Can you give me the name of that dealer? I am interested in importing an 06 or 07 with DVD and Navi - been looking around for about 2 months now trying to find a good deal. I'm planning on making some day trips to Buffalo as I'm not really getting far via email or telephone but had one dealer down to 32900 on an 07 with DVD and Navi when we were in PA last month and sat down in person. Wonder sometimes if we should have made that deal but I wanted to import from Buffalo. I think it would be easier to do this since I've already researched the sales tax exemption and temp permit etc. for NY state.

Just purchased a new 5 pass w/ leather in Central Ohio. I paid 240 dollars over invoice.

    Hello all!

I'm new to this forum, so please treat me gently!

I'm thinking about purchasing a used 2006 Tribeca with ~17 K miles from a local Philadelphia area dealer. It is a limited version with navigation system and rear DVD. It seems to be in good condition. Dealer is asking ~$30,000, which I know is way over the top for a Tribeca with 17,000 miles and less than a years worth of B to B warranty left. I'm trying to decide a starting offer for negotiation purposes and a high offer that I just wouldn't exceed. I'm thinking of a starting offer of ~$20,500 with a drop dead point of about ~$23,500. I've seen similar models with half the mileage going for ~$26,000. Do you think this strategy is reasonable? Also, what would be a reasonable payment for any ancillary dealer costs, not including taxes (paperwork fees)? Any recommendations would be highly appreciated. :D
  • jeffmcjeffmc Member Posts: 1,742
Your drop-dead point of $23.5k is about the trade-in value for the vehicle in excellent condition, according to Kelley Blue Book. Edmunds' trade-in value is even higher, about $28k. Especially if it's from a Subie dealer, I doubt you'll get much below $26k, maybe$25k. The difference between 9k miles & 17k miles is negligible, certainly not worth an additional 10% price drop... it's already taken the biggest depreciation hit. If you can hold off purchasing, the '08 model is anticipated to debut in April & go on sale in June. Perhaps then it'd be more likely to find a used '06 for about $23k, since it'd be 2 model years old.

If you manage to find a Ltd w DVD & NAV cheaper than $25k, make sure there's nothing wrong with it, and jump on that offer! :)

I never really depended on the KBB for pricing. I did some research and found that the dealer invoice on the 2006 limited was $31,571. According to VinCentric, the depreciation on a 2006 7 passenger ltd is $8091 in year 1 and $2611 in year 2 (a $10,702 two year depreciation total). Thus, the actual value of the vehicle is somewhere around $20,869 - $22,175. I know that the dealer has had this vehicle for a long while now, and that someone at the dealership has been racking up the miles. The same wehicle was originally advertised on the internet with 8800 miles. There is currently ~2500 miles on the tripometer.
I thought that ~$23,500 would be the point that I would tell the dealer "thanks, but maybe another time ... call me if you change your mind" and walk out. I would expect to receive a call back by the end of the month, but if not, I'd continue to look around. I'm under no pressure to buy right now. My feeling is that this dealer has had a very slow January, even for a Subaru dealer. Also, according to a recent press release from Subaru of America, the December 06 sales of new Tribecas are down 42% from December 05. Unfortunately for Subaru, the Tribeca is their albatross, the Japanese Edsel! However, this is how I like to buy my cars, finding outstanding deals on quality vehicles that are out of favor with the general "current hot prestige oriented" buying public. My current car is a 93 Mitsubishi Diamante wagon, a high quality vehicle that was passed over by the general public. I bought it for $6500 six years ago and put on an additional 100,000+ miles on it since. Granted, the Tribeca is more than a little out there in styling (some may say it's uglier than a baboon's butt), but it does kinda of grow on you. However, it has excellent reliability and crash test reviews, and I can handle "ugly" at the right price.

I doubt you'll get it that cheap. I'm also looking at used 06s and the cheapest prices you see for a 7 pass Limited with Nav are right around $26k. Mileage varies between 8k and 22k and to be honest the higher mile ones are no cheaper.

