They ran into a salesman. He described it as an "opportunity". A "Collector's piece with a story!" "You can't find another vehicle like this one!!!"

"You like saving money, right? RIGHT?!" "Take a look at this one of a kind beauty!! She can be yours for the low, low price of $3,995 + tax, tag, administration fee, registration, credit processing fee, gasoline fee and senior citizen discount fee."

    Enjoy!

BTW, Jip. Where exactly is Parts, Unknown. I hadn't heard of that.

Well... if I knew where Parts, Unknown was, I wouldn't need to be calling it "Parts, Unknown" now would I? ;)

    "...Mustang with a rebuilt title..."

What is a rebuilt title? I've heard of rebuilt engines, rebuilt trannies, even rebuilt brakes but never a rebuilt title. :confuse:

BTW, the guy who blew you off and didn't call is a dork. So is the woman who thought you would hold a car for her without a deposit or any comitment to buy.

Isn't jipster part of that "Team Jmonroe" I've been reading so much about?

Shirley you jest? Ain't never been a "Team Jmonroe"... unless you want to include snakeweasel who is a fellow Hyundai owner. "Team Jipster" is the awesome force you are thinking of. You were a member for one whole day until termination papers were served for betraying the teams manifesto.... you been drinking over chlorinated pool water again? :surprise:

I've found the tpye of customer you get is in direct correlation with the type of inventory you carry. That's not the case everytime, but for the most part.
But the fact is this day is almost over, and not a moment too soon. Tomorrow will be better...
Just out of curiosity... What is the lowest beacon score the salespeople in here have seen approved? I had a 522 approved last month, but the customer had 2K down and financed only about 4K on a car that booked for about $6500. Painted a decent picture to the bank I guess.

What's all this talk about not buying bottled water? During the last hurricane, I was happy to purchase bottled water. I could drink it, cook with it, and take a sponge bath with it. It beats the acid in soft drinks which eat out the lining of your stomach. Don't get me wrong. I love a cold Pepsi.

To stay on topic: As I was buying gas today, a guy drove up in an old Karmen Gia (sp.?). I commented on how nice it looked. He said that with the gas prices, he decided to pull it out of the barn and get a new battery, some tires, and a few belts. He said that it ran like a top. It had a new coat of paint---silver glaze. It looked like a real sports car.

Gotta go. I'm working for three weeks. The wife got her new granite counter tops and tile back splash. Now, I've got to put the money back in savings.

Aren't those things air cooled and illegal to drive since it can't pass emissions?

Question coming from someone that lives in a "non-emissions" state.
  • tidestertidester Member Posts: 10,059
Classic cars are exempted from EPA emissions requirements. Would the Ghia be regarded as classic since the last one was built over 30 years ago?

Not sure on that I would consider it more like junk than a classic. But that's just my opinion. Same with a Hyundai 30 years from now. ;)

    Per gg:
"duke....I'm rather enjoying having nothing to do, right now. That's the first time that's happened since I graduated from college (a long time ago). It can't go on forever. But, for right now, I'm doing things I've always wanted, but could never find the time for. Wednesday night I'm going to a concert. Ordinarily, I wouldn't do that because Thursday's a work day. I'm not worried about that kind of stuff for the first time, in a very long time. Problem is, everyone I know is working during the week. So, anything I do, I have to do it alone. I've noticed a different dynamic. I run into nothing but retired people, doing stuff during the day when everyone else is working. I've noticed they are a "fussy" bunch. I'm not ready to join them (do they really find it that difficult to make a deposit at the bank?). I'm certainly less stressed. That can't be a bad thing. Girlfriend (who's jealous because she's working every day, still) says my demeanor is much better. My son says I'm much more fun to be around, too. I'll get serious about my next career move in the next couple of weeks. "

Very few of us ever get to take a sabbatical in life. Enjoy it to it's utmost. Pleased that the lack of stress is improving your humor and outlook and that everyone, girlfiriend and son are enjoying it. Weeks or a month or three . Personally I think many live life as if tomorrow were a work night. Which it is damn it. But if Clapton is only playing on Thursday, then in the words of Warren Zevon rip,
( notice how I cleverly snuck two artists in ) I'll sleep when I'm dead. Time for the standard disclaimer. Please continue with your car sales stories from the frontline.

