I encountered an odd issue today. I was performing an Encore(second delivery) for a couple who like and use the profile feature that allows each key to memorize the seat/wheel position, HVAC settings, and radio/memory button presets. The husband's profile was receiving SiriusXM but on the wife's profile SiriusXM was not activated. I sent a refresh signal to the radio and that fixed things but I've never seen that happen before.

What have we come to when we are so lazy that we have to have special devices to adjust seats and tune radios let alone have to have an expert adjust things for you?

That is exactly the way I feel. My Genny has a switch for seat/mirror adjustment for 2 drivers. Nothing else. Even that is wasted feature for me because Mrs. j will NEVER drive the car. I base that on the '09 Genny. She NEVER once even started that car.

Needing the radio tuned for a particular driver and HVAC settings is beyond needing help. If you need help with anything after your buns hit the drivers seat, why not just hire someone to chaeuffer you around. I'd be ashamed to let anyone know I couldn't move my fingers to activate a feature.

As I have said before, my Genny has features I will never use. Talking to it to make things happen is at the very top of my "do not touch features list".

    I just don't get it.

Well, then let others enjoy their cool tech features. Just because you don't care for them doesn't mean those who do are lame or don't enjoy driving.

It is a beautiful small college town, although the 'small' part sometimes frustrates our daughter. :)

To me, when you see a movie or TV show about a college town, it looks like Oxford (where Miami is located).

A friend and longtime coworker, now retired, graduated there in 1969. He talked about when the Lemon Pipers were students there--they had the #1 hit, "Green Tambourine", which is still heard on oldies radio.

Yeah...they were gone by the time I got there. But, I heard stories about them forming and playing around the area.

My parents used to say that Oxford, OH was too small for me to get into any trouble. Little did they know. Truth told, there isn't a whole lot to do but study, as there isn't much around Oxford except for Miami.

Known as the Cradle of Coaches. Guys like Woody Hayes, Paul Brown, Bo Schembeckler....and many others got their coaching start at Miami.

Actually, Miami is also known as the Ivy League School of the Mid-West. As you say, beautiful, Norman Rockwell-esk type campus. Got a great education there, both academically and personally.
I visited the Miami campus just as the leaves were turning in the fall of '81. It was post card picture perfect.

Fortunately, I can still move my features appendages.

I remember when people thought power windows weren't a necessity....what, your too lazy to roll down a window. But, once you get used to something it is hard to give it up.

Another one is remote control devices, remember the old Jerrolds with a wire running to your TV. I think you slid the channel finder. I used to think who is so lazy they can't get out of their chair and change the channels on their tv set once an hour? You know where that thinking went. Things we think are toys today can be the things we will take for granted in the future.

oldfarmer, I tend to agree we are at the stage where we may have to many convenience features.

But, the key fob telling the car weather it is me who opened the door or my wife's key opening the door is a nice feature. If she opens the door the seats, outside mirrors adjust for her. If I do it they are right for me.

    Necessary.....not really. Convenient, definitely.

Unless you loan your car to someone else.

When I got the XT5 loaner a couple of months ago I got in, put on my seatbelt, started the engine, and the car tried to kill me by moving the seat way forward while simultaneously putting the outside mirrors in a useless position. Memory was set for someone really tiny.

Memory setting functions like that really ought to be an option because they are only useful for multi-driver families. I suspect (but do not know) that most vehicles are typically driven by only one driver on a regular basis. But all buyers of vehicles with memory functions standard pay for it and likely most don't use them.

That happened to me once when I went to pick up a new car! I opened the door and got in, and my knees suddenly drove forward into the steering column! I guess the person who checked it over was REALLY short.

There are things that are okay to do on a smartphone, and things that really make sense on a smartphone (waze and google maps come to mind). And then there are things that I just DON'T do on a smartphone. Reading and posting to these forums is one of the latter.

Also falling into the latter category are watching movies. People really watch movies on a smartphone? Seriously?

I have been, not much difference in detail watching a decent sized smartphone from 18 inches away than a 55 inch big screen from 25 feet away.

Works well when I am at my tax job and there is nothing to do.

