I called gig harbour ford and let them know that I and anybody I know will never buy any vehicle from them. Mine is ordered out of state as well, but at least I have had prior experience with an Excursion where I order my SD. Built 4/10 so should be here soon. Covert Ford, Austin, TX, Wendell Tanner salesman, $200 over invoice

How about a positive dealership story. I took my truck into one of the local Ford Dealerships (Cal Worthington Ford in Anchorage) for the 30,000 mile servicing. They did a recall item and ordered parts related to a brake shimmy at high speeds. I had heard about service bulletin and always had a slight shimmy when slowing down from hwy speeds, but it didn't seem out of the ordinary to me. Anyway, despite having 30,000 miles on the truck, they are going to change out some parts under warranty.

It gets better. I have a Lariat dually. Last summer, I lost a rear hubcap on a rough road. I heard they cost about $50. After having my tires rotated a few weeks ago, I lost a front one. Believe it or not, the dealership replaced both under warranty! I bought my 92 F-250 from them, but was out of state when I bought the current truck. This dealership has always given me good service. For those of you who weren't around a year or so ago, my V-10 threw a rocker arm around 9,300 miles and this dealership replaced the engine without me even pressuring them for replacement vs repair. Not bad considering I bought it elsewhere. Needless to say, it is highly likely my next truck will be purchased from this dealership.

I'm having Firestone Ride-Rite airbags installed next week and hope to put the camper on 4-29. If I can get my hands on a digital camera, I will try to post some pictures if anyone is interested.

I pulled the running boards off of Big Bessie today and put on some Bars - Very easy to put on and it looks much better. Plus the dealer gave me $100 for the boards back so the bars only cost another $100.

I think I'm going to go ahead with the line-x too. I had it on my Ranger and I know it's the toughest of the spray-ins. The ski's on a snowmobile have carbide runners on the bottom and I've seen Rhino give way to them very quickly. Doesn't even mar the Line-x!

Other than that, no aftermarket crap is going on this truck! I love her just the way she are!

She has a doctor's appt tomorrow - Pulls to the right when you brake hard. Other than that, all is well.

    Happy Easter!

Sounds like you have the exact truck I have (even the color) except mine has the 4.30ls. It is long, but you get really good at spotting good parking locations (thanks to the high altitude). I ordered mine last Sep and pick up in Nov. No problems of any kind so far. Love the long bed. You will too.

I know that posts like this are pretty old hat for those who have followed the site for awhile, but...I got my truck today! Ordered first week of March, on the lot first week of April, was out of town until a few days ago, picked it up today. Pretty plain-jane compared to some of the rigs posted here: 250 SC, 5.4/5sp, 4.10LS, 2whl drive, CD, ABS, tow/camperpkg, etc. I am very pleased with everything so far, good dealer experience with little negotiating for fair price (Inv +2%). Sales rep noticed slight chip on edge of windshield during delivery, apparently from assembly, and set up appointment for new windshield on Monday. It was almost invisible and they could have let it pass and fix it once it cracked, but they pointed it out immediately. Pretty good folks, I would recommend them--Garnsey and Wheeler Ford, Greeley, CO. Drove and extra 35 miles to deal with them over the local high-pressure "what will it take to get you into that car tonight" dealership. Off to a weekend of break-in miles! Thanks for reading another of these "I got it--I like it" posts!

Congrats.. If its a SuperDuty its not plain jane.. Maybe I say this because your config is basically the same as mine..
    Have fun..

