I just ordered an SR5 in the desert sand color for $38,800 plus tax, tags & freight. Dealer in Maryland ordered car for me with PM, DR, SR, AH, CQ, AC V2, GN and CF options (MSRP=$42,305) and due to arrive at end of month. I liked this color because it wasn't the silver which is very popular, and is one of the few colors where the fender flare contract is not too pronounced. I can't wait to move up from my 92 Ford Explorer with +175,000 miles. I did treat me well, but I couldnt resist the Toyota this time.

    Correction on MSRP $41,305.

That's $2500 under MSRP, and not invoice.
(sorry -- people at times read only headers!)

I stand corrected. But I got your attention didn't I.

    1) VSC Anyone have any personal feedback on the skid control feature? Any issues or positive (perhaps crash-preventing) experiences? Any negatives? I am concerned that it may be too "over engineered" and have 1st year bugs to work out.

    2) I noticed on a test drive that the Seq. (and it's true on the TLC and similar veh) that if the 4x4 l/h shifter gets moved into Neutral that the Seq will drift whether or not the column shift is in Park. (Some gearheads are saying "no duh" about now.) Perhaps curious teenagers or co-workers who occasionally share the driving should be reminded of this.

I had the skid control alarm go off on me twice, but I certainly wasn't skidding or even close to skidding....guess I just took a curvy road a bit too fast....the first time it happened the loud beeping scared me half to death...I had no idea what was happening and thought, geez this in and of itself could cause an accident....the second time was very brief and it stopped almost as fast as it started. Even though it may be an annoyance, I'm all in favor of every safety feature available and it did make me slow down!

I have written a detailed description of the VSC and 4WD system on this vehicle. It can be read at http://www.tundrasolutions.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=20&t=000004

The Land Cruiser has had this same system since the 2000 model year.

Being a New jersey dealer, I would say that you have gotten a very nice offer. I just hope that the offer still stands and the car is still available when you go back in to make the deal.

IMHO, Toyota was attempting to mimic the Eddie Bauer look on Explorers, Expeditions and Excursions, but it seems like they never bothered to see how ugly the color they chose for the fenders looked next to the body colors. Oh well, better luck next time (in a year or two).
  • rickc5rickc5 Member Posts: 378
Too bad there's not a box you can check that would delete all the computerized "driving aids" and allow the competent drivers to determine what to do (e.g. like during a skid) by themselves. It seems Toyota has decided that they know what's best for us, just like our esteemed government.

Of course, having all that stuff might allow them to defend themselves better in court ("We designed in every safety device we could think of. Its not our fault the truck crashed").

Maybe I'm missing something though. Do you suppose its possible that the Seq becomes uncontrollable WITHOUT the computer assists???? Hmmmm, I'll have to ponder that one.

I think I am about to purchase a Sequoia Limited tomorrow. I just need one more comparison test drive in the Eddie Bauer Ford Expedition, and I think I will still favor the Sequoia, mostly for braking and acceleration and cargo...(and I LOVE that back power window!) My concern is, however, that the Expedition has a more cushy, smooth ride. (I need the ride to be smooth because of a previous back injury). What I am wondering is, if I have different tires put on a Sequoia will it affect the ride enough to feel it? Perhaps more tread, wider tread, or even 17" tires possible? I really don't know anything about tires so any info would be helpful.
    Thanks.

Has anyone ever had a television installed in a Sequoia? I am debating about this, but the built in price is very high, and it would be after market. I don't know if it is worth the hassle and expense when I could just get the portable kind that hangs between the front seats. Any experience with this out there?
  • siasconsetsiasconset Member Posts: 14
Yes rick you ponder. While the rest of us ponder what forces have effected your life to make you so bitter and twisted you swipe at the government Toyota and other drivers you have judged as incompetent.
There was another person who shared your views that the driver alone should be in total control and not rely on assistance from the vehicle or other safety equipment. Why don't you go have a chat with him and see if his views have changed. His name was Dale Earnhardt.
Several years ago there were two driver deaths during a Formula One weekend. The governing body the FIA investigated the circumstances of the deaths and made significant rules changes to protect the drivers. Since those changes there have been no driver deaths in F1.
Toyota and the FIA have acted in like manners. Their decisions were made to prevent injury and protect life.

rick you got to be kidding yourself if you think Toyota has made a decsion based on they know whats best for all drivers. Its simple economic and market conditions that motiviate any manufacturer to add or remove options. This was a selling feature. The main reason to have in all of the Seq. was made to differentiate them from competing players.
As good a driver as you claim if you've ever driven over black ice VSC is a nice to know its there for you.

