Consumer rebate. Negotiate your best price, then subtract the incentive.

It's the dealer's money from VW. It isn't something they will take off their offered price.
But, the offered price, or your offer to them should be $3000 less than it otherwise would be.

Sorry, but it seems a bit confusing...i'm looking at a new 2018 Jetta with a bloated MSRP of $23,495. Dealer has quoted it as $18,995, assuming due to true invoice, demand depreciation, etc..i offered payments based on $15,995 and when rationalizing, I mentioned the 3k bonus. Sales manager scrambled and told me everything from, it could "theoretically" be built into that price, to, he didn't have to oblige that incentive. I asked for the math to how they got there and he couldn't fathom the answer. Showed him brand new 2019s for less and the convo ended. Said the best he could do on a 2018 jetta se was $460/mo for 10k/36. I laughed.

Is $23,495 the actual MSRP, or not?

That's what I need to know! When I build the same car on the vw website, it comes to an msrp of just over 21k. What's most confusing to me is, wouldn't this be the original msrp, when the 2018 came out? Or would this be an updated/prorated msrp due to the fact that the 2019s are out? I just don't see how both 2018 and 2019 same models are neck and neck with msrp, so when I see that the 2018 I want, is so easily visable on the dealer's website at $18,995, I should be able to work that down, no??  Furthermore, Michaell above said negotiate best price and subtract the 3k. This is supposed to be a rebate, not dealer cash, correct? My apologies if being daft.

I want to mention that there are several unscrupulous VW dealers here in the DFW area that post false prices (like $5,500 below invoice) on their web sites to get people to go in to their showrooms. Only to find out that the dealer has installed mandatory (and worthless imho) dealer options that typically add $2,000 to $2,500 back to the price (what do you know, that adds up to the factory incentive and zero dealer discount). The dealers do not disclose this practice on their web sites, so it is deceptive and misleading at best. I urge buyers to be cautious and to call first, but I have found that the only words they can say on the phone are "COME ON DOWN TO OUR SHOWROOM!" If you ask for a sales manager, they always say he is busy, and if you leave a message they don't call back. They don't want to speak with educated buyers. So be very wary of VW dealers unscrupulous sales practices. I just felt I should share what I learned to avoid others so much time wasted. I eventually found an honest dealer who would give me pricing and lease terms over the phone and a fair discount. I gladly gave that dealership my business. I hope this is helpful to my fellow travelers.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful and helpful response! Did your dealer disclose/break down that discount for you? Or was it discounted at 2k and you asked for the 3k additional?

I asked him if there was any lease cash, and he acknowledged that there was $3,000 in lease cash. I mentioned that I wanted to get the payment under $230 with zero down, and he offered the additional $2,000 off to get the payment down to $223.

Note that the lease sales tax of 6.25% in Texas is based on the sales price and is added into the capitalized costs. In most other states, the tax is based on the monthly payment and is added to the payment. The result is that Texans pay more sales tax. In this example, I think it's about $20 more. I think that a roughly equivalent lease in another state would have a monthly payment of about $210.

A note about residuals on 2018 Jetta S (46%) vs 2019 Jetta S (61%) 36/12k lease
The higher residual on the 2019 lowers the Depreciation by about $3,000.
This $3,000 savings on the 2019 is the equivalent of $3,000 in lease cash on the 2018.
(there is currently no lease cash offered on the 2019.)
However, the MF on the 2019 is higher, so that increases the payment (in TX it's about $41/month).
And, the dealers aren't all that motivated to discount the 2019s yet.
FWIW, my local dealer offered to discount the 2019 by $750, so I guess you could use that as a baseline discount.
Even though the residual on the 2019 offsets the lease cash on the 2018, the smaller discount combined with the higher MF made the 2019 payment quite a bit higher. So, I decided to lease the 2018.
I'll post the 2019 deal info on that forum later when I have time.

I've heard this particular dealer is shorting the incoming of 2019s due to the old inventory, but they are being shady. Unfortunately, we have a current lease at said dealer and are trying to lease-up early and they seem to be taking advantage of that. Currently working on a buy-out deal with another dealer, so we can bring our business there. Never, in 30 years have I dealt with this silliness..i pay $399/mo for my brand new, loaded BMW with an Msrp of 42k..only put 2k down (2,795 drive off including 1st payment) so this is a real head-scratcher...

No.. it's a dealer incentive.. And, it's different for lease vs. purchase, so the advertised price might not be valid.

But, you have to know the actual MSRP before you start. Without it, you don't know what you are getting.

Illinois collects the tax upfront, but it's not applied to the full purchase price, just the sum of payments.
So, much less tax than Texas.

You can re-lease at any VW dealer. You aren't tied to that dealer.

Your lease is through VW Credit, not the dealer.
Once you drove off that lot, your connection to that dealer was done.

But, be warned... .getting out of a lease a year early can be very expensive. Dealers are in business to sell cars, so they may not lay that out for you. The chances of making a good deal, while trading in a lease that is that far from over, are not good.
