I found that a lot of people have benefited from this forum. I've received a final dealer price of $29,000 + T&L for a 2006 Pilot EXL 4WD w/Nav from a dealer in Bay area, after a long haggle. I would greatly appreciate if some one could let me know if i should buy at this price or if anyone got a better deal around this area. Thank you!
I just got the Honda Pilot ex-l with Navi right outside of Philly. $28,310. They weren't allowed to lower this price anymore..at least thats what I was told. But they gave me an extra $500 for my trade. I had my trade appraised at about 10 other dealers. I was generally offered about 10k-11.4k They offered me 11k, after much negotiation with the car price and trade price, I got the trade up to 12k. Had to take the last one on the lot though.
Few people told me don't buy from Martin and I never asked why.
Then I heard today they get cars that were damaged in transit. The damage has to be less than 1k and then they fix the car. If this is the case they can then sell the car as brand new. With so many "damaged cars" they get better discounts than other honda dealerships, and are often able to offer prices that other Honda dealerships can not match.
They also don't have to disclose the damage, even when asked.
Can anybody advise if Scotchguard is a smart move on new carpets and floor mats? Just got new Pilot EX-L from Reliance and want to take best care of it.
what was the trade? the trade is my big problem, kbb trade value is 10+ but the local dealers are under 8. one called me back to ask me to come back into the deanship so he could have his manager appraise it again, for his brother, a chevy manager wher he thought he could get a better price,,,, sounds shaky to me
alanrosenberg. Type up a detailed description of trade. It's about time you had a solid numer on it. I will adjust for your region.
Also... Try this... Take your Chevy to at least 2-3 dealerships and ask for the Used Car Manager. Make sure you are taking it to GM dealers as they will have the best chance of selling it and should have lower reconditioning costs since it is their brand. Get buy bids from them of what they would purchase it for. Depending on the state you are in you can still trade it at the dealer and they can wholesale your trade for the value you received. You can also "Shop" your trade-in with smaller "tote-the-note" lots who buy from larger dealerships for their inventory. If you can find the right buyer then you are all set. If all of the numbers come back around what the original dealers are offering then they are giving the appropriate "fair market value" for your vehicle. Some vehicles just won't bring the money depending on market conditions.
I honesty don't know the answer to that one. I would think that the foot traffic for Floor Mats would be too much for scotchguard and you would have odd dirt marks where it got through. Carpet doesn't seem like a big deal to scotchguard. May want to check with your local dealer.
The Anonymous Dealer
Or you could buy All Season Floor mats from Honda!
Tombonz, do you mind me asking at which dealership you ended up buying? I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger on the same car and would be interested in where you got that price. Thanks is advance.
thanks, I'll do that,,, so even if I do not want to buy a chevy, they may make an offer of buying my trailblazer? What about trying to sell it myself retail? I've run an ad on craigslist for 10.5 [kbb retail is 12+, trade is 10+] but got no calls. the seattle PI has a 50 buck run till you sell it online and paper ad--- the honda dealers are offering about 7.5 to 8k---this is for a 2002 chevy trailblazer, 2wd [bad up here] LS with 67,000 miles on it in good shape.
Important: KBB (in my opinion) Mis-appraises vehicles when you are either over or under mileage according to natl averages. Had an 03 Wrangler on my lot KBB said 4,500 value sold it at auction for 13,000!!! It was over mileage. Another car: 03 Toyota Highlander way under miles KBB said 17,500.00 car goes at auction for 15,500.00 with current condition. (inside awesome outside ehh)
That being said Trailblazers are not the best merchandise for an import store. A chevy store can give you a "buy bid" and they can wholesale the trailblazer to them.
Think about it this way. Guy comes in for a brand new Pilot... gets sticker shock or has less than stellar credit. Which car is he gonna buy? 2002 Trailblazer or 2002 Pilot? Same with Chevy store... at the chevy store he is gonna go for the slightly used brand he was after!
The Anonymous Dealer
All things considered your Trailblazer sells at auction for about 8,900.00 - 9,200.00 Also keep in mind that once we trade in these vehicles we usually spend 500-1500 in our service departments!!!! The older they get and the more miles they have on them... sheesh!
I can only hope I've dotted my "i"'s and crossed my "t"'s. I checked with Sussman Honda and dealer assures me that Honda 3yr- 36,000 mile (bumper to Bumper)and 60,000 power train warranty is honored in US, CANADA and MEXICO and is transferable should I sell it later on.
