My last Mustang was a 1998 GT (the rounded one) and I always wanted the more squared off 2003/4. Back then they were $15k. This one being convertible caught my eye and I like the color. Also has cloth seats which have more bolster than leather.
My max bid will be in the $5700 range. I guess I'm not as spendy as Mr Shifty.
And no, explorer you'll have to procure a "brick" locally as there is no way I would remove a working Mach 460 from a Mustang. Excellent sound system. Maybe upgrade the speakers is all.
Still dreaming at this point. There's probably some guy willing to go to $7k. Who knows. The seller is only 30 miles away. I emailed questions, but no response so far. Oldfarmer would say "he's probably out burning the tires off of it" lol
I finally make my way over to the new boards to see how everyone is doing, and learn Mike and Richard have both seen recent losses in their families. You both have my condolences and I wish you and your families the best the through the difficult times.
Richard, I believe I'd make the same decision regarding the house and truck. The additional $20,000 makes for one expensive truck, not to mention the hassle you'd have to endure during the construction. I'm in car shopping mode myself. Initially we looked at a BMW diesel wagon and a Volvo V60 wagon. The 2015 Subaru Outback just released and we think it'll fit our needs a bit better than the luxury options. From our perspective, the only miss on the new Outback is how they packaged some of the options. We'd prefer to purchase a version with leather and Subaru's impressive Eyesight, but if we choose those options, then we're forced into navigation, push button start, and a sunroof, none of which we want. If we opt out of Eyesight then we can get leather plus a few other niceties like rear seat heaters and ventilation.

Welcome back to the fold Ty. I thought I didn't need or want a GPS unit, now I wouldn't want to be without it. No more maps...no more not being able to change your mind once you start on a trip. Also, tells you when to start moving to the right etc to make a cutoff.
A sunroof and push button start I could live without, but if you average the price of these options over the life of the car, factor in it will be worth more as a trade-in, I don't think that would be a deal breaker for me.

Thanks Driver! The difference in price isn't huge, about $2,300 to add Eyesight, sunroof, nav, and push button. The nav is no big deal as we'd just ignore it living in a small community. A mandatory sunroof is problematic to us, though. I've owned a couple of cars equipped with sunroofs in my life and absolutely hated the feature, to the point the sunroof became a daily annoyance. I've passed on many vehicles in my last few purchases because of the sunroof packaging. As crazy as it will sound to some, I'd rather pass on Eyesight than have the other options forced on us. I guess I'll just have to remember to brake
Our other option with Subaru is to go down a model to the Premium trim instead of Limited and add Eyesight without the sunroof (weird Subaru packaging). Oh, I was meaning to post a couple weeks back when I was in Germany on business. Wonderful trip and I made sure to drive versus taking public transit. Ahhhh, the famed autobahn. In two hours of driving I managed to drive an impressive two kilometers and never left neutral or first gear.
No joke. Two kilometers, two hours. The A3 autobahn.
As I walked around the Autobahn, literally, and conversed with the locals, it sounded like holiday traffic and a wreck were the causes of the gridlock. Nice people. German station wagons were everywhere loaded with gear and pulling travel trailers.
Later on, after getting lost in the country, and in the dark, barely avoiding deer, and eventually rejoining the Autobahn, I did manage 170-200 km/h for a couple of hours. At that speed I was simply traveling with traffic in the left and middle lanes. The separated white lines kind of blur together at those speeds.
I had a turbo charged gasoline Seat Leon FR with a tight suspension that handled the autobahn speeds quite nicely, but even so, I kept an eye on oil temperature at those sustained speeds to ensure the rental company wouldn't be charging me a rather lofty sum before they let me leave the country.
I did manage 170-200 km/h for a couple of hours. At that speed I was simply traveling with traffic in the left and middle lanes. The separated white lines kind of blur together at those speeds.
And you drove at those speeds (105 - 124 mph) without a valid German license? And in a rental car to boot? Wow!
Having the right car definitely helps. The A3 autobahn has segments of unlimited speed between the cities, and then it drops down to regulated zones of anywhere from 90 km/hr to 130 km/hr. At first I didn't understand the German signage and kept my speeds rather checked. Once I learned the speed sign meanings I stepped up my speeds to stay with traffic in the two leftmost lanes for the unlimited segments. For the regulated areas I kept my speed right at the speed limit in the right lane as I was concerned about the heavy use of traffic cameras.
It's amazing how fast the Germans will pass slower lorry traffic in the right lane, but everyone, and I mean everyone, is very disciplined about use of the different lanes. No hanging out in the fast lane, period. It was a refreshing experience to drive on perfectly maintained roads and along trained drivers.

