So why wouldn't you do that? Oh - half of dealerships and factories would have to close? I thought so, too...

It also brings us car back into our used car inventory that can be sold at a lower price then our competitors, this will become huge once we begin to dominate the sedan market again. We will have two cars from a fit, finish, dependability, and performance stand point that are every bit as good as a Honda product and better then Toyota's offering that we will be able to sell for $1500-$3000 less in the used car market. Sounds like a recipe for success to me.
I was just pointing out that Honda's resale value does not come solely from what is now a perceived notion that they make a better car then every one else.

I thought that was Montana. Or New Zealand.
Whatever.
Anyway, the pricing for the '08 Accord came out ... looks to be about a $1500 bump across the line.
Base Accord stickers for $20,385, IIRC. Accord Coupe EX-L with nav tops $30K, MSRP.
Comment was made about the pricing gap between the Civic and Accord, and how the Taurus comes standard with the V6, and available AWD, for a starting price of $23K.
Should shape up to be an interesting battle.
I've owned 3 Accords and 4 Fords, so I'm not picking sides, either.

Listed for $28090.00 and they bought it for $25326 less $1000 rebate. Invoice was $26296.00.
Mack got me curious so I read a little about the Avalon and looked at some comparisons. I am not worried.

1500.00??
MSRP on a 2007 EXL Accord is 25,645
MSRP on a 2008 EXL Accord is 25,860
That's 215.00.
Because it was Mom and Dad, he only tacked on 3 points..
Plus... the service package is only good in Tennessee.. :surprise:

Resale on Fords is terrible compared to Honda and to a lot of people, that is very important.
The jury is out on quality. we keep hearning how much Ford quality has improved. Has it? After 150,000 miles we will know. " Initial" quality reports don't impress me.
The sale to the rental companies has kept the factories open and has killed resale values.
Having said this, I do believe a two year old Ford can be a lot of car for the money!

From the press release:
Compared to the outgoing 2007 Accord, the 2008 Accord pricing reflects a sales-weighted increase of approximately $600 (2.5 percent) across the entire lineup while adding approximately $1,400 in relative value through new standard features and enhanced equipment.
Autoblog had this to say about the pricing:
While we agree that the 2008 Accord is definitely more powerful and larger in every way, it's hard to justify the large price jump for features that the competition already has. The Toyota Camry starts out $2,000 cheaper at $18,470, and the Ford Fusion is $2,500 less expensive. While it looked at first like the Accord just made the midsize market even better, now it looks like the Accord has moved up into Ford Taurus and Toyota Avalon territory, leaving a midsize hole in the Honda lineup.
Autoblog Comments on the 2008 Accord Pricing
Mind you, I don't think any of the above will dissuade people from buying the new Accord in large quantities.

Hmmmm... have I stumbled into the Honda internet sales department by mistake? This could get interesting folks. We have a real life example here of a buyer going up against Hondas best. Let's see how the master operates shall we?
They won't build a car destined for a certain region unless they have orders fot 30 or more of these and it is EXTREMLY unlikely a dealer would order a 5 speed NAVI.
The five speed makes it a REAL oddball that would be very difficult to sell.
You bet a dealer would want an iron clad deposit on one of those!
Mack, that is something that drove me nuts with Toyota when I was looking at Siennas. The brochure shows exactly what I want, but Toyota doesn't deem to actually make one. Why have 10 models, if they only build 2 for a region?
Honda was always better about this. Few permutations, and you could actually get what they said you could.

PLEASE, we don't need this kind of misinformation.
Never heard of Autoblog but I wish they would get thier "facts" right.
Still, some people manage to find me.
My Parents are from Northern Idaho, they live way up in the sticks. In 1986 when the the Taurus first came out they bought the very first one in the area from a Ford Dealer in Spokane WA. Now they will return home with the very first new Taurus in the area. I guess they are just trend setters

That's probably funniest statement I've read this year
It's been widely known that massive fleet rental sales are generally detrimental to the company's finances, as they are low/no profit/loss (first hit), image damaging (second hit).
You still don't get it, do you? There is no use of selling gazilion trucks and cars if yur shareholders had to pay for them in lost stock value and banks start asking for their money back before the term ends. The supply part is what is exactly wrong with domestic companies. Their entire operations are built around supply, not product demand. Until they fix that their only way of doing business will be fire sales, cashbacks, zero percent and fleets. Surely they'll sell but what's the point?

