I have lots of fun with the Borla. Just tonight I was neck to neck with one of those modified Integras. You know, the ones with lowering kits, rear wings, add-on fiberglass gingerbread galore, ad nauseum. We were on a two lane onramp going up to a freeway. Not really racing. He made the mistake of having his drivers window open, and his head was probably at the level of my exhausts. It's a long on-ramp at the end of a valley, going up to the 12 lane freeway at a summit between two hills. All the way up the ramp I held it at 3800 rpm, which is the maximum resonance peak for the V-6. Yes, the Borla can be loud if you know where that load point is. It's a combination of throttle opening, load and rpm. Anyway, at the bottom of the ramp I had it in fourth, and the rpm was low and the car quite quiet. But when I dropped it to third, and pressed on the "loud pedal", you should have seen the face on this rice burner driver. If I could read lips I bet he said "What the .... is that?"
So,Omega8, if you're not afraid to walk on the wild side, get the Borla. You will feel the difference, and the price is a little more noise at certain rpms. The V-8 may have different resonance point(s) than the V-6 and maybe Brian can tell you where they are. I get a great "burble" at idle that is so much better than the antiseptic stock system. And if I behave and keep the shift points at a normal rpm, the Borla is very polite. But from 3500-4100 rpm under large throttle openings, that X-box is really working in it's tuned range. And I have a feeling torque is maximized by the X-box in that range. And although I have no instrumented data, I can tell from the seat of my pants that throttle response and acceleration is better. This ain't your father's Lincoln, and with the Borla, it certainly doesn't sound like one either.

I would expect that cars like the LS that have both SAE and metric scales and the ability to switch electronic displays would not be at issue.

On that note, I did browse the US Customs website and found that there is a duty, presuming a US resident purchasing in Canada and import to the US:

Based on the value (invoice amount) in US dollars:

    $400 "tourist" exemption +
    4% on the next $1,000 +
    2.5% on everything above the 1st $1,400.

In addition, vehicles with a combined EPA rating of less than 22.5 mpg get a Federal gas-guzzler tax from $1,000 up to $7,700 depending on how bad they are.

And all that is presuming no other hinks like safety or emissions upgrades. Also, on something like this, I think some or all of the Canadian GST can be refunded (15% on the total value) offsetting some of the US Customs pain.

I'm interested in what options you got on your used V6 manual? Also, what color is it? Thanks

Stanny1 - I like your driving stories. They are great. I get a laugh out of them.

So, does anybody have any advise on the GMS mass air flow meters? Is there anything to be aware of? Or should I just go for it? Thanks.

I think you need to find another dealer. Your failures do not sound like the window regulator problem. The symptom of the window regulator failure is that the window is detached from the motor and will not stay up by itself. The switch and motor work just fine, but it's no longer connected to the window.

You need a dealer that can troubleshoot the problem instead of endlessly replacing parts.

I'm having a new windshield installed tomorrow because 8-10 small bubbles have developed in or near the tint strip on the drivers side. Service manager said the rubberized layer between the glass must be defective. Anyone else have this problem?

My orginal post was deleted by our host due to masked profanity. Here the cleaned-up version.
By the way this is at Pavilion LM in Austin, TX.

I give up..I am so fed up with these window problems that I can't see
straight. I am seriously thinking about selling this Lemon to some other
fool. I have also come to the conclusion that LS stands for LEMON
SUCKER..!!!! The first time the part was replaced was 6-12-01. I had another
failure, same window, and the part was replaced again on 8-14-01. Well low
and behold I had another failure, same window, on 8-16-01 (yes..2 days
later). Well the part failed again on 8-26-01 (10 days later) same window.
On this last failure I waited until noon today, 9-25-01 to have it repaired.
I went to drop the car off at lunch today and they said that if I wanted to
wait it would only take 15 minutes or I could get a loaner. I didn't mind
waiting 15 minutes but the 15 minutes turned into an hour..but I won't go
there at this time. Needless to say I was VERY upset and drove off without
collecting my paperwork. I left the dealer and drove to work, I left work
this afternoon to go home and guess what?? BINGO..you guessed it..the window
would not work. The repair lasted for maybe 3 or 4 up/down cycles. So
tomorrow they will install ANOTHER replacement part for the 5TH TIME..!!
I wish someone would please teach me how to roll down windows becasue I
MUST be doing something wrong. I mean I am using my left index finger to
operate the controls. Is this the wrong finger? Should I be using my left
hand with my toes crossed? Should I only roll down the windows on even
numbered days?? I need some assistance here. Lincoln, where are you? What is
up with these windows and why can't you design a decent part?? And why am I
having so much problem getting the problem fixed. I mean I am talking about
5 failures on the SAME window.
I am so fed up with this that if this car was financed with FMC or
even leased I would tell them to come pick it up. This is the last Ford
that I will ever own, all beacuse of poor customer service and a $65 part.