I promised I would let you know how I made out with the Line-X dealer in Plymouth, MA. I couldn't be happier with the way it looks. Everyone I show it to says it looks like it came sprayed from the factory. The owner, Bob, takes the time to remove the bolts for the bed, the tie-downs, and the access cover plate on the tailgate. The cover plate is sprayed separately to allow you to remove it later. The quality of his spray job is excellent and it's guaranteed for the life of the truck. I just can't say enough good things about this particular Line-X dealer and his workmanship. I know it's a long way for you to travel, but I would give it some consideration for that one, and only one, liner for a brand new SD. I could have also gone with the Rhino liner dealer 10 minutes from my house, but I'm not sorry for a second that I took the time to drive to Plymouth. I'm glad to read that your new truck is just around the corner. I have been so happy with mine. Sorry this post is only really useful for those in the MA/New England area, but I like to help out people who honestly do quality work since they sometimes seem hard to find. Thanks.

I am glad to see that someone out there actually has had great service from Cal Worthington Ford in Anchorage!!! After all the problems and extremely poor service, a run around I went thru with an ordered truck - not quite as bad as psmith13- but close, and my truck getting "lost" for a day in the service garage - I am glad to see that they can actually satisfy customers instead of running them away. I will even consider going back instead of driving 50 miles to a different dealership if I continue to hear this kind of praise for what used to be the worst dealership on the planet.
  • porkyporky Member Posts: 83
I am also surprised to hear GOOD things about old Cal. Cal Worthington was, I believe, actually "kicked out" of Washington State for bait and switch, and poor business practices.
I'm wondering where Ralph Williams (NW Chrysler/Plymouth) will pop up. (same tactics as Cal)

Hubrex2-No one here should ever apologize for getting excited about their new truck finally arriving. After all, that's a big reason why we are all here. And I agree with Bess, there's no such thing as a Plain Jane Super Duty. Congrats!! Have a fun weekend driving. And look for my long post...hopefully in the not too distant future.

Bigblue- I was just wondering about your Line-X experience the other day, and how it turned out. Thanks so much for the post. Now you've got me thinking again. Did you have a custom color done or just black? I'm interested in just black. Do you know if they have a sample piece of the spray-in material that they give out? The Rhino guy here had a little packet with a sample of the liner and the brochure. You may have done this once before, but can you give me the Plymouth Line-X guy's phone number? Thanks. Glad to hear you love your truck, too!

As I mentioned, I've never dealt with the sales people at Cals. When you pull up, they flock to you like vultures. When I bought my 92 F-250 from them, I negotiated the deal over the phone with the fleet department on New Years Eve 1991. My positive experience has been service and the fleet department. When I'm ready to buy another truck, they'll get first crack, but I plan to do it on the phone again since I will know exactly what I want when I'm ready to buy.

By the way, I found out that they are actually replacing the rear brake rotors under warranty related to that service bulletin. I can't believe I'm getting new rear rotors at 30k under warranty. With the 4,000 pound cabover camper, I expected to go through brakes quicker, so this is a real bonus.

So far, after a year and a half and 30,000 miles, I've only had to pay for routine service per the owner's manual. As far as my truck is concerned, Ford has stood behind their warranty on the couple of issues that were not routine service and they have done it without any coersion on my part. No complaints at all to this point, although it would be nice if it go 50 mpg.....

I have a 2000, V10, 250 s/d with 16,000 miles on it. Have pulled my fifth wheel about 3000 with it and it is excellent. Lately the truck starts, and before the rpm can build up it stops. This happens from every day or may skip a week. The local Ford dealer cannot find the problem, computer check shows negative. Any ideas to a solution is aprreciated. Fords data bank shows nothing.

