Thanks Michaell, we were hoping to get 0 down, except tax/title/registration/dealer fees, but we have no comparison for that, that's where they tend to get you. Are there any resources to help find out how much we should expect to pay at signing (even if we agree to $3000 down)? Or just ask each dealer what is out out of pocket to get $209/mo with $3k down, and go from there?

Forget the advertised deal, and concentrate on getting the best deal for you; the advertised deals focus on the low payment, and all the details that jack up that number are either part of the down payment, or hidden in the fine print.

As noted, almost $2800 of the $3K out of pocket is used to buy down the payment. That's about $78/mo, so before anything else (taxes, fees, whatever), the "true" payment is $287/mo. If you decide to add the acquisition fee ($595) to the payment, the payment goes up to $303/mo. Dealer fee? Payment goes up. Plus tax.

In NY, we recommend you pay the first payment, the registration costs, and the sales tax up front. Dealer and bank fees should be rolled into the payment. Any money up front over and above those items is at risk for loss if the vehicle is stolen or totaled during the lease.

Leasing can be a good deal, but you have to pay attention to the details, and understand all the numbers.

Thanks! This is so true. I've been trying to get information from dealers, but some of them are reluctant to quote all signing charges, drive-off fees. They are not revealing the capitalized cost either, but when I look at the numbers I get from Edmunds or others negotiated finance prices, and use the calculator to calculate monthly cost, it is not giving me same numbers.

The reason I mention the advertised deal was because I was hoping to get discount equaling the down payment, this way I can keep the advertised monthly payment + anything I build in like acquisition fee, etc.
For example, Toyota website does not reveal the adjusted capitalized cost that gets us $209/month.
When I look at what others paid, there is about 7-10% discount on most dealers. However, if I take $28k vehicle, minus 7%, minus $3k and then plugin numbers, it doesn't match. Maybe I am miscalculating
The reason is because my calculator builds the sales tax in, would you mind looking if my calculator is wrong? Because with the tax built in I am getting $201/month with $3000 down



It seems to me like if lease deal was with 6% off MSRP ($1730) dealer discount + $3000 buyer down payment, based on $24100 adjusted cap cost. If I pay the tax up front, it should be $184/month with $3000 down.

If I calculated correctly, advertised deal is for 4% off MSRP. That gets you $209/month without building anything in , and with $3000 down.




Versus advertised deal:



This means, if dealer is willing to offer 7.5% off MSRP we should be at $266/mo pre-tax, plus Acquisiton $650, DMV $350, 1st Month $$, $65 Doc Fee, $Tax divided by 36+finance charge. They gave me $961 taxes, which sounds very high, I am still waiting for msrp/adjusted cap cost, but either way taxes should be on payment and $209/mo x 36 @ 8.875% doesn't add up to $961. More like $668.

Thanks, just wanted to make sure I was calculating correctly. I will insist on getting the selling price and go from there. Can you believe that the Toyota Dealer in Brooklyn is insisting that I go there in order to get a written quote? When all other dealers are offering remote/online sales, even credit apps and then deliver the car to your door, this dealer insists I go there "to discuss numbers"...

I ended up taking it. Tried one more time to get them to a little lower and they said they won’t negotiate it anymore. For my first time solo with anything like this at all, I feel breaking even is good.
