Don't worry about the tires the 16" Bridgestone Dueler tires have been used by Infiniti since '97 on the QX4 are one of the best light truck tires on the market and have nothing to do with certain 15" tires made by a seperate division of the company.
and for BBfan1952 Infinit"i" is hardly in trouble any automaker that grew sales by 20% last year in spite of a downturn in the economy and who's parent is spending over $1,000,000,000.00 (thats a Billion dollers) to buils a brand new manufacturing facility in the US hardly qualifies as being in big trouble.
'97. i have no idea about how fair the price is since i'm not in the states.
the tires i believe are the same as the ones i had on my '98path LE. except mine had the 15" Bridg. Duelers on. I noticed excessive wear on those tires.......by 20,000km they were gone. was replaced with Michilen LTX which laster twice the distance and was still in good shape when i traded the car (i don't do off roading). the vehicle also seemed more sure footed in snow (same size tire).

i've got the LTX tires on the '01 QX4 now. others came with Dunlop i beleive. but luckily my shipment had the LTX.
Average mileage 97's are not auctioning for $23K. Maybe ONE, at a consumer auction. But NFW to your assertion that $26K is a "little strong". Low $20's, that's it. I probably to get out of my loaded '98 with 24K miles for $26.
I agree with #354 about the Duelers. They are wearing very quickly. I'm thinking maybe 30K miles out of them.
If you could get the extended factory warranty, it would be a huge plus. The 4wd system is excruciatingly complex. I'd hate to see a repair bill for one. Infiniti had (and continues to have) a MONSTROUS problem with the 1st generation q45's tranny. Kiss your $6K goodbye when than transmission goes, and it will. The drivetrain in the QX4 is a proven one, I'm just making a point about the value of am extended warranty.

The car is in nearly perfect shape with no dings, no interior problems. No rust (However, you should know that I did see a similar car, a 97 with 23K on it with rust bubbling on the inside lip of the hood, hmmmm...) The motor's never been touched other than for service. Although I bought it from a non-Infinity dealer, Infinity had the service history in their computer so I knew before I bought it that the miles were correct and that it had been serviced. The date in-service was 9/98 so there are a few months left of the 4-year b-2-b warranty.
Price paid: 23,400 and he wasn't moving from there. I did get a few goodies thrown in, but nothing of any significant financial consequence.

i'd like to add the fact that i am a completely happy qx4 owner, and i will continue to tout the qx4 to those who consider purchasing it. remember that infiniti_lemon's case is but one of many manufactured and sold qx4's. not only that, but i have had impeccable service as well as clean loaner cars. i guess i take it personal when a problem with a qx4 arises. and in that respect, i have (not so much as previously) the confidence that infiniti/nissan will deal with it in the appropriate manner. i advise anyone who has had a great or horrible experiences with their qx4 to contact infiniti/nissan on infiniti_lemon's behalf to express dissatisfaction with how they've dealt with his case.
on another note, because we live in a topdown business world, we need to address the root of the problem, rather than lay too much blame on the dealers. it sounds like they attempted to fix the problems (barring problems introduced during fixes) but to no avail, following recommended procedures. it's difficult for them to help more when infiniti won't help them. therefore, the vehicle's problems are manufacturer sourced, so it is an issue with the manufacturer.

Finally received a letter back from Infiniti in response to my final repair request on the weld problem and the repurchase request (both from @ a month ago). It says that they did a thorough examination of my vehicle and found no problems with it, so they aren't going to do anything. Their previous letter said that the tech rep drove my vehicle on December 4 and found no problems, which is untrue. I guess they are just trying to fool themselves, because they have not done any examination of the vehicle since they gave it back to me on December 1 (other than a few minutes repairing a recall item (ignition ring in interior) on 12/23. I don't know why they are making such outlandish claims.

I've seen numerous postings basically asking the same thing...but I'd like some advice from all you QX4 owners...
I'm in the market for a new SUV and I have narrowed it down to the Pathfinder LE or the Qx4. I realize they are virtually the same vehicle with the QX4 being the snazzier of the two.

