I read somewhere that's call "zone pricing" by the big oil companies. They take a look at the demographics of a certain "zone" and charge the dealer according to the relative wealth of the area.

The only problem is that the prices go up in my metro area when I get closer to the ghettos. Wonder why???

You can't just look at the economy in general to get an accurate picture of auto sales. The market is down but my buddy is the GSM of an import store where volume us up 12% year over year. He took the place over 3 years ago and is up 50% from then.

Could very well be different jurisdictions with different tax rates.

I think that's it rather than "zone pricing" by the big oil companies. I used to live in Stamford, CT. It had REALLY expensive gas. Next town over is Greenwich, CT. It's A LOT more affluent than Stamford yet had cheaper gas.

So is anyone responding to that free gas marketing ? $2.99 for x years, free gas for the rest of the summer? Curious

Dishonest customers are such a pia. You start out with an attitude of I trust you, you trust me and then the bond is broken with a oh btw.Yeah it does affect the bottom line. If the trade in is important, say so. If you really don't know what you want , say so.If you're a kid shopping for your father and you don't have a clue what you want much less your old man.Go away, far far away.

So as sure as the sun will shine
I'm gonna get my share now what is mine
And then the harder they come

Plzsner Urquell, brewed in Plzsen CZ, hmm Pilsner? Maybe in 500 years they got it right? Despite the Dutch raiding eastern europe in the 15th century and stealing all their vowels resulting in them having 4 breath intersections leaving poor eastern europe to have to spell richard, rchrd. They do know how (cz) to brew a beer.

Don't know that anyone can make any statement that business is up with the cars.

Taking a survey of the ads in the newspaper tells me it's super slow.

That, in and of itself, tells me traffic in dealerships must be down.

More telling, when I was helping my friend look at vehicles, the local Toyota dealership was offering discounts on Highlander Hybrids. In fariness, they were getting MSRP on Camry hybrids and Prius'.

The horizon will eventually change. Will it be quick enough to save brands? Will it be quick enough to save some of the smaller dealerships?

    Who knows?

deskman....I know you have to promo your wares, but I'm skeptical that Chryco has any firm footing, regardless of what they may, or may not, have coming down the pike. Their problems are the immediate future. Not next model year.

GM has a few "hits" on their hand....the Malibu, CTS, to name two. Buick seems hopelessly lost, still. Pontiac has the new G8, and the new Vibe. But, what else?

Ford....same deal. Who would have thought the Focus would gain traction again, for example? But, it has.

Chrysler? Is Jeep selling anything, at all? Dodge has the Challenger. But, even that car could be a dead cat bounce.

It's a simple case of some manufacturers having the wrong product mix, at the wrong time. It could take years for them to reverse the trend with new products fit for the times.

There's another crisis looming, too. What's GM, Ford and Chryco going to do with all those big iron lease deals coming off lease? They certainly aren't going to be worth anything remotely what their buyouts say they are.

Personally, I ususally trade every 3 years. On my Tahoe, that won't be financially attractive, at all. I may as well drive it until the wheels fall off. Good vehicle. Very well made. But, at two years old, it's worth exactly 1/3 (if that) of what it stickered for right now.

I wish that I could take credit for the good memory. I was reading the posts that I missed while we were in Florida. I ran across the name of the guy. Like you, I forget the stories after a day or two.

I'm not as concerned with my memory as I am with my cognitive processes. It seems here lately that I can't seem to understand some of the posters---like Deskman and Duke and a couple of others. I'm not being critical of them; it's me. I think that I'm not keeping up with the 21st Century language patterns. I purchased new cell phones yesterday, and I couldn't follow the lingo of the saleslady. These phones have cameras, surf the internet, calculate math problems, text message, play music, have speaker systems, etc. My head was spinning by the time I left the store. I'm trying to read the manual to learn how to use them. Old age is hell. The person who coined the term "Golden Age" must have been 20 years old.

To stay on topic: I'm afraid that my next car will be so technically advanced that I won't be able to drive the damn thing.

I think the word gp was trying for was EXPECT.

I unintentionally clubbed a dealer like a baby seal last year. They had one of those events where they set out to sell 25 cars in a day (about twice what they normally sell in a month) and I was in the market for a car. Made a very satisfactory deal on the new car and traded in our van for ALL the money. That was last September, delivery took place in mid December by which time the value of the van had fallen considerably. Worse was to come for the dealer because for some reason it didn't sell and gas prices rose sharply to the extent that they were offering 'our' van for sale at thousands less that they paid us and in the end (last month) it went to auction.

"I'm afraid that my next car will be so technically advanced that I won't be able to drive the damn thing."

Excellent point. The car I bought a few months ago was certainly smarter than the person who delivered it to me. I later found in the pile of paper he handed me a ~15-item check list of things that were supposed to be set up at delivery -- things like getting the XM fully operational, memory seats, radio presets, bluetooth pairing, all kinds of stuff. The good news is that the owners manual is very comprehensive & clearly written; I was able to get it all done myself over a period of several weeks.

The even better news is that the actual driving part of the car is just the same as always, with a very sweet 6-speed manual.

    Keep the faith.

I bet that you are absolutely correct. Gp must have intended "expect". That would make better sense. See how important the English language is? :)

Congratulations on your great deal. You "harpooned the giant whale" at just the right time. ;)

I'm glad that you had a good owner's manual. With some time, I believe that I could learn the new gadgets on a car, but this new cell phone is driving me crazy. The manual isn't bad, but the illustration pictures are so small that I'm having to use a magnifying glass.

