    Loyalty should stack.

I doubt the $500 customer cash is valid for the lease program.

    Thanks for your help, kyfdx!

I’m a rookie car buyer and went out for the first time today to the Mazda dealership. Tried some strategies I read on here and also tried to use the MF and residual provided above.

For a 2019 AWD CR-5 Touring (with preferred package) in blue trim/black interior, I was offered $2.5k down payment (includes fees and cap reduction) at $309/month for 36 months, 10k miles a year. The bad news — and I know this is a rookie mistake — is that I didn’t get the actual cost of the vehicle and/or fee or incentive breakdown. Zip code is 07016.

Is this a decent lease or am I getting hosed? Based on my own calcs, it seemed good but again I know a lot less than you guys. Any help would be awesome so I could proceed (or move on). Thanks!

You said it yourself - you don't have all the information needed to make a qualified decision. And, without it, there isn't much we can do to help, either.

Reach out to the dealer to get the missing information, then we can help.

Fair point Michael. Apologies for wasting time, rookie mistake. The below sheet was provided for 10k miles/36 months.

2019 AWD Touring w/ preferred package (blue trim/black interior):

    MSRP $30,435
    Savings (1,500)
    Rebate (1,050)
    Cap cost. 27,885
    Total add ons 369
    Tax 925.05
    Dealer/state fees 843.50
    Total price. 30,022.55

    Customer cash. 1,000
    Net residual. 18,869.70
    Drive off. 2,050

The above was provided originally and they wanted 2k down and 338/month. I then did some negotiating and they moved to offered 2,500 down and 308/month

I believe the res was 62% and the MF was .00120, but not positive.

Let me know what other info I can provide. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the response @Michaell . I’m looking to confirm with the car dealership (closed today), but I think it all goes toward the down payment because, as you mentioned, it appears all the fees and taxes are in the adjusted cap. I didn’t realize it at the time in the showroom, I was lost in all their jargon and pointing all all different prices, but this is what it appears like now that I’m digesting the numbers. I think the $2,500 is down payment and the total drive off would be $3,500. Seems high to me.

Below is the actual page they gave me (you can see the heading of the matrix is “cash down” leading me to believe that’s what it’s for). I initially said “what can you give me a month if I put down a $1k all inclusive drive away price?” The sales manager came out of his office with this and said “well if you put 2k down, I’ll get you to 338/month. If you put down 2,500, I’ll give you a bargain and give you the 308/month which I usually reserve for the 3,000 down payment.” I think he was purposely confusing me on the the concepts of down payment and drive away.

At the time it sounded great, but now I think the down payment is just that and not the drive off price I would’ve hoped for (you can see that under the 1k down payment scenario, my drive off would be $2,050, and now we’ve added another $1.5k). With that, and having the fees and taxes in the adjusted cap, I don’t know how badly I’m getting taken, or if this is standard for the industry/car.

Not sure if this makes sense but hopefully it helps a bit. I haven’t made a deal yet but am looking to make a fair deal for both parties. Thanks for any help, this is my first go round at this (as I’m sure you can tell) and just wanted some guidance. Thanks!

Do this - when you go in tomorrow, tell them the only out of pocket you want to pay is the first payment and the NJ registration costs. Estimate $750.

So, have them give you a quote with only that amount out of pocket, then check with us. The number you want is the adjusted cap cost.

Fair point Michael. Apologies for wasting time, rookie mistake. The below sheet was provided for 10k miles/36 months.

2019 AWD Touring w/ preferred package (blue trim/black interior):

    MSRP $30,435
    Savings (1,500)
    Rebate (1,050)
    Cap cost. 27,885
    Total add ons 369
    Tax 925.05
    Dealer/state fees 843.50
    Total price. 30,022.55

    Customer cash. 1,000
    Net residual. 18,869.70
    Drive off. 2,050

The above was provided originally and they wanted 2k down and 338/month. I then did some negotiating and they moved to offered 2,500 down and 308/month

I believe the res was 62% and the MF was .00120, but not positive.

Let me know what other info I can provide. Thanks in advance!

With the MSRP and Total Price, I get $368/mo

What does the $2500 up front cover? Looks like the taxes and fees are part of the adjusted cap cost.

Thanks!

2019 CX-5 Touring AWD with Preferred Package (36 months / 10k per / deep blue trim) using the original base of 1k down with a total of $2k drive off:

Do this - when you go in tomorrow, tell them the only out of pocket you want to pay is the first payment and the NJ registration costs. Estimate $750.

So, have them give you a quote with only that amount out of pocket, then check with us. The number you want is the adjusted cap cost.
@Michaell — I took your advice and got the below from another dealership. Not only is it a lot easier to see the breakdown, but i think it’s pretty good. But again, that’s why I’m here.

They gave me four scenarios from left to right: nothing paid on day one ($368/month); only first month paid on day one ($358/month); a total of 1k paid on day 1 ($350 for first month, remainder to cap -> $338/month); or a total of 1.3k (first month and 1k against cap -> 329/month). Think I’m leaning towards option 2 or 4, but was wondering your thoughts on the overall deal. Let me know if I can provide anything further and thanks as always.

The only Mazda term that makes any sense is 36 months

    36/15
    .00120 MF and 54% residual

It really makes no difference. It's just a math exercise from there.

    @Wissman316

It appears your discount is just $1000 + $1050 incentive?

That isn't much of a discount, especially if you are giving $400 back as a dealer fee.

Seems like you could do $500-$1000 lower on price, at least.

Nice detail on the quote, though.

Thanks for the feedback. I’ll see if I can negotiate a bit. I’m assuming it doesn’t matter that I’m also getting the rebate (second to last line on the net cap) as this would be there no matter how much my discount is, so it makes sense to push a bit.

Correct.. Mazda supplies the rebate, the dealer supplies the discount.