Well Oby took the under so I'll take the over. I think it is. Though a poor man's sports car indeed, the same old girlfriend of " euthanansia " fame had a late '60's ghia convertible that was a blast to take on freeway cruises, Pretty sharp cornering, not bmw level but very decent and a kind of MG feeling as you were cruising. Acceleration ? Hey it's a VW,as in the classic original but I've always been a fan of the indestructible people's car.

Back in my college days there was a biology professor who drove one. I don't think I've ever seen anyone so in love with a car as he was. As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder! But what I couldn't figure out was how he fit into it. Let's just say he was volumetrically advanced. ;)

BMW's "Drive for the Cure" event is coming to Swope today. I'm scheduled to drive a 135i drop top as well as an X6. I'm not the slightest bit interested in owning either one(I can't take them to HPDEs) but they should be entertaining to drive. And then there are the three E46 M3s over in the pre-owned lot. Who knows?

"...Rebuilt title means the car was written off, and then rebuilt..."

Oh. Here in NY we call that a "Salvaged" title.

I remember one dealer who got in trouble for selling salvaged cars with doctored titles. Seems he was taking two similar totaled cars, one with front damage the other with rear damage. He would cut them in half and then weld the two good parts together. The car would be sold as a low-milage cream puff with a doctored title.

As I recall he got caught when one of his cars broke apart on the highway.

I swear this is 100 percent true! About 4 years ago I sold "Dick" a new CRV. About 1 1/2 years ago he came in and bought off of another salesman purposely avoiding all contact with me. Oh, and I used to travel 30 miles out of my way and drop off my personal car to him to bring his car in for service. About three weeks ago he calls and asks me to come get his car for service. " Hey buddy I looked for you last time I bought a car but you were on vacation and the wife wouldnt wait." Oh. Ok.

Looking at the big picture, I tell him yes in hopes that this time I will earn his business again. I take my aging prelude to trade with his wife and bring her year old CRV with 19,000 miles in for service. The problems he described on the car were very noticable. It had a very apparent rumble/vibration when you turned the wheels to full lock and moved. Turns out the CRVs are very susceptible to rear diffrential services and/or lack of same. The work was performed and the customer was going to be charged 65.00. Dick goes ballistic with the service advisor.

So this morning, the service advisor comes over and shows me the results of the survey that Dick turned in. He, not only trashed service and honda for making a piece of junk, he was mad at the loaner that the dealer made him drive because it was filthy and "felt like the front end was coming off of it."

I got sold out for a car sale by this jerk, used for a free loaner and valet service then he has the nerve to trash me and my car, paersonally on the survery. Wow!

Someone is going to get a strongly worded letter placed in their permanent file! And no one can talk me out of it!

duke....even being "unemployed", I consider myself tremendously fortunate. It sounds cliche now, but I'm healthy. Got a good son (who's ready to go out into the world shortly, fully prepared). I really want for nothing (nothing of great value, anyway). I've got people who sincerely like to be around me (at least, that's what they tell me).

My "sabbatical" won't last forever. But, while it's here, I'm enjoying every minute of it. While I'm not what one would call a "good Samaritan", I've been volunteering since I've got some time on my hands. Did some "food free store" detail yesterday. That's an eye-opener (both for good and ill). I saw people who were truly needy. Saw others who just know how to work the system.

I'm teaching immigrants how to speak and read English the past few weeks. Won't get into the legality of their status here. But, they truly do want to better themselves. They consider America their best (and sometimes, only) hope to do so. To the person, they're all grateful and appreciative. Regardless of your political stance, one thing's for certain, their road is hard, and certainly filled with peril.

    I'm blessed and thankful.

