You are right about the gorgeous interior. I'm not a tan guts guy, but it really goes well with the electric red. No moonroof, no xenons (minuses). A true Sport Package Car with a 5-speed (pluses). The thing I really don't like is the armor all on the engine compartment. I wonder If it were cleaned up to hide something. The other thing is the location of the dealer. Copaigue, NY is on Long Island's south shore. You have to scratch you head and wonder if it is a "Sandy Car."

CARFAX says it was hit in 2003 at 16,000 miles, otherwise nothing. Former Connecticut car, then to PA, four previous owners, lease car, auction car, should have about 109K on the odo. I suspect "t-boned" because it says 'damage to left center pillar', but I'm guessing here. Leased originally and for quite a few years thereafter. What's that about? Multipe owners on multiple leases? Don't get that. You might find it interesting to check Yelp reviews on this dealer. :)

I have absolutely no desire to attend a Super Bowl. For a true fan, I think the conference championship would be the ultimate game to go to. To me, the Super Bowl is such a corporate event.

I think you're right about that - the AFC Championship game last Sunday was truly incredible. I even told my son that I think that was the "real" event to be at. Basically, I'd like to go to the Super Bowl where my home team is participating once in my life. And since you never know when it'll happen again, NY, here I come! (Hopefully)

That is a nice car. Me, I'd be afraid of a 12 yo 109k mile sports car. I would be afraid it had been abused and more afraid of my ability to determine such.

How long would you plan on keeping a car like that (may be a dumb question for this crowd)? If I spent $7,000 on a car I'd want to keep it for a number of years or at least 50k miles.

I just read an ad for that yesterday and thought "damn, that sounds interesting." 360hp, 0-60 in 4.9s, and 29/36 mpg is impressive! (infiniti site says 5.2 and 28/35 for AWD version)

It's really a great piece of machinery. The MPG obviously drop quickly if you take advantage of the quick 0 - 60, but I find it has plenty of power in normal driving. I have the AWD version, love driving the car!

I think I hit 6800 or so on the 2014 E350 Sport Sedan which may have been a record for me.

I am at 1923 miles on the CLS 550 - almost a third through its useful life, give or take 1000 miles.

Actually, I think I'm hooked on this one - awesome power and styling. I won't be looking at cars again until the 2016 E Class comes out in 2015 (late spring). I might go back to an E if they create something spectacular. I know there will be an E 300 Sport Sedan with a 3.0 liter 6 bi-turbo producing 360 hp which will replace the current 3.5 liter 302 hp engine.

Should be an interesting vehicle - they are totally redesigning the E Class sedan.

@breld, I am your man for the Philly part of the trip. I am in south Jersey, about 15-20 minutes from downtown philly (20 or so from the airport). Ping me if you would like contact info or have questions.

Actually, are you talking about showing him Philly, or NYC? either is quite easy on public transit.

Where are you staying over? assume you are renting a car? unless you plan on dealing with public transit late on Sunday.

BTW...what did you find out on the Lincoln's "non-starting" issue?

Not even remotely looking at buying another vehicle, but when I was still shopping, I almost bought a BMW X1 i35. My BMW dealer is not pushy, so he didn't know I bought an Acura TL instead.

However, he did send me an email for this yesterday.....

    http://www.sweeneybmw.com/new/BMW/2014-BMW-3+Series+Gran+Turismo-f9d990980a0a00020094094304268483.htm

He knew I wanted something with some room. I had not really looked at the GT versions of the 3. This looks very nice, though.

Dealer said it's been sitting on the lot for awhile. I guess GTs aren't too popular. Right out of the shoot....$5K off MSRP + $500 for my BMW CCA membership, plus $1,000 off for some sort of promo corporate is running. I have a "Drive Event" certificate that I think is worth $750-$1,000. Not sure if it's still valid or not, though.

If I had stumbled on this when I was looking, and could buy it in the $40s? Kind of wondering why he didn't show me this before (oh....wait, I was looking at X1s and not GTs).

well, yeah, doesn't really matter much for this crowd. Me personally? I dunno. I never have plans one way or the other. I've put only a few thousand on some. We've already put 25k on the beater volvo since I bought it (which means, in 1.5 yrs, we have driven it nearly as much as the first owner did in 16 yrs). We drive that quite a bit. And I have absolutely no plans for selling it. It is the perfect spare care, IMHO. Just wish the wife wouldn't treat it like a trashcan when she uses it.

As soon as I can get around to tidying up the Benz, that will go on the block. So we would have put maybe 4k on it during our ownership.

At least with that bimmer, I'd have a very good idea of what I'm getting into and everything i'd need to do to keep it on the road and in good running condition. Not that I'm a buyer right now.

Never figured out why it did it and hasn't happened again. A car that old doesn't store much info unless the CEL is on when you test it so I may never know.