Add the DVD and figure on $27k for a target price.

I seriously doubt you'll get it for $23.5k. For that much I'd buy 2 of them.

I'd say buy it even if you can get it for $26k, that's a grand cheaper than I think they would go.

from Van Bortel Subaru in Victor, NY.
I imported the vehicle into Canada. It cost me US$30412.5 including remote starter, reverse sensors, bumper cover and rubber mats. No tax because I don't live in NY.
The vehicle is great. However, there are some noise when turn up/down driver side window. The dealership here in Richmond Hill, ON had it re-adjusted and it's covered by warranty.
Special thx to cocopandan. You advised me to import a Subaru.

I don't quite agree. The new Suzuki XL7 it currently being heavily advertised and is going to be a competitor to contend with from Subaru's perspective. Even though the XL7 quality is still not up to that of the Tribecca, one can pick up a fully loaded XL7 at the base price for a 2007 Tribeca. Subaru isn't going to spend any further dollars advertising their "Edsel" version of the Tribeca until the revamped version is introduced later this summer. This will force the dealers and Subaru Corporate to give some substantial discounts and incentives on the current 2007 models. All of this is occurring at the same time that the used 2006 Tribecas from the one year and fleet leases are being dumped into the market. I think with diligence in watching available stock, some good negotiation skills, and a little patience, one will be able to snap up the used Tribecas at unheard of discounts.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I hope you're right and I'm wrong, because at $23k I would very likely buy one. I just haven't observed prices that low yet.

Maybe when the 08s arrive that will happen.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
XL7 is much improved, especially the engine, but it's a niche player that won't have a big impact on any of its competition. They'll carve out a little niche for themselves, though.

Their warranty is fully transferable, so as a used car it's the best warranty you can buy.

lkconfer - I like your strategy. Perfect conditions to buy. :) Diamante's a nice vehicle. Cars101.com says invoice, including destination, on a 7-pass Ltd w/DVD & Nav, is about $35,700, not $31,571. I think I recently read that Subaru has stopped (or slowed?) production of '07s to help reduce inventory by the time the '08s come out.

Just saw a used 06 Tribeca Ltd with NAV, (no DVD though), 3rd row, and only 13K miles ADVERTISED for $26,900 at a local dealer. CarFax didn't turn up any negatives on it. I made an appointment to go look at it. Maybe with a little luck and negotiation, I'll be able to get it for ~$24-25. A freezing cold snap and flurries in the forecast is keeping the prospective customers in their own warm houses and the dealer showrooms empty. This is all happening with only six business days left before the end of January. It looks like the "perfect storm" is forming for the buyers. I'll see soon. Keeping my fingers crossed ... :)
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Go get 'em. Good luck!

Best deal I saw was a similar car with only 7800 miles for $26k. The asking price is not too bad.

Sometimes winter weather actually increases the traffic in Subaru showrooms. That's more likely at the beginning of winter, though, I'd guess.

Like juice said, good luck out there! Sounds like you're a very disciplined, knowledgable buyer. Let us know how it goes.

I got my 06 Tribeca, limited with NAV for $26,500 last August (had 10,000 miles on it) and ever since then, this dealer runs adds every week in the paper offering similar ones for less than $25,000. Carla Subaru in Pawtucket, RI

No such luck around here. I search cars.com and within 100 miles the cheapest is 26k, and most are 29-30k.

I'm sure there are many more in RI, in terms of density.

The customer cash back on all 2007 Tribecas has increased to $2000 for the month of February. I'm excited, as the B9 I ordered in January has not come in yet, so the $2000 back will apply (rather than the $1250 that was in effect at the time I ordered). (I live in the Northeast, not sure if this $2000 is the same nationwide.) :)
  • flgirlaolflgirlaol Member Posts: 51
I was disappointed to find out when I bought my Tribeca in December that I could not use my $1,250 cash back along with the 4.9% financing! I took the 4.9% as that was better than I could find with my bank.
(Oh yes, it's February...i wonder what a Tribeca looks like???? Wish I had mine!)
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Cool.

