My Liberty arrived at the dealer today. We went to check it out to make sure everything is ok, and it looks good. Has to be prepped, but Im picking it up tomorrow. For those interested, it's a Black Sport, Slate interior, moonroof, SelecTrac, Security Group, Tint Windows, Fog Lights, CD Changer, and a few others. No abs or side airbags. I'll post a pic tomorrow night.

No, didn't order the sunroof, dealer said that they were holding off on sunroof orders, and we didn't really feel that it was necessary (it's an 800.00 option). We ordered it the night of 6/6/01, and are expecting delivery around the 16th or 17th of August. Roughly 9 weeks. He anticipated about 8 weeks from order to delivery.

We are trying to stay on budget, so the limited wasn't worth the extras that we wanted. Besides, I like the black fenders with the Patriot blue exterior, gives it a real 4x4 look. Don't get me wrong, the limited is an awesome looking truck, but like I said, we wanted to stay within our means, and the dealer met the price we were expecting to pay, plus knocked off about 500.00 for the order. Fullerton Jeep, Somerville NJ.

Overall, was extremely happy with our order. Our dealer was super nice, called every two weeks or so to give us a status, and today he called with the rail car#. So I'll be checking status over the web, and will hopefully have photos after our vacation. Planning on a family trip to the Outerbanks of NC, so hopefully some 4x4n' on the sand dunes will be in order.

PS: Tony, good luck with your new vehicle. What part of PA do you live in? If your somewhere near west NJ we should think about a Jeep Liberty East Coast club or something to that effect. Just an idea.

No I haven't looked at those dealers. I checked with Classic Chrysler/Jeep in Raynham, Central Jeep in Norwood (I think the biggest Jeep dealer in Mass) and Tarbox Jeep in Rhode Island (largest dealer in RI). But after driving it the other day, (seats are VERY firm in the Liberty Limited with leather), the wife likes the Grand Cherokee better (softer seats, larger interior) So I don't know whether to go with a leftover 2001 Grand with about $7000 in depreciation already, or a loaded 2002 Liberty for almost the same price.

How would I go about finding who the Jeep Fleet Managers are in my area (eastern Massachusetts)? And would I be able to work with a Fleet manager if I have a trade-in? Or do they work strictly with getting new vehicles only?
  • mad0865mad0865 Member Posts: 176
Does anyone know the website (once again) to trace the rail car status? I used the one link from the Ram status website but it says car empty. Was just curious. Thanks for the assistance.

    depends on where you live?

if in the East go to www.csx.com

I am mentioning this with the permission of the dealership for DFW area folks looking for a fair price. MidCities Chrysler-Jeep, Arlington, Tx is overing an internet $500 over invoice deal. Contact Tina Montgomery....Internet Sale Manager...who is also a pleasure to work with.

My previous experience with another nearby dealership, which will remain nameless, was a complete nightmare. On May 30 I place an order for a Libby Limited 4WD w/ABS/Select-trac/Sunroof ect. After waiting a month I called DC only to find out the order was cancelled due to dealer allocation....of course the dealership had no clue this had happened. Being a glutton for punishment I let them reorder only to find out last week per DC that they had ordered a 2WD w/no sunroof and it was already in production.......I went balistic. Of course the sales manager tried to put the blame on me because I was getting info from DC and it was "messing them up??" The moral is: if you place an order have DC VERIFY that all of your options were ordered before it's to late also don't tolerate Dealerships that don't communicate with you.

My Liberty will be ready to take home next Wednesday.

    Details:
    Limited Edition 4x4
    Patriot Blue / taupe leather
Package 27G, Heated Seats, CD changer, mini computer, Moonroof

I have a question for Liberty owners who have the running boards. Is the installation fairly simple? I plan on purchasing them over the Internet.

I was poking around some 4x4 sites today and found that aftermarket lift kits are already available for the Liberty. Most were just spacers but they were already 2-2 1/2". Looks like the 4x4 crowd is going to take the Lib seriously.