GG - not good. It doesn't fit our needs. I did not realize how drastically cold weather affects the range. My wife refuses to commute in it thanks to her range anxiety, and I drive too far to use it in anything but ideal weather and when I'm not in a rush.

As a result, we have only put 7500 miles on in the first year. Another year to go and then I'll be looking at maybe leasing a hybrid for the right deal.

Well, as with Bradd, I may hit you up as well for any advice on getting around from Philly. I've reserved a hotel in Langhorne (my brother travels to Philly for work and recommended this particular hotel) and do have a rental car to get around, but obviously don't intend on driving into Manhattan. I was thinking there may be a location I can drive to and then get into the city via public transit.

Don't really have that much time - land in Philly around 6:00 pm Saturday and then most of Sunday will likely be dedicated to being in and around the stadium. Of course, I still need game tickets. :) I've been told the best bet may be to simply buy them the day before or even the day of the game.

My wife has spotted a couple of Tesla's on the road in the past few weeks and commented on them. So, I did a bit of research.

Yowza! Lot of money, and lots of pricey options. What I found amusing was that in the cost of ownership they factor in the gas savings. Your monthly payment may be $1000, but Tesla shows it as $750 because you aren't buying gas. Oh, and the federal and state tax savings are built in as well. $13,500 total here in Colorado.

They do have a CUV coming out next year that is intriguing, the Model X. Probably out of my price range as well.

For the type of driving I do, a Volt might work well.

you could probably take over qbrozen's lease if you were so inclined. I thought we could benefit from an electric car like a FIT EV because my wife works less than 3 miles from home & does the majority or her errands in town. I'd be scared to drive it on my 65 mile RT commute. I think the FIT EV's range is somewhere in the low 80's, so I'm not willing to take a chance with such a small buffer.

I'm in the same situation. I've thought about running an extension cord from in the office, but I think property management may frown upon that. I also worry someone might steal the plug. That would really suck.

Take Amtrack from Philly right into Grand Central station that puts you right at 34th street. You and your son can walk up to Times square area at 42st.. There is NJ Transit you can catch out of Penn station or Grand Central that will take you to the stadium. Another alternative if time is a factor is Amtrack from Philly right to NJ by Giant Stadium.

Buying tickets around game day may be near impossible unless you pay big $$$. Remember this is NY.

If I was going up to Jersey to see the Super Bowl, unless I had tickets in hand (and great seats), I'd stay home. Instead of spending the $3000-$4000 it would cost me for transportation, meals, hotels, etc., I'd buy a 70" Sony super HD TV, a great sound system to support the new TV and have a catered party at my house on Super Bowl Sunday for 10 of my best friends. That's a Super Bowl our whole family would never forget - and we'd have a great video/audio system for our memory of the big day.

If I had good tickets IN HAND before leaving, that would be a different story.

saw something today that as of sometime today the game was not sold out. Though lowest price tickets were $1,600?

Breld, with your timing, you will have to get up real early to get in NYC. Plus Langhorne is not that close to the meadowlands (a good 1+ hours). And you need to drive anyway. Since I assume you would need to be at the stadium early to try to get the tickets, that makes a side trip difficult.

but, my recommendation (assuming you have the tickets in hand by Saturday) is take the N J turnpike to the Secaucus station exit (very close the the stadium). It is basically a huge parking garage right off the turnpike. You can jump on a PATH train into midtown. Then take the train back out, and quick drive to park at the stadium.

I am not sure exactly how close it is, and if there is any direct access to the stadium complex from the parking garage (and of course, back after the game).

Getting into the stadium parking is very easy from the turnpike, as long as you take the western spur.

Ive been to 2 Giant superbowls 86, 90. I loved the atmosphere and all the hype leading up to game day.. Now I like to sit home and watch from my TV.. I have Giant season tickets since the Giants moved from the Polo grounds to Yankee stadium in 1956. My dad got 4 season tickets that me and my brothers still have.. Back in the day 1956 we had Vince lombardi as our offensive and the great Tom Laundry was our defense coach.

Hahah! Well, I suppose that's one advantage we have in the far north.... there's no shortage of "headbolts" available. :)

Of course, effective winter range might only be 20-30 miles.....

I am definitely going to try to have tickets in hand before getting to NY - buying them there may work out, but I'd rather save myself the anxiety beforehand.

I just started looking into the travel to and from the stadium this afternoon, so I appreciate all the advice - it will definitely help. For a lot of the parking, it seems you have to have a ticket in hand - another good reason to be prepared. Even for the parking at the Secaucus station seems to require an advanced parking pass. Bottom line, it will be good to plan ahead.

I may look at hotels for the first night closer to Jersey, though they will likely be more expensive. But that may save a bit of travel time the day of the game.

Again, thanks for all the advice!

