In Norcal, you may want to try Craigslist. Search for "2006 Honda Pilot" and you will see one or two dealers advertising them for sale.

Did you have a trade in on this deal?
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,755
price of the car itself is good.

like you said, accessories seem excessive, but its tough to say if you got a good deal overall since you are saying you got more for your trade.

Just ordered my 06 Pilot EX-L w/RES from Gilroy Honda, which is an hour and a half drive away. OTD Price is $35800 which includes all taxes/fees and Cross Bars, Air Deflector, Door Visors and 6 yr warranty. So far this was the best deal around. Other dealers were being jerks by pushing me to buy a color that I didn't want. Don't confine yourself within your area, because you'll probably get a better deal further away.

This site has really helped me with my purchase and I hope my input can help others as well.

yeah, I calculated the invoice on the accesories to be $1450....(based on various discount websites, BTW I ws getting estimates from other dealers >$2200)...if you calculate the intallation is another $400....(b/c the total came to $1800)...then it doesn't seem so bad...my trade-in book value was $695...(it was a sled)..he gave me $1000....so I felt it was a fair deal....OTD 33,761 (w/ a boat load of accesories)....not bad I guess...I'm happy...

Took delivery last night of a 2006 EX-L 4wd and used Edmund's internet price quote service. The best quote came from Jim Coleman Honda in Howard Co., I didn't do anything more and a week or so later in came another quote for $450 less, or $28,630 excluding freight and a $100 processing fee. I know I should have ditched the fee but didn't argue. If you're bypassing the bid process and call directly be sure to ask for the internet sales department. People there are very laid back but a bit disorganized so if you're travelling any distance call every time before you go to make sure they've got what you're looking for.

Took delievery of a Silver 05 EX-L AWD yesterday. Sent out an email inquiry to 10 dealers on Sunday. Received almost immediate responses (email or phone) from them all. Offers ranged from $26,623 to $29200. The best offer was from Honda World, Downey, CA. I went in yesterday and in no time made the deal. I must say that their internet sales department is a pleaure to deal with. Here is the itemized price:

    $26,623 - including destination charge
    $2063 - tax (7.75%, orange county, CA)
    $235 - licence and title
    $28 - electronic filling fee
    $45 - doc fee
    $8 - tire fee

The OTD price is $29003. Thanks to everybody on this forum for helpful information and advices!
  • crocro Member Posts: 9
No trades, even if i did have one i wouldn't tell them before negotiating the price.

I think $31,800 is an ok deal (if destination is included)...from what many dealerships told me, AWD is not as common as well as back with tan. Also i haven't seen too many with NAVI on the lot.

They also tried to bundle my vehicle with Protection Package (and charge $240) to which i said NO!

Your price for a 2006 Pilot EX-L seems to be $1,000 below invoice. Is that right?

Are there any incentives/marketing support being given by Honda right now for 2006 Pilots?
  • hankansanhankansan Member Posts: 4
Thanks for your help. I am in the Southeast and the best deal I have been given so far is 33000 incl destination and all fees except tax. The dealer's inv is about 32200 and the holdback is 3% approx 1000 so it looks like you have a really good deal with the dealer making about 600 unless there is some other incentives for the dealer. Thanks again

Great deal and thanks for sharing! Did you go through the internet department?

What is w/RES? Does it have DVD or Navi? Do they have many EX-L w/ Navi in stock? Thanks in advance for your help!
  • snowlisnowli Member Posts: 2
That sounds like a great deal. I'm was thinking of getting a 05 EXL too. Did all the dealers still have them or are they going away ?
  • jimzopsjimzops Member Posts: 39
Purchased a 06 EX-L with RES for 32600 (including destination/fess and mud guards) which is about 900 above invoice. In St. Louis there are no better deals to be had....
  • iwakuni29iwakuni29 Member Posts: 3
RES is the Rear Entertainment System (DVD) Package. I just started cold calling dealers that were further away after I got an idea in prices from people i know at the local dealers. I didn't ask about the Navi (got kids), but I'm sure they can get one for you. They didn't have color I wanted in stock (amazon green with olive leather) when I called but they found one the very next day.