Purchased a blue sport less than a week ago and am extremely happy. Sold my other car privately, so I bought one off of the lot that matched most of what I wanted. Would have liked the ABS, but strangely enough out of 9 on the lot, none of them were pre-ordered with ABS. You can easily get carried away with options.

I'd like to get a front end cover or something to keep debris from doing a job on the front end, but do not see accessories listed for the Liberty on the Jeep web site. Also, how do they plan on fitting the tailgate with a bike rack with the spare tire there? I'd hate to have to put the bikes on the roof.
  • dflynn100dflynn100 Member Posts: 2
They have a spare tire bike rack:

Would this be too much weight on the tailgate door?

...for the right SUV. I have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee coming off lease, thank goodness. This was the vehicle from hell as far as reliability. Pure junk. I test drove the Escape...a very cheap feeling vehicle plus too many quality control issues. I test drove the Liberty hoping Jeep got their act together. Again, just a very cheap feeling vehicle not to metion a poor past re: quality. I have read here that it's going to be different now because of blah, blah, blah. That is exactly what Jeep is counting on. Customers who fall for that nonsense. Do you really believe that just because they build a new plant that that automatically means quality? C'mon, get real. They said the same thing about the re-designed Grand Cherokee and just reading some of the posts about the problems with it made me sick. With all the money DC is losing, with all the lay offs (which means very pissed off employee's that remain because they don't know who is next to get the ax), does anyone really think that the past quality control issues have been rectified not to mention the very poor dealer service like telling me they will not replace the front brakes anymore even though it's obvious they are defective!!! I think anyone who wants to gamble their hard earned bucks on a Jeep product is nuts, especially a first year Jeep model. Prior to the test drive and after, I tried looking at it from many different. To me it's just a very odd looking vehicle. Certainly not as bad as the Azzwreck, but close. I hope you guys that are buying them aren't doing so because you can be the first on your block to own a new model year vehicle. That would be very foolish and prehaps very costly in the long run. It's nice the Liberty has garnered some awards already. Unfortunately, that has nothing to do with what happens down the road. A road that jeep doesn't appear to travel well. I did test drive a Toyota Highlander and the difference in quality, fit and finish was dramatic. Talk about smooth. The Liberty and Escape are no where in the same class as this vehicle as far as the feeling of quality of a well put together vehicle. It may not be able to go everywhere the Liberty can, but that's not an issue for me as I've yet to go off road with the Jeep I have. The Highlander ride is outstanding, and the drivetrain is silky smooth (the same drivetrain in the Lexus RX-300 including the 220 HP V6). I still have a few other SUV's that I want to look (including the Xterra) at but so far nothing comes close to the Highlander. Even the interior screams quality, not made up of cheap plastics that aren't put together right. My friend, who is a big Toyota fan, told me that unless you test drive the Highlander and compare you'll never 'move up' to the next level, assuming that what's out there is good enough. Boy, was he right!! It does cost more then the Liberty but not by much. Toyota's reliability is already proven, about as bullet proof as you can get. When I think of all the time I wasted in the Jeep dealership, not only arguing to get the darn repairs done, but the time waiting for parts, the time waiting for the actual repairs.....I could scream!!! Thank goodness this was a lease. I feel sorry for the person who buys it as a used vehicle. For those of you that already have your Liberty's, good luck!! For your sake I hope I'm wrong. As for me, I refuse to a part of the 'Jeep Experiment', hoping that Jeep finally gets it act together AFTER buying their product. No, I won't walk away from a Jeep product, I'll run!!!! Fool me once, shame on you...fool me twice, shame on me!!!
  • rfleckrfleck Member Posts: 11
I won't argue with you about the quality of the Liberty because it's an unknown quantity & only time will tell......but I just priced a Highlander here at Edmunds with similar equipment to the Liberty I have on order and it dressed out at MSRP $29,020. Since I'm paying $500 over invoice at $24,500 I'll take my chances.

