    Happy New Year everyone!
First post on the internet for 2011 :)
First trading day of the year, and everything seems to be heading in the right direction.
QLIK : Sold all position at 28.50, and wait for a re-entry opportunity around 22-23. Sales partner manager at the company scrambling to close contracts, probably to make y/e bonuses.
Ford: is now trading above my entry price, and hopefully going higher as TM has predicted.
US Banks: I am keeping my fingers crossed that they will continue to pile on the good news, so that the share prices would push the DOW up a lot higher.
AAPL: took a dip of only 50 shares and sold some put options at 321.
    Cheers

Good to hear from you! I also am now out of QLIK. It was an awesome ride (all three times!). Thank you (once again).

Ford has been awesome and will also be terrific in the long run. Great company with great products and genius CEO. Apple is also a great company with great products and overflowing with geniuses. Hard to resist companies like that.

BTW, I hit a grand slam with CMG last year and I still own quite a bit.

Love the market action today, nicely out of the gate for 2011... going to be a great year!

Great to hear from you GS. My wife and I were driving home to central IA all day today from Belleville, MI. I just saw your post. Otherwise I would have sold my remaining shares of QLIK. Unfortunately, I sold about half of the shares at about $23 or so about a couple weeks ago. Hopefully, I will be able to sell the rest of the shares at a good price tomorrow morning.

As I stated on numerous occasions, I am very optimistic about th stock market in general this year. AAPL in particular, has been awesome for me.

I wonder where a good friend Len has been the past several weeks.
  • cyclone4cyclone4 Member Posts: 2,302
The deed is done. I sold my remaining shares of QLIK. 500 were sold at 28.55 and 250 at 28.46. So GS, it's all up to you my friend, to let us know when to jump in again. Obviously, your present thinking is that it will sell off to the $22-23 area. If you're wrong, TM and I will be flying to Toronto to smack you around :D . Seriously, I thank you very much for this very profitable, awesome trade. You are totally responsible for it.

Charlie, I think QLIK will fluctuate quite a bit more before getting snatched up by someone at 30 or higher.

Had my first hospital stay of my life on Christmas - New Years week. Came down with type II diabetes and my body went into a sugar shock and had a minor effect on my kidneys. Without going into details the kidneys are again functioning normally, my sugar is stabilized and I'm back to 100% of myself. Did not maneuver any investments around beforehand so the nice gains on Wall Street were all realized here and I'm bigger than ever on Citi and still love Apple. My own business did very well and though I got sick of the Lexius jingle, the MB car on the driveway Christmas present and the many other auto commercials that inundated us all through the holidays, the auto business on TV is an important underlier of the strength of clients and how well we do and it's bounceback was partially responsible for a record profit year for us.

Re the blizzard - suffice it to say it was the most incredible snowfall rates I've ever seen anywhere and I've been in the mountains and in lake effect bands. Snowed here for hours at 3-4" an hour plus many many hours at 1-3" rates. Had vivid lightning, loud thunder and 50-60mph winds. Roads, I'm talking key local highways were impassable for days with 10' drifts. We literrally could not see 50 feet in front of us durng peak snows and it was life threatening to be outside. I actually couldn't even get to the hosptal and waited a day and half for someone to clear out my driveway. Even now we only have a small clearing on our street to reach the driveway as this is the thinnest I've ever seen our street cleared. We have a very wide cul-de-sac that currently only allows cars in one direction and certainly no one can park on the street. There's talk of more snow tomorrow (minor) and then another possible big one mid next week.

Sidebar to Charlie - but the last 5 snowstorms in this area of NJ are an incredible 22", 17", 24", 14" and now 30". Some areas nearby had 34" of snow and Brick NJ, where my mother lives, tied the all time NJ record of 34" in the past storm. The average snowfall in Monmouth county ranged from 25-34" of snow in this storm. Simply amazing as it all fell in 18 hours.

Len... Sorry to learn that you have become a diabetic, but VERY relieved to know that you are back to 100%! I guess your holidays were compromised, but you are blessed to be OK after your ordeal. Being restored to full health isn't such a bad Christmas gift, if you think about it.

FWIW, My brother-in-law, and his son are both diabetics, and they lead normal lives, for the most part, although my brother-in-law has had some issues with his eyes recently, due to the disease.

