We’ve been much cooler here in South Florida than usual for this time of year. Many nights in the upper 40’s and days in the mid 60’s. We’ve experienced cold fronts coming through every 3-5 days. Inside my condo, the temperature hovers between 71 and 73 degrees. For me, that’s cold but I have not turned on the heat yet. Trying to deal with cool temps by sleeping with a heavy comforter.

Had heated steering wheel and heated seats turned on in the G90 quite a few mornings this month.

It's 35 degrees out and I thought that was warm considering what the temps have been here. We have the thermostat set to 68.

Colder than normal in Tampa area too.....highs in the mid 60s which is actually nice for outdoor tennis. I don't mind, back home near Toronto it will be -10 to -16F in a few days.
I wish those Canadians wouldn't send all that cold air down to Florida! :D
The native Floridians wear jackets and long pants when it is below 60F. The Snowbirds from Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and me don't wear all that until it is below 45F.

of all the things that you could do yourself that is worth spending money on to hire out, movers is way up at the top of the list. Watching those guys empty out our house and move it all into the new one, I would have paid double if that is what it took.

Many years ago, I moved myself a few times. Halfway through the job, I'd have paid double the highest quote just for someone to finish the job for me. Never again (and now I'm too old to risk it).

When I leave this place or just choose to get rid of the convertible sofa, it's going to the first person on Nextdoor who shows up to haul it away for free. That's how I divested myself of my last dining room table - posted on Nextdoor for free with the caveat that I will provide no labor assistance to get it all down the stairs. It was still out of my house within an hour.
I put all sorts off junk at the end of my driveway with a “free” sign and it’s gone before I walk back to the house. Everything from old tires to scrap metal. I actually sold an old car to a guy who had been scrapping my junk for years. He made a point of driving by on his way to work.

@oldfarmer50, Your Enterprise location is in the Cold North:

I went by the airport earlier this week and it was a cold morning, maybe 10 deg F. The Enterprise working lot is visible from the road. They had around 30 or more cars sitting with the emergency flashers operating on most of them. Is that something they do when they start them to warm them up, idle them to charge the batteries, getting ready to move them from the out lot to the parking area close to the airport doors. I think they have parking space in the parking garage that's next to the airport exit doors.

Why would they leave the parking lights flashing on emergency? IS that a way of being sure no one forgets they are idling there? It just looked so odd with most of the cars sitting flashing out of sequence.

I am sure the Florida folks aren't expecting sympathy on the chills from us hardy Northern folks. We've had one big snow of about 8 inches and 4 periods of lower teen nights for a couple of nights in a row and two nights in the 5 deg F range.

Some winters have been much colder with lower lows and bitter wind and drifting snow, but I don't wish the cold normal Artic blasts with the jet stream shifts onto anyone below Georgia.

Stay warm and thank goodness for heated seats and remote start. I wonder if I can get an aftermarket kit for a heated steering wheel AND a backup camera for the Cruze. Might even have one for a 2014 Mercedes as well. :) Don't know how much longer it's going to be with me. Don't really have a replacement in mind.

We moved in 2020 and then moved our summer place in 2021. The next move I suspect we make will be downsizing to one bigger house at the shore.

I don’t see us ever selling our current condo there, I’d rent it. $3500+ per week would be hard to pass up.

We don’t rent it right now, but our end goal is to live down there year round. We would want something bigger though. It wouldn’t make any sense to sell it when weekly rentals and an off season full time tenant would more than cover the costs. Our mortgage there is very reasonable and somehow the taxes are low for NJ (about a third of what I pay on my primary).

SH was less in taxes than my old house that was worth 1/4 of a shore place. The advantage of having almost no kids to put in school down there.

They were probably defrosting them if it was that cold. Also possible the cleaners were warming them up so that they could spray cleaner on the glass without it freezing up.

We do that to get the frost off the windshields so we can drive them to the airport garage. Don’t know about the flashers though. Way back when, they used to leave them running in the parking garage with the flashers on so we knew which ones to take but that practice ended when some low lives decided that was a supermarket of cars to be stolen.

That is EXACTLY where I live! Except that it is a giant, unreliable freezer. My wife and I bought a large box of frozen food for my son over the holidays, and there wasn't enough room in our freezer, so we had him put it in the shed. Then, last Sunday, the temperature warmed up to nearly 45F, and we had to rush out there to rescue it before it thawed!

As I told them, our winters are not dissimilar to theirs. It's rainy, cold and damp there just like it is in Southern OH, Northern KY. One year, they actually had snow.

The big difference was I didn't have to pay CA prices, fight CA traffic, pay CA taxes. Yeah, they had the Pacific. But, it's not like it was crystal clear blue like the Caribbean (which I could fly to in a couple of hours).

So, the forecasts for the upcoming week here in the northeast are grim, not because of storms but because of scary cold for a couple of days. I hate that. Makes one want to flee to warmer climes…

But then, I’ve been watching some of the aftermath of the Palisades fire. Aside from innumerable buildings reduced to ash, with steel beams twisted like pretzels, the damage to utility infrastructure is enormous. One of the video bloggers has done great work in riding around on his E-bike, which combined with a Press credential gives him access to areas barred to the public, to see the work crews are doing. Along the stretch of the PCH that burned, all of the 50’ utility poles are being replaced and all new cabling needs to be strung to provide temporary power and communications. There is an army of workers and equipment from SoCal Edison, SoCal Gas, Spectrum, Frontier Communications and many subcontractors trying to restore service not so much to those living in the area of destruction because there aren’t many left there because there is little to go back to. But the surviving areas on either end are undoubtedly affected too. The devastation is unreal. It’s also sad to see the burned-out but recognizable hulks of vehicles left behind, lots of Porsches, BMWs, Benzes and the like. Naturally convertibles did not do well but nothing got a free pass in those conditions. Just mind-boggling.