Give'm a call. Gilroy Honda. Hope this helps.
  • crocro Member Posts: 9
From my research '06 Honda Pilot AWD EX-L with Navi is being sold by Honda Factory to Honda Dealerships for $30,650. Dealerships than post their invoice at $31,707 (original price they paid plus holdback) and MSRP is around $32,250. Don't let them include destination and doc prep fees into invoice.

Usually dealerships will get kickbacks based on number of vehicles they sell (example if a dealer sells 120 Pilots in 2 months they get $x,xxx back), same goes to option packages, leather etc.

I am happy with my price even though knowing that there was still probably few hundreds there they could do (but not at this time because the vehicle iss till fairly new).

Good Luck to all, have patience!!
  • gousa1989gousa1989 Member Posts: 3
Out of the ten dealers I emailed, only one said he is out of 05 models. In one of Honda World Downey's lots I saw seven 05 models. The one I got was actually swapped from their sister dealer Honda World Westmingster. I went along with the sales guy to take the car and saw in one of the Westmingster lots at least ten 05 models. Good luck.

Anyone received any quotes or deals from Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida
  • pilotdudepilotdude Member Posts: 3
Question: Does it matter if I buy my pilot from a further away dealer if I'm getting a good price? In other words, can I still go get my regular maintenance and warranties from another dealer that's closer to where I live. I don't want to drive far distances just to get oil change.

Of course I assume that I didn't buy any service plans from my original dealer.
  • markjennmarkjenn Member Posts: 1,142
For the most part, you can choose where you buy a car and where you service it completely independently. Your local Honda dealer will be happy to service a Pilot purchased across the state or across the country.

If by "service plan" you mean the standard HondaCare extended warranty, it is also honored at any Honda dealer in the US. And you don't need to buy the warranty at the time you buy the vehicle - you're free to buy it later and shop anywhere you like for it (with the exception of FL residents, but that's probably too complicated to get into here).

If by "service plan" you mean some type of dealer-specific free oil changes or the like, those are typically done by each dealer independently and are not transferrable. It all depends on whether the plan is with Honda or with the dealer.

Now, if you are a worrier, there are a few things you can worry about in separating your purchase and service dealers. First, if there are pre-delivery setup problems, your local dealer could be hard-nosed and be unwilling to correct these problems, but such problems are typically minor and a dealer isn't likely to be hard-nosed about this anyway. Second, many dealers do toss in some free oil changes or other freebies that are only good at the specific dealership. Third, you might find that your local dealer gives higher priority to customers who bought cars at the dealership. This might affect how quickly you can get an appointment, or whether they offer a free loaner car. Worst case, if you get into a dispute with Honda on a major warranty problem, a dealer will sometimes be more willing to go to bat for you with Honda if you bought the car from them.

Having pointed out all these things, they wouldn't be major factors in where I bought a car. But I would give the local dealer a shot at my business though and if they make a competitive offer, I'd go ahead and take it, even if I thought I might do a bit better elsewhere. Time and convenience may be a lot more important than saving $100. And if you drive the car home and spot an early problem, a local dealer will likely bend over backwards to make it right because they know you haven't filled out the customer satisfaction survey yet, and they're terrified of a black mark on these things.

We purchased our Pilot last week at Tempe Honda. The whole process was enjoyable and hassle free. Their initial quote thru the internet dept. was $100 below invoice, $29,102. Our salesman also threw in the rear cargo mat and tint for the two front windows prior to delivery. This deal was more than fair to us as I had set a target price of $29,202 (invoice)-and was happy to not have to negotiate back and forth. When we were looking it over we noticed there was a bubble in the tint on the passenger side window. The salesman told us they would take care of it, and since the shop would need it for 3-4 hours we would be provided a loaner vehicle, and receive a free tank of gas for our inconvenience. A few days ago we received a follow-up call from the dealer's customer service to set up the tint appt. and she offered us a dash mat for our inconvenience as well. As this dealer seems genuinely committed to good old-fashioned customer service, we will probably take our Pilot there for maintenance even though it's a little out of the way.
Now for the best part-the Pilot is great! The XM Radio is wonderful and we really like the layout and design of the interior as well as the leather seats. We made a quick 400 mile round-trip to Nogales on Wednesday. Cruise was set at 80 mph for the first 100 miles and 70-75 mph for the rest of the trip. Gas mileage was 25.7 MPG!

