I kinda disagree with the bedliner. My cousin works construction has a gmc sonoma with a spray in. Throws tool boxes equipment and materials in now for about a yr. Not a single dent not saying they dont or cant happen. I wouldnt throw things in whether its a drop in or spray in why abuse the truck??? GOtta make things last. Take care of things i think they both have their advantages and disadvantages. The one in my case thats huge is the rusting of the bed due to rain and snow thats why i am going spray in.

I know about the dinner talks my uncle and grandpa used to always get into it about chevy and toyota. I had to side with my uncle.

Tim we all know which is the best and youve got it dont let them talk trash

does the 2wd 2500 come with these damn fender flares or is it just the 4x4's ? Don't remember anything showing a 2wd w/fender flares.

Ryan: That webpage does not have any photos of the Silverado w/fender flare mud flaps or just the mud flaps. The molded design looks similar to what Chevy offers. But wasn't there a post a while back about the molded mud flaps rubbing the paint off ? Now where was that?

I have had the BackCountrys for six or seven months now, so far they hold up well.

As far as liners, I have a Rhino. So far, so good. But I don't worry too much about the apperance of it because I have a vinyl tonneau cover from Sportmasters. Really like it a lot - much better than the GM one I bought a few years back for my S-10. If I need to haul anything that won't fit under the cover, just roll it up and secure it with the velcro straps at the front of the bed.

Your bed can definitely get dented easier with a coating compared to a drop-in.

But what I really want to say about them, is to check the reputation of the installer carefully. One thing I have noticed, is that many of the coatings are thinner than the 3/16 to 1/4 inch advertised.

double or triple sprayed with these spray in products that make them more durable. Don't know a whole lot about them, but thought that it was a good idea. How do you guys keep up with all these posts?? This topic just flys!!!

see #274 for details. ordered everything but engine heater and HD shocks. I'll never go off road with it. who would. Don't want to scratch the paint. I had a friend years ago who bought a new blazer (early 70's when they were big) and he used to make his own roads through the trees with it. don't know how he could do it but he certainly got alot of use out of it.
I ordered a 3 dr. 2500. found out yesterday that they aren't making 3 drs. anymore. Add 300 to the price. gotta go to dealer tonite and hash this one out.

Hey quadrunner500, thanks for the good info. I
will give the dealership in Salida a call. I will be ordering a new Silverado in a few weeks,
and now that you mention allocations, how can I
find out who has them prior to ordering or is it not possible?

Also, how do work down to 2% over invoice from the MSRP? That is a big jump. Do you play the
back and forth game with them till you get there? I usually go in and say I would like to see the invoice and after getting it I offer them 2% over. Not right?

I could use another lesson in buying, I guess, ha ha! Anything to save money, right?

    Thanks,

    Gary

dealer is selling me one for $300. $600 seems alot for a liner. Also, do the off brands have the slots built in the sides to slip 2x stock into so you can make a shelf or stop loads from shifting?
  • gwyatt1gwyatt1 Member Posts: 22
I will be ordering my Silverado real soon, but this rough idling is a concern of mine, has anyone that has had problems with this gotten the
    problem fixed?
  • clarkmcbrayerclarkmcbrayer Member Posts: 22
Why would you want a 3rd door instead of one with the 4 door. That is why I waited to order mine. I talked with people that have 3rd door. They wish they had 4. If 3rd door is what you want, you can buy one at the dealer if you can handle the equipment and color they have. You can probably get a better deal on 3rd door. Others will be trying to get 4 door model.
  • rbrickrbrick Member Posts: 32
    bluebeast,
go to www.trucktrend.com and read the article titled "Silverado build-up ideas." I believe they installed a set of JBA headers. Said it was easy.

    majormorgy,
When did you get an order number? I also ordered the week before x-mas and just got an order number last week. I called GM and asked about making changes. I was told that the dealer only had 4 days to make any changes. I had to order the blackwalls instead of WOL tires. I figured since it was in the system, maybe I could change it.

