There is one traditional mall in Greater Cincinnati that reminds you of the glory days. And, that's it. The other half dozen have either died, or are dying. The outdoor "lifestyle" centers are the only other ones doing halfway well.

Kenwood Towne Center is the only good one.
    Macy's
    Dillards
    Nordstrom
    Apple Store

    Plus, a whole lot more.

Just for the fun of it I tried checking the price of the 2014 C250, 48000 miles on it. It is pretty good, just enter the VIN number and up pops a picture of my car......they even have the right color though I think all of the Sport models were red.
Anyway, they'll give me $7,010 for a car that looks brand new and runs perfectly fine.
To get a decent used car with less than 50000 miles on it I'll probably have to spend $20k or $25k to buy it. I think I'll stick with what I have got!

    * Just checked.....to buy one would cost about $12000, and they have more miles on them.
    * I know...they have to make a profit and all that, but if there is any chance to sell privately it is definitely the way to go. And low mileage, good condition doesn't get you much more for a trade-in.

We have two malls still going pretty well here in South Jersey. We have four but the other two are dismal. At one time they were all busy.

    Malls? Pshaw.

We have an enclosed “retail resort” by our house.

    Apple Store
    Cheesecake Factory

Not sure if the Macys is still open.

malls had their time, and that time passed. nature of capitalism. If you can remember when they first became popular, it was all doom and gloom how they were destroying the local mom and pop shops, 5 and 10, etc. And the smaller department stores, which also replaced local shops. Big box outdoor centers seem to be doing OK for now.

we don't really like online shopping for a lot of stuff (clothes in particular) but you get stuck with it because there is almost no place to actually look at and try on clothes.

after being out yesterday (about a 40 mile RT) on sloppy and heavily salted roads, the Acura was a mess. crap all over the sides, and I shudder to think what the underside looked like. So went out today and stopped at the touchless to at least get the underside sprayed (it has a really nice undercarriage spray set-up). And surprisingly the sides got fully cleaned. So not it does not bother me thinking of it out there rotting away.

But man, every car wash had big lines. Making some serious money at $20 a pop.

if there is a car wash I am willing to take my car into that has a legit underneath wash for anything close to that price around here I have not found it. Guess I should just look for the one with the really long line!

what I actually want, and it pretty rare up here, is a DIY one. I am fine getting down on the ground to shove the wand under the car in an emergency. My usual plan is avoid driving when the roads are wet and salty, and any time we have a rare day that it cracks 40, drag the hose out and do it on the driveway.

It’s funny but way back when, when I was a kid on a very small town, there were no malls or any chain stores. But we did have online shopping. It was called the Sears and Penney’s catalogs. The more things change . . .

Me too. For what little I buy. I wear t-shirts in the summer and, since we have season baseball tickets, I usually wear the ones they give away. In the winter I have a sweatshirt over top.

I get my Levis at Penney's and used to get my sneakers there until they quit selling the brand I liked for working in.

That's what I said to Mrs. venture because she was lamenting the condition of the mall (I almost said whining about it). That the malls closed all the downtown stores so online shopping is killing the malls. It's just evolution.

    She still didn't like it.

Malls - our "in danger of dying" mall in St. Matthews was propped up by the Apple Store for years, and now has a Top Golf. I think they'll make it.

@qbrozen - here's a video from Technology Connections on YouTube that goes into the inner workings of a jukebox. I'm surprised mechanical things worked as reliably as they did. There's also a follow up video where he discusses the selection accumulator.

We have two large malls locally. One seems to be doing well after repositioning itself as a high-end “fashion” mall. My retiree group has a monthly coffee meetup there and I am always impressed at how busy it is, mostly young trendies. The other, very close to my house, also seems to be doing mostly OK now after a drawn-out renovation. It still has some empty spaces but the handful of times I’ve visited over the last year it seemed busy as well.

On the flip side: down the hill from my place is the first shopping center ever built here, dating from 1955. I remember my parents taking me there when I was a kid. It began as the old style mall with storefronts opening onto an open-air walkway under an overhang. Later on it got enclosed, then even later that got removed and it reverted back. As the years went on the quality of retailers declined, but it was handy to me for its grocery store, pharmacy and my dentist. Last year they announced plans to tear it down except for the grocery and pharmacy and to use the land for 4 tall residential towers. They have done the demo and I presume construction will start soon.

Sure, but what they are talking about is along the lines of “I’m getting 120 fps and want 150.”

    Movies are like 60 fps.

Movies are 24, the human eye is between 30 and 60. So if your watching something at 120 fps you won't see between 50 and 75% of the frames.

OK, now we sort of have a limit on what the human eye can see. With all this interest in audio, I am wondering if there is some sort of similar limit on what the human ear can hear...

not too long ago they did a big refresh on the Moorestown mall and it was very nice, pretty upscale, and busy. Not sure what happened to take it down so fast. They did build a lot of other retail and restaurants surrounding it.