I peruse Tampa CL for giggles and to buy cars in my mind. Today I was wondering what Mark VIII selections they had. Unfortunately some creepy dealers now include a million tags on their ads for other cars so no matter what you search for you get all their cars on your search list.
Here's a good example. Scroll down to the bottom of the ad to see what I mean.
How's the bidding in that convertible going. I revisited your link and it looks like your $5000 is still hi bid with 19 hours left. Or do I have to hit a refresh button? It says reserve not met. Does that mean your bid won't cut it?
2019 Kia Soul+, 2015 Mustang GT, 2013 Ford F-150, 2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible
Yes, if the reserve isn't met, then the "reserve sign" stays up. It only disappears if the bid meets or exceeds the secret number.
Also we should all keep in mind that eBay car auctions are not binding in any way. You can bid and then renege, or the seller can refuse to sell you the car at the bid price. The worst that could happen to either buyer or seller is a nasty comment.
Same for any real estate sold on eBay. Other types of auctions DO have protections from eBay.

Unfortunately some creepy dealers now include a million tags on their ads for other cars so no matter what you search for you get all their cars on your search list.
I've been seeing that for some time now. The answer is quite simple, just check the box for "title" in the search area at the top of the page. This means your search item must be found "in the title" in order to be a match.
Do these dealers really think pulling this stuff will make you buy from them?
I find it very hard to believe, but ...
There are things going on in Craigslist that are inexplicable. What about the ads with "email only" where they never answer your emails? Or the ads with a phone number, but no one answers, and the recording says "voice mail not activated on this account"?
I think about 50% of the ads on craigslist (at least for cars) are bogus, fakes, perhaps some kid playing on his mom's computers. And a very large part of the remaining 50% are curbstoners. It's getting out of hand, the people that run Craigslist need to take some kind of corrective action.
On the other hand, when I was selling my Passat last month, Craigslist is what worked. I also tried Autotrader, and received no responses. So I guess we just have to deal with it.

Yes, that's what it means. I'm not surprised, a GT convertible in good shape with low miles is going to go for probably twice that (or at least a lot closer to $10k than to $5k).
Henry, my recent sales (and 1 buy) have been using CL. Can be frustrating, but gotta go where the buyers are. Mostly I have sold, so that eliminates the stoners, but you do have to weed out the flakes. But I have gotten pretty good at that.
when shopping, you quickly get a feel for the legit ads, and which ones to totally avoid. Still a crapshoot.
@henryn said:
Case A: You have fairly new car, worth $20k on trade in, or $23k on a private sell. If you figure 6.25% sales tax, then it's worth $20,000 times 1.0625 or $21,250 when you trade it in. Which means you have lost about $1,750 by trading. And you have to weigh that against your time and aggravation trying to sell.
You have to be pretty lucky to achieve those numbers, though. Retail is $3k over, not private party. Private party is more like $2k. Then you figure in the cost to prep it for sale, the advertising fees, if any, and your time and aggravation, as you mentioned, and the profit proposition is almost nonexistent in most cases.

There certainly a lot of flakes and scammers on CL. I can spot many of them. I guess it annoys me as a basically honest person to see the dishonesty of others.

Besides the fact that it is dangerous, you have got to be a complete idiot to pass a school bus with it's lights flashing. In NY State, it is a 6 point moving violation plus a fine. Judges are pretty strict as far as making those stick too.

