brave: Thanks for the write up on the EVO. There were 2 of them in my old neighborhood (1 red, 1 white). I really dig the angular aggressive styling, but the huge spoiler is too much for me:)

I saw a grey green metallic 330Ci SP today. The color looks great on the coupe I muct say. It is the first I've ever seen on one.

Howdy fellas! Anybody out there can give me feedback on overall ownership experience? I bet by now there's quite a few of you with at least a year. How about frequency and cost of tire replacement? Is it true you need to open an escrow account especially to get those 255/35 ZR-18 Michelin Pilot Sports? How about the clear bra in the hood? I have it on my 325i PP,5sp (which I to my deepest regret will have to trade, I love this car), but I don't know, what you guys think, is it a better value 3 years down the road to have rock chips marks on the hood or a probably faded away clear bra?
On my 325i trade, the dealer ignored the added value of the mud guards. Do you think it would be good idea to move them to the new 330i ZHP, or will that ruin the aerodynamics of the wheel?
Finally, what's the scoop on the fact the speed is electronically limited to 155 mph (by voluntary agreement between german car manufacturers)and not 128 mph as the other 3 bimmers? Is this true?

My nine year old has been wanting me to get a yellow Evo ever since we got the "2Fast 2Furious" DVD through a Mitsu test drive promotion. His plan is to keep the Club Sport and TJ while trading Mrs. div's E39. Yeah, that's gonna happen... FWIW, the Evo RS is even more uncompromising-no ABS, Xenons, A/C, or power windows. I did look into special ordering a regular Evo sans the wing and the hole in the roof, but I've about decided to pay off the E39 and save up for one of these before they get too expensive:
    image
div jr. is on board, and so is Mrs. div. I guess that my continual talk about buying an 1150 GS paid off; it now seems she'll agree to most any vehicle short of a minivan-just as long as it has four wheels...;)

Car's a blast and I look forward to driving it.

How about frequency and cost of tire replacement?

My car came with Potenzas. I have 14k on them and the fronts are fine. The rear tires won't last more than another 1k. I've owned the car for 10 months and it's mostly freeway miles.

Is it true you need to open an escrow account especially to get those 255/35 ZR-18 Michelin Pilot Sports?

I'm going SA-03s on my rears and through costco it'll be $480 including tax, install and road warranty.

How about the clear bra in the hood?

Maybe it's needed somewhere. No marks on my car beyond a little feelable though not visible road rash on the bottom of my air dam.

is it a better value 3 years down the road to have rock chips marks on the hood or a probably faded away clear bra?

Never had a bra and never had a car with marks. I'd guess this is a problem in areas with lots or snow or rain that tears up the roads. Shrug.

On my 325i trade, the dealer ignored the added value of the mud guards. Do you think it would be good idea to move them to the new 330i ZHP, or will that ruin the aerodynamics of the wheel?

Aerodynamics of the wheel? Not sure. I've not seen a ZHP with mudguards. People at bimmerfest might have though...

Finally, what's the scoop on the fact the speed is electronically limited to 155 mph (by voluntary agreement between german car manufacturers)and not 128 mph as the other 3 bimmers? Is this true?

Supposedly. But unless you've got a track, where are you gonna prove it? never broken 120 on the freeway (in the middle of nowhere and at 3 am so I'd die all alone).

    Hello everybody.

Has anyone ever had to change a lightbulb on a front turn signal light on a '01 325i?
It is my front (passenger-side) turn signal (blinker) indicator light. The manual says that there should be a "hook" that I can pull back and the casing will pop out so I can switch the lightbulb. I can't find a hook. The only thing I could find that resembled a hook was a plastic part sticking out which I tried to push and almost broke. After that I decided to leave it alone, but it is bugging me and I don't want to leave something minor like this for the dealership.

    Thanks.

This week's Autoweek had some photos of the new 4-series, which is what they're going to call the coupe equivalent of the new 3-series, which will be strictly a sedan. They said that it has "significant" styling differences from the sedan, but even so it looks really nice -- not even a hint of the Bangle-butt.
  • alibajalajaulaalibajalajaula Member Posts: 89
Those hooks can be very tricky. I ran into a similar problem during my initial warranty period. Had to take it to the dealer at least 4 times, in my case, it was the driver's side. The last time around they replaced the socket. The car was over 36K, but the advisor was so familiar with the problem that he did it out of courtesy.