Yoohooo!!!!! Dealer called yesterday to let me know my rig has been scheduled for build on May 8. Ordered 1/4/00 and I was beginning to get impatient. Now I've got to get serious about rounding up accessories for my "beast to be". I have a rather long list of items. On two of these items, I need some advice from a few of the pros out there. The first item is a soft tonneau cover. I'm considering a Penda but open to any suggestions. The second item is diamond plate bed rail protectors. Leaning toward Dee Zee but again open to any suggestions. Also, the Ford Accessories Catalog shows their bed rail protectors installed over the factory rail protectors. I prefer to remove the factory items and install the diamond plate items directly onto the bed rails. Has anyone out there had any experience in this area? One last question, any recommendations on a good internet accessories provider? Thanks for your time.
  • gossamargossamar Member Posts: 106
...As far as tonneau cover, I would go with an X-tang. Have had mine since last fall and LOVE it. There are two versions to the X-tang, one has snaps, the other has the ridge seal(?). Unless you live where the temperature stays pretty constant year round, go with the snaps. The snaps have two settings, one for winter, one for summer. This allows for expansion/shrinkage of the material. This helps when it is time to put the cover back on, you don't have to fight it as much as with the other system.
A friend of mine has the other attatchment system and if he takes it off in the winter time, he has to let it sit in a heated garage for a few hours in order to re-cover the bed. I think that the X-tang has a 3-year warranty also. I went to a truck topper sales place and got mine. Think I paid under $300.00 installed.

I'll echo what bigblue says about the quality of line-x. It's been a little over a month now since I had mine done, and after using and abusing it for a month, I am even more pleased with the job. For anyone in the Seattle area, I had mine done at Puget Sound line-x in Kirkland.

Had a Super-Duty day today. Swapped out the factory oil for some nice, clean Shell Rotella-T. Man it's easy to change the oil on this baby.

I also installed an electric brake controller for the camper and horse trailer we will be pulling around this summer. I had to spend a few minutes studying the documentation that Ford put in the glove box (with the harness, relays and fuses). Once I got Ford's terminology down, and matched it up with the terminology for the brake controller (so I knew which wire to solder together), the installation was a snap.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll check it out.

I saw a truck (maybe a 95 or 96 F250) the other day with the metal bed rail protectors.. It looked like the metal protectors rubbed/scratched the paint off under the rail and it was rusting there..
Maybe keeping the plastic ones there isn't such a bad idea?

You didn't say whether or not after it dies out it will restart and stay running. it sounds like you can have several potential things causing your problem which any good tech should have informed you of. first, you could just simply have gotten a bad batch of gas. try another brand of gas after using all the fuel currently in tank. Also when you take truck in for service i know its hard to remember everything that happens when it does this but try to pay close attention to such details as how long does the truck sit before starting when this happens. if needed keep a little notebook to jot down when it happens and how frequently, temp outside, rain or shine, how long truck sits for, a couple of hours or overnight. what brand of gas you use, does it happen right after fill up or doesn't matter. Again, i know this sounds like a lot to have to do with a new truck but the more detail you are able to provide to the service tech the faster he or she will be able to correct the problem. also ask the dealer if they are equipped with the sbds machine with flight recorder. if they are ask them if they intend to use it on your truck. the flight recorder acts like a little black box in an airplane. the tech can store up to two occurrences during the session. even the slightest errors can show up during this test. also ask when you pick up your truck to see the sbds and flight recorder printouts. the dealer has to have them attached to the repair order in order to be paid for their time by ford motor company.

You know I've said it before; the service department makes the sales. At least they do for me. No matter how great the sales department is, once the deal is done you're stuck with the service dept. I always recommend doing a little business with Service before you walk into Sales.

psmith: you down in Anchorage or up here around Fairbanks?

For what it's worth, I got treated like a king at Billingsley Ford in Lawton OK...talk to Carl.

Got about 6700 miles on my rig...'00 SD SC XLT V-10, 4X4, deep wedge over silver. 4000 of it ALCAN.

Thanks for the feedback. Rust caused by relative motion between the bed rails and rail protector was what I was trying to avoid by going with the metal rail protectors. Sounds like I need to do more research before jumping the gun. What would work best (IMHO) are rail protectors with a 1/4 inch or so thick rubber cushion that gets wedged between the rail and protector. I wonder if there's such a beast.

On a side note, understand you live in the Raleigh area and work for Big Blue in RTP. I graduated from NCSU with a BSME and know the area pretty well. I simply love the area and hated to leave after graduating. But, I preferred a good income over starving and had to move to NE Florida. Haven't been able to get back, aside from occasional visits. Maybe some day.