Out of curiosity, I would like to know what the honda dealers are offering in financing...I know it is dependent on credit rating and such....but I was curious if below 5.5% for 72 months (06 Pilot)...is still possible in this current market (w/ very good to excellent credit)....

    your comments would be appreciated
  • tombelltombell Member Posts: 7
I just learned today from my local dealer that the Honda finance rate is 5.85% for a credit score of 700. The rate scale when I was told at the dealers last week was between 5.85% and 12%. But they refused to run my credit score unless I agreed to purchase the vehicle. As I walked out I told that particular dealer "shouldn't I know what my cost will be prior to purchase". Sigh! PS:I'm going with MCU for 5.05%.

Sorry for my late reply - have been on vacation. Additional info to my original post (below):

    - No trade in.
    - Car was on the lot. It was the only LX they had. Lucky it was the color we wanted.
    - Mileage on the car was 8 miles. I put on another 8 during the test drive.

Not in Socal, but Norcal. Just signed contract today (pickup 12/20) for a Sage Brush Pearl '06 2WD LX for $23,998 + TTL (all other dealer fees included - no doc fee). Works out to be $846 below invoice. Cash deal.

Dealer was Walnut Creek Honda. I made an offer in writing, and they accepted. No upselling of anything else either. A truly great experience, up to now. I expect the delivery to run smoothly as well.

I just bought a Pilot EX-L in MA for $29,500, which is almost $800 below invoice ($30,280). I contacted a couple of dealers online. One offered me invoice price right off the bat but told me that if I got a better offer to call back. The other asked me to name my price, so I gave him the $29,500 number which was accepted right away. Makes me wonder whether I could have gotten it for less, but I'm happy with the deal.

Thanks to those who posted with pricing info. Especially helpful was knowing that there is a 3% holdback on the car, which made it easier to offer a price below invoice.

I just wanted to thank all involved with this forum for helping me to get a great deal on my new 2006 4WD EXL with DVD. I took it home yesterday and couldn't be happier with the whole experience.
The following are the details.--- Paid $31,117 + tax/tags. (Pilot was $30,269 + $550 delivery + $298 document fee.) No trade or finance involved. Purchased at Open Road Honda in Edison, NJ. They also had special the day I purchased, and they thru in free remote starter (about a $200 value). The deal was quoted via e-mail, then I went over to buy. Salesman was very nice and surprisingly didn't even discuss accessories. When I asked he brought over a price sheet and told me if I bought anything then, the best he could do was take 10% off their prices (which were high). I told him no thanks and have decided to purchase/install a few items myself with the help of the accessories forum.

When I went to business mgr. to sign all the papers, he tried to sell Honda Care warranty. When I told him I was going to buy online thru Bernardi, he agreed to match price of $1280 for 8 year 120k miles / $0 deductable. All in all this was a great experience with Open Road Honda. :)

you paid $1000 below invoice? if that's true, you got a great deal! congrats! i'll use that as my bargaining chip here on long island. good luck!
  • jimzopsjimzops Member Posts: 39
1k under invoice for an EX-L with RES. Maybe, but I think not.
My best freind is a Honda salesman here in St. Louis
and he said you may be able to pick it up in a few places for invoice (31.7) but has not herad of it going thru below invoice.
You must of got an "immaculate" deal.
  • pilothondapilothonda Member Posts: 8
Think again because that's what I paid. I don't know about pricing in different regions (St. Louis)or how low they can price. However; I do know what I paid ($31,117 + tax & tags)and I now have a real 2006 Honda Pilot 4WD EXLw/DVD in my driveway(Sage Brush by the way).

