    hey everyone
I was curious if anyone here has or knows anyone who has purchased a car online using a carsdirect.com or something similar. Thier prices look great, but I always tend to think that if it's too good to be true, then it probably is too good to be true. Has anyone had a good or bad experience buying a car this way? Thanks.

Thank you all for posting your buying experiences here. The information is extremely helpful. I live in Boise, Idaho and the two dealers in this area have totally unacceptable pricing. I made my purchase in Sacramento on Saturday afternoon and was back in Boise the next day.

Here is the breakdown on the 2005 Honda Accord EX-V6 Sedan:

    Car Incl. Dest: $23,173
    Delivery Out of State: $200
    Doc: $45
    Title: $14
    Tire: $9
    Total: $23,441 (Paid Cash)

I will also pay 5% sales tax in Idaho when I register the vehicle here. I paid $200 to have the vehicle delivered from Sacramento to Reno to avoid CA sales tax. I need to go home this way anyway, so it's easy and saves me about $550 in tax.

I purchased from Autowest Honda in Roseville and the experience was great. I got quotes from several other Sacramento area dealers that were up to $200 less, but only Autowest Roseville was both competitive and willing to assist me taking delivery out of state. Request a quote from their website and deal with the internet manager only. I got the usual pressure from the Finance Mgr. to buy the extended warranty, but I expect that (just say no).

The car is awesome! Very luxurious. Also, I averaged 31 mpg on the 500 mile trip back driving through the mountains at 65-80 MPH with the A/C on. I am very happy with it.

For the rest of you who live in smaller markets with provincial dealers who won't deal, don't be afraid to go out of town - it's easy, can save you a significant sum of money. This is what this forum and a free market is all about.

Buying out of town, if necessary, also sends an important message: "I know what other people are paying for this car. Treat me fair and I will buy locally, and you will make a reasonable profit. If not, I will buy from an out-of-town superstore and you will make nothing."

    Good Luck

I am planning to purchase a LX 4A in the next week or so. I've gotten one quote so far of $18,200 (incl. dest.) + tax and tag. Does anyone know if this is a good price in this area? I'm thinking I should be able to get $17,900-18,000. Thanks.

Check my postings (nash123) and desseekingcar's postings. We are both in Chicago and bought our cars recently. My best deal for an LX 4cyl 4dr MT was $17066 (Castle Honda) and her LX 4cyl 4dr AT cost her something around 17800 or so.

    Thanks lx_steal and richard :)
More maybe stupid questions:  :
should i buy insurance at dealer's place? or i should buy it before i buy the car?
can you recommend a good insurance company?
    thanks a bunch :D
  • indianriderindianrider Member Posts: 30
Definitely buy insurance outside after u purchase ur car. Take ur purchase agreement to a good company like State Farm, all state or do it online too with geico or progressive. Shop around. You might be able to just complete it online in 1/2 hour or so OR go to local insurance office with one of the big companies. You can also get the online quotes before you buy the car so you know what u are heading into. Go with comprehensive , collision etc since it is a new car. Good luck.

Thanks for reply... Last week i got a quote from Openroad for LX Auto model for $17053 (without destination)... That is the least i got so far... Looking for any other best deal.

    Thanks

I bought my insurance at the dealer. They had a contact at State Farm and just did it on the spot on the phone. But you can also get quotes from other companies with the car info and get the lowest quote before you go to the dealer - and let them know of the VIN after you make your purchase to get it on record.

Couple of insurance companies I can think of are State Farm, Geico, All State, Progressive... State Farm consistenly gave me lower quotes and I am with them for 6 years with no claims so my premiums went down quite a bit.
  • rain3rain3 Member Posts: 14
    Thanks a lot.
But they talked about the dealer's plate that can cover the car for one or two days. Is that a safe way to let me drive the car home on the day the deal is made?
    :confuse:

Contact some of the companies listed before... A company with a local agent will be the easiest to deal with, since you don't have a car yet... State Farm has always been good to me...

Tell them you are going to buy your first car, and will need insurance.. They will set you up, perhaps even giving you a "binder" (temporary insurance paperwork).. then, once you make the deal, you can call them with the VIN number, and you are covered.. Even if they are closed, you can leave a message on their answering machine, and you will still be covered, as long as you have arranged the insurance ahead of time...