I like the exterior style of the Pathfinder much more than the QX4. The QX4 is just a little too "tarty" for my taste. Although the wheels that come with the premium package look great! I like the wheels on the Pathfinder LE as much.
I love the interior of the QX4 vs. the Pathfinder. I like the "Lexus" like dash, the wood trim (yes, I know its fake) that covers the dash and the console + the leather and wood (I know, fake) steering wheel. The Pathfinder has white gauges, that are apparently all the rage these days, but I don't care for them. I also noticed that the console in the Pathfinder is just plastic...cheap looking plastic @ that. Does anyone know if you can get wood on the console of a Pathfinder as an option?
I haven't studied it much, but based on the postings, it appears that the QX4 does not hold its resale value as well as the Pathfinder. I am looking to finance my purchase, not lease it. I generally keep my cars 5+ years or more, so resale is somewhat important to me. Should I be concerned?
Most of the reviews I have read on the QX4 in car rags, have not been that positive...they generally always end with something to the effect that your better off buying a Pathfinder and saving the extra $$$. Your thoughts?
Is the Infiniti service really worth the extra $$$'s you spend @ time of purchase? I hear a lot of complaints from folks regarding Honda dealers, but I guess I have been spoiled by mine. I didn't feel hassled during the purchase of my Honda Prelude. When you bring your car in for service, they offer a free loaner car (you have to schedule it in advance) and they wash my car each time free of charge. Everybody is friendly, helpful and professional. What does the Infiniti dealer do above this? What am I getting that I am not getting @ my local Honda dealer?
What about the purchasing experience? What is different from Infiniti than say Honda or Toyota? I have several friends that drive Lexus' that just go on and on about how wonderful they were treated during the purchase of their Lexus...what was your experience with Infiniti?
I want to be courteous to my fellow drivers out there and I am a little concerned about the QX4's HID lights. Have you had car drivers complain about the HID's searing the backs of their heads @ red lights, etc...? It really is a concern, believe it or not...
What about insurance costs for the QX4 vs. the Pathfinder?

The high cost of a 5 mph bumper ding is totally ridiculous, but if you look at the poor excuse for a bumper all plastic, it is not surprising. It is no wonder insurance rate are so high and going higher. It is too bad that you have to buy a German car to get a bumper! Look at the report, not one American or Japanese car makes the grade. That one good thing Jimmy Carter tried to fix with bumper impact standards. We don't even have a height standard. Anybody had their car hood smashed by a 4x4 truck bumper 2 1/2 Ft off the ground. Enough, I get fried thinking about it.
Bottom line, if I had to buy today, it would be the QX4 - mainly for this reason (at least this week!!) I've bought really nice cars in the past from dealers who offer everything from entry level to higher-end cars. What always bothered me was when the mechanic that just finished working on a $12,000 Golf, would then jump to my Corrado SC fully loaded with leather. I always noticed grease and smug marks after repairs. While there's no guarantee, I would rather pay $3000 more for the QX4 and know the mechanics respect the dollars people spend on their autos and treats the cars accordingly. I'll keep you posted as I get closer to my purchase.

Thought of something I forgot to ask. Does anyone out there have a QX4 that does NOT have a moonroof? I noted its an option on the QX4 (Standard on the Pathfinder LE). I don't want or need one....but seems every QX4 I look at, has one. I rarely open mine on my Prelude...to me its just one more thing to rattle...Are they that hard to find without a moonroof?

So now I have proof that I've lost value, dealership repair orders that indentify frame repair, and the overwhelming feeling that it's time to get a lawyer. Actually was contacted by 2 dealerships from other parts of the country who saw my site and said they were shocked to see Infiniti acting like they are in my case. Both of them advised me to get a lawyer. I am looking into it immediately.
Not only is it an issue of being a lemon, but now I know that I have a factory defect that evidence of the repair itself diminishes the vehicle's value by several thousands of dollars. I remember asking the service manager at Marietta Infiniti how this repair affected the value. he told me "well, you'd have to point out the area for anyone to notice." Yeah, right. It was the first thing the appraisal guy saw when he popped the hood.