Time for the first report on the new truck (250SC SB 5.4/5sp 4.10ls). Only 300 miles so far, but I have several areas I like. Yes, the view. It takes some effort to get up there, but the view from the driver's seat is impressive. I had been driving an AWD Aerostar, which has a fairly high driving position, but this... The power and low end torque are great, especially when considering this is "just" a V-8. Overall feel of the truck is one of a very sound, well-designed and put together truck. Some concerns, relatively minor--a couple of squeak/rattles that I will isolate and either fix or have fixed. The right side mirror: I didn't order the tow mirrors, and the standard power mirrors are fine, except the right side is not the wide angle/convex type, as it should be on a vehicle this size. Vision is limited, I will install an accessory wide mirror if a wide one (as found on the F-150/Expedition) is not available. Highway ride: pretty jumpy on interstate pavement, I think some adjustment of air pressure may help. All four tires were inflated to max (55psi), perhaps going to 50-52 will help. Last, shifter is notchy and stiff, should loosen with more miles. that's it--VERY happy and look forward to many enjoyable miles! Any feedback on any of these observations would be welcome.

Had that same startup and die problem one time on my 86 F-150. Turned out to be a bad O2 sensor. It gave the computer wrong info and it would do that startup and die then startup and stay running routine every morning until I replaced that sensor.

I went with the 6" lift to accomodate the 38" X 15.50 TSL's. Even with that lift I had to get a custom body shop to modify the back of the front fenders for turning clearance in off level ground situations. The TSL's are a bit noisy, as to be expected. With the 35"s you can do the 4" and it would look great. The 6" Skyjacker lift recommends 36" tires. I think my clearance problems would have been okay if I would have used 38" X 12.50's.

As far as gas mileage. I dropped from 13 to 14 down to 10 to 11 with the larger tires. Not bad for a beast like that. Sure gets a lot of looks and respect way up in the clouds!!!

On the lift. If you go with the 6" inch I would recommend rears springs and not blocks. This allows you to retain all of your towing capabilities and prevents the possibility of the blocks kicking out due to axle wrap under heavy loads.

I purchased all of my parts from 4-WHEEL PARTS WHOLESALERS.

I'll post a photo as soon as I get back to my computer at home in a week or so.

This is my first post to this site. I've enjoyed reading the messages from all you owners and hopeful to be owners over the past couple of months.

On Feb. 11, 00' I ordered a silver 2000 F250 XLT SD Crew Cab SB, 5.4L, AT, 4x2, Tow Pkg, Power Tow Mirrors, Sliding Rear Window, CD, Power seat, and Dark Denim Blue interior. My build date was April 10, 00' with an ETA at the dealer of May 1. My dealer phoned yesterday to say that the truck was off the rail car 60 miles away and could be delivered any time. I'm trying not to get too excited until I'm told it's at the dealership, but it's hard.

We will use the truck mostly for family recreation and towing our 2000 lb. Coleman trailer camping. This truck will replace a 87' F150 Regular Cab LB w/5.0L V8. It has been a good truck but we wanted the crew cab.

I too would be interested in a good delivery checklist to guard against missing something amidst all the excitement of the trucks arrival.

    Thanks

Talked to my dealer last week about my order 00 SD, Crew Cab, SB, Black, Lariat, V-10, 3.73LS, CD, Trailer Pkg, Camper Package, Trailer Tow Mirrors, said their rep. from Ford was coming in, and was going to see if the order can be bumped. Called him yestered and the order will be pulled within the next week, garenteed me delivery by the end of next month. Ordered 11/28/99, been counting the days sense he told me. Need input on spray in liners Line-X, Rhino???

