I read this on the Malms Website, I tried it and it works for me. I live in Santa Clara, CA and we have the hardest water I have ever seen. For 2 years I refused to wash my black motorcycle there because of the water.

    1. Hose the truck down. Wait 3 minutes and repeat. Do the frame and underbody also.
    2. Remove the spray nozzle and set the water to a low flow.
    3. Start at the top and do one section at a time. Run the water over the section, wash thoroughly, rinse completely and dry.
    4. Do the next section.

By not using the spray nozzle you can do one section without getting a clean section wet. Also not using the spray nozzle, but a continuous stream of water will let the water rinse off in a sheet and leave very little water on the truck. Dry immediatly to prevent water spots. You can really see the dirt on the dry side versus the side you just cleaned.

z71 - i like it. gonna be awhile, but i'm prob'ly going to replace the shocks with the edelbrocks as well. gotta finance my bedliner first. i like the ride right now...would just like a "tighter" or "firmer" feel which people getting the edelbrocks claim to have. all told...not bad...just think it could be a little better. is replacing the shocks a "do-it-yourself" project? any special tools required? never messed with that...

synth oil - asked this question earlier. if you accept 10,000 as a "safe" interval to leave synthetic oil in. will an AC Delco PF 59 filter last that long as well? or...if you have to change the filter, how do you do so without dumping half the oil anyways. any thoughts?

    thanks...

First time been here since a few days ago.

I have decided..(Yes me)..that being on here at work (like now) only stops the progress of my biz and I need to spend less time here...there is no such thing as a "quick" look into edmunds...you get caught up and next thing you know you are wasting time.....I can only imagine what Ryan is getting done at work??..LOL

As for night....I have been busy putting the final touches on my new lawn that deserves my attention..as it will be the best one on the block..ehheehehee

also had a few B-day partys after work...and have only had time to get E-mail.

While this is great and yawl are great....I need to spend more time doing other things while the weather is working for me....ya know?

and for the record...I did not come up with "cryin' Ryan".....it did come from the Toy section....but not from me....

    ...I kinda like it though??

    LOL

    Enjoy

Way to have priorities and know what is more important in your life. I am getting alot done at work actually. I am working on a bunch of database and entering different stuff for equipment on a database so im on the computer 90% of my day right now.

Kyle you should be able to change the shocks yourself. Me and my dad changed shocks on his old 87 blazer last fall. It takes some time but im sure you could do it. I dont remember offhand if it took any speical tools but i dont think it did.

gotta lazier way of doing it. i've had two black vehicles now. and it's worked so far...

    1. rinse entire vehicle using spray nozzle on "light setting" directing "hard spray" only at tough spots (bird sh*t, bugs, etc). fyi - i don't hold real hard spray right on it...just from a distance to loosen the grime up.

    2. thoroughly wash the vehicle. starting with the roof, then the hood, then working from top to bottom, front to rear, in manageable sections. rinsing after each section.

    3. after i've finished washing and rinsing each section, i clean the step bars, mudflaps, wheels and tires as necessary.

    4. here's the similarity to what you're saying mike: rinse the entire vehicle very thoroughly. in essence you're "loosening" any water spots that may have formed on the previously washed and rinsed sections (esp. roof and hood).

    5. chamois the entire vehicle in the same order you washed it. roof, hood, top to bottom, front to back.

i should mention i do all of this in the shade as much as possible. if you can't wash in the shade, move it into the shade after the final rinse before you start to dry. this gives you a little more time before the sun dries the water up creating the spots. also, if you use a chamois, the fact that it retains a little bit of water even after you wring it out will help remove any water spots that DO form if you're too slow. i've had great experience with it. my 0.04...