We also have two large malls where I live. The first was built in 1966 on a road that at the time was all farm land. Well, its presence spurred such growth along that road that most of the farmers retired as millionaires. It had fallen on hard times but after Sears failed they converted it into a hybrid inside/outside mall with various trendy stores having entrances directly from the parking lot. I was at L.L. Bean exchanging a coat the other day and business seemed to be booming.

The other mall a few miles away was the ultimate mega mall that eclipsed the first one. It was the place to be for trendy shoppers until recently when it became a hang out for teen gangs with the accompanying fights and shootings. That, plus uncontrolled shoplifting has degraded many malls and retail in general here in NY.

I’m impressed that you and your retiree buddies hang out at such upscale locations. The codgers I associate with gather at the local convenience store that has a couple of booths.

In my experience, the online offers are rarely decent for a non-mainstream vehicle. It's a good way to quickly divest one's self of a Camry, Elantra, CR-V, etc., but not great if you've got a vehicle they're not sure if they can sell in a week. Every once in awhile, I check the value/offer for my Soul. It's often only a few grand below what I paid for it in 2020 - but then again, I bought at the bottom of the market, right before used car prices soared.

That place is always packed. Really swimming upstream given the general mall trend these days. I was in the Nordstroms over the Holidays. You would have thought they were giving away gold bricks.

Then again, there's a CONTAINER STORE just outside the mall in a stand alone structure. Just heard they were in the throes of bankruptcy, recently.

No matter where I've traveled, no matter the city, the Kenwood Mall is something of an outlier and a phenomena in its own right. Go figure!

Of course, as @kyfdx points out, there's an Apple Store, Cheesecake Factory and a Lego store there, too. Coincidence that those stores seem to populate the most popular malls? ;)

Last spring my daughter asked us to come down to Albany to babysit for our 1.5 year old grandchild for a couple of days. She works from home and her apartment is small so we have to stay in a motel. We needed activities to do, so she directed us to a decrepit mall that had a kid centric aquarium in it where stores used to be. I think it maybe was in Schenectady? BTW, it was a pretty bad aquarium. But we we did walk around what was left of the mall and it could have been a set for an apocalyptic movie set!

J&S is still around? I used to look at their listings many years ago. And did get the impression they were a touch on the iffy side. Did not know they did YouTube and showed customers (why an actual customer would want to do that is a mystery so maybe they are fictional?).

IIRC they had 5 locations scattered around. I think IV was not far from me in. Mount holly.

This is a real throwback to the glory days of malls in the 1980s, discussing the Oak Park Mall in Kansas. Back then instead of gangs and shootings the biggest problems seemed to be teens hanging around the mall to smoke cigarettes and pick up members of the opposite sex. They even talk to the old farmer who sold the developer the property.

I'm missing something? I see these 20 somethings coming in to buy Cyber Trucks, BMW Ms, Benz G Wagons, etc. Inheritance? Drug Dealers? I saw one guy in his 20s being quoted a $1,700/month car payment and he didn't even flinch.

Have salaries bumped that much? Maybe I need to "un-retire"!

I watch the guy George and his live negotiation videos. I like him. The rest of his crew seems like a bunch of shady characters.

Yes. I watch his TikTok and sometimes comment. It is a bit risky, IMHO, showing the negotiations and then posting them for sale on his website for all to see the markup. And I have grown weary of some of his schtick such as his ocd about asking if EVERY car still has catylytics and what the original sticker price is, as if the latter means anything for resale.

George is not the original owner, AFAIK. I believe he took it over from his dad, but don’t quote me on that.

I have had both good and bad experiences there. Bought my 350z there way back when. My other visits were busts. I’d say at least 5-6 other visits over the years. I recall a Sentra manual that was way overpriced and they didn’t want to budge, and some kind of SUV for the wife that had too many issues. I know there were others but can’t recall details.

I love when he asks if the cars have cats! I think he has taken it over from his Dad.

Stick your head underneath if you want to know. If it was me, I would shrug my shoulders and ask “what’s a cat?”

I would agree, and I compared what buyers were asking for a 2014 Camry. They are asking $13000 for 2014 Camrys, with mileage between 80000 and 120000.
Our 2014 MB C250 with 48000 miles on it I can't find, but ones with 70000 to 80000 are asking $12000.
The Toyota would be more reliable, but, I'd take the MB any time over boring.
The thing is they'll sell a Toyota, Honda, Hyundai a lot faster than the much less popular car, and mileage isn't much of a factor.

I must be missing something. I mentioned previously I watch the YouTube channel for J&S AutoHaus in NJ. Feel like they're a little sleazy, but I watch anyway.

    Here’s how they do it:

I often mention with pride how the car I bought for my son in 2020 still sells for about what we paid back then.

I have seen those videos before. I really can't see how people can get that deep underwater on a car. Rule number 1 never trade in a car that you have negative equity on. But then again like everyone here i have some common sense.