Back to cars.....drove the Infinit EX and Gx yesterday. Both are fine vehicles. Both are strong performers. We only have one Infiniti dealer around these parts. Both were all loaded up and had MSRP is the $40K+ range. Preferred the EX because of the incentives and the nicer interior (over the G). Floated the $7K off MSRP that qbrozen mentioned on the EX 35, including the $4K dealer cash.

The salesperson said he wasn't aware of the $4K incentive. He asked me to make an offer. I floated $33K out there on the EX 35. No counter offer was forthcoming. He wouldn't even take that offer to the GM/SM, but did keep pushing the 0% financing or lease. Told him I wasn't interested in the lease. I might be interested in the 0% finance rate. Sales person mentioned that the 0% couldn't be combined with the incentives. "I thought you weren't aware of any incentives?".

It's not like these are scarce. They've probably got 25 of them hanging on the lot. I know that would be a very skinny deal, but if you want to move a unit quick and easy. I know of the dealer group the Infiniti store is a part of. They're usually pretty straight up. Maybe the sales person was having a bad day. Maybe he'll get religion. I'll let them mull it over for awhile.

    Today, it's hounding Honda dealers.

Who is this guy Dick that you would drive 30 minutes to pick up his car for service? You sell Hondas, not Bentley's, correct?

If you weren't on vacation, and he purposefully avoided you when buying from another salesman... I would have told him to go to hell if he asked me to come pick up his car. Then I would have given him directions... via gps of course.... not personal experience.

Jip, thanks for "siding" with me on this one. No, I was not on vacation and he wouldnt even look me in the eye when he was dealing with the other salesman. I tried to be a bigger person and even tried to "resurrect" him as a customer when he called asking for personal service. I normally dont mind picking peoples cars up for service. I want them to get a mental picture of me when they think of their car and hopefully earn their business and their friends' business in the future. Some folks get it. Some dont.

But its nothing a few well placed coronas wont cure... ;)

That's pretty good service you offer. I'd only do it in super special circumstances (like when my customers got a flat, and couldn't find their wheel locks, I drove across town, helped with a tow, and drove them home on a Sunday).

Carhag, maybe the customer thought that the valet service is a standard service that every dealer provides, and maybe he thought that your personal Prelude was a company car, and for a company car it was not very presentable? Or did hge know that the valet service was from you only and that actually you went out of your way to help him.

Sometimes customers don't understand or don't care the sacrifice you put in for them, like extra time, effort, etc.... Sometimes they need to be edumacated.

PS I hope you made some killer gross on that deal for you to be going out of your way like that, ;)

See, you get it. You and I would have a great sales/client relationship. I bet the first transaction would be a little bit protracted while we bob and weave and "play the game" for a bit, but I bet subsequent purchases would be smooth once we both know what the other needs/wants. And if you appreciate honest efforts at taking care of you, then we would have 0 problems.

Just came from my local Honda store....

As I've stated before....these are fine cars, too. The Accord hits all of my "buttons" of what I'm looking for.

Given my own advice of offering one price, one time, here's where I'm at. '08 EX-L w/Navi, 4 cyl, automatic, black on black.

Got a mailer from Penske Honda in IN....about two hours from me. Don't know why, except I dealt with their Chevy store a while ago for my sister (and it wasn't good).

Anyway, Penske states they'll sell any Accord for a penny over invoice. Armed with this mailer, I went to my local store. Asked them if they were true to their promise to beat any legitimate deal. They said "yes", as long as it was a "like for like" car and they had it in stock. I pulled out the Penske mailer, and their stock situation (pulled from their internet site).

    Here's what's on the table.....
    MSRP=$28,730
    Inv=$26,086.00
    Dealer add-on tint (which I don't care about)=$249

Here's my OTD offer...told the sales manager it's a one shot deal.....

    -$25,886.01 ($200 under invoice plus a penny)
    -tax=$1,624.00
    -doc fee=$35
    -license=$55
-rubber Honda mats- (in addition to the ones that come with the car)=free I don't know what these sell for, but I need them for winter time.
-tint job=free (does that dark tint really cost $250?)

TOTAL (all in and nothing more) $27,700.01

They balked. Tried to bump me. I thanked them for their time. I told them I was looking at other cars. I left.

