I saw the $4000 factory rebate on local newspaper ads from local Mazda dealers.
That was a month ago. Not rumor at all. It is real. As wabuyer said, it is probably $4500 now.
I finally purchased my 2008 AWD GT CX9 ! Am happy with the interior comfort and the handling of the car. Not too crazy about the audio system and the little add-ons to make all the audio/auxillary line-in/Satellite Radio work, but got it all installed at the dealer and have everything working now.

The buying experience at the dealership was a breeze. I got an e-mail quote from the dealer which was the price I paid for the car. Quick, no hassle and no haggling.
They stayed a hour more after the working hours to finish off my paperwork, and I am very satisfied with the service there so far. It's a young dealership, and it shows.

This is ~20% off MSRP, or roughly invoice less $4000 in manufacturer to dealer cash back.
I decided that this is a very good, not the best, but fair deal.
in case others are interested, my rough survey of this forum (excluding trade in sales) is that prices paid this month are between 18-22% off MSRP.
i used the mazda site to locate a CX-9 that fit my needs.
i then requested a quote w/~$500 in extra add ons (rack,cover, mat) and got a ~$31K offer.
i then counteroffered and settled at ~$29.5K.
i had made clear to the dealer that i did not want to haggle back and forth, but that i recognized he had a right to earn some profit, so he could take or leave my counter-offer (otherwise i'd reluctantly buy a pilot).
Going to sign Lease Papers for CX-9 today and was wondering if anyone knew what a "Philadelphia Assessment Charge" was? It is a line item for $433 and I am trying to figure out if it is bogus or not.
If anyone has any definitive knowledge please let me know ASAP.

No matter what, you should take it into negotiation as well.
Watch out for doc fee also, some dealer charges too much for that (I would say $50 is reasonable, no more than $100).

Only problem is dealer wants me to close by end of month and it's a 12 hr round trip that i am unable to make.
I asked my local dealer to see if they could get it as they had done on my previous mazda. They quoted $31000 and would not budge so i walked away. Do you think this was a reasonable offer and will better/similar deals be available at the end of the quarter/september?
it is almost exactly the same pricing as i got (see above).
as i note in my posting, i and you could probably squeeze another 1-2% off MSRP -- i'll leave to you whether that is worth the haggling (and whether dealers get to make a little money, too.)
of course, make sure that the dealer does not sneak in any non-governmental taxes and fees.
as far as buying now and/or driving 12 hours and/or getting through a local dealer, i'd saying the following:
the deals after the end of the month MIGHT get better, but they MIGHT go away, and the selection in inventory is ceratinly going to go down.
with gas costs as is (i assume you need to drive an extra car, with another person, to pick up the new car), i probably would not drivbe 12hrs to save $1000 dollars -- unless you can pair the purchase trip with a weekend getaway enroute (camping, beach, etc.).
also, a for your local dealer to get the exact same car, it is going to have to be shipped (plus paperwork) and that's why the local dealer needs to charge you $1000 -- maybe he'll go down some ($500?) if you walk in with cash on the table.
is there not a close enough car locally with a good price?
remember a lot of options (roof rails, cargo cover, etc.) are dealer-install and require $0 or minimal instalation costs -- the mazda website (http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/displayPage.action?pageParameter=modelsSpecs&ve- hicleCode=CX9) let's you know which options are dealer-installed.
so, maybe you find a loacl car with or without low cost dealer options that gets you close enough to your dream car for a good price.

if you are funding through a bank loan, the timing may get a little more tricky, also the above assume that your bank, the dealer, and your inisurance company are technologically savvy, and can get all of this done via email/fax.
if you want the car, call the dealer and tell him you close the paperwork before the end of the month, and pick up the car later, and see if he'll work with you to get that done.
I would expect them to be available for sale in the US before the end of September.

