Got this really bad deal (I think). First time leasing and wondering what I should tell them to make it lower.
I've been posting on here and asking questions regarding BMW for at least a month now. I've finally closed on a deal this past Saturday and it all worked out. I am a pricing analyst and I like really digging into the numbers. When I learned about this method, I was really interested and even created my own Database/ calculator where I can save all the cars I am watching and manipulate the figures in order to find the best/ most reasonable deal.
Anyways, to anyone that is on here and looking to try this approach to leasing a new car, here are few suggestions:
- Be open to other body styles/ colors.
You might not be able to get the deal you want when looking for a specific car. Not because the you did anything wrong, but because the dealer simply might not want to make that deal.- Consider a Loaner Vehicle
Loaner vehicles for the most part have little mileage on them and you can get really good deals on them.- Look at the number of days a car has been on the lot.
Dealers look to move cars that have been sitting on the lot for awhile (I was looking at over 100 days (3 Months)). Also, Edmunds has that informaiton!- Make sure that your figures are correct!
Can’t stress this enough. When you make a proposal to the dealer, make sure that your numbers are 99% – 100% correct. The 1% off comes from dealer fees. In my area, those are paid upfront so they didn’t impact my monthly pay but, if you want to incorporate those figures into your lease, make sure they are correct. You might even want to call the dealer to just confirm the fee’s. You do not have to give them your contact information to get this information.- If you call the dealer, ask them what the selling price is in advance.
This is really helpful if you are looking for a loaner vehicle. If you know the selling price, you can really start to dig into the figures. What % off of MSRP are they priced at? Is that fair? Should it be lower? What is the dealer invoice of the car? Could I propose something lower? In my experience so far, they don't go much lower when it comes to a loaner car but, they might have a couple hundred to move.- Be confident in your figures.
Once you have a proposal ready, go over it a few times to make sure that you know exactly where everything is coming from. The sales manager and even sales reps are pretty savvy (especially at BMW). They know their figures and know how to confuse you or how to explain things in a way that will make you question your figures. When this happens reference the first point (take your time).- Your money factor is correct and make sure you get it.
The reason you are here is to get the money factor and residual value of the car. The dealer will NOT argue the residual value of the car for the most part. However, they WILL argue the money factor and explain how they cannot give you that since "the dealer has to make money too." They are making plenty. Fight for that money factor and don't be afraid to walk away from a deal if they do not budge. There are other things to be aware of but, I wanted to provide some pointers that really helped me get this deal and hopefully they help you.
Thanks to everyone who helped me on here and assisted in getting me my FIRST BMW!!

I did some haggling with a dealership and laid out exactly the deal i wanted.
I argued for 17% off msrp before incentives of 2750, and for base MF. They refused to give me base MF (btw credit score is top tier), and cited differentiantion of month deals as their rationale to only chop off 13.5% off msrp.
My question is, should we still be fighting for 15-17% off msrp, regardless of whether BMW has changed rebates monthly? And is that still our discount goal in a covid market?
Thanks.
Me? I'd keep shopping to find the deal I want.