One question, how long have you worked for Toyota?(just kidding) Sorry to hear of all your troubles with your GC. I really have to disagree with you regarding the Liberty feeling cheap. I have driven every midsize/small SUV in the past year. I have even gone to auto shows where I could comapre them all in the same day. The Liberty is extremely solid and substantial with a beautiful interior. The Escape can't even compare. The Liberty also won me over with the fact that it has a low-range transfer case, good ground clearance, and a much beefier suspension than most others. As far as looks, that's a matter of opinion, but comparing with the Aztec is unfair! I LOVE the Liberty's looks and have had many compliments in a very short period of time. The Highlander is basically a Camry with a high center of gravity. If I am going to drive an SUV i might as well have the capability to go along with it.

I hope you feel better after venting, because your post really offered no helpful information. Good luck shopping, I guess we won't be seeing you around this board often!

I've been driving a minivan for 9 years and am considering buying a Liberty to replace it. We just test drove one today and overall liked it. We're not used to sitting so high though and thought it had a sort of unstable, top-heavy feel to it. Wasn't sure if this is just because we're not used to SUV's. Does anybody have any info on rollover ratings or safety info on this model? Thanks for any input.
  • keninplacitaskeninplacitas Member Posts: 120
Boy! You are obviously very mad at the Jeep folks. Did you really feel that the Liberty was a cheap feeling vehicle? You seem to definitely be in the minority with that opinion (at least when comparing with similarly priced SUVs).

You don't seem to have a problem with spending a few extra bucks. If that's the case, I really suggest you try out the Mercedes SUV. The price difference between it and the Highlander is not much different than the difference between the Highlander and the Liberty. My Audi service department provided one as a loaner recently. On later picking up my car, I commented rather positively on this fine machine. They mentioned that they've had several sales come about as a result of loaning out this SUV. Sure wish I could afford one.

By the way, the likelihood of your being dissatisfied with your Mercedes sales or service departments would be very, very slim (as opposed to what I've heard about dealing with the Toyota folks).

Anyhow, good luck in the search for your ideal vehicle.
  • winbrowinbro Member Posts: 235
first off I will say that I have never owned a jeep product or an suv for that matter. I guess that puts me in the "fool me once" category. Like Tony, I have spent the last 6-months looking at SUV's in this class. I had a mazda tribute on order but cancelled after I realized I could never get one because they just dont make enough (FORD escape gets all the production time). but I'm glad it happened because after you get past the great tribute looks, there is a lot of serious quality issues to contend with.

I bought a liberty because I also liked the looks of it, read all the early reviews and saw in the brochures that it stood apart from the competition for solid toughness and 4wd system. but a major reason I bought one was also because I "just had a gut feeling" about this SUV. Time will prove that right or wrong. Most of this gut feeling is that I believe a big part Daimler/Chrysler's financial future is riding on this vehicle to be a success. and I think it will be. after all, even with the problems the GC has, where I live, you cannot take a 3 mile drive anywhere without seeing at least dozen GC's.

I have had trouble finding the correct Liberty in the North Atlanta area. I wanted a fully loaded Limited, 27G, Silver and with ABS and sunroof ad a bare minimum. One big Norcross dealer had mainly sports and only one Limited that was stripped (no options), another dealer in Buford, of smaller size, had 3 total one of which was a limited without any options once again. A dealer in the Roswell area had the nerve to charge a $1200 availability fee over MSRP for the fact that they had some on their lot (they were also sans options by the way) . It seems this is common practice in Roswell since the local Honda dealer does the same thing. I found a dealer up in Jasper GA that had over 25 in stock and all the Limiteds were loaded with every option except the CD changer - two did have this also. I bought a silver Limited with 27G, ABS, sunroof, locking differential, heated seats, trailer tow package, side airbags - for $26637. The MSRP was $28175. I also got more than I expected for my truck on trade. It looks like this area has no problem getting loaded Limiteds.
Now for the Toyota myth. I have owned three of these buggers. The last one rotted in my driveway because it would not quit leaking oil. I had it back to the dealer five times in two weeks. The problem could never be fixed. The other two had trouble running at highway speeds and keeping one cool inside. I was never so hot in a car before. The AC is marginal to say the least. I decided after looking at the Highlanders in my area (my neighbor works at the local Toyota dealership) that I would go with an american vehicle this time. The Highlanders were way over priced for another Camery platform. I also looked at the Tribute - no true 4WD, Subaru Forestor - not high enough, Ford Explorer - nice but expensive and out of my budget. I decided that I would go with Jeep. I also got a rebate for being a realtor from Jeep. So far so good. I think I made the right decision. At this point I am satisfied with the dealer and the Liberty.