akirby: you must have read my post before it was yanked. The window is detached from the regulator. I can go out there now and roll the window donw about half-way, shut the door and the window will drop the rest of the way. Once it has dropped I can then grab the window with my hand and pull the entire window glass up. This tells me the window is not attached to the regulator.
  • stanny1stanny1 Member Posts: 962
If the window control switch is moving the trolley up and down it's track, and the window glass is being moved up but not down by the trolley, then the large plastic plug or button that attaches the glass to the trolley has fallen out. This is a job for "silicone seal", although there is supposed to be a revised "plug".
The more common problem is what I call the "explosion in the speghetti factory syndrome" wherein the metal cable decides to misbehave and go off the motorized drum winder and off it's "track". In this case the motor "freewheels" and the cable doesn't go along for the ride. Your window will do the "crash".
So, doc, what's the symptom? This is certainly the biggest window case I have ever heard of. Both of mine crashed in September of 2000 and the revised mechanisms installed in November fixed the problem. I just wonder what's failing at this
    late date.

I would contact your dealer principal and tell them that due to their failure to rectify your problem that you want to invoke your state's Lemon Law. There should be a number for your state's Consumer Affairs department that can show you how to fill out the paperwork. Here's a link I found for the Texas Lemon Law info.

Well I had my fingers crossed for 25,000 miles while I read of all the window servo failures. Well, the Grim Reaper finally made a house call last weekend. In the shop today to get both sides fixed.
  • sniemietzsniemietz Member Posts: 40
The Lemon Law is something that I am going to look into this morning. I happen to work for the Texas Department of Transportation which is the state agency here in Texas that enforces the Lemon Law. Kind of ironic huh.? Anyway I work in the IS department and I will defiantly be calling our Motor Vehicle Division to get the skinny on the in's & out's of the law. Although I love the performance of the vehicle I would be tickled pink if Lincoln purchased this vehicle back. If that ever happened I would not buy another Lincoln or Ford.

    heyjewel,
My LS is silver with the charcoal leather interior. It has all of the options(sport, convenince group, moonroof, heated seats, 6 disc in dash changer) except for the chrome wheels. If you're looking for an LS your best deal would be a manual since it seems these are harder to sell.
  • thomas_lthomas_l Member Posts: 134
Good luck. Hopefully Texas is more clear and user friendly. Georgia has a mish-mash of conditions that must be met (i.e. total days out-of-service, total visits for the same, not different, repairs, proof of manufacturer involvement, arbitration, mileage, yada yada yada). The automotive lobby have done a grand job of declawing our lemon law. You just about have to take delivery of your new car on a tow truck to even fill out the first line on the first form to get lemon law started.

My advice (been there done that!) is to escalate within Ford and be patient and persistent. Document everything, dates, times, names, everything. Start making phone calls and writing letters - especially old fashioned ones that go in an envelope with a stamp on it.

When you say the key words "LAWSUIT" or "LEMON LAW BUYBACK" Ford will lawyer up & dig in their heels and you'll be better off parking the car in your yard and just paying the note without using it.
  • fantomfantom Member Posts: 211
My experience with the Lemon Law in Florida, with Ford, has been that a very civil mention of it to your Lincoln Serice Manager can get you immediate results.

The suggestion to be patient, persistant and civil is a good one. You may find yourself with a new LS, if not a refund check, without having to go through the laborious legal process.

If the "honey" approach doesn't get you quick results, hunker down and go for the jugular. Good luck!