I recommend not doing this at the dealer... While it will work, you won't have the advantage of shopping around for the best rates..

Call progressive. They will qupte their company and 3 others. Shop for insurance before you go in, then call to bind when you get the car.

Liberty Mutual and Nationwide are also good if you have perfect record.

I live in central Florida & am looking for an lx 4 dr accord . I see some guys have been able to buy at $17.2k otd + t&tags. Unable to find local dealers at that price.
Anyone know of dealers selling at this price. Seems it would be cheeper to buy an airline ticket that pay locally. Have $ will travel. Any ideas?

    thanks

I'm looking for the same in Orlando. So far I have a qoute for 18,200 + tax tag. A lot more than some of the posts are saying for places like New Jersey. Where have you gotten quotes so far and how much?

    Hi,
Got the lowest so far for me from openroad honda, NJ for $17053 + $515 destination + TTL

Were they easy enough to deal with. Anything hidden charges? How much obligated are you to them if you use them to find you a car? Thanks again

I've been browsing this site for a few weeks now and it has been incredibly helpful. Thank you to everyone who has contributed. I am in the market for a 2005, LX V6 automatic (coupe or sedan) but I haven't found any recent postings from anyone who has purchased this trim line (the LX V6). I am curious if anyone has an idea of what I can expect to pay for this trim? Also, I'm wondering if there is a reason not many people have purchased this trim line. Most of the postings are about the LX 4cyl or the EX. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Have a great day!

Keep in mind you are paying less than invoice , NJ and that too only at openroadhonda , has the deal of 17053 + 515 dest. Of course Lxsteal got it cheaper than that .I went to another dealer in PA and he said he has very few and will not sell for less than 18360, that the online quote he gave.
So it totally depends on how many 05 cars they have remaning. So to get the best deal try a huge dealer , who has better chances of on hand 05 inventory.

My insurance is giving me a 15% dicount on my policy if I have the MVID etching done on my windows for $317 total. So I am going for it.

    Hi Keri,
The LX-V6 is an oddball trim level. A dealer I was speaking with said for every 30 Accords, they get one LX-V6. I got the EX-V6 and its sweet, I would recommend spending the extra couple K on the EX, you will be thankful to enjoy a fancier car and for resale value. The demand is higher for the EX if you are getting the larger engine.

    Cheers,
    Tracy

Would you guys reccommend making an "out the door" offer to the dealer or first asking for his best price?

    Keri in Oklahoma,

A friend purchased a 4-Dr LX-V6 earlier this year for less than $22,700 OTD in Southern California. Hope this helps.

    Hello,

I just pulled the trigger on a 2005 Honda Accord EX (4cyl) without leather in Maryland for $21,539. This price was OTD including tax, tags, destination charge and the following options: pinstripe, door edge guards, wheel locks, mud flaps, front and rear all season floor matts, and a sunroof visor. I did the negotiating through the net.

Did I get a good deal, or did I get beat? Please discuss.

    Thanks

Anyone know if dealers in the NE are getting an extra spiff to move accords? I'm in MI and the deals in NJ and MD are FAR better (1.5-3k before tax) than anything I've seen here in the Midwest!
  • suzannaflsuzannafl Member Posts: 84
Based on Edmunds and this board, I am not unreasonable in what I want to pay for an Accord EX.

But I am getting a response that their price is "below invoice."
Which may be correct, but it's not good enough.
    Is there a "proper" response?

    Thanks,
    S
  • suzannaflsuzannafl Member Posts: 84
Most dealers say that they can get the Accord color that I want.
The dealer that has the best price wants a deposit to get the car that I want.

    Is this typical?

    Thanks,

If you are not a good negotiator, maybe you should buy it from carsdirect?
  • fuma20fuma20 Member Posts: 6
Jim Coleman Honda in Clarksville, MD.

I received a quote via their internet sales department. I then called Ourisman Honda and had them price match and then beat the Jim Coleman quote. Then called Jim Coleman back and had them match the quote from Ourisman Honda. I chose Jim Coleman simply because they are closer to my home than Ourisman.

    Hi

I just bought a new Honda accord. I am going through the extended warranty contract that the dealer gave me. It looks like most of the work has to be done at the same dealer? Also, it seems like only "Mechanical breakdown" is coverd. This seems fishy as any number of things could be classified as not being mechanical breakdown. does anybody have advice on this? Would much appreciate any help as this is my first new car !!