Anyway I will be picking up my ride on the 26th of July in Philadelphia. So then I'll know if all is as they promised. If not, I'm back on the plane home, sadder but wiser. However i'm optimistic.
As for the temporary tag, that is available from Sussman ($20). However I do have a business in Oregon so may just transfer the plates and insurance to Pilot for trip home to B.C. I'll be checking with State Farm in OR. on monday.
As I will be transporting Pilot out of US I do not have to pay any state/federal taxes until I get the double whammy in Canada. Also Oregon has no state tax so that is an option I am examining for the short term.
Now if you are a Canadian, thinking of buying a US vehicle and importing it to Canada, you must check out the Canadian Import site at www.riv.ca to see all the requirements you must fulfill to import. It is a lot simpler than it appears. The biggest, most expensive thing is to ensure you get the Daytime headlights installed. (Sussman charged me $248 US for the Pilot vs $500+/- in Canada.) And check to ensure that the vehicle you purchase at least has a restraint latch in the vehicle. You can buy the infant restraint kit for the latch in Canada. Also you need your dealer to supply a "Recall Clearance Letter" on dealer letterhead with the Honda logo. Anyway before you do any real looking or dealing aquaint youself with the site. And you have 45 days after you enter Canada to meet all requirements anyway.
Wow. It is long trip. Philly-Oregan-Canada. Hope everything is smooth with you. It seem all clear with info from anonymous dealer. What a great forum. good night everyone
well its a long trip but it's combined with some holiday so there is a strong element of pleasure involved. Besides I got a red-eye flight out of Seattle to Philly for $198 total. Head out west! there is still a lot of open country and wide vistas out here. Theres places out here where I've driven a highway for over two hours and never seen another vehicle!
good luck and thanks for all the info lawrencej, I've heard mixed statements on vehicles being imported into Canada. From the warranty being completely void to the warranty only being valid in the USA and now the vehicle having full warranty in North America. Keep us informed on your progress!
Lawrence, good luck with your trip ! I really hope you do not have any issues with your warranty. Anyhow, Hondas rarely have any major issues and you can always cross the border and perform warranty work in Washington ! I do believe that if you have an address in the US you can always REGISTER your warranty in the US and go have your work done in the US. I do not believe that the Registration process for your warranty has anything to do with the import process. Anyone out there please correct me if I am wrong ! The other thing you can consider is buying the extended warranty from the US (online) which is valid in Canada and US. Have a great trip and keep us informed of your story !
Thanks everyone. Today i finally got my Pilot EXL AWD w/Nav for $29000 but i also wanted some things installed (u can call little fancy) like the running boards, woodgrain trim and 6 year extended warranty which cost me another $3000 + TTL.....all in all i paid $35000 OTD. I hope i did ok.
Sorry to bear a bad news but this is a direct quote from my Pilot's warranty book. General Warranty Provisions
"The warranties in this book do not cover:"
. "Any vehicle while it is registered or normally driven outside the United States, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands."
I purchased a 3rd party warranty from the dealer for $1295 (4yr/60,000 miles)
Be careful on that drive from Philly to the West Coast. Vary your revs and don't use cruise control, you will still be breaking in that new engine and a long trip like that isn't the best way to do it.
I had a 2002 chrysler 300m special with 40k miles. Edmunds (using "clean" condiion) trade in value is 11,813, private party is 13,456, dealer retail is 14,964.
Average condition is only 10,384 trade in value.
I let 2 dealerships basically bid it out on my car. The one dealership told me they would just have the wholesaler pay a little more for my car and then give him a break on the other trades, so he told me to come in on a busy day when they have a lot of trades, then the wholesaler wouldnt mind.
Got it from Connicelli. Although Martin Main Line said they would beat any price from Connicelli. Connicelli even said that they are often unable to match Martin's prices.
According to them Martin receives a bigger discount bc they deal with a lot of cars damaged (<1k in damages)in transit, and they just make the repairs themselves. They also don't have to disclose what was damaged. Who knows if that is true.
Few reasons for buying it from Connicelli though, closer, didn't have to wait for the car, and felt more comfortable with them. At most Martin would have been $100-$500 cheaper. Martin told me proabably be $500 cheaper but couldn't guarantee it until I was in there and ready to do the deal.