Took 4000 cash instead of financing and got additional 500 for Mazda loyalty.
This is about 1400 under invoice before the rebates. Others reported up to or as much as 2500 under invoice ($10000 under msrp). I am not sure that was available with my dealer, but another few hundred more might have been available had I had more time.
Against Toyota, Honda, GM and Acura we really felt like this was a value and style winner. I am a past Mazda owner and they do hold their value with reasonable maintenance costs.
As i've noted in this thread, for CX-9s a good deal is 18-19% off msrp, a very good deal is 20-21% off msrp, the best deals are 22-24% off msrp.
if you buy a loaded GT with $45K msrp, then a $10K discount (22% off) should be fairly easy to get.
if you buy a stripped Sport with $28K msrp, then a $10K discount (36% off) will be virtually impossible to get.

The reason that there is such a discrepency in pricing is that not all dealers will reach the volume bonus, that is why some are doing incredible discounts and others are not.

It is for Mazda to cover their cost of doing business in certain geographic regions. Personally I think they should raise the MSRP nationally to cover it, because it does at time become a sticking point in negotiations.

From recent posts, I notice that folks in some areas are getting close to 22 - 28% off MSRP or around $10000 less than MSRP on CX9's.
Wondering if any has got similar deals in the VA/DC Metro area. If so, please share your experience with OTD price info.
I am planing to report this with Mazda as customer experience issue.
This is for a CX-9 sport with a few options (msrp ~32400), the sale price written on the car was ~26700. I would've paid a little more if they only negotiated straight.

Go to the Mazda website and chose build a car. This will allow you to search for dealers who have the color and option combinations you can tolerate. The next step is to contact the dealers and ask them for a price. Create a spreadsheet to keep it all straight as it gets complex comparing cars with different options and it is easy to lose perspective on how good (or bad) a particular deal is. You can search in a 250 mile radius. You can extend this by stating you live in another town and starting the process over. Once the bids start rolling in, don’t be shy about using them against each other, keeping in mind that occasionally multiple dealerships in the same region have the same ownership even though they may not be explicitly branded as such. Some dealers will deliver for free, some will charge a small fee. You can get a car delivered by a third party for between about $350 to $1000, see ebay auto as a starting point for details on how this works. If you are asking for a quote from a dealer you are not willing to travel to, the delivery options need to be part of the initial query or else you are not being fair to that dealer by getting a quote when you are not serious.
The larger the dealer, the better your chances are at a great price because the volume credits are complex and have multiple tiers. If you shop properly, the odds of a smaller dealership winning your bid are not good. The people living in the Northeast, and parts of California have a big advantage here (perhaps Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, etc too).
I don’t know if anyone had the chance to investigate the interesting autobarn post, unfortunately their stock didn’t match my requirements. I suppose they could have something not listed in their inventory but with some many dealers to talk to and the fact that they were far from me I had to draw the line somewhere. The odds are very slim of getting your best deal on a location, you need to find out who has the car they are trying to trade for and deal with them directly.
I have seen several posts of “$10,000 off” but these seem under close investigation that they are either teaser units or other special circumstance. For instance, Sutherland in Atlanta was doing $10,000 off, but this was on a group of oddball Sport models that had leather added. Not to say this wasn’t a tremendous deal, just that it did not apply to the whole lot (Sutherland is still pretty strong on their pricing). As stated before you may hit this number if you are enough of a sucker to pay a couple of g’s for a navigation system that can be smoked by a $250 Garmin.
You can try for $10,000, but someone shoot me down if I am wrong, I think $8500 off is a realistic goal for most of us. Be prepared to jump on one at that discount if you really want the car.
I agree with most everything you say. Unlike you though, I have NOT seen 1) supply slowly dwindling, 2) units becoming scarce, or 3) having to hit the number by being a sucker.
I currently have emails from a couple Internet Mgrs offering $9K off on ANY in-stock 2008 CX-9. Both dealers have several models: Sports, Tourings, and GT's. I've been monitoring their inventory, and many of these units have been in-stock for several months, if not longer.
For me, it does pay to hold out for $10K -- Several dealers offered $10K off '08 units during Labor Day weekend, and personally, I'm not getting too excited about taking ownership of a vehicle that gets 15 MPG in the city! If they fly off the lots, so be it! I'm happy to continue driving my old Volvo till the wheels fall off.
I don't think the 41k+ models are moving at all - even now.
Other than the oddball Sports from Sutherland, I don't recall hearing a bona-fide account of a CX-9 going for close to 10k off unless it was loaded up with expensive options. If someone is taking on $6000 MSRP in options to get another $1500 off, short of those that REALLY wanted those options... the math is not favorable.
If someone out there got 10k of a unit in high demand it would be helpful to hear about it.

