running on the gas engine anyway with NO hybrid benefit. If that is correct, then lots of folks will be wasting the cash they paid for the hybrid part of the vehicle. I think the panic and misinformation/misunderstanding have dropped the public IQ about as fast as gas prices have been going up.

Some of you may recall that I bought my Mazdaspeed3 from a dealer in Cincinnati due to the assinine sales practices($3K ADM, no test drives w/o a signed buyers order, etc.) of the Louisville dealer Oxmoor Mazda. Well, yesterday I thought that I'd give Oxmoor's parts department a shot at my business. I'm instructing at a HPDE in a few days and I wanted a spare set of front brake pads. The parts guy comes back with a quoted price that is $57 over MSRP and @$100 over the internet price offered by a couple of online Mazda dealers.

Their idea of "market" is two suckers a year coming and buying at their idiotic price - thus confirming it's a "market price". For them it's impossible to even think you may actually sell more units at lower price. What for? From their point of view you can do nothing whole year then a sucker comes around, you score once and then you go back to vacation.

of the Louisville dealer Oxmoor Mazda. Well, yesterday I thought that I'd give Oxmoor's parts department a shot at my business

I called that dealership about a month ago for a quote on a new ignition coil when I had one go bad. They were about $10 higher ($90) than the other dealership I called. But, they were going to charge me about $95 in labor to change out two additional coils that I was thinking of changing out while the intake was pulled off.
The coils pull right out... might take a minute per coil. The other dealership wasn't going to charge me anything in labor for the two extra coils.

edited: One time I had an oil change and the service receipt stated they put in 10w-30 oil, when the manual calls for 5w-20. When I called asking why they didn't put in the recommended type oil, the service writer replied that there was some type of glitch in their computer system, and they put the correct oil in. Either one are okay to use, but I don't want the heavier oil in during cold winter months.
I go to the Oxmoor Mazda dealership for their $19 oil changes, transmission and coolant flushes. They run those services on special sale prices that are hard to beat.

Is always fun... Like most here, I'm sure the lyrics presented are instantly recognizable and pop into your mind's eye. Sometimes just hooking them up with the melody takes some thinkin'...

The Procol Harum lyrics almost instantly translated into music in my head, as did the Petty song and Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower." Jimi's version, of course. What an intro...

And, topic-time, I really enjoy this forum: the denizens, the stories, the slightly off-topic non-offensive banter. Reading stories/thoughts from Mack/BR/ISell/GP from Bawstn/the psychotic deskman et al will stick in my mind as I buy my next car. I won't feel quite so bad as I'm getting clubbed.

Do I still want to sell cars as my next career? Don't know, people are so annoying!