My son recently did an international commercial for Medtronics... a multi-billion dollar medical device company that does about 12 billion dollars in sales every year. He played the role of an athletic kid with diabetes, wearing a brand new generation small insulin pump... this product is about to be released worldwide.

I am glad the Christmas car ads are over. I really dislike them.

Enjoy that snow! LOL. It's beautiful. But quite the challenge.

Re: the markets... I expect a good year, but IMHO, there is going to be a correction before too long. Be prepared to buy when it's over.

I'm sorry to hear about your coming down the Type II. It is controllable with certain diets and exercise. Do lots of reading about diets and eating patterns. My wife has Type II. Also suggest watching kidneys and watching for other after effects.

I can't do much about the snow. The forcast due to el ninja patterns is less than normal for rest of winter in midwest and much more snow along the coast and Northeast than average.

Holy cow Len! I had a concerned feeling something had indeed happened to you and that is why we had not heard from you for so long. I am very happy to hear that you are now back to 100%.

My Christmas could not have gone much better since for a Christmas present my wife and I have a new granddaughter. She was born on Dec. 22. My wife and I were there for over 2 weeks.

That was a historic blizzard to say the least. I thought you might get as much as 18 inches with incredible drifts, but as it turned out it was almost twice that much. Truly AMAZING. There is potential for something big for about Tuesday night/Wednesday, but it is too early to say for sure. The pattern looks colder than normal for January. This is NOT the typical strong La Nina winter in the U.S. With strong La Nina it is suppose to be nice and warm in the Southeast and moderate in the Midwest and Northeast. Other parts of the world are indeed having a La Nina pattern. For example, Argentina is having a drought that is affecting the bean and corn crops like it is suppose to. The culprit here in the States I believe is an extremely negative Arctic Oscillation Index and this is defying La Nina. The very negative AO is forcing everything much further south and allows for the cold air masses from western Canada to spread rapidly toward the Midwest and Southeast in particular. New York will probably end up the month about 2.5 degrees colder than normal. But places like Chicago and Atlanta will be considerably colder with respect to normal. Eventually with this pattern, you will get blitzed again. It is just a matter of time.

The market has obviously been acting great and I remain very optimistic for this year and likely beyond. The economy is gradually improving as predicted. The doom and gloom boys of the past couple years are eating crow. The market has rallied a lot and some sort of correction is possible in the very near future, but it will be a buying opportunity. AAPL has been very good to me as have some other stocks. I believe Apple's quarterly earnings come out on the 24th of this month. I may take some profits just prior to the report and hope for a decent sell-off to buy it cheaper. I'm sure it is headed to at least $400. It's interesting that you mentioned C. I bought an additional 1000 shares this morning as it crossed the $5.00 barrier.

    Charlie,

It was the snowfall rates during that blizzard that were simply amazing. If I didn't see them I wouldn't believe it. But if you were out Sunday evening in this area for 3 hours or so you had cloud-to-ground strikable lightning in places (so tremendous convective snow), booming shot-gun like thunder, 50mph gusts, 23 degree temps and no visibility and your car dealt with nearly a foot of fresh snow already falling on 10" of snow that had accumulated earlier that day. That is why all the highways got clogged and needed rescue attempts. I've seen some mighty great snowstorms here and the closest any of them came to this intensity was Feb 1983 when about 20" fell in a short period, also with a lot of bad lightning. But this was more intense, windier and longer lasting. The blizzard of 96 here was in the same snowfall range as this but was spread out over 30 hours, so it never reached this level of hourly rates.

Re the market - I'm all on board with you guys and am now expecting a ride to 13,000- 13,500 by late year.

I liked the version from the local forcasters a couple months back of less than typical precipiation and average or warmer temps for Ohio. You're saying it will be colder. What about the precipitation?

You're saying it will be colder. What about the precipitation?

Precipitation is tougher to predict, but my feeling is that there will be heavier than normal snows in your area. Typically, colder than normal also results in snowier than normal. However, this colder pattern could easily break in February. I was just concentrating in January on my post above.

I have a feeling that today is the start of a correction. The jobs number was a little bearish. Even though the unemployment rate was friendly, the market is looking for an excuse to have a correction. It has gone up too much too fast. Even though I smell a correction, I am going to ride it out and add to my stocks at a certain point. The only stock I dumped was QlIK almost on the high the other day (Thanks to GS).
  • tagmantagman Member Posts: 8,441
    Charlie,

I posted a couple of days ago that I felt a correction was coming near term. I didn't hear from you about that, but now I see that you agree with me. Whether or not today is the start is to be seen, but nonetheless it is inevitable, as the market has indeed gotten ahead of itself.