For MY2006, near the end, you could get both the cash back and the financing. It was a sweet deal.

    Hi Tribeca Owners out there..

Iam planning on buying the 7 Seater Limited in a day or two..
Test drove the vehicle twice already, but the following question pop'd in my mind (after seeing the actual specs on the space).

Iam 5'10 and tried sitting in the rear seat earlier with no problem.. But after looking at the Rear Head Room Specs on Consumer Reports, noticed that there is'nt enough head room space for the rear seats -- I do not remember noticing the space left out when i was sitting...

Anyone has any comments / findings.. on this??
  • tupintupin Member Posts: 71
I'm 5'11 and my brother in law is 6'2" or so and neither of us have any issue with head room in the rear seat. I don't think this is an issue at all.
  • lkconferlkconfer Member Posts: 10
OK.... It took ~5 weeks of shopping and negotiation, but I finally bought the Tribeca. I targeted and negotiated on a used silver 2006 Tribeca Ltd that was the personal car of the wife of one of the dealership's co-owners. Carfax confirmed that the dealer titled the car and that there was no negative history. It had originally come to the dealership in August with ~6K miles, and was put into inventory in October with ~12K miles. It was on the dealership lot (actually being used as a "demo", meaning one of the dealership execs drove it around a lot) since October. Being a dealer personal car is not necessarily a "bad thing", since most of the annoying little warranty adjustments and repairs on the typical "new car" probably had already been taken care of. It had ~16K miles when I first test drove it. I followed my strategy for the first go around with the dealer, and left after we couldn't come to an agreement at ~$24K. However, I kept in touch with the salesman, and after the vehicle remained on the lot after the big President's day sale, gave him another call. The current desk manager gave him the go-ahead to let it go for $26,900. (I actually would have been a little disappointed if the dealer had actually lowered the price considerable on the first or second round of negotiation ... it would have meant that I left some significant money on the table.) The nearing end of factory to dealer incentives to move out leftover 2006 inventory by end of February probably also contributed to his selling decision. It was a bit more than I originally wanted to pay, but, after talking it over with the wife, we jumped on it. Actually, the Tribeca now seems to be well worth the extra few thousand since it is fully equipped with NAV, DVD, puddle lights, roof rack, premium stereo with 6 CD changer, all weather mats, front bumper underguard, cargo nets, and tow package. We found the original MSRP sticker in the glove box ... $40,160. I'm happy with the $13K+ savings.
So, all of you bargain hunters, the time is right for great deals, but beware, because at these prices the inventory is depleting rapidly. There may, however, be some great deals coming up on 2007s when the 08 Tribeca hits the market in a few months. Also, the 2006 2 yr. leases will be rolling into the dealerships soon. If you happen to go shopping at Rafferty Subaru in Newtown Square, PA (just west of Phila.), ask for Troy. I have no business or personal relation with him, I just think he did a great job and deserves a plug. :)

Remember my story about how I put in an order for my black 2007 Tribeca LTD in October and my husband picked it up in December and wrecked it?

Well, I finally got it out of the body shop this past weekend!

What an ordeal! This was the first time I have ever seen my car as I was out of town when my husband picked it up here in FL to drive it up to Atlanta to meet me at the airport with it. Well, he was with my mom in the car and they hit another car crashing the whole front end. The two of them were stuck in a small town in GA 3 hours from Atlanta and had to get my brother to drive down from there to pick them up. My husband had just picked up this car only 2 days before! Thank God for our sales rep (J.B.) at Eddie Acardi Suburu in Ft Lauderdale who helped them through this ordeal and got the car towed back from GA to a body shop in Ft Lauderdale.

Well, the body shop got the car in January and has had it ever since. They did a great job, but Suburu took quite some time getting parts in. One last part took the longest and it was some pad between the hood and engine. It was out of stock until mid-March! We couldn't get the car until then. We contacted a customer svc rep at Suburu (I wish I knew his name) and they were so kind and took one off a car off the lot for us. They did not have to do this.