    2000ryan,
Like I have said earlier (forget the post#. too lazy to look), I ordered a 1500 Ext Cab, Z71, autotrac, 5.3, etc. When my order was not accepted in a month I asked why. The truck manager had a list of options that were not being accepted that particular week. It ended up being the white letter tires. I guess GM did not have enough to build every order. So, I conceded and ordered with the blackwalls (265's). You should check with your dealer and see what options are holding up your order. Maybe it is something you can live without (like tires).

Thanks all for the Chevy/Duarliner info....

That's the best arguement for not getting the spray-in liner. You're not going to carry anything with it anyway, so why spend the money?

I've never seen rust under a good drop-in ... including my old S-10 that had one for 9 years before I sold it. Water (the little that might get trapped) runs right out from under it.

Spray-ins look nice. I wouldn't waste my money on one.

I live here in Wisconsin, there's a Cap Dealer Named Lakeland that has started using a very thin rubber mat that goes under your drop in liner, no paint wear. I'll look around see if they have an email address. The Company's Headquarters are in Greenbush, Wisc. (approx. 300 pop.)
  • majormorgymajormorgy Member Posts: 30
i haven't got the order # yet. i went to dealer tonite but the salesman there couldn't help me so i'm going to work late tomorrow and going in to see the manager. i was told that the dealer and i have till tomorrow to make any changes. don't really know how it works but i assume we look over the order and make sure everything is ok as is. i know the factory was closed for two weeks for xmas, new years. sounds like we should get our trucks about the same time. probably first part of march.
  • majormorgymajormorgy Member Posts: 30
i really did want the 4 door model but the salesman said it wasn't available yet (at the time) and he did have a code number for it. he did say that he thought the fourth door would eventually be standard so as to compete with ford. they come standard with 4 doors.
the other thing the salesman said was that the c/k would be fazzed out this year.
one thing i widh they offered are ICC lights. can't get them on the silverado but you can get them on the c/k. seems odd to spend all this money for their (top of the line) truck and not have ICC lights available. don't really want to have them put on as an afterthought. i'd rather have them factory installed. oh well. when do you expect to get yours? good luck!
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
If they don't have the allocation, they can't give you a GM order number. If they do have an allocation, GM will pick up the order within a month or so. So just start by asking them if they have one, you'd like to special order a truck.
They will want you to look at one on the lot. I do, in fairness. Good time for a test drive. But if they do have one on a lot, you won't have a chance to look the cost up if you start negotiating on it right then and there. You might not want to let it get away. Then again, if you think it over, get cost from the internet, you can phone in an offer which is also a good tactic.

You will have to go back and forth a few times on the negotiation. But if you start with a fair offer amounting to 2% over invoice, just stick to your guns. They will ask again and again if you can improve your offer a little, so the salesman can be paid a commission etc. If you don't make any progress, don't assume they won't make the deal eventually, as long as they try and hold you captive. If they let you walk, be polite, tell them if you can't make the deal they turned down somewhere elsewhere, you'll keep them in mind for a second chance. They will be knocking on the window of your car door, asking you to come back inside. They always do. Don't leave a big deposit. $250 is enough, some say less, I've left more when I hoped it would make a difference toward a faster delivery. It doesn't. Good luck!
  • clarkmcbrayerclarkmcbrayer Member Posts: 22
Ordered mine on 10/29/99. Dealer called on Wednesday to tell me the Invoice was in. He said after invoice arrives, the truck usually arrives 7-10 days later.

As far as the 4th door goes. They say standard equipment, then charge $330 extra. I knew what the price of the 4th door before my salesman did. Go figure. He said they had not been sent the information. I pointed out to him the sticker on a 3rd door version on the lot versus the MSRP sheet he showed me on mine. Kind of scary that I had to figure it out for the salesman.

What are you going to do? What are you going to get?

