Free at last, lawdalmighty we're. Thx T. Now on to auto discussion. Persused the classifieds today and saw 28 ! 2007 Lincoln Towncar Signatures all dealer ads with the stock numbers, and prices ranging between $19,990 and $23,000 , Decked out with low mileage. People are getting pretty crazy. A 50% haircut so they don't have grimace when they fill up.

A pet store shop owner puts an African Grey outside his shop and one day a rather unattractive woman walks up and the parrot says. Lady , you are the ugliest woman I've ever seen in my life. She immediately goes into complain to the owner who then threatens the parrot with death if he commits the infraction again. The next day the same woman walks up to the parrot outside the shop and arching her eyebrow says " well "? . He winks and says, you know....

We'll not be committing any egregious infractions. Just the inegregious ones.

Huh?? what does egregious and inegregious mean? :confuse:

Thanks for opening this thread Tidester. I was going through withdrawal this weekend. Nothing much happened in the world of car sales. Everyone was busy getting their fireworks ready. Had two customers on Saturday, one a referral the other a couple looking for their son. We'll see what happens.

Absolutely. She had to make a large monetary donation to "Team Tidester" to get the discussion reopened this soon. But, she said it was money well spent. :shades:

Yeah, there was a "mine is bigger than yours" banter between dskman and I. It began to get heated when the insults started flying around irt Honda, Toyota, etc..
The thread was shut down for the weekend.

would be that Chrysler is fine. That would be news, fortunately, most people know that that's not the case.

I’m not going to argue with this but I doubt our government will allow Chrysler to kill themselves without helping them at least one more time. The building of cars industry in the USA can’t be allowed to be destroyed.

We have spent gobs more money with little or no benefit (think Iraq War). So, we can afford another bail out if necessary.

How's this for a weekend. I left for a sweet 4 day jaunt away from office/home. When I return, I see that I've sold 2 of the 3 vehicles on Saturday. Oh yes, what a nice way to start the month. ;)

    GM in decent shape
GM is in the worst shape of all 3 right now. They think they have enough money to last the year then they don't know what they are going to do.

At next months board meeting they are going to lay off 1000's of white collar workers and possibly decide to sell/cut Saturn, Buick, Hummer, and SAAB.

BTW Hummer is already for sale

Second time I've seen it this weekend, actually.

I'm just a lurker here, but I'm a huge poster on a fansite for The Price is Right...and they actually shut down their forums over the weekend for some pretty devastating news.

Seems Fremantle Media has fired the producer of The Price is Right (who'd been there since 1972!) so they can take the show in, and I quote, "a new direction". Tell me, can there POSSIBLY be any good that comes from that?

(They shut down the forum because the admins actually had a pretty good relationship with said producer, who had been quite generous supplying the site with backstage access/photos.)

To bring this back on topic...boy, The Price is Right sure gives away a lot of cars, don't they? They've even started giving away Hondas again a couple months ago!
  • joel0622joel0622 Member Posts: 3,299

Theres the problem. Quit with the Honda's and it will all be fine.

Drew Carrey is not a very good host, he almost seems bored with it.

Was this over the W2 argument?

Does it really matter? If I showed you a W-2 that said I made 1.5643 M last year would you believe me? I can show you one but it isn’t worth the paper/email time to do it.

The most chest pounding argument with no teeth there is. Now, if I were the IRS and you showed me one that would be saying something.

Topic thing: Just because you drive a MB doesn’t mean you can afford it without denying yourself and/or your family what they need.

Doesn't happen too often but had one like this about 3 months ago (before we had Challenger pricing):

Custy walks in and has no time to sit down or look at anything and its five minutes before closing time. He says:

I want to buy a Challenger, and my father wants a Wrangler (father was not with him). What can you offer at what prices?

Ok, let's do one thing at a time I told him. Challenger will be out in a few months, and I don't have pricing yet. If you like I can call you when I get more details, or if you really must have one when they come out you can put a refundable deposit on one and go from there.
He says, "no if your price will be too much I will get one from the US." I tell him all preorders in the US are spoken for, as far as I know.
So he says he won't put any money down unless he drives one, and asks me to let him know when the first one arrives so he can take it for a good test drive.