Here’s the YT account with a bunch of videos of the aftermath: https://youtube.com/@santamonicacloseup?si=Nft6ipFACxZdlH8f

    Yes.
And I am suffering the consequences of trying to get things done outside prior. Not that I did anything strenuous, mind you. I threw out my lower back quite badly last night by simply bending over outside as I tried to set the ozone machine thingy in the Suzuki. My ability to walk is now greatly diminished and I'm isolated to the couch for the near future.

Are there any good alternative for friends who overpaid for a Ford Ecosport new in 2022 at a Ford store without paying much attention to the actual value of the vehicle they were paying and the loan rate. They can't afford to pay the loan now with changed circumstances in their income. They're in their 70s.

The car is worth far below the loan owed. They are planning to turn the car back to Ford loan division, who will sell it at a low value I suppose and then the friends will be owing the difference.

Is there any way to get rid of the car to lose a minimum amount of money?

I hope you’re back to your old self quickly.

Talk about getting older, lately every time I start to bend over to pick something up from the floor I keep hearing this voice in my head saying ‘don’t do that, you know you’re supposed to bend at the knees when you want to pick anything up off the floor’. Then I hear this other voice that says ‘your knees don’t work like they used to’. So, I just leave it there hoping my anti-gravity machine comes along.

Believe me, I know what you mean. :'(

    @imidazol97,
Don't know what trim they have or mileage or how much they owe but Carvana has a 2022 SE with 17K miles on it for sale for 20,590.
    Carmax has 5 22 SE's for sale between 20 and 21K.

I believe friend said the price was up around $30K new for the Titanium model with lots of bells and whistles. I believe he mentioned the interest rate was 10% area. Payments are in the $600/mo range.
No mention of how many years of payments he'd agreed to.

He now realizes he was probably taken by the salesman on the pricing as well as on interest rate, although the friends' credit likely was not great.

I'm guessing with typical years of payments, and 10% interest that $3000 might have been paid off? So $27000 owed? I'm guessing without any calculations here. So the car is worth $20K and FoMoCo likely will sell it for much less than that in a friendly sale to a buyer...

Only thing worse would have been if he'd bought an EV which has gone down in value new and used.

If they "give it back" as a voluntary repo, Ford will sell the vehicle at auction and dun them for the difference between what they got at auction and what they owed on the car. They may be able to get more than auction value for it at CarMax, Carvana, or by getting a buy bid from a local dealer, but they'd have to come up with the additional funds to pay off the loan. I'd consider doing that if they have another form of credit available and don't want to tank their credit score.

not really any good options. If they still need a car and would have to replace it anyway, the best option might be to figure out a way to come up with the additional amount per month. Maybe they can refinance? But guessing they could have qualification issues. If they do need wheels, the classic move was to find some car that nobody likes that has a huge lease support on it, and bury the NE into that.

only other logical option is to find enough money to make up for the negative equity, and sell it for the best deal they can get.

Turning it back in seems like the worst idea, ever.

They should call the bank, and tell them they can't make the payments, and ask if they have some sort of refinance program. Probably not, but it can't hurt. Like the others, I assume their credit is terrible.

They'd have been better off with an EV. They bought the crappiest car possible. And, the absolute slowest new car available that year.

Looked up some Ecosport Ti's and they don't seem to be worth any more than an SE.
Titanium MSRP was about 30K, so resale doesn't seem too bad. Not sure why.
After went a bit down the Mustang rabbit hole.
Price on this 2012 Boss 302 is pretty insane.

I don't think I would pay the huge premium for one of the special versions like that if I wanted a Mustang. The regular GT already has more power and speed than I would ever be able to use so might as well save the money, and do a few more budget friendly upgrades (a nice stripe package, maybe wheels. Or new seats!)

The EcoSport is/was a second car for the teenager now working at a growing Sheetz-like service plaza type place to drive. But teenager doesn't want to drive... Odd for a teenager.
So get rid of the $600 payment.
    Loan company is FoMoCo credit.
I think they're hoist on the pitard.

BTW, my advice for a second car to purchase for the new driver just like their oldest son when he was a new driver was a used Crown Vic, LeSabre, Hyundai several years old. Not buying a new car.

Where do you live man, in a giant freezer? :p

    Where are you.....Alaska?

A 3 year old car is going to lose about 1/2 the original cost if selling to a dealer. If they can sell it privately they might lose 1/3rd. There is no way they should have bought a new car for a kid to drive to work.....and they bought when prices were very high.
It is too bad they didn't buy a used car which is all they needed considering their situation and what the car was going to be used for. My sister-in-laws 2008 Impala with 50k miles for $5000 would have been perfect.

Can they roll the negative equity into something else? I know that won’t solve the problem completely but it might keep the wolf away from the door for awhile.

Are they healthy enough to get part time jobs to boost their income by $600/mo.? One or two days at a grocery store would be all it takes.

is the teenager a grandkid? Which would add another dynamic (or a generation!)

given this extra info, what do the owners drive themselves? Is that something they could sell instead, and keep the Ecosport (use the proceeds of the other sale to pay down the loan?)