We finally got some rain here so I took the opportunity to test the anti-lock brakes. First tried in the mud, about 30mph and slam on. It just stopped. No ill behavior at all and not much pedal vibration. Then went about 40mph with 2 wheels on the road and 2 on the mud shoulder. Slam hard and again it just stops with no pull to the side or anything. Very nice, I'm pleased.
  • kit1404kit1404 Member Posts: 124
I have only had a few occasions to use my 4-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock on my 1999 F-150 4X4, but they work extremely well. My occasions have been either in mud, snow, ice or more recently just not paying attention out in the country on a wash-boarded gravel road. Have yet to feel any of the old pulsing - the truck just stops, in my case generally where I wanted it to stop before I realized I might have a problem. Great feel, great brakes.
  • majormorgymajormorgy Member Posts: 30
i'm going to get the 4th door if we can come to an agrement. otherwise i'll cancel the order and go somewhere else. i found a dealer who will sell for $500 over invoice so if it comes to that i'll go there and wait another 2 months. i have wheels so i'm not in a hurry. of course, once the order goes in you want it right away.
anyway, i'm going in to see one of the owners this morning to hash this out. let you know how i do. i work outside and it's only 0 deg. this morning so maybe it will warm up a little by the time i'm finished. only suppose to reach 19-20. Brrrr.... could use those heated leather seats now!
you waited 3 months for yours. you must be getting antsy.

    Make things last?
Hell...the last drop in I had for a decade..and the truck..it hauled everything and anything you could imagine. The liner was scratched quite a bit..but I assure you a spray in would have been trashed beyond recognition by then.
I love the idea. When I first heard of them about 4 years ago..I wanted one without even seeing it. As I found out more...I decided to pass. As time has gone by and I have been able to hear more stories...I'm really glad I passed.
    Great Idea...looks great..fits perfect..doesn't move...Problem is..doesn't protect for squat!
You can get them sprayed thicker I'd guess...but do you know what happens to paint that is sprayed thicker?
When Ryan says he woudn't drop stuff in...well..I don't throw it in either...but some things are not avoidable for abuse. I needed some large rocks (maybe 80lbs. each) from the local nursery. he scooped them up and just dumped them in..it made a lot of noise and made me wonder...but nothing happened.....try that with a spray in.

I have hauled countless loads of Dirt...shoveled it out..no problems. Guess I could be super easy on the Liner and take small shovel loads to not harm the disco spray in?....nahhh.

Last summer I need about 8 yards of 21AA crushed concrete for a good base for pavers. Now this stuff is heavy, sharp corners, and compacts like cement.8 scoops of that being dumped in with a spray in and with as hard as you have to dig the shovel in...no way a spray in will last the shovel torture.
Now you may say "I'll never haul that stuff"...if all you are going to haul is boxes once in a while..why not get a rubber bed mat? I see so many people afraid to use the bed of a truck it's pathetic.
Even things you will do may be harmful to a spray in. Take moving furniture for example. You know those metal feet? Get one of those scraping along as you slide it into the bed. You can say that OK.."I'll just make sure nothing gets to slide in"..yeah right.
Father in law has the better spray in...a Line X...he went to get a light pallet one day..about 200 pounds..they put in in..and push it the rest of the way...pallet had a nail...scraped all the way down to the metal for about 2 feet. He had it repaired...if you had a drop in..there would be no repair.
With a drop in..if there is a nail or a foot or whatever sticking out...you have a 50% chance it will be in one of the grooves...or maybe due to the round rails...it may fall into them.
Other week I moved a Unit heater (you know..large heater on the cieling of shops) I'd say about the weight of a washer or so. We stuck it in and tried to slide...no go. We puched really hard and it finally gave...turned out it has a sharp corner that was digging into the liner. it didn't puncture it..but put a haze like scratch...and then slid into the groove. Would have been a mess with a spray in.

A drop in will not rust away your bed Ryan...trust me.
Why do you think spray ins come in colors and now glow in the dark?....cuz they are too damn disco and are for looks....not use.