In addition, I'd like to point out that (being as I don't know anyone in these forums) there's absolutely no one I feel I have to impress nor do I gain anything by fictionalizing the purchase I made.

Also, as a note to laxcoach, I also live on the Island and the 1/2 dozen or so local dealers I contacted were not within $500. of the price I paid.

However; Hillside Honda in Queens and Bay Ridge Honda of Brooklyn both gave me written prices of $31,218 + tax/tags. The only reason I drove to Jersey, (besides the $100. which in itself would not have been worth the 75 minute drive), was that the day before I purchased, Open Road called to tell me about there free "Remote Starter" offer (1 day only) that they had. The $200 remote starter value + the $100. price difference made it worth the drive.

One thing anyone interested in buying from Open Road Honda in Edison, NJ must know, is that you have to have the quote in writing in order for them to honor the price. They tell you that on their website when you request what they call an "Instaquote". That was the first thing the internet salesperson asked me when I told them I was there to buy the car. They then took my copy of Instaquote and made copy a for there records. Other than that, there were no tricks, trades or high pressure sales pitch to buy anything other than what I came to buy. I came back a few days after working deal to pick up car, and salesman picked me up at local train station. An hour and a half later I was driving home in my new Pilot.

Once again, it was a very good experience and I will be happy to respond to anyone out there that has any questions. Without this forum, I would not have gotten such a good deal.
  • tombelltombell Member Posts: 7
Thanks for the summary Pilothonda, much appreciated. Did the $31,218 include destination?
  • andyrusandyrus Member Posts: 17
Congratulation Pilothonda on your new car!

Encouraged by your posting, I went today to the same dealership (Open Road Honda in Edison, NJ) looking for 2006 4WD Pilot EX-L/w Navi. The Internet price I have got - $31.7k (invoice) without destination. They would not negotiate down the price and they did not have the color I like.

Later today I have also have received e-mail from Route22Honda in Hillside, NJ offering the invoice price.
I will wait till next week. I hope they will be more agreeable closer to the month/year-end. ;)
  • laxcoachlaxcoach Member Posts: 36
pilothonda, like i said before that's a great price! you brought that price back to a long island dealership and no one matched it? how did you get the figure of $30.2k for the pilot when edmunds has the invoice as $31.2? doesn't matter, you got the starter, a great price, and a good experience to boot. what dealership on the island was best? thanks for the info!!!
  • clint6clint6 Member Posts: 4
Negotiated $23,000 for a 2005 Pilot LX, $25324.25 OTD (TTL + doc. fee) but when it came time to sign contract, finance guy wouldn't except E-loan check (claiming they didn't pay promptly, bad company, etc.) but would be able to offer me a "comparable rate" with their finacing. When I said no they killed the deal.

Anyone have a similiar problem in the NY tri-state area?
  • bar7bar7 Member Posts: 5
Thanks for all the info this forum has provided. I just purchased a pearl black 06 Pilot EX-L AWD with Navi in MD. I have been going back and forth with a few dealers over the last few months(pays to be patient) but finally found one of the dealers willing to work with me. They had the Pilot with the color(black with saddle interior and NAVI) on order and comming in by the end of the year. I gave them a deposit(on cc and made sure it was refundable) to hold the car. They also promised to get me the VIN as soon as car was produced (sure enough within a few days they e-mailed me the VIN). The car was suppose to come in before the end of the year(put deposit down on 12/10/05) but actually came in on Sunday(12/17/05). My price was $30,986.40 including destination plus tags, taxes.
  • pilothondapilothonda Member Posts: 8
Yes. At both Hillside and Bay Ridge $31,218 included everything but tax/tags.

Hillside actually solicited me with their price via an e-mail ad a few days before I purchased at Open Road. I did call and spoke to their internet salesperson to firm up the details and availability.