I saw a news item about a guy who bought a car from CL, a Cadillac Escalade. It was put together from a bunch of cars that had been written off by insurance companies. The investigators said most people would never know the car had been reconstituted. Since the fine tollerances were off and the structure was gone the car was totally unsafe. The scammers find a car that will be destroyed and use that car for a serial number.
I hope I am not in the financial position of having to try to buy a car on CL!.
Question for the experts. My son leased a vw in NJ and has since moved to NY. if he wants to re register it, does that gave to go through a vw dealer, or should get call vw credit? I assume he can't just do at the dmv. Not sure he wants to keep it licensed here fir another 2.5 years, but could be pricey (taxes and fees) to change it over. I assume he would have to change his DL first?

Is your name on any of the paperwork?
When I was in college, my car was registered with my folks in CA, but I secured an AZ driver's license.
I'm sure NY wants any new residents to re-register their car with NY tags within 60-90 days (that's how it is in Colorado), but I'm sure he can wait until the NJ tags expire before he has to do something.
All in his name. Not sure what the insurance company is going to think. Technically he us a contract employee. Can always claim just on a temp assignment?
He should definitely establish residence in NY. The insurance rates in Albany vs. NJ must be cheaper. He has already paid sales tax on the car, so he WILL NOT have to pay it again when he registers it in New York. The NYS DMV actually has a very helpful website. He'll probably have to get the car inspected in NY for emissions & safety.
When I moved to CT from NY, I turned my NY plates in with a year left on the registration and was refunded money.

Murphy, looks like the same car you posted a few weeks ago. At that price, I'd be looking at NEW. Free maintenance, new car smell, Sat radio. The seller doesn't seem to want to admit depreciation happens. And Seattle seems more pricy than Virginia.

Yikes, that could be a can of worms. Leasing in NY is different due to the trial lawyers who run the state. Years ago they started suing the car manufacturers directly for lease car accidents. This lead to the cancellation of all leasing for a time.
While I don't understand the legality of it all, the solution resulted in a a lessee actually BUYING the car up front and agreeing to sell it back at lease end. Was a big mess.
If he plans on going to the local DMV office tell him to skip the Albany location. Snake pit is too kind of a term for it. Have him go to the Clifton Park office. Much nicer people up there.

Since he is a resident of NY state, he has to change his license and registration within a certain time frame. As for registering a leased vehicle in NY, here is a link to the information:
thanks Rob. I was just going to go searching, and you saved me the trouble! A little odd, since it requires a copy of the title which would have to come from the lease holder (VW credit).

quite the hassle.
That's because the vehicle has a NJ title and it has to be converted to a NY title in order to register the car.
Driver that is what I was thinking as well. They seem to be rare in this area. Wife is going to look at it at lunch time. That will determine if we keep dancing or not...
Any thoughts on price? I have an idea of what I would pull the trigger at, but curious what the crowd thinks
That's a nice low mile vehicle. Out of my price range but if I were a SUV guy I might consider it. Little danger of it being raced or beaten. As long as the oil was changed what more would it need?

The 2003 Mustang GT vert ended on ebay. All of our guesses $5,700-$6,500 on the price weren't close. Seems the guy wants $11,500 for it. Are you kidding me? Maybe I should trade in my 2013 GT since his is that high, mine must be well over $50k.
It all ends up being a moot point. Had the wife take a look at the car during lunch, pretty much exactly how she wanted it, color and options. I sent an email around 3:00 PM telling them we loved it and here was our offer...and BAM it had already been sold. The same time my wife was looking at it another salesperson was selling it...Going to tough to find that same color combination in a low miles lease return...
@murphydog said: I sent an email around 3:00 PM telling them we loved it and here was our offer...and BAM it had already been sold.
It seems there is a shortage of good used cars. It sounds like you will have to go with your wife and just go for it if you like it. Surprising they are selling so fast.
My 2004 X3 was bought by my SIL about 7 years ago. It has 150K miles on it and still like new. It has had some repairs but nothing you wouldn't expect in a 10 year old car with slightly high mileage.
At least you have an idea of what you should pay. A 3 year old BMW gets you about 50% to 55% of it's value when you trade it in, so expect to pay at least 10% more than that.
Once again, good luck. Looking for the right one is half the fun.