Check out the latest Motor Trend Magazine. 48 hours in Death Valley...

They put the trucks through hell... Liberty did great.

Guess what they used as a support vehicle to haul extra tires gear etc... an XTerra- they KNEW that would make it!

I also visited several Jeep dealers in the Atlanta area. I had a very bad experience at one Jeep dealer, ordered one and then canceled it. I then went to Jasper Jeep and the difference is night and day from the other dealers. I have a Liberty Sport with ABS and Selec-Trac on order. Good luck with your new Liberty

Sorry you had such a bad experience with the Liberty. Other family members have had great experiences with the Cherokee and the GC. If you can afford the Highlander, go for it. You mentioned in your post that you rarely go off road. Then my question to you is: Why buy a 4x4?
The Highlander is nothing but a Camry with a lift and extra space, plus about 6grand added to the price.

We purchased our Liberty after many months of searching for the right vehicle. Trib/Escape - Cheap feeling, and all of those recalls and problems. GMC Jimmy - A lot of plastic, and a lot of problems. CRV - Nice, but no cigar for the money. The Liberty (in my opinion) is a great looking 4x4 family vehicle, awesome driving experience, and a lot of years of experience behind it. Good luck in your search.

Did they mention if Motor Trend editors brought anything to make their trip a little more comfortable? I've driven in a few Xterras, and to me the ride is awful. Not comfortable at all, plus the horrible gas mileage.
  • hotcoffeehotcoffee Member Posts: 218
You must either be easily irritated, or very tall/short.

To me (5'10", 178#) X is very comfortable.

Don't get me wrong, I like the Liberty A LOT, I test drove one a BUNCH of times, almost bought one before choosing the X.

I like ABS standard, limited slip standard, 6 disc standard on the X SE. And the 3.3L is a VERY tried and true dependable motor, albeit less than impressive MPG for the power. I might add, the Lib doesn't boast a scorching 0-60 either for that matter.

15/19mpg on the X vs 16/20 on the Lib. That 1 mpg doesn't add up to much and could be easily overcome by good driving habits.
I don't regret NOT buying a Lib, but still think they are a great value and okay looking.

But from here on, I'll stay at the Xterra board to sing its praises since this is a Liberty board. To all good luck, sweet truck!
  • winbrowinbro Member Posts: 235
the recent posts have eluded to liberty's competition. well most ARE cars with SUV bodies.

the triscape is supposedly based on a mazda 626 chassis, the Cr-v is a Civic the highlander a camry, Rav-4 who knows corolla maybe.

the ones that come close are the xterra and the suzuki XL-7. I would also consider the forester closer only because subaru's 4wd is as legendary as jeeps. if jeep wrote the book, subaru wrote the epilogue. of course all these assesments are IMO.

I just got a Liberty Limited and tried to remove the unsightly stickers from the visors. The two on the driver's side peeled off nicely, but the one on the passenger side was really stuck on. Using Goo Gone, I finally got it off, but it appears that there is a patch of glue that is embedded in the nap of the visor. I've tried Goo Gone and a toothbrush, but that didn't seem to phase it. I've also tried Energine stain remover with no success. Does anyone have any other ideas for removing the glue without destroying the visor material?
  • wedgeguywedgeguy Member Posts: 20
Can anyone who got the trailer hitch option with their Liberty tell me if the locking pin was included with the hitch? Mine didn't include one and I'd like to find out if anyone else got one before I go bug the dealer about it. Thanks.
  • tonysracingtonysracing Member Posts: 80
I don't think they are meant to be removed, in fact I believe they're mandatory government warnings about rollover, airbags, etc. Im not sure there is any way to cleanly remove them.

