So if a dealer say gives a MF of .001508 instead of .00067 per my last question - basically means they are just jacking that up to make money?

Also, is the zip where you reside (purchaser) or where the dealer resides who is selling the vehicle?

That, or they are quoting a higher MF until they run your credit.

Dealer ZIP determines numbers.

Money factors only go out to five digits, after the decimal point.

@Kyfdz - they gave me a "lease worksheet" and it definitely shows rate of .001508

Considering your location, I'll guess they are using a local credit union or bank, rather than Mazda Credit.

I've never seen a dealer markup the Mazda Credit special rate by an odd amount like that (or have a six digit MF)

And, used car prices are absolutely nuts at the moment - you should do some research to see what the market value is, before agreeing to the deal. If you can get $3000 from somewhere else, then you should be getting more of a discount on the new car.

Nuts as in high.

Take your car to a CarMax, or use Vroom or Carvana on-line and see if they will give you a quote to purchase it outright.

Dealers often play with the numbers, and not always to your advantage.

Ask yourself this - would they be willing to discount the car $2-3K from sticker if you didn't have a trade? If the answer is yes, then uplifting the value of the trade actually benefits them more than you.

MSRP - $23,200
Current discount - $400
Trade value - $3000
Net price - $19,800

If you can sell your car for $3000 to someone else, and get a bigger discount from sticker on the new car, then that's a win-win for you. (Net price of $19,800 without the trade, for example, plus the $3000 trade value = $16,800).

That's why many on-line articles recommend you treat the trade in as a separate transaction, and use price guides to figure out the best price for both the new car and the trade value.

As an example, 5+ years ago, I traded in my old SUV for the Outback that we currently own. Before I went to the dealer, I stopped at CarMax and got an offer - in writing - of what they would buy my car for. I then headed to the Subaru dealer, where I negotiated a reasonable discount on the new car.

When it came time for the dealer to value the trade in, they gave me a number that was $2000 less than CarMax. I pulled out the offer sheet from CarMax, and the dealer immediately matched it. Saved me $2000 on the overall deal.

Magically "the GM stepped in and was able to adjust it" when I arrived for paperwork.