I just love this car and I just LOVE the aftermarket Bluetooth phone system I had installed at the dealership. I can keep my hands on the wheel and talk on the phone. It's great and so much safer when I have to take a call with kids in the car. Today I tooked up a stereo cable for my IPOD and now I'm playing all my tunes in the car. But it's hard to compete with finally having the XM integrated in my car (my Lincoln Navigator had it added later). This car is so cute and it's so unusual down here where you just don't see these around. Kids also love the DVD but they were used to that from the other car.

Took it to the dealer yesterday because the auto-start button isn't working. They ordered a new motor for it and checked my brakes for me as I was concerned after the wreck that those were not working well. Everything checked out fine. J.B. my salesperson even gave me the keys to his car so I could take it to the mall so I didn't have to wait.

Did I also mention I'm thrilled with all the extra room in the garage after getting rid of the big old SUV? I have tons of space. :shades:

Nice that they took one off a car on the lot. Supply is short, too, because they're only using one assembly line at SIA (Toyota has taken over the other).

Finally got my B9 Tribeca March 3 that I ordered on Jan. 4. Dealer (in Maine) was fabulous in getting the exact car I wanted: Diamond gray 7 pass. DVD/NAV, Special Edition Accessory Package, camera, XM, starter, Pop. Equip. Group 1 & 2, Protection Group 2, Puddle lights, Retractable cover, Cargo Area Conv. Group, Hood protector, rear assist sensors. Paid $35,995. Well worth the wait!! :)

    Guys,

Local dealer has a demo '07 B9 7 Pass Limited w/DVD&NAVI and lots of other options. The vehicle has 5700 miles. Has it listed for ~$36k, hinted that I could get out-the-door price (price including TTL) for $35k. Their website says all 2007 B9's have $2k rebate, but not sure if that's from the dealer or SOA. I've been doing some reading on this forum and it seems that there is a $2500 or $3500 SOA-to-dealer incentive/holdback, but I can't seem to confirm. Can anyone verify please? Also, what would you guys consider to be a great deal (besides free :) on this vehicle?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
IMO the price on the demo sounds high. Very high, even.

5700 miles is a lot. At this point it is used, not new.

I've been looking for used 06 models, and you can get them loaded like that for $28-29k. What makes that demo worth $7 grand more?

The price should be in the low 30s, IMO.

    -juice
  • jeffmcjeffmc Member Posts: 1,742
I agree w/juice - $35k is too high for a demo. For reference, Fitzmall has a BRAND NEW '07 7-pass Ltd DVD/Nav for under $32. No way a used (or demo) B9 should come in higher, regardless of options.
    http://www.fitzmall.com/carfind/resultsb.asp?Search=NEW&ID=S404049&photo=SU077TM- - - &loc=FBS&mall=WF&year=2007&mk_code=SU

If you're in the market, go for a new '07. In addition to the current $2k consumer rebate, current incentives allow you to combine it with low finance rates, so your payment on a new one may actually be cheaper than used. Current factory-to-dealer incentives should be somewhere around $1500-$1800, so you should easily be able to get $3500 below invoice (including destination) plus low rates.

You can view current Subaru finance rates & rebates here:
    http://www.cars101.com/subaru/rebates.html#rates

    Hope this helps.

You can't combine the rebates. Frankly, I'm not sure why they offer two, since they're the same amount. $2000 if you finance w/Subaru, or $2000 if you don't. :confuse:
You should be able to get invoice, minus rebate, minus some or all of the factory-to-dealer incentive (which is probably about $1200-$1300).

Thanks for the correction, I realized too

I am in Vancouver and looking to import B9 back to Canada, not sure should wait another 3 month for 08 edition or take 07 now.

Will 08 edition be launched so early? According Subaru sales Data, B9 sells is not too well now.
  • jeffmcjeffmc Member Posts: 1,742
I'd at least wait 3 weeks until the '08 is debuted at the NY Int'l Auto Show, so you can compare it to '07. The '08 will go on sale in June... a typical time for new model-year Subarus to come out. B9 sales are about half of what Subaru was hoping for.