I was so thrilled to see a possible fix for the tapping noise from the engine of my brand new 4WD Toyota Sequoia LTD...When I told my mechanic (who is NOT a Toyota guy) his concern with insulationg the wiring harness was that it would likely cause overheating...any thoughts?

I preferenced a Sequoia and should have it in a few weeks. I worked with Bob Strzelecki at Dayton Toyota on Route 130 in Dayton New Jersey. 732 329 9191. Over the last five years friends and family members have purchased many vehicles from them. We have always been treated in a pleasant and professional manner. Anyone who is looking for good dealership to work with in NJ please give them a call.

I have been reading this board and others for a while now, but I've never posted before. I have found the information shared here to be very useful in determining price and options for my new truck. I selected a Sequoia SR5 in silver sky with AC, AH, SR, I'm too excited to remember all the abbreviations. It has a sunroof, alloy wheel package, dual ac/heat, daytime running lights, convenience package, and cargo mat set. I'm sure I've forgotten to mention something, but I'll correct later when I calm down some. I could not get the PM package around here without waiting months, so we are having leather installed aftermarket. The dealership is handling this for us, they deal with a company that gets the same leather Toyota's factory does, so it will look the same. It will be done and delivered Thursday! If anyone is interested, we bought it in Toledo, Ohio for 38K including the leather installation. We live in Michigan, so we still have to pay taxes when we tag it, but the total will be 40,368. Again, thanks for all the help and information I've gained here.
  • drc526drc526 Member Posts: 3
It is a 4 wheel drive too. We might have been able to do a little better by waiting, but we are about to move and we needed it now. I called dealerships as far away as 4 hours and this was the best price for everything I wanted. Beware of LaFontaine Toyota in Dearborn, Michigan, they tried to sell me a loaded SR5 4x4 with 2500 miles on it for 43K! They must have thought I was a stupid little girl who hadn't done her homework!

He all.... it is good to be back. I bought a VW Passat GLX in 1998 when they were just coming out and I found this forum great for sharing info. I have been trying to read the past posts.... could someone summarize any true negative aspects of the Sequoia that new owners have experienced? Also, I have a quote for an SR5 4X4 with IQ, A, AC and CF packages.....Basically the convenience package with alloy package, dual AC, and floor mats. The quote is for $33,500. About $500 over invoice. Are there holdbacks that I could use to negociate as well?

Thanks for all the input from the past.

    Regards,

    Zinny

I can't say for certain, but he was told by Toyota that no dealerships are getting these Sequoias for less than 2% under invoice. Make sure you negotiate that in, sounds like you've found a good dealer. I just bought mine yesterday and it won't be delivered till Thursday. I have read some posts where some people are experiencing vibration at speeds over 45mph, so test it out on the expressway if you can. Best of luck to you!
  • curious54curious54 Member Posts: 47
Hey...I was looking at the quote and its the greatest deal...I too am looking for a Seq. with exactly the same options as you...so can you please tell me where you made the deal...(city and state, and name of dealer)..I would appreciate it..thanks

I live and work in Fairfield county CT, and am looking for a Quality dealing willing to sell a Sequoia for at least $2,500 under MSRP. By they way, for those of you recently purchasing Sequoia's have you been able to negotiate up from Invoice, or simply down from MSRP?

    Any advise?
  • kln2kln2 Member Posts: 2
I would bet that the height difference between the Limited and the SR5 is because the roof rack on the limited is standard.
  • jimxojimxo Member Posts: 423
Recently I was on the Nissan Pathfinder boards and folks were driving to Canada and saving thousands on Pathfinder or Infiniti QX4. I was wondering if any Seq stories are out there, perhaps from our friends up North.
  • rhanson3rhanson3 Member Posts: 69
Toyota dealers, Chev dealers and specialty dealers are all buying Sequoia's from Canada in Seattle. The Bellevue Toyota dealership has 4 Canadian limited Sequoia's on his lot. I was told they buy at Invoice, at the start they were selling at Msrp now the fully loaded Ltd's are 42,500 to 43k. Go into Autotrader.com key in a seattle zip code 98059 and you will see many sequoia's. Try calling platinum auto brokers in bellevue, they would probably tell you the tricks, they are listed in auto trader. good luck

