We were at 92% here. It got dim, shadows looked funny, felt a little cold. Pretty cool. Pic taken with my phone through a solar viewer card:

The Mrs. and I just saw the total eclipse of the sun in Kansas City. We drove north into the city and stopped and parked in Country Club Plaza. Kinda cool - the Mrs. and I took turns looking up at the sun through the "safe" eclipse shielders. Things got eerily dark. Those glasses really block out the sun...you barely see the blocked sun through them. But I wouldn't want the alternative!

Thanks, that is the only view I had of the eclipse today. I chipped a tooth and was in the dentists chair while it was going on. There was a window, but, it didn't get dark.

One of our tennis guys went to Nashville to see it. That is dedication.
We were on a cruise ship headed to Alaska. We went up on the top deck to watch the eclipse just as a huge fog bank settled in! We saw NOTHING! It did get just a bit darker for a couple of minutes, that's all!

Thanks, carnaught.  The bandages come off Friday.  I just leave it open to the air, I guess.  I will call the surgeon's office to verify that.  It just doesn't sound right - leaving the open wound uncovered.

Next Friday will be the 16th week I've been on the anti-viral pills for Hep C.  I have to have blood tests done the following week to check if the Hep C virus is undetectable.

Then I still need to see an orthopedic doc regarding my right knee - remember I fell a few weeks ago and tore something in in the knee which is probably cartilage and ligaments,  Never a dull moment in my life!   :D

You'lll probably get a thank you card from your local branch of the AMA for all your business this year.

As for the arm, I always found the second day after surgery is the most uncomfortable. Hoping you get through that without too much trouble.

So does the ford drive to your door, or do you have to walk out to the road to retrieve it? Probably a deal breaker for most people that get pizza delivered.

Should use drones instead. Probably a lot cheaper to implement.

It's bad enough to have drones hovering overhead at car shows now. Now we'll have them buzzing around our neighborhoods delivering food. Give me the guy with the Civic with the fartcan muffler instead.

There is very little originality in car design, these days. The Regal was designed in Europe, so it makes sense that some elements were, ahem, 'borrowed' from other makes.

This isn't really new - we can look at Japanese mid-sized sedans from the 90's and see a lot of similarities between them.

I do believe the gap is closing between "mainstream" brands and "premium" brands. Honda, in particular, has made it hard for folks to trade up to the TLX from the Accord. The only big differences is that the TLX still has a V6 (the 2018 Accord does not), and the TLX can be had with AWD. Are those two features worth $7-10K? I suspect that for a lot of car shopping folks - those that are still looking at sedans, that is - the answer is a resounding "no".

Some car mfgs have a lot of agnst because of trying so hard not to compete with themselves.

I say one thing - C&D has a specific type of preference - a driver-oriented car, as they understand it. For years GM and Ford simply refused to design their vehicles in that way, Buick would be on the opposite side of that preference. It's not that it's worse, it's just not C&D's "type". Now Buick is trying to get into that kind of audience so it is met with a bit of skepticism and perhaps some snickering here and there. That's because of the track record. However, the suggestion is, if Buick delivers on what they like, they'll say good things about it. If not, they'll poo poo it as a fake.

They don't mention that the Accord is based on the Civic platform. I believe I read that earlier. I may be wrong. LOL

Now I can accept that logic. I know the two articles are completely different in tone: one's like Saturday Night Live, in my opinion.

I will have to find their Camry, update for 2018, and see how it's written.

I expect facts that a science, math, engineering person can gather from articles like this. But the Regal article didn't meet that goal well and contained lots of opinion comments. Maybe I should look up the 2018 Malibu article from C&D. No. Maybe I shouldn't. I might give me heartburn. LOL

I'm shocked that you would think car magazines are biased. Next thing you know you will be thinking that the mainstreet media is also biased ! ;)

Congratulations on the new position! Back to WA you go, then. When do you start?

I'm probably going to start on October 2nd. I can choose September 18th if I want, but I don't have a rental house yet. We need to find a rental house that will accept two dogs and two cats. I have just applied for a 3BD, 2BA house in Entiat that's only $1,200 a month. To me, that's expensive. The owner says he has other app.'s in but wants a person with the "right fit" he'll award the house to.

I'll let you know if we're a good "fit" for that one. We're either going to fly out or *gulp* drive out there to see the properties in person so we can judge whether or not we want to live in the particular house or not.