I must admit this is a very disturbing revelation. The internet dealer at Sussman Honda assured me in writing that the warranty is "3year/36,000 comprehensive (bumper to bumper) and 5-year/60,000 powertrain and is transferable should you sell the vehicle. This came via e-mail as a confirmation of a verbal assurance that it was also valid in Canada and Mexico as well as the US. At this point I don't doubt his veracity but I will talk with him Monday morning and hopefully confirm that it will be valid registered in Canada and that I won't have pony up some more $$$$ for a 3rd party warranty.
Anyone else out there able to get the warranty validated in Canada. Perhaps dwilliam "The Anonymous Dealer" can respond? :surprise:

I wish it was true. Ask your dealer to check page 12 of the warranty book or take a look at it yourself when you get there. Might give you some extra bargaining power.
VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FOR THE U.S. ARE INTENDED FOR SALE IN THE U.S. AND WARRANTIES FOLLOW.
Most manufacturer's offer vehicles worldwide and therefore have different rules depending upon region/country/continent. don't fool yourself into thinking you have no issues because you are adjacent to the U.S.
That is all
The Anonymous Dealer
p.s. how are you looking for bargaining power? It's not their fault you want to export a vehicle.
You want another P.S. A dealers "verbal confirmation" does not entitle a customer to recompense because the dealer invalidates their resposibility to the the manufacturers warranty immediately upon purchase. Warranties are between manufacturer and customer and therefore defers directly to the owners manual.
Had a pleasurable experience picking up my EXL-w/DVD from the folks at Reliance. The process of getting quotes and price agreement over the internet was too easy. They were as low in their quote as any other dealers I received quotes from (which was many), but their sales attitude was what won me over. The vehicle was ready for me this past Saturday the 15th. It was outfitted with a host of accessories that my wife preferred. Won many praises from the host of sales people by saying it was the sharpest looking Pilot they had ever seen. My hat is off to the Sales Manager and his staff for making our 240 mile trip from Waskom, Tx worthwhile. By the way I visited my son in Houston, so it was a win win trip. My son made the trip to the show room with us, and ordered him one also. His soon to be fiance, was also hot on the trail of a civic, that I expect her to purchase from this dealership very soon. Now the numbers. Our agreed on price for the EXL w/DVD was $28,320, before taxes, registration. The accessories were installed with no problems or unexpected price spikes. The final drive out the door price for the best looking Honda in Texas was $34,398.
If a deposit (said to be fully refundable) is made on a Pilot in another city (because it was a lot cheaper) and then the local dealer matches the price, can I pull out of the first deal?
It will save me money to buy locally, and the deposit is said to be refundable, thought I dont know how easy it will be to get refund, but I also wrestle with the ethical side of this. Maybe the Anonymous Dealer can respond.
OUCH!!!! I emailed him last night so should get his response when I get home. I definitely was told it was valid throughout North America and was included in the price so maybe I've got some wiggle room to bargain with.
How about if I say "!!I'll give you anything!!; that's my final offer!!"?
Check the laws in NY. Make darn sure it applies specifically to AUTOMOBILE purchases. To my knowledge that is MYTH and does NOT. The 3 day right of withdraw applies to several types of contractual obligations but does not extend to automotive purchases at a dealership!
As far as deposits go. Any honest dealer would refund your deposit and wish you well in your purchase.
Actually my purchase is in Illinois, and the offer sheet I was faxed prior to my making deposit clearly stated the deposit was fully refundable. So from a legal point of view I feel safe.
However, I want that dealers deal with me honestly and ethically, and i would like to do the same. If I cancelled a deal on which I put down a deposit, albeit refundable, feel I had dealth with him unethically if I decide to buy where I got an equally good deal but in the city I live in?
would the dealer in this case feel I dealth with him unethically if i cancel the deal, or would he think thats part of the business, and simply feel good he had a car to sell to someone else?
Well I stand corrected and defer to dwilliam. And I accept the explanation that I am the first Canuck sale for the dealer. It will be a learning experience for both of us. Now i've got some bargaining to do. :confuse:
Thanks for all the info. even if a little disappointing. It sure saved me the nasty surprise I would have had on arrival in Philly.
