Yes, I have thought about that. Honda has a great lease rate as well ending 1/5. So part of me feels damned either way by letting this 1/5 promotion period go away.
I am still undecided over which car I want (enclave, flex, pilot) and I don't want to scramble over the next 3-4 days to test drive all three and work a deal and eat 2 lease payments.
I guess the good news is that my "heart" is not set on any particular vehicle this time around. I just need an 8 passenger mid-size SUV at a decent price.
j...regarding the Mrec GM Marauder. Was talking to my neighbor last night again. He's very proud of his "new" acquisition. Weather was fairly decent around here yesterday. And, he was outside giving it a good detail.
He says these Marauders are "collectors cars". I vaguely remember them when they came out. I guess in its current iteration, it was only made for two years (03-'04). To me, there's probably a good reason for that.
But, I guess it had a Mustang "tuned" V8. Merc put some higher rate springs and shocks in it. Tightened up the steering and tried to sell it as a "middle aged" hot rod.
The interior wasn't much different than the one in my Father's '96. Except, it had bucket seats, floor mounted shifter, and a few more gauges in the console. Asdie from that, not much difference.
He told me the specs. I guess the motor had 300 HP (compared to the regular 230HP) and a bit more torque than standard.
Still, how collectible can this thing be?
It's a Mercury. Apparently, one that didn't sell well. And, one that has a ton of miles on it.
I don't think I'll live long enough for it to be considered collectable.
That said, it's his money. That's not something I'd do. If he wants to spend $12K on what essentially is a slightly "souped up" Grand Marquis, who am I to argue?
Then again, he's got another "collectable", too. It's a '64 Ford Falcon with a straight 6 and "3 on the tree". He says that's worth big dollars too :surprise:
I finally pulled the trigger and helped the economy. I got the Mazdaspeed 3 (2009 Black Sport model). I feel I got a good price and was treated very well, so I am very happy to finally have this car. I know rb has not had good luck with his, but I am hoping for better fortune.
Here was the deal - 2009 Mazdaspeed 3 Sport with wheel locks. MSRP $23460 paid $22K plus $299 doc fee, dmv fees of $170 and tax (6% in CT). They also have a service special which I will go back and purchase for $299 (includes 8 oil changes, 8 car washes, 4 free rental cars for major services every 15K miles, tire rotations, free body shop estimates)
I kept my old Corolla - it's worth about $800 trade, so I'll drive it when the weather is bad.
I can't wait to give the dealer all excellent marks on the survey - they are close by, and I would definitely go back!
it's definitely a niche car. about 11,000 (per wiki) were sold over 2 years. they were pretty pricey, about 35k new. a dealer near here has one for sale for 12K. 36,000 miles on it. last fall i saw a private party ad for one with 5k on it for sale for 22,500. the ad was only out for 1 week.

Good deal; I paid sticker for my Grand Touring back in July 2007. That said, they flatbedded the car I wanted from Cleveland to Cincinnati for free AND I get free 5000 mile oil changes for as long as I own the car. Have fun!

Congrats, Jip! While I did not use the "Jipst method" this time around, I feel I still did well and the dealer seemed content with the deal as well.
LOL. I'm pleasantly surprised someone remembered the ole "Jipst method". Just goes to show that with enough advertising you can sell anything (i.e dubya).