Here is my edited version of the Car& Driver article. I didn't put in that the GS will offer the 3.6L engine. There's no sign of a 1.5 L turbo four-cylinder being implemented.

"What it is: As before, Buick’s new mid-size Regal will be little more than a European-market Opel Insignia wearing the Buick insignia. er, Tri-Shield. With Cadillac’s rear-drive ATS busy chasing competing with the BMW 3-series, the front- or all-wheel-drive Regal has always seemed more like a low-budget -cost Audi A4. The new Insignia/Regal looks to move further upscale to pull even closer to the A4.
Why it matters: The rumored arrival of a Regal wagon on our shores would have been enough to get our attention, but the new Insignia’s sharp, athletic styling has us genuinely excited about a production Buick (we can’t remember the last time we said such a thing).
Platform: The same E2XX platform underneath the latest Chevrolet Malibu.
Powertrain: To keep the base price below $30,000, the Regal may come standard with the Malibu’s 163-hp, turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-four, paired with an automatic transmission to drive the front wheels. Much more enticing is the idea of a 2.0-liter turbo four producing between 260 and 300 horsepower mated, as it is in the Insignia, to an all-wheel-drive system incorporating the same GKN-supplied torque-vectoring rear differential used in the Ford Focus RS. Given that Buick killed off the manual-transmission version of the previous Regal GS for 2015, we’re sad to say that a stick-shift option is unlikely.

I've heard of municipalities and PDs forcefully dissolved over speedtrap shenanigans, maybe it should happen to counties too. Especially in the "small government" south, where there are seemingly millions of postage stamp-sized counties full of good old boys and endless redundancy. These are often the people who are the first to preach about personal responsibility.

The road was limited access and relatively deserted. My main fear of getting tagged that was the county I was in has a County Attorney that runs a "Traffic School" that only exists to rake in money to fund his office- thus no amendments or deferrals- the only option is to pay the extortion fee.

Sounds like everything went well, Mike. I had a colonoscopy on Thursday the 24th of August. The surgeon took out 2 polyps for testing to see if they're cancerous. I go back to my PCP on September 7th to check on my asthma. I'll find out then if the polyps check out OK. BP is up a tad, too, so doc is going to re-check that on September 7th.

I got a job offer from a Hospital in Wenatchee, WA! 4 1/2 months of searching has paid off. I already have my BLS card and just got my wallet card for my RPSGT on Monday, so licensing is sufficient.

Man, housing is expensive,  though, in Wenatchee. Going to be  pain to find us a rental house there. Boss says to check out Malaga, Rock Island, Orondo, or Cashmere, for something more affordable.

You're in a hot tourist spot right there, which is why. A lot of the land is being bought up to build rental cabins/chalets.

Congratulations and welcome back to the PNW!

    Speaking of auto robot pizza cars....something to think about;

    Facts & Predictions!

    1. Auto repair shops go away. A gasoline engine has 20,000 individual parts. An electrical engine has 20.

Electric cars are sold with lifetime guarantees and are only repaired by dealers.

It takes only 10 minutes to remove and replace an electric engine. Faulty electric engines are not repaired in the dealership but are sent to a regional repair shop that repairs them with robots.

I am thinking....your electric engine malfunction light go on so you drive up to what looks like a Jiffy-auto wash, Your car is towed through while you have a cup of
coffee and out comes your car with a new engine.

    2. Gas stations go away. Parking meters are replaced by meters that dispense electricity. All companies install electrical recharging stations.

    3. All major auto manufacturers have already designated 5-6 billions dollars each to start building new plants that only build electric cars

    4. Coal industries go away. Gasoline/oil companies go away. Drilling for oil stops.

    5. Homes produce and store more electrical energy during the day and then they use and will sell it back to the grid. The grid stores it and dispenses it to industries that are high electricity users.

A baby of today will only see personal cars in museums.

Her husband has Alzheimer's and my sister was in a horrible wreck when she was 14. She was in a coma for three months and on a mechanical ventilator, too. I love her immensely and can't get to Western Washington often enough. Now I can.

Maybe not for the area, but that $1200 would be $2500 here, and that's for an old house with old finishes. And even then, still a lot cheaper than the mortgage. Would it not be cheaper in Wenatchee proper?

