If the dealer bought it off the street he stole it.whenever someone comes in to dump a car

I assumed they traded it in. This was an older retired couple. I had called them on the phone and spoken to the owner to have a few questions about the car answered. I assume they didn't walk home. ;)

"...so I can get 96 months bought on them..."

Forgive me asking, as sometimes I have trouble with dealerspeak. Are you saying someone would finance a USED car for 8 years?

if the cust objects to the fee they see the humour in the 1234.56 and are willing to deal from there. Most just let it slide.

No wonder you make so much money.

Is this just a Florida thing or are people just as dumb elsewhere?

You said it. If they can't figure out how to vote how on earth do you expect them to know how to buy a car?

Two kinds of buyers in Florida.

Buyer one pays cash and buys something i dont sell.( i dont want them, they try to get a discount from coke machines)

Buyer two is just happy to be riding . ( my favorite cust 580 to 660 beacon)

Was just down in mid-south Florida visiting a friend. Next door neighbor was a very nice lady, not all that old (65 or so), and didn't seem that dumb. Until she said she paid $1,600 to replace 'belts and hoses' on her 1999 Chrysler some-kind-of-van.

I just hope to God that included a timing belt, transmission fluid change, coolant change, and brake fluid flush.

If not, then I feel Florida is full of dealerships preying on elderly, uninformed (auto-wise) widows, or ladies with house-bound husbands, such as this next door neighbor.

No way would I stick anyone with a 96 month contract.

They are buying cars they can't afford and shouldn't be buying.

""Saving-money" is not a dirty word either, so I would suggest paying between dealer trade-in and private party"

if this is the price you want, then buy from a private party. if you buy from a dealer who has done more to his car than a private party, then you should pay more.

or maybe you meant pay between private party and dealer RETAIL?
  • nthenthe Member Posts: 414
"That's why starting at dealer trade-in, when buying, isn't as crazy as it sounds. Dealerships don't pay trade-in value on the used cars they buy, most will buy your car at auction value. We the consumer may be winning the new car battle, but we are getting clubbed like baby seals on pre-owned."

you're right, most of the time dealers pay more for auction cars after you add in auction fees and transportation. but i do have news for you, trade in value is the same as auction value. when dealers use black book to assign a value to your trade in, they also use that same book when at the auction to decide how much to pay for a particular car. sometimes they pay too much, but sometimes they also pay too much for a trade in.

"Am I the only one with a Used car Department that pays full retail in the shop? "

no, we pay full retail through our shop too. its funny that some customers can get a better price getting something fixed than we can.

I have been here since these forums began and the thing I have NEVER been able to convince people of is the fact that the MARKET is what determines pricing. Not what our invoice happens to be, not what we happen to have invested in a used car, and NOT what some "book" happens to say.

Eureka! I actually agree with Craig! :D (Just having fun with you ;) )

My spider-sense was tingling after the pay retail suggestion, then the $750k salary, then the 80 hours a week etc. ... after each one Mr. Roy L. Fuchs, or someone else (i.e joel), seemed to have a plausable explaination as to how it is possible. Joel... this is all your fault! ;)

I have banks that will go 96 months on anything over 10k to finance on 2005 thu 2008 models .i also have banks that will go 120 months on any 2005 thru 2008 financing 20,000 plus. For these programs the cust must have a 660 or better beacon.

Florida and California dealers have programs that the rest of the country dont , in my area we are considered a test market. If the programs work out here the rest of the country will be offered the same in future,

These are non captive lenders i am discussing.

I use to buy private party. Then I found out you could get the same price from a dealership as you could from private party. You get the added security and convience of buying from a dealership. Plus I got a 30 day warranty on the pre-owned I bought and a free year of oil changes ( I know... no such thing as a free lunch). Probably stick with dealing with the "pros" here on out. So, I think starting out at dealer trade-in and paying between it and private party is certainly doable... certainly with most domestics.

You may be real... or a figment of all our imaginations. Many people still send letters and go to the mall to see Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.

I would suggest you send your business telephone number to our magnanimous host ( or to one of our trusted salesmen) to verify your claim, but that may be considered offensive to you.

Problem is most private party sellers price their cars at retail because their cars are in "excellent" or "showroom" condition.

LOL... so true. I remember selling several of my first vehicles through the newspaper and saying they were in "excellent" condition. At the time I thought it were true. Going by todays standards I would probably rate them "fair" to "good". :lemon:

I, for one, have all the belief in the world of your truthfulness.

What's the best tipoff for me? The funny one liners about peoples trades or word tracks about the business. You don't get that without being in the business forever.

    I believe!!!!

Deskman, next time your wife needs a Porsche, let me know. I'm ready to sell one to you.

Jip, you're such a pessimist. I remember when I first came on this board and everyone screamed at me telling me I was a troll. They said I would be gone in a week after stirring up everyone. Truth is, I would have left, but I decided to stick around out of spite.

At any rate, Deskman is for real. We're working on adoption papers right now. I think he's going to be an excellent father to me.

I have a 1988 Buick Park Avenue as well and it's a great car aside from the delaminating clear coat on the top surfaces. If I got it painted, it would look excellent as everything else is in great shape.

Real estate has a lot to do with the term of the loans

.In Florida and California house prices are much higher than the rest of the country .The bank in return loan longer on cars to meet the debt to income ratio most people have in these markets.

My Captive lenders ( the factory) only go as far as 84 months.

The third party lenders are the aggressive lenders that buy rough paper or go extended terms.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
They are all of the above and NUTS to take on a car loan for that length of time.

They are buying cars they can't afford...PERIOD!