ZINNY2...You got the best deal I have seen so far except for maybe Tuscaloosa. Where are you geographically? Can you post the information at Tundra solutions also?
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
Beware of these things. Because of the exchange rate between the two currencies, dealers can sell you a Canadian Sequoia for a good bit less than a US one but there are some things to keep in mind. First, they are titled units which means you are financing a used car at used car rates. Some banks don't penalize you for buying a current model year used car on the rate, but most do.

Next, you have a warranty issue. If the dealership does things correctly, this will not be a problem. The dealer has to enter the VIN into the TDN system. If they don't, you will have extreme problems getting warranty work done.

The biggest problem is the odometer. Before they come into this country, the odometer/speedometer head must be replaced to reflect miles rather than kilometers. If you ever resell the Sequoia, you must sign a statement certifying the miles are true and unaltered. There is an outstanding legal question as to whether you can sign this without exposing yourself to future litigation. This is not a settled issue and my never become a problem, but the potential exists for you personally to be held liable for selling a "TMU" (true mileage unknown) vehicle.

Be careful out there folks. The best price is not always the best deal. Some of the prices I am hearing about here raise some eyebrows. In the Central Atlantic Region, a good deal on an SR5 is $2000 off the MSRP. A good deal on a Limited is one you can get in less than 2 weeks. If you can get $1000 off the MSRP, you did well. There is a regional shortage of 4x4 Limiteds and I don't see this changing any time soon.

One last thing here. There was a person who posted a few days ago about one in MD for $2500 off the MSRP. He then said he was paying tax, tags and freight in addition to the price. This means he actually paid $2020 off the MSRP because of the "freight bump" which is pretty common in the Washington DC area.

I have done some research and decided that if I want to buy a sequoia I will go to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the 500.00 dollars over invoice promotion. Just a plane ticket on Southwest and 700 miles back to chicago in a new Seq seems like fun. All thats involved to buy from Canada is not convenient. In Alabama I can get TMCC Financing and pay the sales tax when I return to Illinois.

I would like to know what folks are getting gas mileage-wise on 4X4 Seq.'s. On the highway and off. Thanks!

Hi all. I was wondering if anyone here could tell me if this SUV comes in red? I would be interested in the 2wd. I am in California and have yet to see any in anything but White Limiteds or else the tan two tone one. Looked up colors on here but it is hard to tell what they are the "red" actually looks burgundy. Our local dealer does not have any brochures. I am in love with the laser red on the Eddie Bauer Expedition. So anyone seen one in red?

RRuck1 - & anyone else in the southern NE (MA/RI/CT) region,

After 4 months of due diligence, we're ready to start talking price with area Toyota dealers. We're starting via internet & are willing to travel a reasonable distance if the price is right.

We've heard about some decent dealers (e.g. Chambers, Attleboro Toyota). Any others? Any recommendations/warnings on which dealers to avoid?

    Thanks to all in advance.

Don't fall for the dealer crap they offer you!
That new Sequoia is a dream SUV to you but it's just another UNIT to the dealer....and he wants to move it before his competition sells it to you.

THINK PEOPLE. You have the MONEY! You have the upper hand, regardless of the stories they feed you.

I know. I had 4 dealers competing for my business for a new Sequoia for thousands UNDER MSRP!

And I'm now driving this beautiful UNIT. CHEAP.

    Any questions?

My dealership in Daytona Beach is selling several Canadian Sequoias. Most are LTD 4x4 for $46,000, loaded. The salesperson disclosed that they have been titled and that the odomoters/speedomoters were replaced with U.S. units. I imagine that if you buy one they disclose that in writing. I will definitely hold out for a U.S. version. Thanks cliffy1.

Why YES! I believe I want to be a person
who THINKS! Thank you SO much for your sage advice!

Why don't you scan in a GIF of your purchase order
and show us non-thinking beasts how a man of your superior intellectual capabilities does it.