If you want to waste the money and look pretty...but can't haul more than you could with a rubber bed mat...then waste away.
I'd like one someday...but not until they can prove to me they are worthy.
Although I do like the look of the rails in a drop in....as for colors...no thanks..I'll take the Henry Ford Logo..."You can have it in any color you want.....as long as it is Black."

    End of discussion...(For me)

    Major,
For $300 you should be able to get a Duraliner...which does have the slots for inserting dividers...as well as the ones for makes two layers. Most other brands don't have the slots. Some do...but most don't.

    Bowhunt,
Yeah...Quad said something about that liner for underneith...but I never did get one. Just stick a liner in and forget it.

Ok, what have most of you replaced your stock air filter box with?? K&N Filtercharger kit, Airaid, or ??? Any drawback with any of these? And if you don't mind, what did you pay and from who? I replaced the filter with a K&N but am now thinking I should get the kit to maximize HP/torque.
  • bluebeastbluebeast Member Posts: 258
Did you end up getting Stainless Steel, Chrome or the Jet Hot coating put on? Also, maybe I'm reading between the lines but it seems that maybe you wished you did not put the JBA's on..is this true? Once you had off the stock manifolds were the design that bad or by your expertease they "sucked"? One last thing, was the gasket pretty good to use or did you go buy a copper gasket or ??.........thanks!
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
I work at a lumber yard we put in pallets of bricks concrete da da da. I have numerously put them in trucks with spray ins never messed one up or have seen one ripped up and these people do abuse them trust me. Actuall the last one was some chick that had a new 2000 2500 with a spray in she got i dont remember how much but they dumped in rocks and then after that she hauled dirt. No dents or tears. Ive heard the bad and the good. I know from first hand that the drop ins do rust the bed if water gets in there. Trust me on this 92 S-10 and it has some small spots already.
I dont like all the colors and glow in the dark u have to get black.
One last thing Tim dont get me wrong i didnt mean to sound like im not gonna use the bed i will for many reasons. But i wont abuse it either.

Oh yea everyone might be going to fort wayne next saturday and might take a ride to the dealership i have decided on buying from and possibly order one if my dad ok's it. (He has to sign the papers)

I got a TPW of 14FEB. How long after will the truck be delivered? Anybody? GM customer service said 6-8 weeks, but I seem to remember someone posted somewhere around 3 weeks. How about you guys that have just received your trucks? I knew 14FEB would eventually become a special day in my life! Ha! Nobody tell my wife, ok............
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
Since I wasn't sure if I'd like the setup after it was all installed, I took the inexpensive route. The JBA headers were chrome and the Gibson catback aluminum. I am using the gaskets from JBA as they looked pretty good. I've had them on for four months. After the initial install, I checked for exhaust leaks and retorqued the header bolts twice. So far the bolts have kept the torque settings that I had initially set and no exhaust leaks. I am satisfied with the current performance increase. I actually wished I had bought the JBA's with ceramic coating. Oh yeah, the stock exhaust manifold isn't all that bad..for a boat anchor.

    Prices are from www.coolwheels.com
    Airaid $239
    JBA $472
    Gibson $279
    Granatelli $349

22 days was about right/average from build date to delivery. The closer you live, the better.

Does GM provide the pigtail to go from their round wire harness connection to a flat four ?

Is anyone with this lid having a problem with it sealing? On mine there is a 1/4 inch gap between the rubber seal in the lid and the
frame, so there is no seal what-so-ever. My distributor at first told me that they all were like that, but would order me a new one.
When it didn't come in after 3 weeks, I called them and they told me it would be another 3 weeks because A.R.E. was re-vamping
the mold and frame for the 99-00 trucks to make them fit correctly. Has anyone else heard of this or are they handing me a line of
    bull?

    Thanks

I think the age I have on you would make me have a better overall perspective of tales with various type liners....but hey..I don't care.

Get what you want man. Lumber won't damage a bed with no liner.

I want a liner I can actually use.
Get a spray in if it makes you happy...(If dad says it's OK?)
    LOL

Don't want to sound stupid, but what are ICC lights? Never heard of them. The only lights that I can think of that came on the C/K trucks were those amber lights on top of the cabs. If that is what you are referring too, I saw them on the new "Heavy Duty" (2500 HD and 3500) trucks at the auto show.