Any of you folks from "America" had any experience with Ameraguard spray in liners? There's a new to Alaska franchise here in Anchorage with a $299 cost (Rhino and Line-X are $400+) Ameriguard looks similar, life-time warranty, etc.. Any thoughts?
  • sherwoodforsherwoodfor Member Posts: 52
suprised to hear that your mileage dropped so dramatically with your monster tires and lift. did you account for the change in your odometer reading with the increased diameter/circumference of your new set up? if not, your mileage is roughly 20% better than your odometer is letting on.
  • bessbess Member Posts: 972
hubrex, you have about the same truck as I do..
All of your 'likes' are mine as well.. Aint it cool!.
About the little things you mentioned:
Rattles: Be sure you close the SC rear doors well. At first I almost had to slam them to close tight, otherwise either the top or bottom latch may not engauge. Resulting in a pretty good rattle. This has gotten better over time, and it doesn't feel like I have to slam them now to close..

Only other rattle I have is the center console (40/20/40), if theres stuff inside, and if I don't rest my arm on it.. Normally I have an elbow on it anyway.

Stiff shifting: Yep, several things happen over time. The tranny does loosen up some making shifting easier and you get better at shifting, (learning the best rpm range etc).
Also, you've probably heard it mentioned before that its completly ok to start out in 2nd gear, avoiding the 1st granny gear.

Mirror: I don't think theres a factory convex replacement mirror. I'm using a rectangular spot mirror on the passenger side and it works great..

    Welcome to the 'haves' club!..
  • hubrex2hubrex2 Member Posts: 24
Bess--Yes, we have similar trucks and seem to appreciate similar qualities in them. I will follow up on the SC rear doors, the rattles I heard seemed to be coming from that area. I have been following your posts for some time, and your comments helped me decide just what to buy. I appreciate the feedback. I'm adding cab steps and a bedliner this week; I'll be keeping tabs on the mileage as time goes by.
Handgunhunter--I have heard of Ameraguard liners. I think it is a case of what has been posted here earlier--the quality of the liner is dependent on the attention and skill of the applicator. I looked at the highly regarded Rhino liner today, and its appearance in this case left much to be desired. Have also seen Ameraguard applied by a perfectionist and it looked great. I have an appointment this week to have him do his magic on my truck. The quality of the material appears to be on par with Line-X, Rhino, and others. As has been posted many times--see work samples before you let them touch your truck, cuz' there's no going back once it's done.

i ordered a SD CrewCab 4x4 with V10 and 3.73LS from caroder.com. They just came back and said that 3.73LS is no longer in production, that I can get it with a 4.3LS, a 3.73 open or a diesel with 3.73LS. anyone have any suggestions, I absolutely don't want to live with the 4.3 gearing. I could go with the open diff but then I will have the extra expense for a new RR. Anyone know where I can find what I am looking for or any ideas??
  • bessbess Member Posts: 972
I know that in the F250
    V10 + 5sp + 3.73LS is NOT available, never was.

V10 + auto + 3.73LS I think is availble everywhere. But I've heard a rumor that it may now only be available in California..

If you think you have to have the V10, then get the 4.30 and put bigger tires on it. Or get the 3.73 open diff and spend the $$ to put an aftermarket locker in the rear, but I hear that expensive.
  • dwucherdwucher Member Posts: 79
bess is right. v10 5sp 4.30ls. v10 auto 3.73ls. If you are towing and want the 5sp, go with the 4.30ls. If getting the auto, then you have no problem. I have the 5sp 4.30ls. It is low, and second is the starting gear, but it is a big truck, and I have had no problems getting started. When you get used to the shifting, and step on that v10, you will get where you want to go. I read that the redline on the v10 is 5800. I could not imagine every seeing that on my beast, but it's nice to know I can.

Bess, still kinda clunking. Getting pretty good at the shifting, but every now and then clunk!.. Always happens between 2nd and 3rd. 1st to 2nd also, but never use it. Had the rail dust taken care of. Did a good job with the TSB. Still had to polish out the hood though. Has not come back, so I guess they did alright. The body guy told me that every truck on the train that my baby was on for sure had the same problem. He said that most people do not notice, or care. Go figure! Starting to feel like an old timer on here. A lot of new faces.
  • truckfreaktruckfreak Member Posts: 3
4.30LS was with automatic, they are telling me the 3.73LS is not available with any trans in calif.