As far as an electric car for commuting, given the usually much higher cost than their dino-fuel stablemate, would it make more sense to simply by a relatively inexpensive, high mpg fossil-fueler? Unless the tax incentives level the playing field, or even tilt the purchase price on the battery operated car. I do like the idea of a no fuel commute (as my round trip is about 20 miles), but at this point in EV history, I'd lean towards the Volt or i3 with the optional generator type solution. Still, not cheap up front.

Yeah, they are going to be really OCD on access and parking. Leave lots of time. Actually, with all the activities planned, I assume getting up there way early (bring a picnic basket!) and experiencing the activities outside the stadium may be more fun than the game (I assume they have a ton of stuff planned). Once you get through the gates and parked, good to go!

Langhorne is about 1.5 hours, so a bit of a hike. Probably can't get real close, but could probably get closer than that. If you are going in and out of Philly (back Monday?) better of looking south of the stadium, toward Philly. Somewhere toward new brunswick say, convenient to the turnpike.

did a quick look. Here's one available. http://reservations.sj.aaa.com/hotel/10028356-10204495O.html?ses=5c4dbb18a815b8195e3b8db3d077fd76&unps=y&lrp=3a4cda

one advantage to that is you can walk to the NJ transit station from the hotel, and take the train to secaucus junction. I assume they will have shuttles running from there. Assuming of course you don't want to drive. This is about 40 miles closer. Could probably get even closer if you want to look, though I have no clue at what point your cost/availability options start to suck!

Iselin is even closer by a little. still has access to the trains.

so, there are options out there.

I am definitely going to try to have tickets in hand before getting to NY

Thanks stick - I just booked a Hilton Garden Inn in Secaucus, with a rail station right near the hotel. I'll stay there Saturday night, and then I booked a hotel right near the Philly airport for Sunday night. It'll be a late night, but it'll be worth it in the morning, as we have an early flight out Monday morning.

By the way, since I've hijacked the thread a bit, I thought I'd give a quick review/update on the Passat. I've already put 1,800 miles on it in less than a month and have been enjoying it quite a bit. Very comfortable and roomy - which is why I bought it, so that's good. I continue to be pleased with the performance of the 1.8T - feels much more lively and responsive than the 170 hp would suggest. I've been averaging right around 30 mpg (got 32 on one of the tanks). That puts the range at a little above 500 miles, which is very nice for my commuting.

I had a little regret over not ponying up for the TDI, but with the strong performance of the 1.8T, and the relatively good gas mileage, I'm more than content with my choice. Considering the 1.8T takes regular unleaded, the price difference for diesel would eat up much of the advantage offered by the improved MPG, not to mention the higher initial cost of the car itself.

Because I'm enjoying the car so much, my only regret is that I didn't get a higher trim with nicer wheels and the touchscreen stereo/backup camera. Not that big of a deal though.

Uh, is that the sound of another punch I hear?

Good luck with your trip to NY/NJ/PA for the SB. Hope everything works out for you and your son.

Thanks, for the update Q. I wondered about those cars. I see them rarely. But, there's one that's always parked at my favorite Panera Bread every time I go there. I'll assume it belongs to one of their employees.

I spend a lot of time driving back and forth to the airport....80 miles round trip. I thought about picking a Leaf up used, as I've seen a few on the lots. So, from what you're saying, probably not a good car for that duty, especially given the cold in SW OH?

kyfdx....I've thought about a Volt, too. I just can't seem to find one used.

In my car search last year, I did test drive a Prius C. OK for a runabout - which is most of my driving - but the lease deals were just meh, so I passed.

I'm averaging about 27-28 MPG is almost 100% city driving, which is what the EPA estimated I should be getting. 4600 miles in just under 3 months.

    @Michaell

a friend of my wife's got a Prius V last month. Her previous car was an '03 or '04 V8 4 Runner (I think they still have this for the husband to drive to the train). I saw them at a school function last night (Bingo Night, my 7 year old won a $5 barnes & noble gift card plus 1 night of no homework). I asked them about it. "It's great. Has all the space we need, plus takes $35 in gas once a month."

Nice review on the passat. I was trying to push my son toward the cheap lease on the Jetta SE but he is still Fixated on the more expensive Mazda.

And smart move driving down to the airport. That drive in the morning can be dicey, traffic wise.

Now you just need tickets. Saw in today's paper the average price on the secondary market was about 3k. Ouch. And now that weather forecast is good sales starting jumping.

It was just a passing thought about the Leaf, or something like a Prius, for that matter.

I'm only spending about $150-$200/mo in gas with my TL SH AWD. Getting MPG of around 21 in the city, and 27 highway. I can live with that, particularly given I keep my foot in it most of the time.

@nyccarguy, please check in with them in a few months and post an update (unlike CCBA'ers, it takes longer for us "normal" folks to figure out if we really like a car or not. :D )

I read somewhere that it takes many years to break even on the diesel vs gas version. From an economic standpoint you did good. The diesel has different driving characteristics which might compensate on an emotional basis but as far as financially -- it won't happen.