    Does anyone have sand leatherette?

I am wondering how it compares to the sand leather. People have mentioned that the leatherette is pretty good but i am wondering about the light colored sand.

I am toying with getting oxford green with sand leatherette. If the sand leatherette looks cheap, then i may end up with a different color with black leatherette.

Any recommendations/comments about the letterette or good exterior colors?
  • alibajalajaulaalibajalajaula Member Posts: 89
IMHO leatherette looks cheap and degrades the car's resale value. There's nothing like the scent of real leather.. I once inspected a 330i with the black leatherette, and it is a synthetic, plastic-like surface, it almost resembled the floaters sold at Walmart. If your interest is to save the $1450 of the leather option, I would consider the BMW Merino Wool E46 seat covers (about $440, although non-BMW may be cheaper)to improve the looks. Of course, the proof of the pudding is to go yourself and ask at your favorite dealer for a car with leatherette to get acquainted.
  • brave1heartbrave1heart Member Posts: 2,698
I've done it in both sides of my '01 325i. You need a long screwdriver to insert into the narrow round opening where the hook is located, then push down and the triangular lens covering the light bulb will pop out. When you are done replacing the bulb, just push the lens in - it should snap into place.
  • erickplerickpl Member Posts: 2,735
I have the oxford green metallic and went with the natural brown interior. To me the sand was too light and almost looked more like yellow. You can see the nat brown interior/green exterior at: http://community.webshots.com/user/skimblz_

I wish it were an option on my 330i with Perf Package. Unfortunately, I could either take that icky cloth stuff or leather. I opted for leather but would have gone leatherette had it been an option.

I have an 2001 325i and brakes are about to go. Can someone tell me where to get OEM pads, rotors and replacement brake sensor for a good price? Also a website that details how to do it properly? (I saw posting thousands of post back somewhere that pointed to a website that showed step by step one time or another). thx!
  • shiposhipo Member Posts: 9,148
I don't remember where the "Step by Step" is on the web, however, I wrote one here a few years back when I did the brakes on my 1999 328i (the exact same brakes as on your 2001 325i) and I posted my own version of how to do it in message number 14914 (you can use the "Go To Msg#" to get there).

As for the parts, I bought mine from Steve at the Ultimate Garage in Emerson, NJ. You can buy all you need via his web site:

    I hope this helps.

contrary to opinion posted earlier. It doesn't wear at all. The sand does mark up easier than black, natch, and sometimes it takes elbow grease to get the mark out. It is a more pleasing color than the gray, livelier and warmer, IMO.

For ANY OEM BMW parts, always buy from Pacific BMW (www.pacificbmw.com). I have purchased from them 3-4 times (incl. pads and rotors). Their prices are so much lower than any of my 5 or 6 Boston dealers that I don't even bother to compare prices any more. Even with shipping all the way from the left coast, I come out way ahead.
e46fanatics.com has a good write-up on pad replacement in its DIY section. Also try http://m3.madrussian.net/ - the pics are pretty good.

I have gray leatherette in my Audi A4 and have no complaints at all. It is much easier to keep clean since it does not stain or get ground-in dirt as easily as leather, and after 6 years it looks like new. Some people are surprised that it is not leather.

I don't know if BMW's leatherette is equivalent, but that's what I'm getting on my 325i, in Sand. Again, a lighter color might be safer in leatherette than leather. My wife's car has a very light tan leather and it's a hassle keeping it clean (and we do not eat or drink in our cars!).

Oxford Green with Sand sounds like a really nice looking and distinctive combo!

We are picking up our new 330CI convert tomorrow morning, It is fresh off the boat with SP/PP/Xenons/Sept./leather etc.. We expect that the salesman will try to get us to buy extra stuff/ services etc. that we do not need. Would anyone out there care to help us on this and let us know if there is anything worth signing up for at delivery time or if we should just take the car and go. We are handy with tools etc. and could probably add some things ourselves. This is a purchase and not a lease. When we bought our last car TL we were pleasantly surprised that the salesman just took our check and gave us the keys without trying to sell paint sealant, carpet protector etc. Can we expect the same with BMW?

    many thanks !

I had a very good delivery experience. When I went to pick up my car, they had parked it inside the showroom. There were 2 M3, a Z8 and my 325. I was in and out of the dealership in less than 30 min. They tried to sell me the following stuff but were not pushy.