It is, with an alternator the car is run off the battery which gives a constant flow of energy and the alternator recharges the battery. With a Generator the car is powered by the generator which can vary the power output depending on engine speed.

If they lose the case, and don't get the fine reduced, then I'll be stressed! On the bright side, I haven't received any new pending citations (knock on wood!).

Well just keep it slow you'll live longer (before responding think about that and what you said that I am responding to).
Errrr.... the pending ticket isn't for speeding. Bad assumption. I rail against speeding tickets for purposes more benevolent than my own self-interests.

This one is a red light with a seemingly short yellow. I have been less reluctant to slam the brakes when the timing is bad on yellow lights, but I hate having to slam the brakes, but I may hate paying the fine even more.
My comment was more of a Zen like statement than a safety advocate standpoint. If you don't get the tickets they you don't get the stress, if you don't get the stress you live longer.

Your LONG explanation could have just said, "more output for a given size". ;)

And everyone knows that a cars alternator is a 3 phase electrical thingy.

@driver100 is going to have a ball looking this up. :o

    jmonroe
I can't look it up now....my wife has scheduled me going out for dinner. But, I will look it up, if I was to guess I'd say an alternator is more efficient and produces more electricity faster..

JM, I should have been your life coach...I could have added 5 years to your useable lifetime, making briefer posts, heating bagels for less time, waxing your car less often.

Hey me and the wife are over 55 and we were just in Florida, we ate many times past 5PM, one time as late as 5:10PM.

But seriously when I was a kid my family went to Northern Indiana for a vacation (yeah big time vacation going from Chicago to IN) and we went to eat at IIRC 7PM or so. The restaurant owner looked at us and said in no uncertain terms "Decent people have all eaten by now".

The talk about first car you had with AC reminded me of the last car we had without AC. It was an 86 Sentra, and in 1988 we were expecting daughter #1 and had the hottest summer EVER. The wife spent a LOT of time in the basement, and from her tone of voice, I understood at a very primal level that every car from then on was going to HAVE AC in it. )

My last car without A/C was a 1981 Mustang. One hot day in 1985 after I got back home my mother asked me why I bought a car without A/C. My response was always "Because I bought it in Alaska".

JM, to drive a car near or far distances, no one really NEEDS all the technology features offered in today's new vehicles.  I sure don't NEED gesture control to raise the volume on my audio system or to answer a Bluetooth phone call.  I don't NEED a car that steers itself.  I don't NEED adaptive cruise control that keeps my speed the same as the car in front of me or automatically brakes to avoid a collision.  I don't NEED an audio system that rivals sitting in Lincoln Center listening to the New York Philharmonic playing Gershwin's "Rhapsody In Blue"!  I don't NEED blind spot monitors that warn me of a car on my left or right and will even adapt to an impending collision as an avoidance reaction.  I don't NEED a ton of other safety and luxury features that are part and parcel of the car I drive.  It's a matter of CHOICE as to what I LIKE to have.

As to whether or not I NEED HELP with other parts of my life, I wouldn't mind a little - it sure isn't easy living alone or being in pain or going grocery shopping.  But I haven't had much enjoyment out of life these past 10-15 years and it's nice to at least have some enjoyment when I get into my car and have a myriad of ENJOYABLE features that make my driving easier, safer and more relaxing.  Maybe it's even an escapism for me - I don't know.

But I appreciate and respect your opinion regarding what you want or don't want in your car when you drive.  All I ask is that you respect what other people want or don't want in their cars - and what I want or don't want in the cars that I drive.   ;)

Honestly, I am not so stupid (maybe stubborn) to know todays generation likes to play with their car. They play with their phones to the point they can't put them down so why not play with their cars. It is the evolution of things but I can't be THAT lazy.

As for power windows I have them, who doesn't, and I wouldn't want to be without them OR power seats. I even had them on my first new car, a '66 Bonneville, and was wondering when they would quit. I told the dealer to order a car just like the one we were dealing on but no power windows. He said he would give them to me at his cost because he didn't want to order a car. IIRC, my price was around $60 not the window option price of, I think, $104. Like I said I was waiting for them to quit but the only problem I had with them, although I only had the car for 2 years, was the right rear window came of the track and wouldn't go back up until I used a couple of thin sticks to wiggle the track back in place.

Some options are worth it to me but not the one where the radio preset comes on when the seats goes into my driving position.

A little story here and you might tune out but here goes:

Just today Son #1 brought his youngest son over to visit on the way back from his hockey game in the Burgh. Grandson #4 saw a yoyo in the family room and started to play with it. Almost got it to go up and down. I took if from him and showed him some of the tricks I learned when I was his age. He has seen me do this several times over the years and was impressed again. He said, "how did you learn how to do those tricks"? I told him when I was his age I didn't walk around with a "device" in my hands all day. But I admitted that if they had them when I was a kid I would have probably played with them too. To my surprise he said, "you had more fun when you were a kid". Now, does that mean he will not play with his "device" anymore? I'm not that dumb to think his world will change because he played with a yoyo today but I liked the way I grew up better.

I think the other thing about all the electronic gizmos we have today really add to the WOW factor in todays cars......and electronics are so cheap to produce. I was surprised at the content in our $23000 Passat, digital speedometer, cruise control, picture of the door you didn't close properly, a radio that is part of a media center, all kinds of lights built into the doors and in the roof liner. I mean the car is a minimal economy car and you get all these gadgets and it makes it seem like the car is a lot more car than it is....and it is so cheap to produce these electronic toys.

I am looking forward to getting the new E400 one day, and that glass panel that goes across 3/4s of the instrument panel....with digital gauges that can be changed into 3 different styles. Do I need it, does anybody need it? Of course not, but, I still want to play with it.

While most rentals don't have the "gee whiz" features discussed here, even the simple stuff like the climate control and entertainment systems work in entirely different ways from one vehicle to another. Some are intuitive, most are not, at least in my experience.

I used to seek out Impalas because I didn't have to relearn every thing every time. There's nothing like trying to figure stuff out in the dark after a 9-hour day of travel. That doesn't work anymore because this year's Impala (or Malibu) probably has nothing in common with last year's.

the compact CUV segment is the most happening one I believe. Good for buyers when the competition gets cutthroat. I find a lot to like about them. Short, but quite roomy and comfortable. Good flexibility for carrying stuff when needed. Don't ride with your butt on the pavement having to clamber in and out. As long as they drive nicely, about the perfect "do it all" car.

    Plus, I really like hatchbacks!

My van has roll down windows. I don't mind.

Getting up to change channels went out when the number of channels exceed 25.
Actually, the C250 is pretty Spartan. No GPS, blind spot warning, media center. But it is refreshingly simple to drive. It does have PWs though, and I like them especially if you need to talk to someone outside the car on the passengers side....like when asking for directions - hard to do with a console and roll down windows :s

I never thought of how valuable a remote control is when we have more than the original 13 channels, or even 25. Can you imagine turning the knob to get 1100 channels......it will be as large as the living room? :s

All I ask is that you respect what other people want or don't want in their cars - and what I want or don't want in the cars that I drive.   ;)

Maybe I should have said a normal able bodied younger generation person should not NEED that much help with their car. What they NEED is help for the part that sits above the shoulders.

It seems you like gadgets but we all know about the part above your shoulders so you are excused. :D

tech (or "gadgets") certainly suffers from serious scope creep. And of course, everyone has their own opinion on how much is just enough! The best option though is IMO being able to turn it off (out of sight, out of mind). At least if you have them, can use them if desired.

But yeah, there are some that seem to be getting into the doing it because they can territory.

If it's out there may as well take advantage of it!

Even my fairly basic 2017 Elantra has features that even luxury makes didn't have ten years ago.  It's the way of the future and there is no turning back.

Another stom of the century has hit!

It's started snowing again and the forecast is for 6-10". Of course all the usual suspects flooded the supermarket this morning (our normal shopping time) for a mad frenzy. You would think we lived in Alaska and would be snowed in for weeks. Noticed many men shopping today. Wives must have played on hubby's ego to get him to battle with nature. They looked like lost lambs wandering about the store.

To keep this car related we were driving the PT with no ABS, no traction/stability control, no AWD and regular all season tires. No problem.

All the automatic nannies such as ABS and traction control dumbs down the need to learn proper driving skills and to proactively adjust to weather conditions. They also allow oblivious drivers to drive too fast..and next they've without knowing why, spun out and are in the weeds or worse.

After the first snow fall of the year you usually see more 4 wheel drive SUVs in the ditch than anything else. People think because they have 4WD and a big SUV they can go at any speed and they will never skid off the road.

Cincinnati Auto Show.....as Walt pointed out, Mercedes wasn't there. They were conspicuous by their absence.

    Lots of trucks.

I focused on just a few vehicles, giving them more than a cursory look.

-Volvo-surprise for me. V90 wagon. As always, Volvo makes some of the best automotive seats in the industry. The whole package is impressive. Interior was gorgeous. If you don't tow, but need that kind of room, the V90 would be at the very top of my shopping list.

-BMW-they had a 5 series with a rail around it so you couldn't look inside or sit in it. Not quite sure what that's all about given they're already at the dealerships. I guess it looked fine, from 6 feet away. No 3 series (their bread and butter) that I could see, nor a 2 series. As Walt mentioned, they had a goodly amount of electric cars represented. They had a 7 series at the very back of the display kind of sitting their lonesome. I sort of felt like "he people, nothing to see here, move on", which is too bad.

-Jag....still smitten with the XE/XF. Pretty cars, and I believe they're fairly priced. I know @laurasdada is a fan, as is my sister. But, not sure I want to jump into that end of the pool with the reliability history of Jag in this country. Some beautiful cars, though.

-Lexus-the IS350 F Sport is quite nice. Still feels cramped to me, though. Surprise of the booth was how much I liked the RX350 F-Sport. I don't know if I was in a Wagon mood or something else is pulling me towards it and the Volvo. But, the RX was comfy, very nicely finished, and it's a Lexus with that sort of reliability and service that I wished I could have. GS350 F Sport was nice, too. Given a choice, for a little less money, I'd probably swing towards the RX because of more utility that you'd get.

-Ford...only thing that interested me was the '18 Mustang. Better in person than the pics I saw. But, it was fenced in, so no touchy-feely. That said, they had a triple black '17 GT on the floor. I would have proposed to it if the state would allow a marriage between man and car. It just "oozed" performance. MSRP was reasonable, too ($41K). That's a whole lot of car for that money.

-Speaking of performance.....Dodge Challenger Scat Pack, although a little long in the tooth, would be a car I could really love. It's still contemporary, regardless of its now several year old iteration. It's big , brash and so totally un-PC, so what's not to like?

-Honda...honestly, I still haven't really changed my mind about the Accord Touring. It really does have it all....quick, all the features any car could possibly have, regardless of price, comfortable, well put together, and priced well under what you'd think. I know I keep saying the Acura TLX scares me, but I'll drive one to see if the transmission issue has been addressed. Again, for that type of money ($45K), I don't know if you could find another car with all the features, handling, performance you'd get in the SH AWD Advance. Plus, if the transmission issues are sorted, you are in for a reliable vehicle, too. They had a really pretty red one sitting on the show floor, too. Quite nice. They had an RL there. I don't know if you can even find one of those to buy, even though you might want one.

-Infiniti...wasn't really sure I'd like the Q50, but they had a Red Sport 400 that I liked. But, I think that one came with the steering system I didn't like. If I could find one with the hydraulic steering that I've heard is still available, I'd be interested.

The rest I just browsed. Couple of casual observations.....I can see why people like Subarus. They had a Wagon 3.6 that was quite nice. Their commecials must be working, as their vehicles were all being fawned over while I was there. Cadillac was at the very front. Lots of interest. I wanted to grab bull horn and yell "Caveat Emptor" to all of them. But, I'm a demure person.

VW....I went looking for a Golf R, but coudn't find one. Regardless of "diesel gate", people were flocking to their vehicles.

Mazda deserves better % of the car market. They continue to bring out products that are as nice, and as competitive as any out there.

Was there for two hours, and probably could have spent another hour there, but it was too crowded and I was hungry.

I'm not sure about competitive. I shopped the Mazda 3 pretty hard and both price and lease terms were not competitive with the Volt.