    Thanks for advice.

What dealer did u get this from?
  • klarson1klarson1 Member Posts: 60
Why is this happening? Why does it continue? Why havent we heard a single word from any Lincoln rep as to the status of this problem? Why is the answer to this problem to fix it yourself? Why can't anyone come up with a fix?

To think that such a minor problem will bring this car down is unbelievable. Yet why shouldn't it.
I don't care how great the trans is, or how great the handling is, or how great the engine is, or how cheap it is, if the windows don't stay up who needs it.

Anyone else notice how we haven't heard a word from JR's replacement?
Maybe she bought one of these Lemons and can't take the heat.

By the way... after sending my name, phone and vehicle ID to Jim I never heard a thing from him or anyone else.

For all u LS enthusiasts out there... I got a car for you and will sell it to you real cheap..
ALong with a box of Duct tape to hold your rear windows up.

One last thing... I've had the reflash on the trans and I still think it sucks.. It downshifts abruptly,
hesitates when accelerating, and often leaves me floating at 30mph while it decides what gear to try next..

    Hear hear!

I just got mine to the dealer yesterday. I called ahead (there I go thinking again) presuming they would schedule me in after making sure the tag lamp housings were in. Hello? I still have one bad and will have to return whenever they get one in. I also mentioned delayed engagement hoping to get the latest PCM reflash. According to the SO I got 1-01-05, not the latest 1-14-05.

This dealer had done such a great job in the past. Now I am seeing that the great job may have been more with the service advisor. The guy I had worked with in the past called me back in March to let me know who to call since he was leaving. The new guy didn't even call to let me know the car was ready. I had to call them.
  • mkovalskmkovalsk Member Posts: 114
It doesn't matter. The software is identical.

The only difference between these two TSBs is that 1-14-05 included some cars that were overlooked in the original TSB. If you had either of these TSBs performed on your car you have the correct software.

I figured it was my penance for putting it off. I have noted a significant improvement and expect that will improve with some time & mileage as the PCM goes through it's learning cycle.

    Mark,

I know you have moved on to a new transmission, but I want to thank you for still keeping up with us. It says alot about you and we appreciate you.

Now regarding that JR Replacement. Couldn't JR apply some heat or somebody get the replacement engaged? One of the big things necessary for Success is consistency. JR has raised the bar by becoming involved with the customer base. Hence, his successor should continue that level of service.

The Consistency issue also applies to Dealer Service Advisor. My Service Advisor has a whole lot to do with how I See Lincoln. I guarantee you this when he leaves I will not feel connected anymore and I am sure his successor will suck. Why? Because Dealerships focus on their service reps bringing in money instead of providing consistently good customer service. As a result I will probably get an Service Advisor that is driven by the bottom line instead of one that focuses on the balance between Customer Service and the bottom line.

Anyways let me get off my soap box. Mark you will we see you at the Happy hours or plant, etc?

    Regards,
    Airwolf

Due to the great response we have to close registration to Mania as of Sunday at 5:00 pm Pacific time. If you have not turned in your registration and are planning on attending, make sure you email me at brian.gowing@llsoc.com before then to let me know that you've mailed the registration form. After this date, there are no guarantees that there will be room left on the tour.

We have close to 50 people attending which is about the maximum capacity for the tour to give us the maximum amount of fun.

Got a call today from Ford...geeeh maybe this forum does have some impact...
Wanted to know what my problem was with the car.
Explained the window problem and how the dealer refused to fix both rear windows per the TSB.
The spokesman said he wasn't aware of the TSB and would check it out.
Gave him the number and wah-lah...Oh he says..yes it does say to fix both windows if one fails.. I will call your service manager at the dealer and inguire.
    Ok I said..
Few minutes later got another call... Ford had talked to the dealer and "IF" the other window was covered under warranty.. they would notify me and have me bring it in to fix the other rear window with the "improved" regulator.

We''ll see...I'm keeping the box of duct tape just in case....

The dealer took my car yesterday morning to try to fix the window again. I must say they were very responsive. They had the rental agency drop off a TC, after they verified I that I had a car they picked mine up at the office. They said they fixed the window by replacing the plug at the bottom of the window. Well I am not holding my breath, time will tell. Today my wife called me a chicken because I wouldn't roll down the window.