Are you guys having problems with water spotting and other paint blems? I waxed my truck with Mequiars liquid carnuba a week after i got it. I've had the truck less than 3 months and the paint looks 3 years old! It stays outside but gets washed at least once a week. This clearcoat is the softest I've ever seen. If you look at it and it scratches. I tried a coat of paste carnuba on it. Ryan would say that its because I got Carmine and old people can't see the spots, but I don't think so! Are you having better luck and what are you using on it? Thanks.
  • werkingwerking Member Posts: 431
    sorry tim...he asked...

gotribe - mine's black (notorious for being soft). no prob's with blemishes. i used zaino within the first month i had it (feb) and twice since. trying to get all the swirl marks out. pretty close right now. just got my bottle of clearcoat polish from zaino. prob'ly do one more coat of swirl/scratch remover, and then start in with the clearcoat polish. for the most part, i've been pleased with zaino. if tim comes back...he'll recommend malms (www.malms.com) i've never tried it.

gotribe - only place you can get zaino products is via the internet. www.zainobros.com
can't order on line, but you can figure out what you want, and then fill out/mail in an order form and a check. they'll have it back to you w/in a week-10 days. if you want more info about my experiences with it, feel free to email me at kwerking@aol.com

hello people... i was wondering if you could tell me how diffcult it is to install an exhaust system (probably a gibson system) and how you people installed it... (ie..what do you need to aid in installation). And tips or tricks i should try out??? Also, how hard is it to install an intake system, such as a volant sys (similar to a K&N generation II sys). I sort of need to know, asap if possible before i order some stuff. my dad is somewhat reluctant that im doing this sort of stuff, though ive already told him specifically what to do, i guess its because i've never really modified a vehicle before, so i am a beginner. Theres a first for everything. Also, have you people had any problems with passing emissions with an intake and exhaust system modification... thanks for youre help....
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
What zaino product(s) did you use? I ordered the clearcoat stuff (2 bottles). Will that be enough i dont need it super shiny just get the little scratches and marks out. Thanks man

  • gotribe1gotribe1 Member Posts: 81
Thanks for the info. Is the Zaino going to prevent future spotting? I almost hate to wash and dry the truck to see even more stuff on it! I've got a 31 year old car with the original paint on it that doesn't show as many surface blems as the Silverado. And it slept outside for its first 3 years too!

If I remember correctly you got the Husky liners mud flaps. Did you have to do any drilling to put them on? I wonder if anyone has painted them to match their truck. I know your flares are black and you probably didn't paint yours, but was the surface smooth enough to paint? Did you get their floor liners too?

    ryan,
first three coats have been swirl/scratch remover - z5 i think(?). i've used the z1 polish lok on each of those. after one more coat of swirl/scratch remover, i'm going to change to the clearcoat stuff. when i get home, i'll check the actual product names/numbers and let you know...can't remember right now...

    steve,
reference the spotting. see my earlier post about how i eliminate water spots. the zaino (just like any decent wax) does help because water sheets off of it really nicely. especially that first rain after you wash it (ryan!!!). you almost won't be able to tell it rained, cuz the water just runs right off. real slick...

I had to drill 1 hole into each fender wall. The mudflaps use 3 holes 2 of which use preexisting holes. Its only a 1/8 in. It was really easy. Only bad part is you have to take off the rear wheels to install the rear flaps.

The mudflap surface is rough id say semi rough. It might be possible to paint them. You know what have u been to the website? Get the phone # and give em a call they will be very helpful the lady i talked to was very nice. They will know for sure.

No i didnt get the floor liners but i have heard many good things about them. I just use some $1.99 towels from target which work just fine. Maybe in the winter ill get the husky but for now the towels are good.

Ill have some pics asap (2 wks) of the mudflaps and my bedrail caps for you to see

You ever see the movie rainman? Well my last name is the same as Charlies (Tom Cruise) in that movie. Ive been asked countless times if im related to him and i say yea and people acutally believe me.

    Kyle

No need for the numbers from zaino i have them. Im just wondering if it is alright to just use the clearcoat stuff (Z2??) by itself?

    Thanks

Please, one of you old Carmine drivers please explain to Ryan who Lassie is. I think Tim just got tired of sitting ryanbab for free. Red, did you just adopt him?

Why is this the RIP on Ryan room? I know who lassie is. Tim has better things to do (priorities). I think his wife is got jealous he was spending to much time with us and she said choose between me and edmunds and he chose her. Oh well. Im sure itll be the same way with me soon

On a serious note some of you guys have been a great help. Tim, Kyle, and Ryan have given a lot of GREAT information and humor to the topic. You guys have made my Silverado experience better than I could have done on my own. Thanks for the expert help!