While you're at it, why don't you scan in the purchase order from your supposed Benz (from your profile).

    cheers

Thanks for the info on a FL dealership selling the Canadian Sequoias. That may actually explain a few things I have been seeing lately. One dealership in AL has been advertising $500 over and that just does not make a bit of sense to me. It is so far below market conditions in the rest of the country to make me suspicious. If it turns out they are doing this on Canadian cars, that would explain everything.

Good luck on the Sequoia-quest. Keep us updated on how the shopping goes.

not accusing anyone in particular, but I must say that there has suddenly being a glut of posts that are simply 'moronic'.... geez... what is going on here on this board these days ? whatever happened to all the intelligent posts (and posters) ? This forum is being hijacked by all kinds of newbies who, instead of reading through the posts, simply waste bandwidth asking same monotonous and endless questions... it is irritating, to say the least.

Please if you are new to this board, avail yourself the time to read through *some* of the posts, and you'll most probably find the answer to your question BEFORE you post...

Does anyone know the pros and cons of switching to synthetic motor oil for the Sequ? My local mechanic recommends it as does the oil change shops. Anyone do it?
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
I've never heard anything bad about it. If I didn't lease my Tundra, I'd do it to that. As it is, I wont own it long enough to worry about extending engine life.
  • rhanson3rhanson3 Member Posts: 69
I called tuscaloosa and they told me they did not sell Canadian cars.
Scottphillip the 46k price for a Canadian car is very high, what do they get for the US version?
Like I said, in Seattle the Canidian units are about 2k less than the US units and going for 42k
  • clkcabrio4saleclkcabrio4sale Member Posts: 4
Whoa.....did I say something wrong thirdsuv?

Was not meant to sound as it did actually. Sorry to offend. My point is that these vehicles can be bought for less. Period.

1dog: I bought in Florida. Sequoia 2wd Limited with many options including:

    JBL premium 3-in-1 combo 6disc CD w/10spkrs.
    Side air curtains
    Rear spoiler
    Moonroof w/tilt/slide
    Bug deflector
    Sunroof wind deflector
    wheel locks
    cargo net
    carpets/trunk mat
    white letter Michelin pkg.
    24k gold plated emblems
    Toyo guard protection W/undercoating etc.

    Price was 43,590.73 plus dlr. add'l profit of 2500. plus 6% + 50.00 tax.
    Also tag/reg. transfer fee 233.
    Delivery/document fees 325.
    Dlr. prep 399.
    Battery/tire fee 6.50
    filing fee 16.00

Anyway, these are the figures on the original order form.
After the deal was completed the order form was slightly altered to reflect new pricing.

I paid 42k for this vehicle, including tax.
Yes, 42,000.00 even was my drive-out price.
I might add that this dealer was not honest and tried to screw me before the deal was done. Naturally he wanted to charge me more but I had a legal signed purchase order he could not get around but he tried. Not proper to get into all the details here.

Now concerning my Benz. I paid very close to MSRP.
In fact, I paid MSRP and paid dealer cost for all options. Very little discount and a 2 year wait. But a nice car.
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
Your posts just seem to be overly combative. Members of this forum are not idiots and your "Wake up people" seemed to indicate your precieved superiority. You got a good deal on your Sequoia, but nothing out of the ordinary. They are sold all the time for $2000 to $3000 over invoice depending on the demand and equipment in different regions. Relax a bit and you'll learn something here.
  • dforrdforr Member Posts: 55
In reading this forum for 6 weeks plus now, you got an average deal, but you did get a truck. The tacked on fees, oh boy, just mark them up as profit. Some fees are aometimes reasonable, others just padding for discount purposes. Up here, the legit fees seem to be for regional advertising (about 1.5% on average) and documentation prep. fees of $99 to $199. No fees for dealer prep around here (CT). Any posts from others on fees that they have encountered in the final analysis?
  • clkcabrio4saleclkcabrio4sale Member Posts: 4
If you calculate the price of a 2WD Limited I feel you will find that 42k is a very good price.
That means I paid 39k plus tax. That means over 4k in options that were included at no charge as one way to look at it. Now that is completely out of the ordinary considering the options, the scarcity etc.

Now my point is not how good a deal I got but how good a deal is possible regardless of the dealer hype. And so far as members of this forum not being idiots, I agree. And I apologize.

Rather than defending myself from now on, is there anybody here that I might help? That's my purpose of posting here- to see if I can help with my purchase experience.