Now that my car is fixed my opinion of Ford products has not changed. At this point I will not even allow my 7 month old son to have a Ford Hot Wheels car. Do I sound bitter..you bet. I expect a quality product and quality service. Oh..by the way..the plug costs $1.65. So I stand corrected. Ford lost a customer over a $1.65 part vs.a $65 part.

When is Lincoln going to issue a RECALL on this? It has been said by Lincoln folks, at my dealer and elswhere, that it isn't a matter of if, but when? Are they waiting for most of us to go out of warranty and have to foot the bill ourselves? I bleed Ford blue but something like this would make me rethink having 2 LS's in my garage. For the money we've shelled out for these otherwise fine automobiles, one would think Ford/Lincoln would just issue a RECALL and keep our loyalty. After all, the problem only affects one model year.
  • lolaj42lolaj42 Member Posts: 420
I agree completely with ezaircon4jc . . . Ford/Lincoln/Mercury should just issue a RECALL. If the "new and improved" regulators are failing, replace those units also. It's absolutely ridiculous that a "prestige" brand should suffer from such a piddley and CHRONIC problem.

The folks hosting the Wixom homecoming will get an EAR FULL of complaints and sarcasm at an event that SHOULD be a celebration of a fine automobile. A stupid problem such as this will go a long way to scuttle an otherwise good time. Left unresolved, the little trinketts that usually go a long way toward building consumer loyalty (like the pens given out at Mania 1 in Irvine) will just be a bad joke.

So far, knock wood, I have not had a window problem, but this failure is not a question of 'if' but, rather 'when'. If that's the case, Lincoln should just step up to the plate and fix it once and for all on their tab rather than mine after the warranty expires.

ghealey: The LS is a very capable car in the snow. Scroll back a bit, or check out LLSOC.com and you'll see it's been discussed at length.

Re recall: Couldn't agree more. Mine haven't failed yet either, but it seems inevitable with a 5/00 build date. Nobody who bought an expensive car (shoot, they're ALL expensive) should have to wait for a failure to get a known defect repaired. C'mon, Lincoln. You've spent a fortune developing this great car, and you're going to alienate customers over a pissant little problem like this?
  • leadfoot4leadfoot4 Member Posts: 593
I, too, don't understand why a recall hasn't been issued. As of yet, mine haven't failed. However, since the failure rate has been well discussed here, I will not roll down the rear windows. They haven't been down in probably 9 months.
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, my wife goes into a rough section of town with this car, and if the windows fail...........
  • thomas_lthomas_l Member Posts: 134
Have pretty much dulled my enthusiasm as well. I decided not to take the Wixom trip for that reason. No point in making a nearly 700 mile, $500+ trip, except for the fact that the extreme few who seem to care might show up for face time. If you ask me, the folks at Lincoln who care need to spend that time beating down bad dealers and making sure the freshly minted LS's don't get on the train with known issues in the first place. After two years worth coming out the door, the "new production" argument is used up.
  • keyrowkeyrow Member Posts: 214
I love my '01 V6M. For those who are dissatisified, where else can you find the performance/luxury/price combination found in the LS? There are none! The only alternatives I can think of are BMWs at a significantly higher price. Neither Lexus IS300, MB C, nor Acura TL S are anywhere close. I think Lincoln knows this and will permit some problems to pass the QA checks because many of us are willing to "compromise" to save that $10K. Speaking for myself alone, that is a true statement. The LS's value is just too hard to overlook. Those truly into performance will be looking at the M3/M5. The other BMW owners seem to be more concerned with being seen in one rather than what it is capable of or what it cost (the Yuppie scum syndrome). So where ya gonna go? I'm sticking with Lincoln for now, as long as they stay within "spitting distance" of the competition (although I might just take a look at the new 350Z). Waiting to see what the '03 has in store for us.

Sorry, I cannot make Mania II as my second annual kidney transplant checkup is scheduled that Friday and it is an all day event which leaves one exhausted. For those of you who are going please do raise these issues though as I agree they are very irritating for a car in this price range. Looking forward to the reports from the event.

