    Yes to be exact, a 1963 Pontiac Tempest LeMans/326

    The red badge in the grille is the tell for the 326 CID V8.

    I believe all '61-63 Tempests, whether four or V8, are 'rope drive'.

    Did those "ropes" give any trouble? I don't remember........BTW, in case someone doesn't know, the 'rope" was a flexible shaft which went from the engine in the front to the transmission in the rear, the idea being to get better weight distribution.

    A longtime friend in the Studebaker Drivers' Club, who's written the mechanical advice column in the national monthly magazine for decades, says that rope-drive Tempests cause all sorts of headaches. When I told him I'd like a maroon '62 LeMans coupe with the 215 V8, he labelled me a masochist! :)

    Oh you're right---they redesigned the transaxle to handle the 326. Then in '64, the Tempest became a conventional car again.

    The '61 Tempest was voted Motor Trend's "Car of the Year". :surprise:

    It's the new Fiat 500X Crossover, it's really based more on the Punto than the little 500.

    They even built the Tempest Super Duty in '63 with a weird transaxle called the powershift. There's a powershift post about a third of the way down this page that describes how it worked and even has a pic. Since Pontiac was all finished with this rope drive/ transaxle fun by '64, I wonder if any of it could have been adapted for the Chevy Corvair? By '69 this could been at least one more book deal for Ralph!

    Pretty interesting stuff---I wouldn't mind having a 4 cylinder/4speed convertible version.

    All the Corvair really needed was the genius touch of John Fitch---the Fitch Corvair used some very simple improvements to make a real car out of it.

    Yup it's a Borgward Hansa 2400, of which about 1000 were made from 1950-59 according to Wikipedia.

    I recognized that as a Cruze wagon right away! Diesel !? if it comes with an M6 shifter too there is little doubt I'll have to trade/arrange to get one, maybe by trading my 2011 Cruze LS, if not my barely modded 2005 GTO (probably would return it to stock before trading it).

    On the other hand, I don't actually believe Chevrolet will bring it to the USA showroom. (I'd only believe it if Volkswagen-Audi-Group put out a press release confirming it - all other vendors are evidently lying liars when it comes to diesel vehicle pre-announcements.)

    My bad Elias, I read the article wrong but if I'm reading it right we will NOT get the wagon but USA Cruze sedans will get at least one diesel. link

    If ya really wanna get anal about it, that first-year "326" was actually a 336 CID! I think there was some kind of ruling in effect at GM that none of those compacts could have an engine with a displacement of greater than 327 CID, which was the base Corvette engine. So, Pontiac simply lied about the size of their compact car V-8. How they got away with that, though, I dunno.

    For '64, I think the ruling was no midsized cars with more than a 330 CID, but somehow the GTO got away with a 389.

    Useless trivia...Pontiac also lied about the size of their 350/5.7 V-8, as well. If you do the math, the true displacement is actually around 353 CID. If you round off, that's actually a 5.8. (a 350 is around a 5.74 liter, while a 351 is around 5.75, which is why Chevy had a 350 and Ford a 351) But, I guess it was bad marketing for a Pontiac to have a 5.8, while an Olds or Buick "only" had a 5.7, so they made them call it a 350.

    I read somewhere that if you did the math on a Ford 427, it really worked out to 426, a 428 ended up as a 427 and a 429 really displaced 428 ci.

    Well, this has been up so long without a reply that I might as well. Caddyshack was filmed at the Rolling Hills golf club in Davie (entry pictured above where the 'throwing up' Porsche scene was filmed). It used to be a public course with a hotel attached. We here in S FL always enjoyed going over to the clubhouse and pool and reminiscing about the old Caddyshack days.

    Things have changed. The golf course is now private and only members may come in and reminisce about the old Caddyshack days. Oh well...

    G'day

    This is really nagging at me. I am not sure what it it but the badge is sort of familiar. The scene looks prosperous West German. The car is rear drive with McPherson Strut suspension, I would guess early 1970's as semi rectangular lights look badly integrated.

    Any better ideas?

    That's correct, it's a VW K70, it was sorta sneaky for me to come up with a photo in which the VW emblem doesn't show clearly. :P

    The K70 was developed by NSU prior to being taken over by VAG. It was front wheel drive w a longwise four, none ever came to the US. You can see the resemblance to the Ro80 in this photo>

    I've also heard that the 302 was really a 301 CID. Although I just did the math, and I get 301.5936 cubic inches, which could legitimately round to a 302.

    I know the Ford 302 and Pontiac 301 use the same 4.00 bore and 3.00 stroke. Wikipedia mentions that the Pontiac 301 is really a 301.6...so maybe Pontiac should've been calling theirs a 302!

    Actually, they started calling it just an "XL" in '67, I believe...definitely, by '68...no more "Galaxie 500 XL".

    I'd be willing to bet they purposely rounded down just to be different from Ford.

    These name changes by the Big 3 are nothing compared to the naming used by Mercedes and, especially, BMW. Who KNOWS the actual engine size in a BMW these days!

    Yep, the numbers after the series on a BMW are basically trim levels at this point.

    more like trying to account for how much extra power the turbo gives it. Turns a 2.o into a 2.8, a 3.0 into a 3.5, etc.

    or they just make it up now, since bigger is better

    Long before there were tubos in the BMWs there were odball model numbers, with a '328i' having a 3.0 l engine, a '325i' a 2.8l, etc.

    That is one beautiful Galaxie 500 XL! My wife had one when we got married - yellow with black vinyl roof and interior. On a trip in the summer heat from Buffalo to Florida the glue on the front edge of the vinyl roof came a little loose. At speed and in the heat, unbenown to us inside, the roof blew up like a balloon! Other drivers were honking and pointing but we kept on going. When we pulled over for the night we were flabbergasted - the roof was about 1' high! You could push your hand in it but it wouldn't go down. In the morning after it cooled off it looked normal, but there was about a 3" 'loose' edge above the windshield. And the next day it blew up again!! Finally had a Florida Ford dealer inject some glue to hold it. Never had a vinyl roof again...

    Yeah, that's a 1968 Ford Galaxie 500XL probably looks better w/o the vinyl roof.