You probably should have stuck with the the dealer you purchased it from...by leaving them and going to another dealer, you let them off the hook...should be their responsibility. Besides, the more pressure you apply to them the more likely you are to be "heard"...what incentive does Marietta Infiniti have to work with you? I'd go back to Troncalli...they will see you coming and hopefully, think "jeez..he's back...what do we gotta do to get him off our backs?"

What about Consumer Reporters on your local TV stations? All the major networks in Houston have a consumer reporter or group that help folks in the community with issues such as yours. If a local TV crew showed up @ the Dealer asking embarrassing questions, you might see how quick they come running to your assistance.
Have you e.mailed your web-address to the dealer and Corporate? You should get the e.mail addresses of the various folks your dealing with @ Infiniti and e.mail them the web site too.
Good luck to you...like I said, you've given me food for thought....sounds like you got a lemon to me...just not sure I can conclude that they are all as bad as yours sounds.

• as for noticing some of the problems before buying, none of them were apparent until later. The scratchy dash glass only showed up one day when sun hit it through the moonroof. The technical rep from Infiniti told me that it looked bad and needed replacment. The roof rack is intermittent, popping up at only certain speeds. The flaky dash panel degraded over time until I noticed it. Believe me, I looked at the vehicle VERY carefully before I purchased.
• the mildew smell is something that the dealership called "common." They daid they deal with it all the time- basically moisture in the AC system.

• As for staying with the purchasing dealer, I left because the service was horrible. The people I dealt with their were not very courteous, and there was basically no follow-through. Also, the loaner cars were so dirty it was embarrassing. Plus, I thought that I might get better service moving to another dealership. As for Marietta Infiniti working with me, I expected them to be honest and do a decent job. Right now my main focus is the manufacturer, because the defects are factory-borne- especially the loose body joint that was re-welded. The dealers are also a major part of the problem, but I am after the manufacturer for resolution.
• I have read plenty of negative info about the BBB autoline to not head in that direction. Right now I am weighing options, and have been lining up a lawyer with the recent revelation about the diminished value.
• I am in the process of contacting consumer advocates. Will let this board know if anything there happens.
• Have sent the company my details. I've also been contacted by dealers in other parts of the country who are trying to help. I've been told by 2 Infiniti dealers today that I should get a lawyer.
• I am not claiming that all Nissan/Infiniti products are bad. Just pointing out to all of you folks how a guy that ends up with a lemon is being treated by this company. One of the Infiniti delaers I spoke to today said he would be "livid" if in my shoes.

Let me throw in again another way to look the pricing and a definate way to save money on the purchase. Consider going to Canada to buy. I did it in September and regular readers have followed posts from over 20 others who have done it since. The US dollar is still very strong against the Canadian dollar. I did a lot of research and calling and found dealers willing to sell just above their cost. A QX4 AWD with Premium, Sport, and sunroof sells for about $32,000. A Pathfinder LE AWD with leather goes for just over $28,000.
It really is not difficult at all to do. I've seen people from one coast to the other do it. I had posted some details above at #330, but just email me for more information. I'll be glad to help.

-found out today that not only does the weld problem affect the value, but might impair the use and safety as well, since the vehicle's body is no longer as-designed, and the repair might affect how the body and airbag react to a collision.
I like the idea of going to Canada to purchase a vehicle if it involved significant savings except for all the vehicles in Canada have those damn daytime running lights that I abhor.
The Canadian comment did make me think of something else. Did anyone pay at or above sticker for their QX4? A lot of the sights I've reviewed indicate that there is a large supply of QX4's and not a huge demand, which means significant deals on them. True?