May I ask what do you think will happen to your loosely installed $250 Garmin in the event of a serious crash? Will it become a projectile that hurt passengers in your vehicle?

I guess that is the risk you take with any loose object in a vehicle. If I was concerned about this I would just do without a navigation unit rather than pay $2500 MSRP for one that gives bad directions.
If you want an actual information from the people who actually got a deal; just take time to read the last 5-6 pages of this thread and you will see that most if not all answers will be there already.
The method that s1216 suggested has been discussed many times before, including this particular forum. It has been in all threads of CarSpace forums. This method didn't work for me personally as none of the dealers in the area could match the deal I was offered by Metro Mazda. Later on, as I learned, dealers got much more agreeable after they learned about the legitimacy of the deal I got.
The statement about the "the larger the dealer, the better your chances..." is utterly wrong. You will have much better chances with mid-size dealerships that struggle to meet its sales goal. While the large dealers have enough sale volume to decline any out-of the ordinary offer, the small dealers simply cannot afford an extra manufacturer's incentives for high-volume selling and as such, cannot offer you any extras to top off the manufacturer's rebate.
The statement about a dealer "not" having something in their inventory is total nonsense. All new dealers' inventory is 100% trackable through mazdausa.com; if you can't find a given car through the web site, the chances are either the car is already under some sort of an agreement or sold, or not new. From my recollection, even the Demos must be listed under dealers' new inventory, but this needs to be verified.
And, finally, the blurb about "a teaser units, or other special circumstance" is a bunch of bolonies. After I got my car with $10,400 discount and reported it on this and couple other forums there were several other people who were able to get the same (or better) deal after my post. The better deal could've been gotten when they got the car with more options. I guess the consensus is this: the more options your car have, the more wiggle room dealer has for offering you.
The truth is: with enough persistense and with losing a "new-car fever" you should be able to secure a deal you want, including a 10,000 off.
I'm sorry if I stated something that seemed obvious, I just thought I might help someone. I'll admit that I haven't read all 1200 posts in this forum, I have just been following it for a two months. I did track down your post where you got 10,383 of MSRP on a 38+ vehicle. Truly an outstanding deal. This is the type of information I am looking for, thanks for calling my attention to it. However I did feel that instead of being followed by people who "several other people who were able to get the same (or better) deal" I found most people said they could not touch it. I guess we're just not clever, persistent, or lucky enough.
I totally agree that a dealer will take you more seriously if you can present another offer. Unless you have the time to visit each dealer and get those deals on the back of a business card, an email or a special posted on a website is the only way I can think if to do this. My experience has been that if simply tell someone about a strong deal they either don't believe it or will act like they don't. I have purchased my last four cars from an out of state dealer and the local dealer has never been able to match the price, I wish I had your good fortunes on that. So the email method has been great for me. I didn't claim to invent it, I was just making sure everyone was aware of the good tools on the Mazda website as they have helped me greatly.
And yes teaser units are part of the car business. As when I contacted a dealer who advertised "$10,000" of any CX-9 in stock" and offered mt $8000 off the one I wanted and a dealer who advertised "$9,000" of all CX-9s" and offered me $6000 off the one I wanted. Maybe someone in the right place at the right time took advantage of whatever these were, but it wasn't me.
As far as large dealers vs mid-size, large dealers have sales goals too, so I'm not sure I agree with your logic. I would rather go with the guy who is paying less for the car in the first place.
And for cars disappearing from inventory, I've been told it takes a couple of days for a sale to clear from Mazda's computer. I suppose a dealer may have some motivation for telling an interested customer a car is no longer available when it really is, but I can't explain why that would happen over and over again across multiple dealers in five states.