    Thanks.

You can back out of the warranty now...wait two years, and get honda care from a dealer online.

    Get out now!

You don't need an extended warranty yet.

Get one here in 2 years:

There are over a dozen Honda dealers in my area.
I've got a some with better prices than carsdirect, but not with the color I want.

Even though I don't buy a new car too often I still would like to get the best deal possible.
So have asked for a response to this statement, which must be routine since several of the dealers have used it.

    Hi all

I was curious about if carsdirect is the way to go if you can't get the price you want. Has anyone purchased a car from them? if so I'l really like to hear about the experience. Has anyone used carsdirect to negotiate with a dealer by telling the that you could get a better deal through carsdirect? Thanks for your help.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,778
You don't have to respond.. You could mention holdback.. the Honda to dealer incentive, etc, etc... But, why? Unless you think the dealer is unaware of his costs.. ;)

If your price is reasonable.. (say.. $18K on an LX auto 4 cyl.), then just tell them.. That is the price I want to pay... If you are on the lot, they likely won't let you walk out on that price..

If you are trying to do this by phone or e-mail, it will be easier, but not necessarily easier to actually get the price you want..

Thanks lx_steal for that info. I didn't sign it yet, I wanted to look through it before signing it. When I looked on warrantydirect.com, they said you could wait 2 years to get their warranty, but then it would cost more. What is your opinion on this? And I believe the contract the dealer gave me is infact Honda care. So do you have a good experience with them, ie do they promptly pay off your claims?

    Thanks.
  • nissantohondanissantohonda Member Posts: 4
Hi I bought my accord through carsdirect. It was a good experience, everything went smoothly. They got me a great deal in my area (michigan). I got an accord EX with leather, fully loaded, for 22,300 + TTL. My only complaint was that my vehicle specialist was on the west coast, so it is best if you arrange everything the previous day, and then go the next day to pick up the vehicle. In the end, we had to rush like crazy to get everything done.

Of course, if you want a particular color etc you will have to wait a few days till the dealer can locate one for you. I think I did talk to one dealer about using carsdirect price to negotiate with them. They were pretty arrogant about it, but you could definitely try other dealers and see if they are willing to negotiate.

    Tracy,

Thanks for the feedback. I think you are right, it is a rare oddball. I test drove the LX 4cyl and an EX V6 last night, and I decided to go with the LX 4cyl (I'm known for driving like a grandma anyway). Thank you again for responding.

    Have a good day!

My friend who asked me to go through carsdirect.com got 2 cars from them , a Lexus and a Jeep, both below invoice . In my case I got a better price than carsdirect quoted, so that was a nobrainer.
There 2 things you can do, once they give you a quote you hit the get local quotes and get dealers to beat or meet that price, is no one does then you can buy it from carsdirect.
Of course best would be to see what they quote , then get online quotes from all nearby dealers. If acrsdirect is still lowest , then throught their web site hit the "get quotes from local dealers" , that way carsdirect sends them their quote and they have a chance to beat that price.
  • nissantohondanissantohonda Member Posts: 4
Good point. I forgot to mention that, it's pretty useful. In my case nobody beat the carsdirect price.
  • tbird1tbird1 Member Posts: 9
I just spoke to a rep at CarsDirect and they told me that the CarsDirect price does not include th dealers fee of $400-$600 charged in Florida and Georgia. This means in my area for a LX 4A the CarsDirect price ends up being approx. $18,200 + say $500 or $18,700. Not so good.
  • capt41470capt41470 Member Posts: 38
Thank you for the advice guys, you have been very helpful! Especially since i'm going to get an 06 in September, it may be hard to get a car for the invoice price from dealers. So this definitly sounds like a good option!
  • rain3rain3 Member Posts: 14
I am in PA, but wanna buy from openroadhonda which is in NJ. Is there anything I should notice, like tax and tag, regarding this across-state purchase?

    Thanks for response :P
  • drivingenthudrivingenthu Member Posts: 17
I think you do not have to worry about anything, the dealer will see your PA license and register you there. At least thats what happend when I bought from Delaware way back.
Hey did you get an online quote from them? After that call them and ask if they will throw in the splash gaurds or trunk tray for free. Their price is the best so far, so they might , but before you walk into the showroom its good to negotiate.