I find the value of the LS outstanding. Sure, there are things I have in my LS like a the ticking noise that some have discussed, but it doen't affect my driving or my comfort, so I overlook it. I have not experienced the window failure, so I can't speak on that, but I also know that other more expensive auto's are just as prone to problems as I see them on the other boards. I guess I am just a lucky LS owner that hasn't got hit by some of the problems that others have expressed. I had numberous warranty issues on my Taurus, but I still liked the car, and the dealers were competent to fix all my issues. I only hope my Lincoln dealers are the same. I am just one that doesn't believe in perfection, so I therefore don't demand it from anyone or any company because I would not want to be treated that way either. But how they handle fixing an imperfection makes the world almost perfect for me (assuming they take care of me).
  • leadfoot4leadfoot4 Member Posts: 593
I fully well realize that the LS has a big "bang for the buck" quotient, but things like functioning windows are sort of expected in ANY car, let alone one that is $35K +.
As I've mentioned, mine haven't failed yet, but it's really creepy thinking that it could happen at any time. It's even more an issue with me, because my wife didn't want the LS in the first place. I talked her into it. If it develops any serious problems, you know who'll catch hell for it !!
  • stanny1stanny1 Member Posts: 962
Alphanstein and Keyrow hit it on the head. Value. Yes, my windows had to be fixed. But I really have no complaints about the durability of the car. I see the car through Manual transmission eyes and as Keyrow pointed out, in our Manual world it is a finite market and we know our place. In 1999 and 2000, where are you gonna go? The Americans and Japanese went on a FWD orgy in the middle 80's and I had to keep my 5 speed Cressida for 17 years to weather out the Manual/RWD/4 door drought. Nothing about cars excited me. I dropped all my car mags subsciptions. Car stuff was just mental masturbation. I turned to audio/video/computers/digital cameras. The car world was full of appliances for well over a decade. All I heard about BMWs was expensive prices, expensive parts and outrageous service needs. I was spoiled by a Japanese car that went to the junkyard with an engine that still ran like a top, an overdrive five speed manual that never failed, the original clutch, water and fuel pumps! I know I was spoiled. So the LS has big shoes to fill. So far so good. And the performance level of my LS far exceeds the Cressida even with all the mods and time spent (suspension, wheels, battery in the trunk).
Yes, I want to see the LS Manual "finished". I'd like either the Getrag six-speed or the RX-7 five-speed overdrive tranny and a 3:58 rear with LSD. That's all the car needs to make it competitive for value (not to mention 0-60 under 7 seconds).
In MY 2002, The Manual LS has more competition. Audi, MB, Infiniti G35, IS300, Cadillac are "manualizing". The LS has it's unique size, as I find the 3 series and imitators just too small (And I'm only 5'10" and 200 lbs). My lease is up in July 2003. It could be an interesting market then. I hope the LM team keeps the ball rolling. The LS Manual doesn't need an expensive redesign. Performance buyers don't buy sheet metal. We like numbers. The LS Manual just needs it's deficiencies addressed. I call it "finishing school". Until 7/2003, I'm still going to have a smile on my face. After all, without the Manual LS, I would probably be driving an appliance.

    How about Audi?

I'm in Germany again (last one out before our company put a huge clamp-down on "international" travel last week), and have another Audi for my rental. Came over a couple of days early and used vacation days to tour Switzerland. Last time it was an A3 with a 1.9 litre turbodiesel -- this time it's an A4 with the same engine. These are well-built cars without the yuppie scum image of the BMW. The ones I've driven here are FWD, but the Quattro is pretty attractive, and manuals are standard equipment on A4's, S4's & A6's in North America, or at least a no-cost option. Granted the weight distribution isn't so good as on the LS, but the fit and finish aren't even in the same time zone, let alone zip code.

The only potential "issue" that the Audi comes with, as nearly as I can tell, is reliability. Compared to what? Japanese cars? Everyone's worse. The LS? Let's wait and see. I have a suspicion that many of the Audi reliability issues are relatively minor as well, but have no real yardstick, since Audi folks, like most of the LS crowd, leases cars and have no interest whatever in what happens once the warranty expires.