The torque converter does not appear to lock up in overdrive on my 4WD Ltd. All the other gears are fine but on a flat road rpm at 50/55/60 mph seems to be a constant 2000 only when I lift does it fall. Has anyone else expirenced this is it normal. My old Grand seemed to lock in OD

Congrats on your new Lib! I got my Escape Friday...too bad the weather was so sucky for you. Here the weather was great.

I notice you don't have cross bars on your roof rack. I've seen vehicles without them...the Escape came with them. I thought they were supposed to come with?

BTW, I took a trip to Nicolet National Forest in Wisconsin this weekend. Saw some great scenery, and also saw a Dodge Durango that was completely covered with mud from head to toe, driving along at 65 MPH. You couldn't even see what color it was! I guess they had fun that day...about all I saw up there were SUV's--I felt like I was in good company. Didn't see any Libs, though, strangely enough. Saw 3 Escapes.

    You stated:
"I might add, the Lib doesn't boast a scorching 0-60 either for that matter."

I agree with the ABS being standard. It should be. But stating that the Lib doesn't boast a scorching 0-60 times? I just watched Motorweek on PBS on Saturday, they said that their Liberty did the 0-60 in 8.8 seconds. That's about 2 or 3 seconds faster than the Xterra.

Tony - Awesome looking Sport. Should be receiving ours in a week or so. Will also post pictures somewhere.

You are comparing a mini-suv(Liberty) to a mid-size suv(Highlander), these are not in the same class. The Rav4 is the vehicle Toyota produces in the mini category. So wake up! Many are saying the Highlander looks like a stationwagon and not a suv. From any angle it doesn't look right-too plain.
  • winbrowinbro Member Posts: 235
edmunds puts the liberty in the mid-size category along with the highlander and its not suppose to be.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
You actually think the Rav4 and the Liberty are both Mini-SUVs?

The Liberty weighs probably a good 800 - 1000 pounds more than the Rav4. In fact, I'm sure it's quite a bit heavier than the Highlander too.

    Bob
  • winbrowinbro Member Posts: 235
    i think the liberty s/b judged with the tiscape's; cr-v; xterra; XL-7;

the rav-4 is by itself somewhere

its the highlander that I think is the odd man out. as the commercials say "nicely equipped" for the highlander means sticker in excess of 30 grand. at that price there is a lot better trucks (real trucks) out there.
  • tonysracingtonysracing Member Posts: 80
Filled up for the first time since I had it. Mostly city and some highway. A lot of idling while showing it to people. Got 15.8 MPG, I guess that's not too bad considering it's still new. 250 miles and no problems yet.

    Tony
  • indylowflyerindylowflyer Member Posts: 148
The Rav4 should be included in the comparisions; cost/size are comparable. The x-terra doesn't belong, it mid-size and costs over $30,000 like the Highlander.
  • winbrowinbro Member Posts: 235
I never saw an xterra in the 30k range
  • lovethosesuvslovethosesuvs Member Posts: 95
Is if you consider all the smallest SUV's offered by their respective mfr's--Lib, RAV-4, CR-V, Escape, etc. would all fall into this classification.

Tonysracing--how do you figure out MPG? I've heard there are different ways.

For example, if I were to assume I had a full tank of gas when I left the dealership (they said they filled it, and the needle was just short of full), I went 300 miles before a fill-up. So, with the Escape tank of 15 gal, that would mean I got 20 MPG (that's with a lot of stopping, hills, turns, and curves). Is is that simple?
  • lovethosesuvslovethosesuvs Member Posts: 95
That's not considering how many gallons were left in the tank.
  • mikepromikepro Member Posts: 25
Hmmm... thought this was obvious but...

    1. Fill up your tank.
    2. Reset your trip odometer.
    3. Drive until you need a fill up. (The more miles you go between fillups, the more accurate)
    4. Fill up your tank.
    5. Read off the gallons used from the pump
    6. Read off the miles from your trip odometer
    7. MPG = miles/gallons
