"Just picked up a message on my mobile (cell) phone. Would I like the local dealer to drop around an Outback H6 to try? What do you think?"

    --

    Umm, YES!!!!!!!!!!!

If you get to keep the H6 after dropping it off, sure why not. Otherwise, sure why not. ;-)

Too bad they don't do that type of testing here in the States. I would be forced to volunteer:-)

Graham- Go for it, and let us know your opinion.

I'd do a quick powertrain swap for Sandy. You think they'd notice? LOL

OK, we were talking mileage in the Forester thread, and I figured I'd share my hot streak - I've had 8 tanks in a row with 26 mpg or better from Sandy! :-)

I can't even say that about my Miata! Who says AWD can't be efficient?

    Graham,

That would be a no-brainer yes for me! If you do go, take some photos with a digicam and share, if possible!

Yup, 2 more WRXs stolen in NNJ yesterday, got the call 10 minutes after they were taken from a corporate lot in NNJ (Morristown to boot), they made a B-line to Irvington/Newark. Both are total losses as they were crashed and burned!

    :(

Makes me sick. Sorry to hear that.

When are the cops gonna bust these guys? They burned them? What a waste...

  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Cops actually chased em since it was reported like 10 min after they were stolen. AZP is diligently working on a fuel-cutoff switch program for these cars. The need is real now, in our community.

No wonder insurance is so high in NJ. Any thefts in the DC area reported?

with all this talk of theft. I live and work in Northern NJ and I had my WRX Wagon parked in a hotel lot in Morristown yesterday. I kept thinking about someone boosting her and was very happy to return to find her unmolested. To hear two were recently snatched from the area makes me a bit paranoid....

    Thanks for the update!

That's a good idea; I pulled the fuel-pump fuse recently in my Outback to de-pressurize the fuel system before changing the filter, and the engine only ran for 2-3 secs tops.

Can you just wire something inline with the fuel pump fuse under the dash?

For people with MT cars, you can also wire a real simple starter kill by tapping into the switch on the clutch pedal. Won't prevent pop-starting, however.

You could get a double-pole switch and do the starter cutoff -and- the fuel pump cutoff. That would be cool. On a first pass, it would eliminate the thieves who were too dumb or too rushed to pop-start.

In some cases, they're using other cars to push the car being stolen.

Made an appointment this morning to give Pebbles a security system overhaul. I'm retiring the OEM security - way too easy. The new system will have practically everything on my wish list except the plated steering wheel airbag.

Won't be crazy hard to override, but it will stop the thieves who don't know better, aren't professionals, etc. The ones being jacked are being joy-rided, generally not stripped/chopped. So my thought is these aren't pros. Any pro will come with the knowledge and firepower to either flatbed it out of wherever it is, or know ways around everything. So basically this will stop I'd say 85% of the theives out there.

Lo-jack? Doesn't it have a high recovery rate? What about on-star?

    Greg
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
The problem is that you have to get it stolen for it to work. The cars yesterday were recovered about 4hrs after being stolen and still complete losses. So what good would lo-jack do for you? Great you can find the hulk of metal!

In this area we have vandals just roaming the area and any car that is street parked they are smashing the side windows.

They did like over 20 in this area in one night, but I heard from a cop friend that the problem is citywide and almost an epidemic.

      Cheers Pat.

My fingers are crossed, I hope so! :-)

The author of the story confirmed it would come out tomorrow and I would be quoted. I seriously doubt they would send a professional photographer out to my house if they weren't also going to pulish our photo.

I'll be checking the on-line version early in the morn, but I hope to get some print copies for mom, dad, etc.

Page 4 of the Cars section, bottom half. I'm holding my daughter upside down, and my wife is next to me. My son is playing in his motorized Jeep, with Sandy in the background.

Sure enough, Jim in Texas, those Legacy turbo rims are front and center, immortalized. Sandy looks sparkling clean, not to OCD levels but the picture didn't capture that, else the club would put me on probation!

They put two photos next to each other, one with a guy standing up through a moonroof of his older Volvo, with an Accord in the background. They mistakenly call it a Civic. He basically kept his old cars, vs. me trading my Mazda 626 in for the Subaru. So it was point, counter-point.

Now Patti can approach her boss with this article and show a little substance. I doubt we would have bought a 2nd Subaru if Patti weren't around, and this coverage makes them look good - we switched to a more reliable brand - Subaru.

Gotta read the article now, see what I was quoted saying...

would help in the case of your insurance company paying for a rental. :-)

My insurance co. gives me a rental for 30 days, regardless of when the car is found. When I asked for an extension they said, "No, but you're much better off than if your car would have been found on the 28th day". Gee, thanks.

This is my first ever insurance claim.

Congrats Juice! Just read the article (my co-worker gave me the special cars section from the Times today). Nice family picture of you having fun in front of your Legacy.
Actually the article was nice as well:-)

    Any autographs?

    Mark
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Today's paper, Bob. Cars section, page 4. The photo is kind of small, and it's not on the front page like I was hoping, but I'll take it. My co-workers' reactions range from a polite "so-what?" to a few "wow"s!

I like my quotes, they got my point across. And my quote is highlighted, I said "I felt like we were going downhill and picking up momentum" about the 626.

Also, the subtext under the photo has all our names, it's cool.

Neat - they also mention Edmunds.com specifically, which is how I got in touch with the Times.

I'll subscrive and try to get that article into PDF format somehow so I can e-mail to my parents in Brazil.

I actually broke down and registered to the NY Times, which I SWORE I'd never do, just to read your story. I've crossed over to the dark side! Congrads on the article, Juice, nice job.

to hold their kids upside down, ask juice who doesnt park straight in his own driveway LOL, congrats....

What a great shot of everybody. Way to go, Juice! I can't believe the author didn't make a comment about "an underlying sense of speediness probably due to the snazzy (a word often found in NYT articles, btw) wheels". Oh well... :)

I registered also today, but still couldn't find it. Thanks go to Karen for posting the link.

Dan: I feel honored 'cause I hate registering also. ;-)

Usually it's my daughter that drives me upside down, LOL. I offered to park it on the grass (AWD means no problem getting traction) but the photographer said that spot was fine.

Look closely and you can see Sandy's tailgate and tail lights. :-)

A few Subaru owning co-workers have come forward. Several people complement the car. Now, I dunno, should I take that as an insult to my family if they didn't mention them? LOL

    congrats! :)
Ask NYTimes for a print to frame.

    -Dave
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
A couple of people have suggested that. Can they do that? What exactly is it? A framed blow-up of the original article?

I'll ask the reporter that interviewed me.

I snagged the article from our kitchen (at work) copy. :-)

    -Dennis
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yep, I'm in touch with the reporter, I'll see what they can provide.

Someone in the Miata thread noticed the article, it's funny. I've had one call from an old friend I hadn't seen in years, too.

Who would think this was the best way to find long-lost friends?

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Guess what? The other person quoted, and pictured right below us, is lancerfixer (real name: Dave).

I'll have a talk to him about it being his destiny to buy a Subie given his name...