Hey guys read throught those instructions one more time. I've heard of some disappointed Zaino users, but it turns out most of the time they aren't using it as recommended. I love the stuff on my black truck and I've been using it since day one. I finally have a garage so the truck doesn't sit out, but it has been rained on plenty in Dallas and only gets washed about every other weekend.

At a minimum start by washing the truck with Dawn, clay if you choose too, then one coat of Z1 then either Z5 or Z2 (Z5 for the swirls) then follow up with a coat of Z6. Wait at least 24 hours between each application of Z5/Z2 and Z6.

Kyle - Z1 is only recommended once every 6 months or 10 coats of Z2/Z5.

Ryan Z1 is recommended/required before any other products. The Z6 really does help add that final shine and helps somewhat to keep the dust and pollen from sticking to the truck.

I wouldn't consider using Zaino without at least the 3 base products Z1, Z5 or Z2, and Z6.

Ryan (post 651)- consider what you said - you don't need it super shiny? sure you do - you know the truck is a chick magnet - they'll notice the shine every time !

  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240

Chick magnet hmm well yes they can look but they cant have i kinda just got involved with someone.

Greg is right. After applying Z1, consider two or more coats of Z2. With each coat the paint gets deeper and wetter looking. I have applied the Z2 and left it on over night without any problems removing the stuff. And after you have applied it, the next time you wash it, it will seem like you are washing a glass surface. Incredible. One thing that I do is add a few drops of Z2 to my wash bucket that is full of soapy water. This seems to help preserve and deepen the shine.

For the interior I use Protectant 303. This stuff does not corrode the vinyl like Armorall or cause a film to appear on the inside of your windshield.

IF, and this is the key here, IF YOU WANT TO RETAIN THE STOCK EXHAUST WITHOUT CUTTING IT, then remove the spare tire and jack the rear end up about 8 inches and you will be able to remove the cat back stock system in one piece. MUST be by removing rearward, NOT towards the front.

On the oil filter question, a Mobil1 oil filter would be my first choice, but the AC-delco seems to be ok for a 10K miles oil change....... check here to see what I mean:

Maybe it is drier or windier here in California, but I've never been able to dry the whole truck without waterspots drying on the truck before I get to the end.

Doing one panel at a time has really helped me out.

And not using the spray nozzle greatly improved the water sheeting and runoff.

    I'm a new member and a new owner of a 2000
Silverado LS with the 5.3 engine.

Any information about this truck and the 5.3
    engine would be appreciated.

I have heard an engine noise, a click or
lifter noise. Should I take her in for
service? Should I be concerned? I have
9,133 miles on her. I'm using 5W30 Castrol
GT oil and AC filters. I change the oil my-
self. Oh, I am female and very careful with
    my automobiles.

Thanks for any help you can offer.
  • markbuckmarkbuck Member Posts: 1,021
Save the money you'd waste on exhausts and intakes, pay down the loan if you have one on the truck.
Very little gains (except noise) to be made in either of these areas.

If you really wanna spend the money, go spend it on something fun! Dirtbikes, girls,.....
  • bob332bob332 Member Posts: 137
Do not spray kerosene or any other solvent into the engine or the oil pan. It will be almost Impossible to get all of it out and even an ounce or a few ml left in will dilute and/or contaminate the new oil. Bob
  • werkingwerking Member Posts: 431
thanks for the advice. 'ppreciate it. i don't have the instrux in front of me right now...thought you could apply the z1 every time if you wanted to. anyways, it's funny you said that...cuz it's almost where i want it to be and i wasn't planning on using the lok this time. next time i get a chance (hopefully the 4th) i'm going to use the swirl/scratch remover and then, soon after, the clear coat polish. i'll let you guys know the results when i'm done...

gotribe - appreciate the kind words. i too learned more than i can ever give credit for right here. made my buying and accessorizing processes much easier.

I agree too kyle. These forums for the most part are very helpful and informative. Most of the time alot of BS goes on but when someone needs an informative answer they almost always get one and not just one opinion or answer but several. This is good because it confirms and gives many options to the person.