Just got a voice mail. I haven't been out of their store more than 30 minutes. Guess they changed their minds. They say they'll accept my offer. C'mon back!

I'll sleep on it tonight and see how I feel about the car tomorrow. But, I'm liking this deal.

You would actually do that for a customer? You are a better person than I am for sure!

When I managed a large shop years ago, I learned that often, the people you do the most for appreciate it the least.

The times I tried to save a customer money by cutting corners at their request, were usually a mistake.

    Sad but so true.

    Right.

Which is why I have made it very clear with my salesfolks on the floor that "Let the customer know, in no uncertain terms" that they are doing a favor for them and that it is NOT the store policy. BUT, do it very decently without offending the customer.

I came close to buying one in Columbus last month (less the nav) for invoice less holdback plus $200. Couldn't see two grand for the nav though, especially without a backup camera.

Splash guards are worth the money and the liner for the underside of the rear decklid (about $50) finishes off the trunk nicely.

It sounds like that dealer likes to play games, so play the game. Call him tomorrow and tell him you’re still considering his offer but before you pull the trigger you have to convince yourself that an Altima isn’t in you’re future. If he doesn’t say anything or goes to talk to his boss, I’d be surprised. The one thing I can’t go along with is ‘game playing’.

It’s up to you to see how much they will have to pay for this. You know as well as anyone, game playing is a culture; it doesn’t stop on the sales floor.

I don’t have to tell you how to deal and I know you can recognize a good deal when you see it, so I'm not going to insult you with any of that. That offer they agreed to sounds pretty good to me so you might not want to push it. It’s just that I totally dislike game playing.

BTW, if you go for that Honda, don’t fall for that F&I stuff. :D

    Good luck.

Geez graphicguy, why wouldn't you want to "hang with" some folks who drive Volvos? Sure, some of the people still pushing 240 sedans with 300K on the clock can be tiresome and anyone who spent 50K for an S80 is maybe lights-on no one home in the car-smarts department. But, how about the people who have the V70/XC70 wagons?

They are a fairly adventuresome bunch with Kayaks on the roof and successful , good looking 40 year old couples with kids inside, as they make their way thru life. They aren't conspicuous consumers but smart ones. By all accounts Volvo seats are the best in the business for loooong interstate trips and the XC will haul more stuff over worse roads than a E Class, 5 Series, or Audi A6 wagon. The buy-in price is also about 20-40K less than the Germans. Moreover, more people can actually BUY a Volvo wagon than LEASE a German equivalent. They then get the benefit of owning it into its low depreciation years rather than having to climb back on the leasing merry go round. Buying one frees up some space in the budget for the guy to pick up a something with some more zip. Personally, I'd rather have a bunch of couples over that had Volvo wagons than the Suburu crowd.

One more in sympathy of a maligned salesperson. He gives his business to another person. You go the extra mile and a half and perform extraordinary service for this hole, err that's right his name was Dick and so lacking of cognizance of what you have done for him he trashes you in a survey. It does hurt when you get your good nature trampled on. Feel a tune coming on...picturing a queen, ok it's over, another one bites the dust. Clear headed now. I have found over the years that jerks are attracted to jerks in sales, they can relate to each other and good people are attracted to other good people. Do consider this a compliment that you must be a good person or else you would have forged a bond. And congratulations on your record year.
Should our paths ever cross , I'll buy you that corona.

A $35 doc fee in Ohio? Wow.. every dealer I see charges the state allowable max of $250...

If that's Gen.MGR.Bob @ Perf... then tell him you want all the holdback plus the $200... Tell him he can make it up on the next guy...

"Oh.

As I recall he got caught when one of his cars broke apart on the highway"

I don't care who you are, that's funny ! Thanks, of.

An Ex V-6? Coming from a BMW the 4 cyl might not have enough oomph for you. Perhaps just a little more off if it's '08. The '09's are due out next month. That and the trunk liner and mudflaps gratis. Yah and the tint job free. N/C for the Simonize.