...so, I'm not the first - I was out driving my new car earlier today.
It's good to know someone is out there buying a new car these days. Per, you are a patriot. Well, I guess you could be a better patriot if it was a B3 car, but let's not go there. You are stimulating the economy.
My son in law just got a Lexus RX Hybrid which should be nice. He is getting rid of his Suburban. I hated the Suburban and said I won't take him to the airport because I hate driving it and you can't park it anywhere. But, I'll take him to the airport in the new Lexus anytime. He always bought the biggest American car he could afford......now he's even getting a foreign make - and he's getting the hybrid because that's what the kids insisted on. Just shows how much things change and the B3 have lost another customer.
"How's that for REFERNCING two threads in one post?"
That mighty fine---as long as you can spell it. :P
These days, I call a new car an investment because of what it cost, the maintenance to drive it, and how long you have to keep it to get your money's worth out of it. Investments are usually for the future. In this case, the future could be from 1-20 years. Happy New Year to you as well.
Napelton Hyundai in West Palm Beach has an ad today stating they have "10 left" 2008 Elantra's in stock in the Sun-Sentinel paper. I called earlier and the guy stated he'd look and "call me right back". Two hours go by and I call him back. All of a sudden, they sold the last '08 model of the "10" they advertise. He tells me it was "just sold" which I don't believe. Why on earth didn't he call me back in a reasonable time. Then he proceded to tell me to come in as the '09's have a rebate of a 'few hundred less"...it's $500. less now and I had to tell him that.
This is a prime example of why the public will not trust car dealers. He obviously had no intention of calling me back, he sounded real off balance when I called him back and when I asked why he didn't return my call, he mumbled something I couldn't understand and when I asked him to repeat this...silence! He didn't seem to know his product...hell, I knew more than he did! He also mumbled something unintelligible when I inquired when the "last of the 10" were sold and never got a definite answer on that one.
Who can I call to pursue this obvious fraud to complain about. Writing a letter to the store owner is where I'll start but doubt he'll admit any wrong doing. There must be an organization who deals with consumer fraud besides the better business bureau. This kinda situation really stinks and I'm sure this happens a good part of the time, dealers placing ads for something they don't have. Funny too, cause if they had the car I wanted, I'd a put a deposit down then and there. Why on earth didn't this guy just call me back and give me an honest answer as to when the last couple were sold? Speaks volumes to me about how this dealership runs their operations. Guess they don't teach honesty and integrity to their staff.
Napelton Hyundai in West Palm Beach Florida is a very unethical dealership...buyers beware!!
To be fair it takes time to put together and ad and get in published in a newspaper. Dealerships are in the business of selling cars and they could very well have done that. Now I will admit that selling 10 cars in that period of time might be a stretch of the imagination, but it is possible.
It reminds me of a story that happened a year ago last summer. A friend of mine was looking for a stripped down basic Ford Focus with a manual tranny. Well he walked into a Ford dealership mid week just as they were taking delivery on one that they ordered for a big weekend sales event. This car was to be featured in their big ad on Friday and Saturday (can't sell cars on Sundays), but he drove it off the lot on Thursday. Now when they had the big sales event they didn't have the car that they advertised at a low price. Now do you fault the dealer for actually selling that car when they did?
2011 Hyundai Sonata, 2014 BMW 428i convertible, 2015 Honda CTX700D
But do you really think they had "10" '08 Elantra's that NOBODY in my area has had for weeks? And my callback never came...I had to call him back. I was a potential sale and I really wanted the particular car they advertised. I went on his word he's call back...he didn't...and actions speak louder than words to me. Salesmen should treat every call as if it'll result in a sale...that's why the word "sales" is in their title. This guy didn't finish his job with me. And unfortunately, so many stores employ guys like this.
The funny part is, I'm about ready to buy another vehicle. Bought one last month and still one more to go.
But do you really think they had "10" '08 Elantra's that NOBODY in my area has had for weeks?
Sorry but a quick internet search found a few '08's new in that area so I don't think nobody has had them. I found one dealership by me with 16 left in inventory (or at least the last time they updated this one website). But all I am doing is trying to keep an open mind.
And my callback never came...I had to call him back.
Thats a bad salesman, but if they were gone (or never existed) then he maybe just wanted to spend time trying to sell what they had. Again not saying thats the way to do things but that could explain why he didn't call back. Tell me have you never gotten busy all of a sudden and forgot to call someone back in a timely matter?
Also I would not taint an entire dealership based on one story about one salesman.
2011 Hyundai Sonata, 2014 BMW 428i convertible, 2015 Honda CTX700D
And my callback never came...I had to call him back.
Same thing happened to my when I bought my 06 Tundra, nothing unique about that. I called a few dealerships to ask if they had what I wanted in stock, spoke with the sales person and gave the details of what I was interested in, sales person said they'd call back after searching their inventory, and a couple never called back at all. I was amazed. But I didn't sweat it, crossed them off my list, and moved on. There are bad sales persons at every dealership I guess.
"...There are bad sales persons at every dealership I guess..."
Ain't that the truth. On the same day at two dealerships right next to each other I saw the extremes. I was looking for a particular vehicle at a particular price point. At the first dealer the young kid took me out to the end of the lot and pointed me towards a vehicle which was nowhere close to what I had asked for and was TWICE my price point. He then without a word walked away and never came back.
At the second dealer I had multiple sales people almost knocking each other over shouting offers and trying to steal the sale away from each other.
I didn't buy from either.
2019 Kia Soul+, 2015 Mustang GT, 2013 Ford F-150, 2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible
Is it possible that since they ran the ad in the paper they have sold all 10 that they advertised? Being that the last week of December is the busiest of the year, is that possible?
Is it possible that the kid you talked to was busy with customers in the store and didn't care about some guy inquiring about the ad on the phone?
Is it possible that you were on the offense as soon as you got on the phone and he didn't like your attitude?
Who can I call to pursue this obvious fraud to complain about.
I would start with your therapist. Pursuing this with anyone else is just going to raise your blood pressure more and get you absolutely nowhere.
You have suffered no damages. No one was rude to you. No one stole from you. With all that being said, you're obviously in no danger of buying a vehicle.
Get a warm cup of cocoa. Snuggle up to your cat and have a happy new year. Anything else you do will be as effective as peeing into the wind.
I didn't even go out. I cooked for all of my friends and relatives to come over for all the "Bowl Games". Had to start New Year's Eve. I did have a "sip" (or two) of Woodford as the clock struck midnight, though. I also enjoyed a fine "Macanudo portofino" while I was sipping, too.
jmonroe......no more vices? You still come here. Isn't that a vice? :P
jipster....ah yes, I forgot the "jipster method" of car buying....
-find a car -find a salesman -pack a lunch -settle in comfortably at the negotiation table -state to the salesman....."I can do this all day long, if you want. I've got my lunch here to prove it."
Generally, I've always found a better dealership experience when I was looking "in-person". That doesn't absolve anyone for not calling back. Then again, I'm usually not in a hurry when I'm buying a car, either. If someone doesn't call me back after I place a phone inquiry, I don't take it as a slight. It may influence me when I do make the trip to the dealership, whether I buy there or not.
I wouldn't consider this fraud by any stretch. They had 10 cars. As others pointed out, the newspaper ads are done days in advance. It could very well be they sold them between the time they approved the ad and the time the ad hit the paper.
Not trying to put words in any of the salespeople here, but if I were a betting man, the customer that's sitting at my desk will always take priority over the potential customer on the phone. It's not unusual for any sales person to take a couple of hours to put together a deal with someone who's already present, at their store.
Also I would not taint an entire dealership based on one story about one salesman.
Really? Remember, this was a Hyundai dealer in South Florida, one more strike and he’s out. He’ll probably move onto a Nissan product. :shades:

