    Custom...what a boring name.

I don't know what that white job is, but it's easy on the eyes.

It looks like a 56 Thunderbird wannabe. It is neat in shape. I have no idea what it is. I'm trying to figure out the driver and how that hair plays into the car's image for the advertisement.

Make note of the bulge on the left side of the hood, as well as the shapes of the windshield and rear fenders as well as the crease on the side of the car.

Those features all showed up later on a more popular cousin of this rare bird of which only 300 were made.

almost looks a little Triumphish to me (sorta like a Tr-6 if you squint just right).

You're getting warm, Stickguy. Keep squinting and you'll
figure out which TR it looks like. :P

Didn't they make some "fancy panted" Triumph that was sort of a TR4 Coupe?

Beaut! Isn't that based on the 156? I love it!

No it's a Rover 3500 V8, a classic British Police car! Rover's last great car according to the British press. I tend to think that crown goes to the recently departed MGZT 260 V8 or the 465bhp V8 if you can find one they made several proto types before going bust!
  • englishmikeenglishmike Member Posts: 7
On the R3500 did they not change the cooling system on later models, so only the earlier ones had the intake vents? Either way your right it could just as easily be an R2000. But who in their right mind, would keep an archive photo of that?
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,678

That's pretty much the story of the Triumph Italia 2000 Coupe

300 Italias were made from '50 to '63, it's really a TR-3A in an Italian (Vignale) suit but so was the TR-4 (Michelotti). In fact when I first encountered it, I saw sure that the Italia was Michelotti styled because of the resemblance to a TR-4 ('63-'67) and to the
TR-S LeMans racers of 1961-2, also Michelotti styled.

Vignale outdid Michelotti IMHO. The Italia may have been the best looking Triumph of all. You be the judge.

    The Imp
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,678
That's it, the Hillman/Riley/Sunbeam Imp, that devil's brew of bad handling, poor construction and lousy reliability that told the world that the British by the mid-60s had no clue of how to compete.

    That one's a 1968.

What do you mean 'plain'? That one has the optional chrome door handle shields! It's a Plymouth, I will guess a '50.

Are the chrome rocker panels and the chrome rock covers for the rear fenders a part of the plain jane? And the hub caps on plain jane should be just big enough to cover only the wheel lug area; this looks to have bigger hub caps which probably were an upscale item. Those were the good old days.

I'm gonna guess it's a 1949 Plymouth. The hubcaps have thrown me...and my eyes are too weak to read the script on the front fender, so I give up on the model. I think I remember the better model was a 'DeLuxe", but I can't remember the bottom line model. BigW.

Good guess it is a 1950 Plymouth, bhill.
It's a "Deluxe" all right and frankly I don't know if there was a model below (scary thought :surprise:).

The only other model name I can recall from Plyms of that era is Savoy (top of the line?).

As for "hubcaps" by strict definition those cover the Wheel Hubs and perhaps the lug nuts. The ones that cover the entire circle of the wheel were known as "wheel covers" ;)

I Googled '52 and '53 Mercs and came up with the same tailights (they hardly ever did that in the 50's):confuse:

Holden maybe? Not very good with their lineup if it is a Holden though.
  • negativenegative Member Posts: 107
I first thought it has to be a Holden something-or-other, because it's right-hand drive, but too large to be European. So I checked the Holden web site, and my guess is it's a Statesman International. But the grille is wrong. Maybe it's not the current vintage.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,699
Yeah that's a Holden Statesman. That house in the background is very Australian too.
  • navigator89navigator89 Member Posts: 1,080
It is a Holden Statesman, but also sold as the Chevrolet Caprice here in the Middle East market. The SS versions are pretty cool. Black paint, big exhausts, nice rims....
  • gsemikegsemike Member Posts: 2,448
If I can go back to the Plymouth, isn't it weird how the car has trim on the fenders but none on the doors?

The front on the Holden looks very much like the later vintage Caddy Catera.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,678
Right, it's the Statesman from the 1999-2003 generation.

Some kind of JDM upmarket Toyota from the 70s
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,678
Yeah it's definitely Russian. I googled "Russian cars and came up with this>>

    image

The car in front looks like a later gen of Navi's pic and it looks a bit like the Volga that will cease production next year. Not that I know squat about Russki cars.

I didn't have the patience to scroll thru the other 2,939 photos of "Russian cars"

Sorry andy, its not Russian although that was a good guess. Fintail is close with "Toyota from the 70s".

It's really a 1971 Toyota Crown. Google that and you will find the picture in the first row.

Both Hot Wheels and Tomy (Tomica/Pocket Cars) made toys of the bustleback. I liked that car when I was little, and had both examples.

It's indeed a bustleback from 80-85, but I don't know enough about the trim to tell them apart.
  • gsemikegsemike Member Posts: 2,448

That thing took guts, I will say that - as much as "art & science" anyway. I still like them in a way...they are so pretentious there is almost something amusing about the design.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
It just seems to me that they cut off half the potential luggage space by flattening out the trunk. And it doesn't look any better - that's what some dump trucks look like.

  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,678
yep it's an '81 Seville. Sorry Fin, I'd have to disagree about "guts", it really is nothing but a poor rip off of the RR Silver Cloud.

Isn't that trunk taller than a traditional trunk would be? I'm notr a GM defender and I know that it's a cheesey thorwback, but I always liked it.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
But they had to make the rear windows smaller to do that, and they still could have just made a square trunk lid and doubled cargo capacity.

Here's the type of truck I was thinking of:
