    I'll throw my ante into that. The front end is definitely '49, but the side trim is different from a regular Roadmaster.

    what is the difference between the Riviera and Roadmaster? I've found pics on the interwebs for both that look the same to me.

    The 49 Riviera had the Sweep Spear side trim which extended forward to a position over the front wheel. The 49 Roadmaster's side trim ended behind the front wheel.

    Yup that was a 1949 Buick Roadmaster Riviera. I was under the impression that the
    "Riviera" name during that era denoted a pillarless hardtop (a new thing in the late 40s-early 50s). Here's a '51 Special Riviera which has the aforementioned Sweep Spear as well as the pillarless h/t.

    No,that's PERFECT for it. It wasn't a top of the line car. It was just a Series 62, which is a base model 61 with a few trim pieces. The Series 60 and 75 Fleetwoods are the ones you might want to decorate like a birthday cake.

    If you say so but where I grew up (NYC area) seeing any Caddy without full wheel covers and whitewalls would have been like seeing a woman in public without her "foundation garments". It just wasn't done. B)

    Well you're right about that. I guess I was viewing that car from a more modern perspective of how collectors like 'em, rather than how people viewed them back in the day. I mean, Jaguars XK140s and Mercedes 300SL roadsters came with whitewalls in the 1950s and most collectors do not prefer that look today.

    Here's a picture of the Park Avenue NY showroom that Frank Lloyd Wright designed for Max Hoffman who pioneered the importation of many European makes.



    The cars in the pic are easy to identify but there's a tiny script on the fender of the Porsche coupe. Do you know what it says?

    I wonder why more auto dealers haven't built dramatic showcases like that one.

    It's a difficult decision as to whether the car is a 50 or 51 but since Lois Lane is mentioned with the photo and the Superman TV series began filming in 51 and cars were provided by Nash for the series, I went with 51. If we could see the model number we would know. The first two digits were the year of the car.
    Back in the 60s I had a 51 Nash wagon which I didn't keep very long because of its continuous head gasket problems.

    Yep, she's out covering some story and the fault swallows her and the car (due to an earthqake caused by Lex Luthor and his dreams of a new California, with Costa Del Lex and Otisburg), then Superman spins the Earth backwards and undoes the tragedy. A 1971-ish rental car in 1978, that doesn't sound fun.

    I think it's a '71 Ford. IIRC, the grille features on the '72 were a bit bolder. And yeah, a 6-7 year old rental car, especially from that era, does NOT sound like a confidence-builder! I wonder if Rent-A-Wreck was around back then?

    For some reason, I'm also getting a mental picture of a '74-75 big C-body Dodge Monaco/Gran Fury being used, as well. Maybe that was the second Superman movie?