Actually, I guessed that the price would be in the 10k range, so reasonably close to my guess. Used car prices are insane, they have been since 2008 when new car sales fell off the cliff. With no new cars sold in 2008, '09, '10, etc., there is a corresponding shortage of used cars today, so ... Supply and demand.
My friend just traded in a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado crew cab with 48,000 miles. She paid right at $26k new in February of 2011, and got $23k trading it in 2 weeks ago. She drove the truck for 3.5 years, put 48 thousand miles on it, and got $3k less than what she paid.
henry, maybe you're right and I'm out of touch with used vehicles. My last 6 or 7 vehicles have been new except for an old truck I got off ebay locally. Just that I remember 2001-2004 GTs selling in the 11-12k range 5 years ago. I thought the thrill would be gone by now with the HP improvements in the new ones.
Yep, this just out from "autonews@crainnewsalerts.com"
Take note: there is a squeeze coming to an auto dealer near you. Two important factors to new automotive sales -- low interest rates and relatively high values for used automobiles – are forecast to move in unwelcome directions.
my wife would be unhappy and my daughter might disown me if I brought that baby home. Though if she got the hang of the stick and learned how to do burnouts, she might get over it.
Oh, gimme a break. I just saw a really nice low miles one on a friend's used car lot for $6499
Well great, he can buy it a birthday cake and sing to it once a year in his garage.

There's a big contingency of us on edmunds that only buy new & a group that pretty much solely considers used. Some cars just have unexplainably high resale values and you'll see it on a dealer's lot with an asking price not too far off from its current model year, new counterpart.
Look at prices of a used Honda Fit, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, Toyota 4Runner, Ford Mustang GT...

I've been seeing that for some time now. The answer is quite simple, just check the box for "title" in the search area at the top of the page. This means your search item must be found "in the title" in order to be a match.

Forget German laws, most Americans can't get the hang of their own laws.
In the past two weeks I have had cars pass my school bus full of special needs kids twice on the shoulder as I made right turns. Yesterday I had a woman pass me on the LEFT as I made a left turn and then turn RIGHT.
What mental logic makes these people think doing that is ok?
2019 Kia Soul+, 2015 Mustang GT, 2013 Ford F-150, 2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible
That's brilliant. Why didn't I think of that?
There certainly a lot of flakes and scammers on CL. I can spot many of them. I guess it annoys me as a basically honest person to see the dishonesty of others.
I've sold a few small items on CL over the years with no problems.

@oldfarmer50
Besides the fact that it is dangerous, you have got to be a complete idiot to pass a school bus with it's lights flashing. In NY State, it is a 6 point moving violation plus a fine. Judges are pretty strict as far as making those stick too.
2001 Prelude Type SH, 2022 Highlander XLE AWD, 2023 Toyota Tacoma SR 4WD

Can always claim just on a temp assignment?

hmmm..so the first X3 that we were looking at has sold, however this little beauty is now available http://www.bmwseattle.com/certified/BMW/2012-BMW-X3+xDrive35i-near-seattle-wa-94382c0a0a0a0002331938d40528b4e1.htm
Any thoughts on price? I have an idea of what I would pull the trigger at, but curious what the crowd thinks
@stickguy