I haven't decided whether or not I will ride it out.... but probably will.

Yes you did hear from me Tag. Look at post #2596 (last paragraph) when I was responding to Len's illness among other things. I agreed with you. Well, as it turns out, today turned out almost flat so maybe today was not the start of a correction. I see AAPL closed another $2.39 higher.

BTW, my son and his wife along with their 8 month old twin little girls live in Seattle.

As far as snow is concerned for Seattle, it will be touch and go for the next 8-10 days. It will be close calls between cold rains or wet snows. But, I do think that you will see some accumulating snow on a couple of occasions next week. It will warm up quite a bit the following week so that any precipitation that falls after at that time will be rain.

Good to know. I do watch the NWS forecast discussions - they are saying there is a chance of a good snow here beginning Wednesday or so, but the models are not consistent. Of course, here a big snow is one that is on the ground for more than 3 days. More than a few inches will be enough to give me a snow day...I won't complain :shades:

Glad you are OK now. Stay healthy. We need you around here!

RE the blizzard : I went out at 7:30PM to blow off the DW and I've never experienced this level of intensity. I am 5 miles from you and your illustrations are noted and confirmed on my side of town. I have an 11hp Ariens and the thing was perfect as I tuned it and adjusted the clutch/trans/linkage in July. I am a nut about snow blowers because they save your back!! I cleared again at 9:00 AM Monday but the town did not plow out my CDS until 2:00 PM Monday. Didn't make a hill of beans difference as no one was going anywhere. Funny how people insist on driving in a forecasted 2 ft. bizzard that was well publicized. Kind of like investing into a thin-walled overextended market bubble like DOT COM, Real Estate and the Madoff sure thing!

Anyway, since I do not actively trade, if I might add a great investment to this forum although quite boring, try IBM. Big Blue is a trooper but since my family is employed there, it was easier for us. My wife still has shares and she insists it will go to 200!! She knows better than me as I sold at 106 a few years back and I thought I was a genius. Go figure! She bought most of her shares when she worked there in the '90's for under $90 with the employee discount.

Anyway, looks like APPL and Goog will do well into 2011 but the turtle is IBM on the tech side. Slow but steady.

Just take care of yourself, watch your diet and you will be fine. I was diagnosed with type II diabetes about 8 years ago at age 60 and so far have had few ill effects and very few, if any, changes to my lifestyle.

I have never been overweight and I have always been very active and gotten a lot of exercise. Diabetes just seems to run in my family.

Of course there is a ton of information on the internet but if you have any questions I will try to answer them.

My stepfather was 70 when they finally diagnosed him with type 2 diabetes. The VA kept treating him for heart problems and he did not get better. A small town doctor in Oregon where he moved after my mom died found his problem. Amazing how so many doctors cannot diagnose what is wrong with people. He went on to have a great life remarried and lived to 85 out hunting with his brother till his last year. He was not overweight either. That seems to be the only people they test for diabetes. His big problem was that big bowl of ice cream every night before bed. Had to cut that out.

    ...get ready...Charlie is onto something....

ANOTHER WINTER WEATHER EVENT IS LIKELY ON TUESDAY INTO WEDNESDAY. DOUBLE BARREL LOW PRESSURE SYSTEMS WILL AFFECT THE REGION. THE SOONER THEY CAN CONSOLIDATE, INTENSIFY AND THE EVENTUAL TRACK WILL HAVE A BEARING AS TO HOW MAJOR THIS EVENT WILL BE. ALSO IF THE COASTAL LOW TRACKS CLOSE ENOUGH TO THE COAST, SOME MIXED PRECIPITATION COULD ALSO OCCUR NEAR THE COAST. PLEASE LOOK FOR UPDATES IN THE DAYS AHEAD.

This is for Central NJ as of this posting.

The market will no doubt be kinder than the weather at the moment...

Here is the very latest for you folks living in the Megalopolis. There will indeed be another storm affecting you later tomorrow into early Wednesday. It looks as if the big coastal Cities from New York south will get about 4-8 inches. New York City itself will likely get about 8 inches. The Boston/Providence area will probably end up with a foot or a little more. The system will intensify a lot once it reaches a point east of the NJ coast and tracks to just east of Nantucket Island. Therefore the heaviest snows will be across southeast New England.