I think it is. The 6-speed is built by AISIN and It was first introduced (surprise) on the 06/07 Mazda6 and was an instant hit. Trouble free and smooth shifting, and that too when the King of smooth shifts i.e. Toyota Camry was having the worst year by coming out with the new Mazda6 "inspired" looks and had tons of shift problems http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/WebX/.f10b8bd/0

I was not having a good day today. The guy I sold a truck to on Labor day didn't show up and didn't have the guts to call me and tell me why. I was getting my tag to go on a test drive and I notice I have a voice mail on my phone. "Hi Mr. Mack. This is Jenny, Johnny's wife. I wanted to speak with you personally but I can't get off work. I'm sorry to tell you that we are going to hold off buying the truck. However" end of message. I go back to my customer who came in looking for a Celica and was dismayed when I told her we no longer make it. But, I took her to a Scion tC which is a lot cheaper and has more standard equipment than the Celica every did. We go on a test drive and she tells me she always wanted something sporty. "What do you drive now?" I asked. "I have a 94 Camry. It's a great car but I want something new." she responds. "That's great. I'm sure you'll love the tC." I tell her.
We go on to the boulevard and she has a big smile on her face as she steps on the accelerator. "Wow, it's got lots of pep!" she says. "My husband is on his way to meet me so he can look at the car too." she remarks.
As we drive back to the store she points out her Camry and it's the funkiest one I've seen in a long while. It has a homemade spoiler, rain guards, and all types of stickers on the rear and side windows. I had to take a picture of it and will post it on my CarSpace
"Are you going to trade it? I ask. "I don't know yet. You probably wouldn't give me much for it. It's got 148 thousand miles on it." she responds. As we park the car I get out and start showing her the hatch and storage space along with the fold down/reclining seats. She is in love with the car and is very excited about it. Just at that time a big Chevy truck that also looks "pimped" drives on the lot. "There's my husband." she remarks.
The husband parks the truck and comes over to where we are standing. He looks like something out of the 60's. He has long hair tied in a pony tale, a thin beard, jeans, a t shirt with a vest over it and is chewing tobacco.
She introduces us and I can sense he feels uncomfortable. She starts telling him how great the car is and that she really wants to buy it. He walks over to the sticker and she tells him that the price on Scions is non-negotiable. "Is this the best you can do on this car.?" he asks. "Yes sir. As I explained to Jenny it's a Scion policy." I respond. He then starts telling her she can't afford it and that he is going to take her to look at a Chrysler Caliber and a Kia since they have very long warranties. I interrupt and say to him. "Johnny, even if you don't buy a car from me please don't put your wife in a Kia." Jenny than says 'I don't want to Kia I want this car.!" Johnny looks at me and asks. "How much will the payments be for 72 months?" Since we are upfront with Scion I ask if he knows her credit score. "It's around 780." replies Jenny. "No it ain't!" says Johnny. "You don't know what you're talking about." she tells him and the looks at me and says; "I had a bankruptcy six years ago when I went through my divorce but I cleaned up my credit since." she explains. "Ok, give me a minute and I'll see what your payment will be." I run into the store as Johnny doesn't want to come into the showroom. I go to Scion.com and "build" the car we looked at and estimate a payment based a score of 650 to be on the safe side.
I go back and tell them their payment will be around $346.00 per month. Johnny looks at me and asks. "You got anything used that she can get in for around $250.00 a month?" I look at my used car list and then tell him. "You know, your interest rate will be a lot higher on a used car." then Jenny interjects.;" I don't want a used car! If I did I would keep what I got!." she says...
To be continued on next post.
Mack
As I get back to the table Johnny comes in all excited and says: "I forgot TOYOTA made the Matrix. If you can get us in one of those for $300.00 a month you got a deal." he tells me. They both go to look at one as I go to the desk to work the deal. Fred the SM on duty pencils the deal and we are at $326.00 a month with $500.00 for their trade. It's on a red one in stock and we almost have a deal until I tell them it's a red one in stock. "Red?! What kind of red? Like wine red or bright red?" she asks. "Like fire engine red." I reply. "No, I want a black one like the one outside." she remarks. There is a black 07 on the lot but it's a manual tranny type. "I don't think I want to trade my car for $500.00. We'll just keep it. We are going to have to think about it and get back to you." she tells me. "Hold on one minute, let me see if I can find a black one." and I get up to go to the manager's office. "Fred, we almost got a deal but not on this one. She wants a black one and is taking the trade out of the picture." Fred looks at the dealer locator and there are some black ones out there and they are all 08's. "Tell her if we give her another $500.00 for the trade and get her a black one can we do business today? And get me a deposit." he tells me. "I can do that." I respond. I go back to Johnny and Jenny and they are both standing around the showroom getting ready to leave. "Hey guys, how about this. I'll give you $500.00 more for your car and get you an 08 black Matrix. Can we wrap it up today?" I ask. They look at each other and say "YES! an 08!" exclaims Jenny. We go back to the table and I tell Jenny I need a $500.00 deposit to get the car. As she is writing the check I show them the new payment which is $304.20 and Johnny says "That'll work." She writes a check for $500.00 and I staple it to the deal folder. They both leave and I tell them I will update them on the status of the car and should have it by friday. This will be the third vehicle I've had to dx from another store.
I go back to my Sienna customers and open one up and by God if the battery ain't dead. Just as I'm lifting the hood Johnny comes by in his big Chevy and asks me if I need help. "I got a dead battery. You got jumper cables?" I ask. "Yep, hold on." He brings his cables along and we get the Sienna going. He gets back in his truck and says: "Mack, thank you for what you did back there. I really appreciate it. You got me thinking about that Tundra now."