At the risk of repeating myself, WHAT A GREAT SITE!!! So informative, so helpful! Kudos to KarenS, car man and kyfdx and all of you out there helping to demystify the car buying process
Thanks to this board... what a great help ya'll have been posting numbers and experience... wasn't able to get mine the cheapest in here but I'm comfortable with the price.. msrp on window was $36,000... I always thought they would not budge on sticker much buying a honda... because resale and quality is so good... my final deal ended up being $29,700 with mud guards (almost $200) out the door with no extended warranties or anything was.... $32,400..... compared to $36,000 plus ttl.... wow!!! love my new pilot.... thanks to all....
They may feel like you were unethical to be honest. However, it is NOT unethical for you to do what is best for yourself. If you really, really like the dealer then you can still buy from them. Or maybe send 'em a fruit basket :P
Once again... DO NOT FEEL BAD! It's your money, your car, and your time! It is part of business and if they try to MAKE you feel guilty it is their shortcoming and not yours!
In in Northern CA and will be purchasing a 2006 Pilot EX-L, 2wd w/RES tomorrow. The best price I was able to negotiate was $27,136 (+tax/lic). Based on what I've read in this forum that price seems fair... any comments???
>>>The 3 day right of withdraw applies to several types of contractual obligations but does not extend to automotive purchases at a dealership! <<<
T.A.D. is correct.
In Texas, the 3-day (72 hour) rule only applies if the sale takes place at a location OTHER THAN the seller's normal business location. This is to protect you from people selling $1500 encyclopedias that show up at your door, or at the State Fair, using high-pressure sales tactics.
If you go to a dealer's lot it is presumed you are a willing partner in the deal. The instant you drive away in a vehicle titled to you, the car is yours like it or not. It is the act of titling (not driving off the lot) that makes a new car a used car. It's not the dealer's fault if you have buyer's remorse.
Honda (and Acura) does not allow warranty transfer to Canada. It is for this reason, I ended up purchasing a Lexus RX330 instead of Acura MDX. Lexus and Toyota allow warranty transfer. Subaru does as well. There are some ways of getting Honda warranty transferred ... one is for US residents who purchase the Honda in the US and then if they move to Canada, the warranty can be transferred. Even in those cases, they will not allow ownership change and warranty transfer. Honda of America and Canada appear to have thought this through to prevent cross border shoppers. If you live close to the US border, you can always take the car to the US for major warranty work. I did not research on whether if you purchase the car and give Honda a US address... and if you need any warranty work, for you to pre-pay in Canada and claim the expenses from Honda America. There are many manufacturers who are willing to allow warranty transfers... go and find an alternate.
Would appreciate helpful info. Livivig on Long Island and about to purchase my second honda within the same month. First purchase was 06' civic sedan ex for 19,300..now interested in the Pilot 06' EX-L quoted me at 30,200 with 0.00% APR. My trade in for my 2006 Chevy Trailblazer LS 11,000 miles is 16,000, which I dont like and dealer is not bargining well with me.I want nav. system in truck, but dont wanna pay the extra 2 grand. Do u think the Pilot is a good NY price? I wish they would give me more on my Trailblazer.
Has anyone had experience in the Tulsa, OK area with the Honda dealers? I am looking for a 2WD EXL in Sage or Black with grey interior and no "add-ons".
The dealer is giving you the business .First things first he has to sell cars more than you have to buy a car.Second Honda is offering 1.5k to 3k to the dealers until 7/31 on every Pilot . Third why are talking trade and the fact that you dont like the car to the dealer. If he sells the car at msrp then gets 3 k he is killing you . Honda has low finacing deals this month also . It;s the end of the quarter the numbers have to be right . You should look for 1.5k to 2k off the msrp. Last remember the sales man is juggling three balls but you only have your eye on one the purchase price of the car.He has three ways to get the price of the car , the trade and the backend . Any questions email me biglou13@hotmail.com . I planning to purchase during the last week of this month and I reside on Long Island also .I hope you didnt try hillside honda or the dealer in Hempstead .
Comments
Had to take the last one on the lot though.
Few people told me don't buy from Martin and I never asked why.
Then I heard today they get cars that were damaged in transit. The damage has to be less than 1k and then they fix the car. If this is the case they can then sell the car as brand new. With so many "damaged cars" they get better discounts than other honda dealerships, and are often able to offer prices that other Honda dealerships can not match.
They also don't have to disclose the damage, even when asked.
Has anyone heard this?
Thanks!
Also...