You can disconnect just one wire to turn off the DRL's. And you should find the savings to be pretty good. The US dealer invoice is $34,899 and list is $38,525 for the vehicle I mentioned above. At the right dealers, they will sell in Canada for just about $32,000 even (including duty). Let me know if you want to check it out. It sounds too good to be true, but that's the way it really is.

Our salesperson just called to offer a 2001 4-wheel drive QX4 with the sunroof and premium packages (everything but the heated seats and limited slip, which is the Sport package) for $500/mo (all-in including tax, etc.) for 48 months, otherwise same terms as existing lease(15k and $.12 per mile over), but nothing down (other than first months payment), no bank fee, no doc/acquisition fee, no cap cost reduction, etc. and they will take us out of our existing QX4 lease cost free (even tho we're now 6,000 miles over the 15K annumal allowance), no termination charge, etc.
Seems like a great deal to get rid of the current 6,000 excess miles free and to upgrade to new car with vastly-improved 240HP engine, Xenon lights, memory seats, steering wheel audio controls, upgraded interior, etc., since we'd otherwise still be paying $438 for another 14 months to drive the old QX4.
Any thoughts?
The price of $32,775 for the qx4 with premium package, sunroof and rear wind deflector includes all charges except taxes, tag and title. The destination charge is included. When the dealer mentioned advertising fees, I refused to pay. The salesman dropped the issue.
Where are you in price with everything except tax tag and title?
You may consider purchasing the car with infiniti's promotional 3.9% apr. In passing, i.e. no negotiating, I was quoted a lease price of about $520 a month for 48 months, no money down (I am not sure if that included taxes). I thought it was better to buy the car. With such a good finance rate, I didn't even put any money down.

The lease terms were also good for this price range. 39 months, 48,750 miles for $504/month, $1700 sign and drive (inc. sec deposit, first months pymt, license and 300 cap cost red.)
if they are on an infiniti lot, look for those which are "certified" with extended warranty terms. the original warranty has, or is about to, expire at 4yrs. i don't think that anyone has been complaining about anything particular to the '97's. my '98 had its brakes, all 4 (rotors and drums), go bad at 8K miles. it was treated as a defect and repaired under warranty.
the old 3.3 engine is probably a hard sell at this point given the much more powerful suv's put there.
look for a low mileage '97 for just under or over $20K. don't believe the asking prices they're probably in the $24K range, which is a total joke!

While recounting my story to a lawyer this past week, I remembered that after the first bit of welding in late October, I put a call into Consumer Affairs. I asked if the repair affected the value and structural integrity of the vehicle. Steve Torres in Consumer Affairs called me and told me that the weld actually made the vehicle sturdier, and there was NO affect on the value. While it is now apparent that they were completely wrong about the value aspect, how could Consumer Affairs know what affect the repair had on the integrity of the frame?
I feel that Infiniti should have known that a repair like that would affect at least the value. Why did they tell me different? Is this why the service manager at my dealership told me that if another QX4 came in with this problem he would "keep it to himself" about how it was repaired?
Where is the customer service that this company so touts?

i'm sorry to hear about the "individual case" of that lemon and the customer service to that individual. wish you the best of luck. but i'd like to mention that i got a good discount on my vehicle and the dealer still replaced the QX4 logo on my vehicle twice for free becuase it got stolen. my point is service has been great in general.
i am a very picky person interms of cars and mechanical issues in general. but this car did
well to more than satisfy me.
i am also an x-owner of a 98 pathfinder
and a current owner of a 95 maxima
so my experience is not based on the past two months but based on few years with nissan/infiniti.
i still wish the lemon guy the best of luck and i would not expect anything but a full refund for his case if all that he's claiming is true.
For the people who chose the QX4 over the pathfinder becuase it was worth the money due to better handling....please not that the QX4 has the same handling and suspension as the Pathdiner as far as i know. but you are right about the extra insulation and few extra features. it also has the same engine and transmition.