I spent New Years Eve playing Phase 10 and Rummy with my wife and daughter. I then fell asleep on the couch, woke up at 5 seconds to midnight, kissed my beautiful bride and went back to sleep. Think I had a total of 1 beer all night. When I woke up that morning I was so glad I did not over induldge the night before.
joel....Actually, what you did is not a bad way to "ring in the New Year". This is the first new year's eve I was "solo" (no wife, no girlfriend, no date) in a very long time.
My friends and family wanted to know how I felt about that. Overall, I was OK with it. It was fun cooking, listening to a little Sinatra/Bennet/Buble/Setzer while doing so. Drank a little fine bourbon in the process. Congratulated myself upon finishing with a good cigar. Called it a night (early a.m.). No crazy parties. No getting all dressed up (except for some jeans and a sweatshirt). No fighting with a hotel crowd. Got to sleep in my own bed, which is becoming something I appreciate much more over the last few months.
All-in-all, there's something to be said about staying out of the "fracas" of New Year's Eve.
"...It's a '64 Ford Falcon with a straight 6 and "3 on the tree". He says that's worth big dollars too..."
I've seen several '63-'64 Falcons on craigslist asking anywhere from 4K to 35K.
I can't figure that. They weren't that special looking new and age hasn't improved the looks any
Hum...summer of '70 just before second year of college dad picked up a '64 Falcon from a local farmer for around $650. His daughter had driven it several years to college. 2 speed auto, breather had 170 ci "Special" sticker on it. Never did figure out what was special about it. Drove it several times from Fayetteville, Ar to Texarkana down Hwy 72...pretty hilly. There were a number of sections that you could just put it on the floor and keep it there.. It would top out between 80-85 downhill and drop down to maybe 55 or 60 on some of the worst uphill stretches.
Reasonably ugly and very basic, but durable and pretty reliable. I would probably go $650 for one in decent shape and running pretty good now :-)
Sold that one back to dad when I upgraded to a '73 Monte Carlo, paid $4345 new for that one...those were the days.
Sandman, don't let it bother you... just he way some dealerships do business. They probably had 10 Elantras among their dealership group about a month before the ad came out in the paper. Seems it would be fairly easy to call a newspaper and edit the number from "10" available to "2" or whatever .... but that wouldn't be good for business (getting people to call or come in) now would it?
As for the salesman not calling you back, just find another one who puts the customer first. As we all know turnover is very high in car sales, this guy probably is on his way out and could care less... he's probably looking for a quick score. Knowing there are no Elantras left, he's thinking why bother with someone who won't be buying.
gg, that would be the "Jipst Method" of car buying, which is protected by patent # 568-98A-5N34-21SK057. The "Jipster Method" would be packing a dinner as well as the sack lunch... not yet patented.