OK, now we're in the car, what do we do now without a key. We'll play with the knobs, oops we can't do that either everything is a push-button. That's it, push the buttons on our cell phone and call someone to bring us a key.
Ahhh those buttons; we're just not capable of functioning without them. Sometimes they even help. :surprise:

C'mon over!
What if the keys were locked in the car?
What if you are just getting something out of the car and you left the keys in the house? or your wife back on the beach 150 yards away has the keys and you just realize that when you get to the car?

I use the keypad a lot. It also allows family members to get their things out of the car or trunk without bugging me about a key. I can open the car to get in if my hands are full and cannot get the key out of my pocket. Just my view of it...
Don’t tell me you’re one of those guys.
What if you are just getting something out of the car and you left the keys in the house?
See above.
or your wife back on the beach 150 yards away has the keys and you just realize that when you get to the car?
That’s an easy one; I’d go back to the beach and tell her to get the stuff out of the car.

That's usually not a problem if the driver's door is designed so that it cannot be locked without using either the key or the remote.
What if you are just getting something out of the car and you left the keys in the house?
Not a problem at Casa Roadburner. Every vehicle is either garaged or unlocked.
or your wife back on the beach 150 yards away has the keys and you just realize that when you get to the car?
I'll gladly endure the 300 yard stroll if it keeps my car from looking like JC Whitney's has given me a frequent buyer's discount.

Plus, you can leave the car for someone with having a logistical nightmare about getting keys to them.
Mack, so your couple ended up with a Matrix, when she really wanted the Scion? Why did she let her husband change her car like that, or did she want the Matrix too? Unless they got a ton of accessories, isn't a tC just as cheap as a Matrix?

It works independently from the battery. It has its own battery so that is never an option. I also like it because after you close the door you can hit the last two buttons and it locks the entire car and arms the security system.
I personally do not like carrying a key and a remote entry just to bulky for me. The key pad removes the need for the Keyless entry. Thats what I like about the new keys we have, the remote buttons are built into the key.
I guess if you have never owned a Ford (the only manufacture to offer the option, at least at one point that was true don't know if it still is) then you would not know how convenient it is.
Kind of like a 6 disc CD player, you really don't need it because you can only listen to one at a time but it sure is a nice little option to have.
As long as we are on the subject of options, do any other manufactures now have there cruise control buttons on the steering wheel ? I know for a long time we had the exclusive on that due to patents. I didn't know if that had run out or not.
Not that I'm going to need it but since you should know this better than anyone, what is the word count limit for a post? :confuse:
Keep em comin.

Our other car is a 2001 Subaru, and that's a slightly different story - the cruise on/off master switch is on a panel to the left of the steering wheel, basically above my left knee when driving, but there is a little lever mounted from the steering wheel column that lets you set, cancel, or resume depending on whether you nudge down, pull it towards you, or nudge up, respectively. I wonder if that may be evidence of trying to work around Ford's patent, because although you can easily work the lever with your finger while your hand is on the steering wheel, it isn't technically mounted on the steering wheel, like I said it juts out from the steering column.
I actually like my stalk more than buttons, especially when you start getting other things there, too (like radio controls etc.), but it was never a big deal to me either way.

How well do these work? Are they just like the factory ones? We are on our second Ford with this option and love it. We are currently starting a search for a replacement car and this is the one option my wife NEEDS.
I also agree with locking the keys into the car. When we go to the beach or camping, we hid the keys and lock the door. No worrying about losing the keys in the woods or in the sand.