    Friends...

We are off to a great start this new year. There's a consensus here that this year will be terrific for equities. There is also some consensus that a correction is likely in the near future.

I want to offer a word of caution to those of us that are heavily invested in bonds. IMO, it seems likely that bond values could start a protracted process of devaluation. The upside to this would be increasing percentage returns, but values could take a significant and progressively worsening hit.

All that aside... I am interested in learning and discussing our individual strategies and goals and overall outlook for this year, 2011. IMO, we can collectively potentially improve our investment returns by such a discussion.

Agree on stock markets would do well, especially big banks. I am heavily invested in them and so far so good. I am hoping to double the size of my investment portfolio this year :surprise:
I will be watching for re-entry point in QLIK.
  • cyclone4cyclone4 Member Posts: 2,302
I have never messed around with bonds much in the past and I certainly have zero interest in this sort of investment now.

I plan to continue trading commodities and of course I am pretty heavily (for me anyway) invested in stocks at this time and I plan to "ride the train" to over 13,000 on the Dow this year. I would not be surprised at all if we reach new all time highs on the Dow in the next year or so. And yes, as TM has stated (and I agree), a correction of some sort is possible if not likely in the near future. But that will only serve as a buying opportunity.

GS has served this forum generously with that QLIK tip. Always thankful for that. I profited thousands that I would not have otherwise profited.

LOL. Yeah... it's pitiful just how poor the return is on money market accounts, CDs, and bonds. The problem with bonds that are now in anyone's portfolio is that as current interest rates increase, the value of those pre-existing bonds declines... thus reducing the value of the portfolio.

I hold about 25% of my overall portfolio in bonds. That's not very much, but I am considering reducing that percentage to around 10% - 20% for this calendar year, and maybe longer... because I truly expect this to be a great year for equities.

I am expecting at least 20% - 25% return on equities for this calendar year.

Again... once current interest rates start their ascention, be very cautious on current bond's valuations.

    0% in bonds...

I know I could have made money on them at certain times.... but, every time I look, I just can't make a case for them...

I'm about 97% in equities.... I just ride out the ups and downs... overall, I'm pretty happy with it... It helps that I don't depend on my investments for income... yet...

Yeah... I pounded the table recommending Ford waaaay back in time. And I also did so on Citigroup, which has finally started to do exactly what I expected. My only concern with Citi was that the government didn't sell their shares according to their schedule, so I finally ditched it. I should have stuck to my own convictions and been more patient... I would have made a ton of money. But Ford (and other stocks) has made up for it. It has been an awesome investment. I think it still is, but not at the same speed it was.

I did, however, recently purchase some Citi once again, along with Bank of America and Wells Fargo Bank.

BTW, at this very moment ARMH is giving up about half of yesterday's huge 13% gains... so instead of taking profits (as many are today), I am buying more at this dip. It's hard to put a target on this stock because it is so driven by the overall demand for microprocessors, yet consider that ARM Holdings is the world's leading semiconductor intellectual property, and also consider the massive momentum in the mobile information revolution that is taking place. This explosion in mobile information technology still has monstrous upside ahead. May I suggest that you do a little homework on ARMH?... you might agree with me that it is a good stock to hold (and keep a watchful eye on) over the next several years.

BTW, I am very glad that my prior recommendations for Ford has worked out for you so well. likewise, your recommendation for QLIK was good for me, so it seems that we have really been helpful to each other. (Sooooo cool!) I sincerely hope that you and I continue to assist one another in making profitable investment choices. Afterall, I am honestly looking forward to the day you own your new Lexus supercar (or Porsche... or BOTH). ;)

TM, sadly I had purchased ARMH a long time ago. I made some profit and got out so that I had more cash to buy more AAPL. I should not have gotten out. I am not sure if I should jump in now.

BTW, I also bought a 1000 shares of more C earlier this week or late last week (don't remember the exact timing). I paid $5.

IMO, jump in mildly, at a big dip. But don't take any money out of AAPL.

Yesterday alone, I made 13% on ARMH. Today, while it was down over 6%, I bought more. Now the stock has gone back up, so I am up another 6% on today's purchase, at this moment. In just two days, that's freakin incredible!!

Don't worry! There is no way in hell I am getting out of even 1 share of my AAPL at this time. I might sell a little on the 23rd (day before the earnings report).