    Tire Protection
    Gap Insurance

    Floor mats were included.

I can't think of anything a BMW dealer would try to sell you.. Most of them don't do the mop-n-glo.

Maybe a third-party extended warranty, or a tire/wheel insurance program... say no to both.

BMW also offers an extension of the free maintenance plan to 6yr/100K.. Without passing judgement on the value, pass on this also.. as it can be bought at any time before the original free maintenance is up.

    Good luck!!

  • sjmurray3sjmurray3 Member Posts: 90
    What is this?
  • memphis10memphis10 Member Posts: 161
Say that you bought a car for $35K. With 0 down you owe the bank $35K. The moment you drive out, the car has depreciated by about $500-1K. After 1 month and 1500 miles it has depreciated by say about a total of $2K. If you happen to have a wreck say after 1 month and your car gets totalled, the insurance company will pay you the market value of the car (35K - 2K) = 33k. But you still owe the bank close to 35K. The Gap insurance will cover you for the difference.

As a general rule I get GAP on a lease but not on a purchase because with a lease your payments are much lower than the depreciation and the gap is higher. BMW leases include Gap Ins. This is for starters. The financial gurus in this forum can tell you more.

  • kdshapirokdshapiro Member Posts: 5,751
Gap insurance covers your loss in the event the car is totaled. If the car is totaled you are still liable for the payments, GAP insurance covers that. My dealer told me that *came* with deal, but I know I payed for it somewhere. I have always opted for GAP insurance, it's cheap at the price.

Blueguy: I know this is a little late, but from the ZHP vs G35 forum, on message # 269 to topsin628 late Dec 2003 you mentioned the acronym "NVH", regarding to a harsher suspension. Can you clarify? Also, what exactly tramlining on 18" wheels mean? When you said they pop, you meant the tire or the alloy wheel? Can you get a single wheel replaced or are you forced to buy the set?
All: I need some advice. I currently have a 2001 325i 5sp that I use to commute, and, ocassionally I floor it to 100, for 30 seconds on Beltway 8 South, right past the huge ramp coming from I-10 that climbs and then falls deep into a Nascar-like, six lane gorge, in H-town (at 5 AM with no cars around). Even without the sport package (just premium), this car gives me my adrenaline rush. The car still grips well at 40K on Continental CH95 91H all season tires. On the way back, I just take regular commuter traffic. I don't mind shifting in traffic, as long as I can get my bursts of acceleration. In all, it's about 40 mile roundtrip each day. Does any one believe this experience can be topped by a ZHP with high performance tires? Will it be considered car cruelty to subject a ZHP to such regime? Pending a business decision, I could be the market for a better Bimmer, with the Xenon, heated seats, etc, and more power, but I am also concerned about the 18" of the ZHP. I've never had that worry with my 16s on the 325i. Not that there are a lot of potholes in H-town, I-10 will be undergoing construction for the next 5 years, and paving becomes irregular in some spots. I test drove a 330i with a 6 sp tranny and a 330i ZHP. In both cases, it took me a while to locate the gears, especially, downshifting from 5th to 4th to 3rd, maybe because they are more separated than in a 5 speed tranny, so the error margin is less. The salesman said it was something you get used to. Sorry guys, seems like I'm rambling a bit.
    Bottomline:
a)I intend to keep my next BMW as long as possible. Between a ZHP and a 330i 6sp sport package which one could offer a better long term reliability, and resale value, say 6 years down the road?
b)Does any one out there has the impression 325is are as thrifty as it gets? I love the car I have but I just want to get some feeling from out there.
c)I read "its better to drive a slower car faster than to drive a faster car slower". Does anyone think that based on above driving habits (we do not have Southern California or West Virginia nice winding roads, H-town and surroundings are flat as a pool table, so you use the turnpikes, and excellent freeways), am I better off with the 325i than upgrading to 330i/ZHP?
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
you mentioned the acronym "NVH", regarding to a harsher suspension. Can you clarify?

NVH = noise, vibration and harshness. the ZHP suspension and tire choice transfers more of the road into the cabin. It's not as quiet or docile as a standard 330i.

Also, what exactly tramlining on 18" wheels mean?