I believe that you can remove the speed limiter with a Hypertech Programmer. Haven't heard of any other way.

Insurance: 6 months $2300?????? I can afford truck but not insuraance payments how sad. I am kinda smart though have it in dads name pay less.

  • rayt2rayt2 Member Posts: 1,208
But if you get in an accident they can sue YOU and your DAD. Doesn't assigned risk suck for young male drivers($2300 for 6 months) yikes? I pay that much a year for 3 vehicles, but then again I've been driving for 30+ years too! Female drivers get much cheaper rates. You should call the ACLU it's discrimination I tell ya!!!LOL

DOnt get me started on insurance rates. It seriously would be $2300 for me every 6 months if its in my name with a perfect driving record too no tickets or accidents (knock on wood) I can rant and rave till im blue on the face. WOMEN ARE WORSE DRIVERS (SORRY Cindy). Ill quit while im ahead

    Ryan,

You must be about 14 years old or something crazy like that. I have a '99 Ext. Cab 2wd, I bought the truck 8 months ago, when I was 21. I have a perfect record, and I only pay $1700 a year. If you are paying cash for the truck, you could get away with not having full coverage, although I would, on a brand new truck...

I have full coverage, but I also have a note...

Ryan said (and will pay for that remoark!):WOMEN ARE WORSE DRIVERS

Hey, I've been a female, driving for over 30 years, and no accidents. Watch it ya young whippersnapper. Statistics don't hold up your facts.

That's a lot for insurance..my son (now 24)pays a lot less with collision - he has never paid that amount..how come so much? $4600 is a lot of insurance for a year, with no accidents or (I assume) tickets..have you looked around? And by the way, if you live at home, and have insurance in your own name, and you're under 21, they can still sue dear ol dad (for years I made my kids get there own, till a lwyer friend told me it makes no diff), so go with whatever is cheapest.
  • clarkmcbrayerclarkmcbrayer Member Posts: 22
Ansy doesn't even come close to how I feel right now. 3 months waiting on my truck has been an eternity. IT WILL BE WORTH THE WAIT. I think my 11 yr old son is more excited than I am, if that is possible. I got mine for 2.25 % over invoice. Saved $3300. If you try to buy a 4th door at the lot, and they only have 1 or 2, be ready for them trying to get sticker price. That is what is happening at my dealer right now. They have one for about 3-4 weeks. Hasn't sold yet. They aren't budging off the sticker price. They must be proud. I hope you warm up. Zero degrees is cold.

I live in the part of the country that is still traveling by covered wagon, or so I've been asked.
I have an '88 Ford XLT 4x4, '92 Cougar LS, and a '98 Tahoe 5th Wheel Trailer, all total insurance costs is $990/year. Full coverage, with a $100 deductible. Can't beat that..Of course I am over the age of legal consent by about 46+ years. But this part of the country is absolutely perfect, where is it you ask (?), I'm not gonna say.

    Have a nice day......

talk about an up and down day. As I posted earlier today, I was informed this morning that it would be may or june for production on my 2500 2wd. So i was pretty down about that, as many of you know that feeling I am sure. Later in the day, I found out that my order had been accepted and generated today. So now I have an order number. I will call tommorow and see if a TPW is available yet. So now I have that excitited feeling again. AS many of you also know, the excitment feeling is MUCH better than the "bad news" feeling.

Also, I just turned 21 one week ago, and my insurance will be a little under $1400 a year for full coverage, with $100 deductible. clean record also.

I guess I didn't think that it might be the area a person lives in too. Some areas are higher on insurance, so you may be in the same bracket.

In either case, just making an observation. I have had excellent luck with American Family. Never had any other insurance in 16 years of driving. Some people don't have good to say about them, some people swear by them. Guess that is a lot like trucks.

Anyway, just thought I would mention it.