    Enjoy that new drive. :)

I never heard of JM&A and I’ve hung out here for a while.

    You are close JM...

It stands for Jim Moran & Associates...

They are the one that started SOuth East Toyota....

They also do FInance School for dealerships across the country. If some one from my dealer is going into F&I they have to go to JM&A school down in Florida...

Sometimes JM&A does classes around the states also. We had them come here about a year ago for some classes.

To touch on what the OP was talking about is sometimes JM&A will send out someone to work with the finance manager at the dealership. When they are here everyone is supposed to be on their best behavior.

96 Toyota cars have been found as having been assembled with engines left in a port for 2 years. The manufacturer now has to contact the clients who bought the cars to negotiate compensations for its error.

In early 2006, a container of engines for Innova and Hiace model cars left the manufacturing workshop in Indonesia for Hai Phong port, and arrived in the port 2-3 weeks later. The consignment of goods stayed at the port until February 2008 because Toyota forgot about it. It contained 89 engines for Innova and six for Hiace.

After discovering the consignment, Toyota Viet Nam asked Toyota Indonesia about the quality of the engines and was told that the engines had been left for too long, six times longer than the maximum recommended time (90 days), and should not be used.

Nevertheless, the engines were still used by Toyota to assemble cars.

An official of the Viet Nam Registration Agency said that the cars assembled with the expired engines could not meet standards for running. Assembling cars with such engines is not acceptable for such a big automobile manufacturer as Toyota.

On July 4 in the afternoon, Toyota Viet Nam officially admitted its mistake and blamed the mistake on the logistics division. 90 cars assembled with the engines have been sold since March 2008: four Hiace sold to individual clients and 86 Toyota Innova sold in lots.

Toyota has promised to give other cars to the buyers or refund 10% of the purchase price. Regarding the quality of the car, Toyota Viet Nam affirmed that the engines are still running well and that all cars sold meet Toyota’s standards.

Innova model was launched by Toyota Viet Nam in January 2006 and has become a best-seller. Some 30,000 Innovas have been consumed in the last 2.5 years, a record high for sales in Vietnam’s market.

    Old engines startle customs agencies

An official of the Hai Phong Customs Agency, when talking with a VNExpress reporter, said he could not understand how the engines could have been left for such a long time at the port.

“This is really an unusual story in the history of the automobile industry, especially as this happened with engines for the Innova, the best-seller in the recent past,” he said.

The official said that he does not have information about where the consignment was put. Customs agencies will check to find out what is behind the trouble and who must take responsibility for the mistake.

In principle, when a consignment docks at a port, the owner of the consignment must make a declaration about the imports before the imports are unloaded from the ship. If the owners of the consignment do not receive the imports, the port will notify the ship owner about the tardiness, so that the ship owner can urge the import companies to come to clear the imports. The ship owner is responsible for the commodities until the commodities are cleared.

After the commodities are unloaded from the ship, the consignment owners must register to the port to be able to take the commodity to a bonded warehouse, and make declarations.

No one can give a suitable explanation about why the engines were left for two years. No one can explain how Toyota, a company which applies a strict management procedure, could ‘forget’ the consignment of imports.

The director of a car import company in Hai Phong city guessed that Toyota might have forgotten the imported engines because there were too many imports. However, she said Toyota should not have forgotten for such a long time.

Japanese officials at Toyota Viet Nam joint venture were also surprised at the mistake because no subordinate reported to them about the engines. (VNE)

    Richard--

Someone from the forum needs to be elected to maintain notes on Mack's previous installments of the "to be continued..." sagas. Since you are already the forum grammarian these tasks need to be distributed equitably. I know that Mack has left at least a handful of stories hanging on the precipice. Those of us who grew up on a steady diet of TV cliff-hangers in the 60s and 70s need the denouement, the Act IV, the epilogue. Obviously he is submitting his themes without a conclusion--get on him, Richard!

Maybe Mack's the lone hold-out from the writers strike that was settled. Let's ask his boss to boost his pay through additional incentives so that he has more time to finish his stories from the sales frontlines. Either that or he needs help negotiating a screen play deal.

Anyone else dealing with the rusted frames of the Toyo Tacombas. I have had 3 people with this problem in the last week all waiting for good money on their trucks.

For instance this guy I had today had a 1998 toyo tacoma with 114k on it, roll up windows, 4x2... And he is getting a check for $10,500 next week because his truck won't pass inspection with the frame rusting :shades:

Funny to read this here. I was in Pgh visiting about 3 weeks ago, and a neighbor there had a brand new truck. We started talking about it, and come to find out he got that frame buyout offer from Toyota for his old Toyota truck. IIRC, he mentioned that they gave everyone the Excellent KBB tradein value, plus some other $$'s incentive to buy him out. He didn't get another Toyota only because they didn't make whatever model he wanted in manual stick version, so took the cash and bought elsewhere.

"...his truck won't pass inspection with the frame rusting..."

My 1986 Toyota pick-up rusted everywhere BUT the frame. However, once, when I went to the junk yard to scrounge some parts for it I saw a row of similar trucks which were all there because the frames had rotted out.

The engines were all in good shape though.