Ha ha that's so outrageous it's almost funny. Fortunately, for the kind of cars I would buy off CL it wouldn't be worth it to put together a Frakencar out of parts.
2019 Kia Soul+, 2015 Mustang GT, 2013 Ford F-150, 2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible
Murphy, looks like the same car you posted a few weeks ago. At that price, I'd be looking at NEW. Free maintenance, new car smell, Sat radio. The seller doesn't seem to want to admit depreciation happens. And Seattle seems more pricy than Virginia.
2013 Mustang GT, 2001 GMC Yukon Denali
Yikes, that could be a can of worms. Leasing in NY is different due to the trial lawyers who run the state. Years ago they started suing the car manufacturers directly for lease car accidents. This lead to the cancellation of all leasing for a time.
While I don't understand the legality of it all, the solution resulted in a a lessee actually BUYING the car up front and agreeing to sell it back at lease end. Was a big mess.
I don't know if you could even convert a NJ leased car to a NY registration without some fancy footwork.
Try this site:http://dmv.ny.gov/registration/register-leased-vehicle
Hope I'm wrong.
If he plans on going to the local DMV office tell him to skip the Albany location. Snake pit is too kind of a term for it. Have him go to the Clifton Park office. Much nicer people up there.
2019 Kia Soul+, 2015 Mustang GT, 2013 Ford F-150, 2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible
Since he is a resident of NY state, he has to change his license and registration within a certain time frame. As for registering a leased vehicle in NY, here is a link to the information:
http://dmv.ny.gov/forms/mv821.pdf
thanks Rob. I was just going to go searching, and you saved me the trouble! A little odd, since it requires a copy of the title which would have to come from the lease holder (VW credit).
quite the hassle.
2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.
That's because the vehicle has a NJ title and it has to be converted to a NY title in order to register the car.

It was hard for me to read the website, but, it looks like it has all the options. Personally, I like the light color interior.
I'd double check what the price should be on a proper site, but around $36 would seem reasonable. It will be 3 years old in another month or two.
Good luck, I think you would like this one more than the last one. Consider an extended warranty. Will make for a great car.

Driver that is what I was thinking as well. They seem to be rare in this area. Wife is going to look at it at lunch time. That will determine if we keep dancing or not...
That's a nice low mile vehicle. Out of my price range but if I were a SUV guy I might consider it. Little danger of it being raced or beaten. As long as the oil was changed what more would it need?
How much warranty is left?

The 2003 Mustang GT vert ended on ebay. All of our guesses $5,700-$6,500 on the price weren't close. Seems the guy wants $11,500 for it. Are you kidding me? Maybe I should trade in my 2013 GT since his is that high, mine must be well over $50k.
2013 Mustang GT, 2001 GMC Yukon Denali
It all ends up being a moot point. Had the wife take a look at the car during lunch, pretty much exactly how she wanted it, color and options. I sent an email around 3:00 PM telling them we loved it and here was our offer...and BAM it had already been sold. The same time my wife was looking at it another salesperson was selling it...Going to tough to find that same color combination in a low miles lease return...
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
Do yourself a favor, just buy new.
I saw this Gotta Have It Green 2014 Mustang GT COUPE on my travels through Central PA last week.

Then there was that "cash for clunkers" thing. Unintended (hopefully) consequences and all.
henry, maybe you're right and I'm out of touch with used vehicles.

2013 Mustang GT, 2001 GMC Yukon Denali
That color would take some getting used to.

my wife would be unhappy and my daughter might disown me if I brought that baby home. Though if she got the hang of the stick and learned how to do burnouts, she might get over it.

Oh, gimme a break. I just saw a really nice low miles one on a friend's used car lot for $6499
Well great, he can buy it a birthday cake and sing to it once a year in his garage.
That's definitely NOT the color I'd pick if I were ordering from the factory, but would you take it home for the right price? It's New Year's Eve, the 2015 redesign is off and running. Ford has mega incentives plus 0 financing for 72 months. You've always wanted a V8 Mustang with a stick. Do you go for it?
2001 Prelude Type SH, 2022 Highlander XLE AWD, 2023 Toyota Tacoma SR 4WD
@henryn
2001 Prelude Type SH, 2022 Highlander XLE AWD, 2023 Toyota Tacoma SR 4WD
That's pretty pricey. Is there some unusual demand for almost 12 yo Mustangs? Is the convertible rare for that year? I don't understand.