Tramlining is when the tires, usually wider tires, cross over uneven pavemenet and cause the car to pull suddenlt from one side to another. San Diego freeways have many seams that run the length of lanes, thus driving in thos lanes with seams can be taxing as the car is constantly getting pull left or right.

Can you get a single wheel replaced or are you forced to buy the set?

I've had one blowout thus far. 255/35 18s are thin tires, so not much is left to protect you if things go bad. You can replace anything you want individually btw.

this car gives me my adrenaline rush.

What's funny is you said your current car gives a rush. So why go a new direction? If your 325 is filling the cookie jar, enjoy that fact. The ZHP is a louder, more raucous vehicle. For my money it's still not fast enough but that's just me.

Will it be considered car cruelty to subject a ZHP to such regime?

It's just a car. A luxury item. You buy it and it will fall apart and lose value.

a)I intend to keep my next BMW as long as possible. Between a ZHP and a 330i 6sp sport package which one could offer a better long term reliability, and resale value, say 6 years down the road

I'd guess the 330i would age better as it's a softer package and the components aren't subjected to some of the same rigors. Resale will probably be wretched on both cars. It'll be an old design and faster, better Bimmers will be out by then.

    b)No idea.

c)I read "its better to drive a slower car faster than to drive a faster car slower". Does anyone think that based on above driving habits (we do not have Southern California or West Virginia nice winding roads, H-town and surroundings are flat as a pool table, so you use the turnpikes, and excellent freeways), am I better off with the 325i than upgrading to 330i/ZHP?

Man, none of us can answer that for you. Whatever fun and value you see in the cars is what matters. It's your coin.

    Hello everyone!
Heres my $.02 on leather vs. leatherette. I think they are both good for particular reasons. Leatherette doesn't crack and wear down nearly as easily as leather, but leather looks great. Not everyone can tell the difference between the two. Also, leather isn't the easiest to keep clean, especially when its black.

I had a flat on the rear left tire. I was a little skeptical to drive around with a plugged tire, so I put the spare wheel on. Normal driving is fine but sometimes at very high speeds (slightly above 100 mph) there is some vibration. I am not sure is it is the road or the car. Do you think a new wheel and tire would need balancing. Also, what is the ideal tire pressure in 225/45/R17 tires (325i sports pkg).

I purchased my 2001 325I on 3/14/01. My general understanding of the 4 years/50000 miles factory warranty and the 36000 free maintenance is probably like most people, began on the day I PURCHASED and took ownership of the car. So I thought my factory warranty will last until 3/14/05 (or 50000 miles) and the free maintenance will last until 3/14/04 (0r 36000 miles), but was I wrong. When I brought my car in last week for some check up, I found out from the service advisor that my free maintenance was expired on 11/30/03, and my factory warranty will be expiring on 11/30/04. The advisor told me that my effective warranty/maintence became effective ON THE DAY MY CAR WAS ON THE DEALERSHIP LOT, not the day I took ownership of it. Apparently the car was delivered to the dealership on 11/30/00. I did not buy it until about 4 months later. In other words, I lost 4 months of warranty/maintenance. I called BMW and the guy pretty much told me the same story. So I asked him if the car has been sitting in the lot from the beginning of 2001 (January), and no one bought it until the end of the year (December), does that mean that the customer lost A WHOLE YEAR of warranty/maintenance? He told me that's the way it works. But this seems totally ridiculous to me, especially when the dealership did not disclose this when I purchased my car. Can anyone shed some lights on this? Thanks./

Has anyone bought a sedan and wished they'd got a convertible instead? Or the other way around? I love the looks of the convertible and really was set to fall in love with it until I saw how limited the space is. I am waiting for delivery of my sedan but still find my head turning at every convertible i see on the road. I just hope i don't keep wishing i had gotten it instead.
  • gordonwdgordonwd Member Posts: 337
You're right -- this really sounds bogus. If a car sits on the dealer's lot for 6 months, it seems like that's the dealer or BMW's problem, not yours. I'd like to hear someone in the know confirm or deny this. I might be visiting my dealer this week so I'll try to remember to ask them. I have a 325i on order, and I'll be picking it up the day after it arrives at the dealership, so I don't have any personal concerns about the policy.