It has made my planning, buying, accessorizing, and maintaining of my truck so much easier and has made it alot of fun too.

blue thanks for the oil site. good site. fram, quakerstate, and one other were complete junk.

incidentally red - if you're still around - had not too bad things to say about the M1 filter. only risk was pressure spikes. other than that...better filtration. no numbers on change intervals unfortunately. think i'll stick with the AC Delco - had good things to say about that.

...Ok ace...you wanna be put on my boxing partner list too?.
    LOL

I made this decision by myself..not some "me or the computer" deal.
The wife does not work with me, so why would she care what I do at work ace?

I will say that I'm sure every married man that has a passion for the net has heard is precious computer referred to as.."That damn computer".

I will be around later in the days and nights..but day time posting will slow for a while. Winter may bring more net activity...but this weather is opportunity for getting other things done...as last time I checked...they don't get done when I sit on the net..

So take all the theories...and well.....you know what to do with them...

We all need lives man!.....and I am making the first move to live it fuller

...(No..I'm not "finding myself and the "book"...like Dan)......yikes!

    Enjoy

    Kyle,

I will post some pics of the H/O when I get it out this weekend.

On my '89 I had a simple system that is no longer legal and I did a lot of research for the Y2K truck and did not find a cheap solution. The complete aux. tank setup cost about $1200. The tank was $429 from Northern Tool plus shipping. It is 41 gal. plus the tool box above. I ordered the installation kit from Auxilary Tank in Dallas and it was $700. It had everything for the installation (2nd pump, float, wiring, 6-port valve, fuel lines, vent lines and fittings) and very good instructions.

The cover is from Fold-A-Cover and I had one on my previous truck and it worked fine with the 5th wheel. It provides good rain protection when closed.

I removed the tool box lid because it opened opposite direction of the Fold-A-Cover and there was no need for 2 lids. (the tool box dimensions match the 6.5ft bed and Fold-A-Cover panel size very well. Check out Fold-A-Cover at www.fold-a-cover.com and Northern Tool at www.northerntool.com. I can get details on Auxilary Tank if you need it. email me at dayle1@epochworks.com

KSIMS: Your supposed to be asking those questions before you bought your rig! Just messin' with you. You got a nice truck, but with 9000 miles you know that already. Scroll back a few posts and you will see a lot of discussions here regarding your "tick".

TIRE BLACK: There are lots of tire dressings on the market now, but the best by far (in my opinion) is Westley's "BLACK MAGIC" We used them exclusively in the car shows and most detail shops will use it as well. Thick silicone product that makes your tires look better than new.

MIKE: You are absolutely right on with your suggestion regarding NOT using a spray nozzle when washing your truck. Let the water flow softly over the section your are washing and it will never bead up even after a wax job. Towel each section down after you have washed and rinsed it.

Your truck will ALWAYS run better if you keep it clean and waxed!! True story.

to wash is to take a hose and a cloth..no soap...and constantly have the hose flowing where you are wiping...just straight water. It helps to cut the end off the hose so you don't knock the car with the metal fitting. The constant flow of water will wash the dirt away and keep it from going under the towel and making a sandpaper effect.

Side effects.....after the hose is flowing for a while..the water is Ice cold!...and your hands get numb...as well as you will probably will get wet if you are not very tall.
To dry an air hose works very well.....no towel marks..lint..streaks...even gets the water out of the mirrors and window frames...which we all know it will leak out when you drive it..

While I like the end product...I really hate washing cars any more....I do it..but it sucks when you want to do it right...

    Good Luck

I haven't forgot your questions from a day or two ago. The truck has little to no noise inside for the most part. Seems to be a little more when it is cold, but after it warms up with the windows up I notice almost no interior sound, there is a little but I've gotten used to it. Plus I always have the radio on and use the SCV, I never hear it at all with the windows up.

Truth be known though, my windows are down about 80% of the time. Only go up for those scorcher days.

Anyone ever have horn problems? Mine is sounding real sick. There has been a lot of rain lately and I suspect the horn got wet. A friend said his did the same thing after some big rains and driving on lots of wet roads. His cleared up though, mine is still sounding the same, pretty sickly, after two weeks.

Anyone else notice the problem? I'm sure they will replace under warranty if I take it in, just haven't done it. But then again I may look for an air horn!