I helped my brother get his TT re-bought by Audi, but he took another one. I've heard too many horror stories about the Audi's, all electrical.

I realize that this reflects on their suppliers, so I take the same knowledge with my LS. Cars are cheaper now, but the direct control of the companies are looser now. Too much outsourcing!

Brother's TT, A/C went out five times and they replaced Instrument Cluster three times. When it was pointed out that a "Lemon" buy back" on the title might cause problem, they provided a nice replacement for his red TT.

Mein LS has been trouble free. No window problems yet, but I don't worry about it. Sort of like, I don't worry about taxes and death, both are there, so we'll see how it goes!

For those having rear window problems, I feel for you. I hope that there is a resolution to this problem soon. I don't necessarily think that this makes the vehicle a has been

I think it's time I chimed in on the window thing. I agree with what everyone says about the window problem (both viewpoints). Lincoln should issue some sort of recall, SSM or something to all affected owners of the LS having them come in and get their regulators replaced whether they are defective or not, with the new parts. It's obvious that the old part was inadequately designed or built.

The ridiculousness of this situation is exponentially increased by the dealer network not heeding the TSB directions which specifically state that BOTH regulators should be changed out at the same time. Why Lincoln isn't stressing the importance of this to their dealer network is surprising to me.

The other part that is frustrating me is that the dealers aren't making any attempt to put themselves in the customers place. How would any of them like to drive around with duct tape holding up their windows? How hard can it be for the dealer to pin the window in the upright position while waiting for the parts to come in? And how hard is it for the dealer to fix it properly the first time?

Like it or not, Lincoln's involvement on this site won't improve since Jim Rogers left. He did this board on his own time and while the Lincoln folks submarine surf this board, outside of Scot and Mark, I don't expect any response from an official Lincoln spokesperson any time soon, if ever. I've emailed several people at Lincoln telling them that they are blowing one of their strongest assets by neglecting this, but haven't made much impact.

Interesting article in the Sept 17 edition of the trade journal Automotive News, page 10, "Lincoln's On Top."

It states that Lincoln is the #1 seller of luxury vehicles in the US so far for the 2001 calender year. Even though sales are down for the year Lincoln "has risen to the top of the heap in luxury vehicle sales".

The distinction is that the government defines a 'luxury vehicle' as one that sells for more than $38,000. Given that threshold, 55.6% of BMWs are classified as luxury vehicles, 57.7% of Lexus and 68.6% of Mercedes. 92.3% of Lincolns are considered luxury vehicles.

I guess my 2000 LS Manual at $32,800 is not considered a "luxury car" by govment standards.
Maybe it's considered a "performance" car? HA! Don't you love the term "entry level luxury car"? Almost yuppie scum!

I made my 3rd trip to the dealer this afternoon. My 3rd trip to the dealer was to have them document moisture in the headlight assembly. It seems when they washed the car after my visit on Wednesday the headlight seal gave way and now I have condensation on the passenger side. I asked the service manager to document the mileage, the problem and the date and I would schedule an appt. next week.

For those of you who have not had any problems with you car consider yourself lucky. I just counted the number of warranty claims against my car and the total, counting the headlight assembly is 13. My car is 2000 V8 non-sport with a build date of 2/00 and I have 13,900 miles on the car

Would anyone blithely suggesting that L-M issue a "recall" for the back windows please enlighten me as to how in the world this annoying, but not safety related problem in any way connects to the recall procedure. Sometimes we get so full of ourselves on this board that we don't even think logically! Sure it is annoying, sure it might end up costing money, but it is NOT properly the subject of a recall. For your information, the recall procedure is limited to those defects which make a vehicle fail to meet Federal Safety standards OR which are otherwise safety related. What you guys are talking about is issuing an instruction to dealers that the factory will reimburse the dealers for repairing those rear windows regardless of mileage. Since a warranty is a contract between the purchaser and the seller (or manufacturer), look at the warranty. It specifies the length of time and the mileage. Anything above that is discretionary on the part of the company. There is little doubt on my part that if you could prove that the item broke before the warranty expired and that the dealer stalled until afterward, the cost would be covered. Otherwise it is not. Sorry, that is my opinion.