I'm resigned to getting the 4.3LS unless someone knows where a 3.73LS may reside on a dealers lot.

all above is with the v10

Just can bring myself to spend the extra cash and deal with the noise of the diesel

Picked up rig on Sat. What a beauty. V-10 is awesome! Really big truck. For those of you with the supercab, rear doors can be a little tricky for the kids. They need to close one at a time, not togeather, as my kids thought. Have not checked MPG, don`t really care at this point.I am just Happy, Happy! 350 SD,SC,4wd,XLT,LB,3:73ltdsli

Been away for awhile enjoying my new F-250, 5.4 liter 4wd, supercab, full size bed. Been averaging 11.6 mpg in town and looking to try some tricks to improve that a little. Gossomar... I seem to remember that you dropped a performance chip in your vehicle when you first got yours, along with a KN filter and new exhaust. Forgot if you had the V8 or the V10. Where did you get your chip? I know of a couple people that have installed chips in their diesels and have been raving about the improved performance, although they claim the improvement isn't as great on the gas engines. I'm going to give it a try though. What I am going to do is to make changes one step at a time so I can see which has the most impact.

Also, just received a blanket from Ford thanking me for my business. Received the gym bag earlier from them as an apology for the long delivery (6 months). Hope they keep the mail coming!

Your advice rings true for most things!! I've stopped by the past few days checking out truck beds that they'd just sprayed. No sign of any overspray, missed/thin spots, etc... So I signed up for next week. Can't beat the $299 price and lifetime warranty! Thanks for the info.

Anyone with the Trailer Tow Pkg know what kind of amps the electric brake receptable can dish out?? I'm hoping to plug in my Powerwinch cable for my boat trailer there....thanks

Just got the call today about my SD and it is in. Will have to wait a couple of weeks before I can get to Austin to pick it up.
We also have an Excursion initially ordered with the tow mirrors. Wife did not like them because she couldn't see out the right sided mirror because it was flat and she is use to a convexed mirror from the Suburban. So I order her the non-tow mirrors and the right side is convexed. So if you are looking for a factor convexed mirror, order one for the Excursion. The Excursion mirror also has a heater but I don't think there is a plug for it in the SD. Also the plug for the mirror goes way down deep into the door panel. In my case, rather than fooling around with getting the door panel off, I just cut the wire up close to the mirror and spliced in a new plug. One other thing, the wire colors on the tow mirrors didn't match the wire colors on the non-tow mirror so when I initially put the wires together, the mirrors were going in some diagonal direction. Eventually got that straighten out. My advantage is that I put the same new plug in for the tow mirrors so I can just unbolt my non-tow mirror and put the tow mirrors on (either the Excursion or the SD). Anyways, I plan to change the right sided mirror on the SD to the Excursion convexed mirror. The cost is $125 list each and I got they for $106.25 + S&H from Schwartz Ford. The part No. is FMC YC3Z17683AAA or FMC YC3Z17682AAA (one is the left and the other is the right).

If you want the 3.73 with LS just order the truck with open diff, and have any off road shop install a aftermarket LS. That way you can have the truck just as you want it.

Still here. Still waiting. I did have a message on my machine today from the dealership....but it was only the parts department telling me my mud flaps were in. All the extras are here. Just no truck yet. Seen quite a few V-10 auto's being released with all the posts here so it is just a matter of time. I am waiting until the end of next week (3 weeks after given delivery date) to start rattling their cages. I know I am being way too casual about all of this and I should be looking for it on the rail websites, but I don't want to know that it has ended up in Wichita or somewhere on the opposite side of the country a la Lewac. Where is he anyway? Thanks for the thoughts and I'll let you know when I get the call.