Yeh, like I said, my son-in-law got a new Lexus RX hybrid. He went to 3 dealers and he was amazed none of them tried too hard to win him over. None of them called him, none of them were aggressive in their selling techniques. So, don't feel bad if they aren't chasing you down for a Hyundai.
Also, dealers are probably working with fewer staff these days. A phone call isn't a priority if there is a live customer sitting across from the salesperson. At least I hope so, if I am at the dealership in person I sure want preference over the telephone inquiry. The thing is, how many of those telephone enquiries actually become a sale any way? Probably walk ins are one in 10 and telephone is 1 in 50 or 100...just a guess - but would be interesting to get real estimates from the pros.
Also, dealers are probably working with fewer staff these days.
You are correct on that count. At least in our store. We have cut the sales force from 25 to 15 and the sales office fields all sales calls. The Managers sift through them and pass good leads off to sales people while they handle the "how much is my 82 Gremlin dart avenger worth" type calls.
RB, I don't know if they are idiots but I truly belive that there is something in the atmosphere of a car dealer that makes normal people loose grasp of all basic math skills.
It is the only place in the world where people will think that you can divide $30K by 60 and come up with $400 a month.
Out of 10 calls, 5 will book appts to come in, half of those 5 will show up = 2 or 3, and one will buy. Closing ratio is higher on appointments over walk ins.
However a live customer who is here will always take priority over phone or internet inquires.
Internet is the worst because I'll get about 5 deals for every 100 inquiries. (5% closing ratio).
Most like to hide behind the anonomity ( :confuse: about spelling) of the internet and fire off random emails, ask for quotes, photos, only to never respond again.
Acutally when someone sends an inquiry online, I can establish contact with only 50% of the inquirerers by phone or email. I don't understand why someobody would even go as far as filling out a credit app only to never respond to our emails or phone calls. :confuse:
If there's an internet inquiry that has no proper name attached, and no phone number then it goes to the bottom of the pile.
Walkins closing ratio is about 1 in 10. Phone calls ratio is actually about the same. Out of 10 calls, 5 will book appts to come in, half of those 5 will show up = 2 or 3, and one will buy. Closing ratio is higher on appointments over walk ins
Very interesting and much higher than I would have expected. I have neighbor that took 2 years to decide and he went to the dealer almost every week. It had to be a Chev product but he probably went to 20 dealers over the 2 years. I thought there were lots of tire kickers, the curious, the daydreamers, the I don't have anything else to do with my life, the comparison shopper (10 dealers or more), the I just like sitting in different cars, the waiting for my wife types, etc. That's a pretty good closing ratio really.

Send your letter to your State's Attorney General Office. If they get enough of them they will look into.

-find a car
-find a salesman
-pack a lunch
-settle in comfortably at the negotiation table
-state to the salesman....."I can do this all day long, if you want. I've got my lunch here to prove it."
Really? Remember, this was a Hyundai dealer in South Florida, one more strike and he’s out. He’ll probably move onto a Nissan product. :shades:

I had a guy come in today. He wanted to be under $500.00 a month on an 09 A4, with 4 grand neg on a Durango, 0 down, credit score around 580.
I just wave my magic wand and poof, your an owner......
The Magician.
And I'll bet he still stiffed you on the survey...

The "Jipster Method" would be packing a dinner as well as the sack lunch... not yet patented.
oldfarmer, thought you farmers could hold your booze better. Next time have jmonroe drop you off at your front door, instead of sticking you headfirst into a snow bank.
Yeah, you got me on that one but to defend myself, that’s not really a vice that’s an ADDICTION and someone with your longevity otta know that.

You are correct on that count. At least in our store. We have cut the sales force from 25 to 15 and the sales office fields all sales calls. The Managers sift through them and pass good leads off to sales people while they handle the "how much is my 82 Gremlin dart avenger worth" type calls.
It is the only place in the world where people will think that you can divide $30K by 60 and come up with $400 a month.
Phone calls ratio is actually about the same.
Out of 10 calls, 5 will book appts to come in, half of those 5 will show up = 2 or 3, and one will buy.