I tell him that the first one that arrives will most likley be sold to someone that put a deposit on it. If he must test drive one, he''ll have to wait for an 09 to arrive late in the year.

Not too happy, he says he'll just buy one in the US. I said ok, let's move on to the Wrangler for your father.

What information can I provide you with about a Wrangler that your father wants?

"Well, I want to know what's your best deal is on one, I'm gonna give him some pricing and if your price is good then I'll send him your way.

So I ask him: What model, and options does your father want in his Wrangler?

He says he doesn't know and just asks for a quote from me.

I explain to him that there are hundreds of combinations one can get on a Wrangler. Does he want the 2 door, 4 door, auto, or stick, soft top, hard top, or both? Does he want a base, Sahara or a Rubicon? Will he be offroading? Does he need a towing package? Does he want the MyGig Navi? Does he need a power group, or a/c?

I tell him, why don't you give me his number so I can call him and find out exactly what he needs so I can help him better.

Customer gets frustrated, and asks why I just can't give him a quote. I tell him what they start at and what they top out at, but as for a quote I need more specific info as to what he wants, otherwise I can spend 8 hours printing a whole book with the endless option combinations.

Then he tells me that his father is also looking at a Ford truck, so he's not sure what he wants.

Now 'm thinking ok, what's the whole point of going through this excercise, if he has no clue as to what his father wants in the first place.

So I ask him for his own number, and that I'll let him know about the Challengers. I give him my card and a Wrangler borchure, and tell him to get his father to call me as we can beat any price quote he'll receive.

After a few weeks I don't hear anything from the dude, so I call him and turns out he gave me a wrong number. :confuse:

Sometimes I don't understand people. I'm willing to give them whatever info they need, but they need to help me as well.

"Help me help you I say!" ;)

No, but a good sense of humor helps! All of my guys are good boys that are just a bit "enthusiastic" sometimes in their off hours pursuits. I am sure deskman would appreciate the "personalities" that we have.
  • sterlingdogsterlingdog Member Posts: 6,984
Mack, I hardly think that the thread was shut down because of you and deskman. I would imagine that the Hosts needed a well deserved holiday break. They certainly didn't shut the thread down a few months ago when I had it out with a certain poster. Tidester simply sent me a very professional personal email. I promised myself that I would never let someone get to me like that again. It's just not worth it. No poster is so elite that he or she merits a shut down. The Hosts can simply put you out of business by deleting your posts.

BTW, thanks for serving as Spelling Director in my absence. ;)

Deskman is incorrect about one thing. Though this site is primarily for salesmen, consumers have been welcomed here. Our participation has given the thread a kind of balance---done in a friendly and humorous way. I would hope that this arrangement would continue.

To stay on topic: We decided to travel beyond West Palm Beach. We went on to Key Largo and Key West. We enjoyed Jimmy Buffett's, Sloppy Joe's, Fast Buck Freddie's, Hemingway's home, the Little White House, etc. I drove the Explorer 2,100 miles and spent $372.50 on gas. I averaged 19 mpg. The trip was well worth the money spent. The Explorer didn't have one problem. It was all of that good maintenance that Joel recommended to me months ago. I hope that all of you had a good 4th of July. :)

Heck, it seemed to be heading in a new direction ever since Bob Barker retired. That's how it appeared to me anyway.

I had a half serious plan for several years to PEDAL to the show. I figured if I wore a T-shirt that said something like I PEDALED 2,100 MILES FROM ST. LOUIS TO SEE THE PRICE IS RIGHT they might select me as a contestant. I'd planned on taking 10 days to do the ride. Bob retired before I worked out the details and I lost interest after that.

One thing that I always noticed on the show is that I never saw them have any import vehicles listed as prizes. I didn't watch every show, so there may have been a few episodes where they slipped one in.

Since we've got a number of discussions in which consumers can share their shopping stories, this topic is specifically for salespeople to share their stories, good and bad.