With Bay Ridge I called the sales mgr. (not salesperson)on a recommendation from a friend. When I asked for a price he quoted me $31,918 + tax/tags. When I told him I was quoted 31,117 in Jersey he guessed it was "Open Road" and proceeded to warn me of all the potential pitfalls of buying from them. He then immediately dropped the price $700. to $31,218. and said why drive to Jersey which was about another 1/2 hour further from my home.

This probably would have worked for me, if I hadn't received the call from Open Road an hour later regarding their free remote starter. In fact, my plan was to go to Bay Ridge if something went wrong with Open Road. However, nothing went wrong.
  • jacpotjacpot Member Posts: 5
I just got an email from an internet sales person and he said Honda will be having special end of year financing as low as 2.9% starting 12-22-05.

I'm planning on getting an EXL w/Navi, but the lowest offer I have gotten in Phoenix, AZ is $200 above invoices. If anyone in AZ have gotten a better deal, please post dealer name. Thanks.
  • pilothondapilothonda Member Posts: 8
Dealer prices on the Island tended to fluctuate by the week over the several months I was looking around. I got a price of 32,218 on Oct.9 from Honda City and when I asked on 12-9 they quoted me $32,518. (You would think their price would go down at the end of the year.)

Huntington probably had the most competitive prices when I checked in Oct. and Nov. However, I couldn't get anyone to return my calls the 2 days before I purchased. (They did call 2 days after I purchased.)

If I were you I would request quote (via e-mail) from Hillside. They are in Jamaica, only 10 minutes past the Nassau border. See what kind of a quote you get and (if good),use it to bargain with your local dealers.

Good Luck and let us know how it turns out.
  • jlaabsjlaabs Member Posts: 5
Have you tried Tempe Honda's internet dept. yet? Although it didn't have NAVI, we bought an EX-L 2WD for $100 below invoice on Dec. 10th. They may be willing to do the same with regards to invoice on the one you want. Buying and delivery process was enjoyable.

We took the Pilot on a round-trip to Nogales
last week. We like everything about it. Nice ride. Leather seats are comfortable. Good cockpit layout-easy to get used to. XM radio is nice(3 months free). Pleasantly surprised by gas mileage, 25.7 MPG. Cruised at various
speeds between 70-80 MPH. So far so good.
    Good luck!

yes, we have had a couple of Honda dealers tell us they won't accept Eloan.

However, if the dealer said they would match Eloan's rate, why did you turn it down?

  • clint6clint6 Member Posts: 4
They never said they would match, but rather just try to get me a "comparable rate" which by the way things were going would never be as low as the rate I got from Eloan (I qualified for their lowest rate)

    Thanks for the reply
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,755
    ah, ok.

yeah, i don't know what the problem is with some dealers. I never did get to use Eloan, but I've used peoplefirst (now capitalone) in the past and the dealer accepted it gladly and never reported a problem (this was a volvo dealer).

I'm not sure if eloan is any different. According to eloan, they run the same process. I think some dealers are apprehensive based on some internet lending practices I heard about many years ago. Seems some banks used promisory notes and dealers had to jump through hoops to get paid. As far as I know, places like capitalone and eloan send you real blank checks ... meaning the dealer merely need to deposit it. I believe some dealers have just become gunshy altogether of online banks, unfortunately.

That price sounds to good to be true. The invoice on the EX-L Navi is almost 32k. Tax in Maryland is 5%. Based on what you are saying, your price BEFORE TTL was 28-29k. I'd love to know the name of the dealer/salesperson (you can email me salesperson's name-I live in Md and will probably buy in January).

First of All, Thanks for the info on this board. The research and information helped greatly. I just purchased through the internet dealer, a 2006 2WD EXL Pilot for basically less than 28k about 700 less than invoice(destination, mud guards, wheel locks, protection pack included). The fees left are the tax, doc fee, license and tire fee. The color I wanted in particular wasn't in stock but it didn't matter because it was a family car and everyone wanted a different color. The color that no one had objections to was in stock and we got that one. Now deciding if to get extended warranty or not.