Not sure if you've seen it yet, but this page has some good info on importing Subarus into Canada.

I own a Jeep now and after lots of comparing, I think the Tribeca is the vehicle for me. This will be my first leasing experience, and I just want to make sure I get the best deal I can. After reading some of the other buying/leasing discussions, some folks have really gotten some great deals! There is also a lot of car/leasing jargon being thrown around, so if someone can take me through the steps and the numbers (or point me to the specific conversations that spell it out), that would be super :) Also, is it in my best interest to proceed with the 07 instead of waiting for the 08s? We are looking at the 5-psgr Tribeca (Limited) w/ Nav..I am wondering what is a feasible discount to expect since it is a demo model at the dealer with 5000+ miles already on it. Is 10% off about right, or is that too much/too little?

    Any thoughts, experts out there?

    Thanks in advance-
    Heather O.
  • jeffmcjeffmc Member Posts: 1,742
Heather - if this is a 2007 model, I'd shoot for about $26k, before tax & license.

Do you know the '08 is debuting in a couple weeks at the New York auto show? They are revising the exterior styling and improving access to the third row, but the big change is the engine. It'll be a larger 6-cyl that will give it much more "oomph", removes the recommendation to use premium-grade gasoline, and still gets about 10% better mileage than the current engine. Better mileage+more power+cheaper fuel=WOW! A Subaru CEO also said prices for the '08 will stay the same and more content may be added.

My suggestion would be to wait 'til official pictures are released, and if you like the new styling, hold out for the '08 when it goes on sale in June. You should still be able to purchase an '08 for at or near invoice, but not below invoice like the current models. Probably about $3000 difference from current discounts, I'd wager, but I think worth it. And the cheaper fuel & better mileage would help offset the cost over time.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I'd wait as well. Prices will only drop when the new one is more widely publicized.

There is a risk, though - supply is kind of short now that they're only using one assembly line at SIA. So wait for an 07 only if you are flexible about options and color, as I don't expect there will be many left over.

    Sounds good.

Invoice is over $34k for that model. That's a LOT of miles even for a Honda, so they'll probably wholesale it out for $500, if that. A dealer won't put a car that old on their used car lot.

I've been looking at purchasing a Tribeca and still have not made the decision whether to wait for the new design or purchase the old model. Received a quote from the local Subie dealer of $31,000 for a 2007 Limited 7 passenger with DVD & navigation, aero bars, and all weather mats. Is this a good deal? Just wondering if anyone has sat in the new model and is it worth the added expense. Better yet has anyone driven the new '08? Looking for any advice.

    Thanks,

Before I purchased the tribeca I looked at highlander ltd. I liked it but my wife didn't because the interior was very conservative "toyota like". The 3rd row access was kinda problem.
We looked at the tribeca and liked the interior and the 3rd access wasn't bad as highlander. We liked the different look of tribeca. The only problem we have is with the 90 gas and mileage.
The price the dealer quoted you is very good. Negotiate for dimming mirrors and mud flaps and bumper guards.
I have no idea about the 2008 model.
  • jeffmcjeffmc Member Posts: 1,742
Wait for the '08 - should be on sale in June. Subaru has said pricing will remain essentially the same and it looks like the long-term cost to own may be lower. The only non-Subaru folks who've sat in it and driven it at this point are auto reviewers, since it just made its Auto show debut.

Biggest change is the engine. It's 3.6L now, instead of 3.0L, yet Subaru made enough design innovations that the new engine actually weighs less. The new engine has more horsepower, much more torque, gets 10% better fuel economy AND runs on regular unleaded instead of premium.

Also good to go for the '08 if you'll use that 3rd row - the windows back there are larger now. Better visibility for the driver & less claustrophic for any passenger back there. Also, access was improved to the 3rd row by adding an assist spring in the 2nd row seat mechanism, adding grab handles, and by allowing entry from either side of the 2nd row now.