Consumers are welcome to read and ask questions, but no "bashing," please! If you disagree with the salesperson's perspective, that's the breaks

Wow.... good stuff. So if consumers here disagree with a story they have to keep quiet.... :surprise:

Before I ever came here that was how this forum was described to me. Anyway most of the stuff here is just like the front lines.... :shades:

The day I get offended by something said on a web site is the day I throw my computer in the Cumberland River. I think allot of people here really, really, really, read in to way to much of what is said. It is all harmless banter back and forth.

For the most part (other then Isell, his store sounds tamer then a convent) if all of the guys her in the biz were to talk and act like what it is really like behind the scenes at a dealership we would all be banned for cussing I think what you all really see here is a tamed down version of us.

Yes, it pretty much is harmless banter and you know what? I think plenty of people have been "converted" from the "all car salesmen are slimy rip-off artists" by the way you guys tell stories in here, and through the advice that you've provided. So yeah, you are going to take heat from time to time, but you've also upped the "salesperson" image, and helped people go into a car buying experience with a less hostile, confrontational attitude.

Ahh... listen I have to correct you guys... and I hate to do it but, consumers really don't club sales people like a baby seal. If someone gets a great deal or if you beat up a sales person to get a great low price... thats all you did. You got a great price.

Now I understand  ...... everyone wants to beat up on the salesman.

The phrase club them like a baby seal is only used properly when someone (salesperson) sells a customer over sticker (ussualy by stealing the trade) and than they buy everything in F&I....

But in the end you say potato... I say potata...... or what ever way that saying goes.

Anyway you have to love July. I have worked 4 days this month and I am selling my 5th car. My goal is to hit 25!!!

Have a great month everyone and that goes for you retired folk out there also.

They still use domestics only on the show. They just slightly changed their definition of 'domestic'. They're very careful to mention that every Honda they've given away lately is from Honda of America and built in Ohio.

They also quit giving away Chevy Aveos, presumably because they're built in Korea for the most part.

Going slightly closer to on-topic...I can't help but laugh every time I drive to/from work with these gas prices. Seems most of the stations in Rockford are selling gas for $4.27 today, but the ones I go past in South Beloit are $3.99. And it's not a gradual shift between the two either...at one spot halfway between, there's a station selling for $3.99 and the next one down, a mile away, is $4.27.

Yeah, I haven't bought any gas in Rockford lately.

You are correct. We have our own terminology. We say, "I harpooned the giant whale." This means that we stole the car from them at under invoice, got retail for the trade, and purchased nothing in F&I. ;) You are just too young to be messing with us retired folks. :P

    "I harpooned the giant whale."

I would except that from a consumer...

You just reminded me of all the people who read the book " How to beat the dealer "
and I am taalking about the dealerships in this case not Vegas...

You can always tell who read it... or read it on line because they will say they are just paying cash... car is for someone else... my favorite " I am not trading" than after 2 hours of negotiating... "well what will you give for me my trade"

    Have a great day everyone.

I read somewhere that's call "zone pricing" by the big oil companies. They take a look at the demographics of a certain "zone" and charge the dealer according to the relative wealth of the area.

So if you have a rather affluent area next to a poor one you will see a big difference between the two.

Imagine if car dealers did that. Thank goodness they only charge you based on how expensive your shoes are. ;)

When they do that to you then it's time to "steal" the trade. They will either take it out of the deal or go for it. ;)

p.s. "Clubbed them like a baby seal" I should copyright that saying.
I've never sold a car for over MSRP. Sold plenty of them at MSRP, with an "enviromental protection package" also known as "rust and dust", "extended warranties" or as the F$I guys like to say; "Vehicle Service Agreements." image

Could very well be different jurisdictions with different tax rates. I used to live in Cook County but very close to Du Page County where taxes were about 2% different. I used to cross the county line all the time to get gas at 5 cents or more less. Now I think gas is like 20 cents or more more expensive in cook county than many of the surrounding counties simply because of the tax rates.