Here's the wording from the BMW web site:

"The warranty period is for 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first, and begins on the date of first retail sale, or the date the vehicle is placed in service as a demonstrator or company vehicle, whichever is earlier. "

The interesting thing is what they consider a "demonstrator". When I was shopping various options, whenever I mentioned wanting to try, say, a manual trans or sport package, the sales rep always said "I have one of those you can drive", and he'd bring a new car around that I would take out for a spin. These always seemed like brand new cars (<50 miles on the odo) and I wondered a couple of times if they just let people drive anything in dealer stock that would later be sold as a new car. I always take it easy on a demo drive, but I'm sure there are some who do not.

So I wonder if by my taking a new car for a drive, it went "in service" and the eventual buyer would lose the time on his/her warranty. Another reason I'm glad I custom-ordered mine!
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,617
It sounds like your car was put in service to the dealership (loaner/demo?), perhaps to gain some type of incentive from the manufacturer. If this wasn't disclosed to you at time of sale, I would be raising a stink. How they described it to you is just not true. The warranty doesn't start running when the car arrives.

My guess is the vibration is just coming from the fact that one rear tire has more tread than the other... This should subside as the tire wears in... Usually very quickly.. There is always the chance that its not balanced correctly, but more likely that the PSI is off. I would first check that the pressure is equal between the two rear tires.

    Thanks kyfdx.
dolandgab - I encountered a similar issue when I was trying to negotiate a deal on a new 330i which was a 2002 model but had been sitting on the dealer lot for 9 months. The dealer said that it was brand new with 70 miles on it and had never been titled. But he also said that after a while, the dealer has to buy the car from BMW and thats when the warranty starts. Therefore, almost 6 months of warranty had gone off on the car. It sounded fishy to me and so I called off the deal.
  • riezriez Member Posts: 2,361
Look over your service paperwork. The two BMW dealers I've dealt with had the in-service date information on every service invoice. So the very first time I had either serviced, I knew what their computers were saying about both b-to-b warranty and free maintenance agreement.

You should also look over all your original purchase agreement information. See if you signed any waivers or disclaimers. The original paperwork might help establish in service date.

If I was you, I'd get the dealership to explain to you in writing their position.

    1. Are the counter weights on all the rims suppose to be on the inside of the rim? Its a '02 325i with stock rims.

    2. I noticed that there's isn't a key whole on passenger side of my car (I also noticed this on a current gen Jetta). Not that it matters but I'm just curious as to whether this is a standard practice and whether BMW has been doing this for years.
  • riezriez Member Posts: 2,361
efxx... The use of only 1 key hole (on driver's door) has been going on for some time. Lots of manufacturers. Saves them money. Buyers don't ever notice. [My '00 Lincoln LS8 had it. My '03 & '04 Lexus IS300 have it.]

Don't think there is any need. Can't remember if my '98 540i6 had a passenger-side keyhole or not. Or my former '00 323ia. But don't think I ever used a key on the passenger side. And in over 50,000 plus miles of driving in both, don't think I ever used the key in the driver's door. Proves their point.

The use of keyless entry in nearly all cars today is minimizing the need for 2 key holes.
  • dolandgabdolandgab Member Posts: 2
Thanks for all of your response. When I purchased my car on 3/01, it only had 25 miles on it. So it was hardly a demo or loaner. So it was a shock to me when they pulled a stunt to me like this on my warranty. I did call BMW customers service dept and they pretty much stood by their "theory of warranty". Who else can I talk to besides the BMW customers service rep dept? This just sounds too fishy for me to just accept it...

dolandgab... Get all your paperwork together. All the papers from when you bought it. Pour over the owner's manual and warranty book to see what it says. Try to get BMW NA to put their position in writing. Write them a letter asking for them to explain themselves in writing.

Then either contact the Consumer Protection Division of your State's Attorney General's Office or see if you can get a lawyer to represent on a contingency.

i don't know about you, but i'd say at least half of the customer service reps i've spoke to in my life time don't seem to know much. maybe you should call back to see if you get the same response. unless your car was in fact put in service by the dealer, i doubt you'll get the same response. the fact that the car only had 25 miles on it when you purchased it does not mean it wasn't put in service. BMW's warranty is pretty clear on when the warranty goes in to affect. it should be the date it was purchased unless the car was put in service. my guess is that it was in fact put in service and the dealer did not disclose this to you at time of purchase. i'd talk to the gm of the dealership about it. see if you can work it out. if not and you feel that strongly about it, call an attorney. hope it all works out.
