My daughter went to test drive a 2022 Civic Sonic Gray Pearl Sport Sedan today. She took some pictures of the window sticker to show me. The dealer (Honda dealer in Orange County, CA) listed the following items on the window sticker:
MSRP: $24,510
Protection Package: $899
Security System: $799
Tint: $499
HPD Package: $3,999
Mark-Up: $4,999
Total Price: $35,705
Are other people seeing these types of ridiculous prices. On Honda's website, the Protection Package is $285 and the HPD package is $1,418, so the mark up on these 2 items alone is over $3K. I get that demand is high and inventory is low, but a $10K mark up on a Honda Civic. I'm just wondering if these kinds or mark up are so high because it's Orange County, or if all Honda dealers are pushing these types of mark ups?

I think the only way to know is to shop more dealers. I certainly wouldn't bother with that dealer.

Hi,

We're interested in swapping our 2018 Honda Civic Hatchback EX for a 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback EX-L or Sport Touring CVT (given that they've omitted the drive modes, better looking styling/wheels, and the two best color choices from the middle EX-L tier specifically this gen - SGP & BB). We also have the option to either give the dealership the car back, which they say they'll give us ~3k towards the new car for, or buy the car for ~14k and sell for 24.2k, based on our most recent Edmunds/CarMax appraisal. This is up from 19.5k in July, and 22.6k last month.

It seems like it would be quite a it better to buy the car and then sell on the market now? My only concern is that once enough supply of the Hatchbacks is finally available for us to get one (even though they seem to be cropping up in the wild already this month), the price of our current car may come down as well. Ideally, we would want to find a new hatch as soon as possible, for a lease price equivalent to MSRP as Honda has listed.

We're also trying to figure out A) how to find a '22 Hatch in the Chicagoland area, and how to get a price locked in from a dealer, a price which is not insane. We went to our longtime dealer recently, and they told us they couldn't lease price a car for us, wanted a $500 deposit to "reserve" a similar one if it comes in (without knowing the price), and then estimated that the lease could be >$500 a month- after giving them our car with $3k positive equity. Should we try mass-emailing all of the local dealerships, and asking for their "internet sales manager" to try to price us?

That's pretty steep. We have no markups or add ons on any of our new Civics, or Hondas for that matter. From time to time we might put some side steps or window visors on a showroom car, but that's it.