Cashmere would be a straight shot in to Wenatchee on US2, maybe something out to the west? And yeah, gotta compete with holiday renters and probable money laundering developers. "Extreme vetting" doesn't apply to financial issues.

using robot technology to deliver pizza is like using a chain saw to cut a stick of butter.

Yes, but if that's what's subsidized and encouraged by those in power, it'll happen all day long.

I'd guess they have you use perioxide and vaseline to keep healing skin soft.

Last Monday they did surgery on my nose to dig out the basal cell and do some plastic surgery to hide the injury. They told me to take the bandages off in 24 hours and use hydrogen peroxide and vaseline after showering with soap and water. They said I didn't need to cover it. But adults stared and cringed. Little kids stared, their eyes got big, they panicked like they were afraid this would happen to their nose, and they held onto mommy's leg as tightly as they could. So I started covering it again until the stitches were out in one week.

Wenatchee Wa was probably cheaper when my father and two cousins spent some time there picking apples and living in a dorm during a stop on their 8000 mile trip trip to the West in a 1931 Ford from east Kentucky in 1931.

My only recollection of Wenatchee goes back to '74 when I was living and sailing in the PNW. An event having to do with a tank car explosion was referred to as the "Wenatchee Blast" and was heavily publicized; the name has stuck with me ever since.

Well, another chapter in the life of abacomike - back in the hospital once again.  Could not urinate for 24 hours - so I had to go to the Emergency Room and the doc had to catheterize me to relieve my bladder.  I could write a book about this life of mine.  They are also putting a pick line in my neck  because my veins collapsed and they can't get an IV line in me.  What a mess.

I would not be surprised if all of you guys thought I was a liar or psychologically out of my mind - but believe me - this is really happening.

Thanks, houdini. I was always wanting to get back to Washington and work out my last few years at home. Wenatchee isn't exactly home, but it is close to home. We are going to talk to a real estate saleslady in another 20 minutes here. Just popped the phone down after going to the 7th operator at AT&T/DirecTV in 1 hour and 35 minutes. I kid you not. Is their plan to get you so frustrated you just give up and then they can keep charging you exorbitant fees? :@ I am cancelling my DirecTV because in Washington state I can get my Seahawk games on regular TV. No need for DirecTV. And no need for NFL Sunday Ticket. Canceling on Sept. 14th for DirecTV and Sept. 21st for AT&T U-Verse internet service. Whew! I knew it was gonna be a bearcat and man, was it ever!

Hopefully the house saleslady experience won't be so exasperating.

Well, I am still hooked up to a Foley catheter awaiting the doctor's decision to keep me or take the catheter out and try going home.  They gave me a shot in my arm - antibiotic for urinary tract.  I just cannot believe what my life has become - doctors, hospitals, surgery, cancer, diabetes, blood clots, heart attacks, Hep C, tons of drugs, pain and lots of other things.  Hard to believe my body can take this onslaught of illnesses.  :'(

I agree with that idea 100%, but if it is so easy, why isn't it here already? Swappable batteries have been talked about for awhile, but don't really exist yet.

There'd also need to be a lot of infrastructure for it, as you'd need a battery station in virtually every little town.

    driver100 said:

Why wouldn't you drive into a service station, they slide out the old battery, and they slide in a new one? Could take less time than filling up with gas. Be the same as exchanging propane tanks.

Someone will do it! If there is a buck to be made, someone will find a way....the beauty of a capitalist system.
There are more possible issues with swappable batteries. As of now, it's the most expensive part of the vehicle (or almost). How would an new owner of a brand new vehicle feel if he just swapped those full batteries with ones that are at 90 percent spent lifecycle? I think not very enthusiastic. This is not a $20 propane tank that we can swap at Ace or Home Depot and not worry that the one we are getting is not as shiny as one we are dropping off.
There are always nay sayers. When Xerox made the photo copier people said, who will buy that, we don't need copies of everything. No one will buy one of those.

Then computers....they won't be used by individuals in their homes.....they are for businesses.

Batteries will become standardized, just like they are now with tablets and cell phones....one size fits almost all of them - I mean the charger cable.

You won't be responsible for the battery. Every time you "fill up" you will pay an extra fee in order to maintain a flow of new batteries. Costs will come down for batteries too.

True. The real estate saleslady's phone went to voice mail - then her phone told us that her voicemail is full! So I texted her and asked her what would be a good time for us to call her, and she hasn't responded. :s

So, yes, explorerx4, this would be a great time to explore trulia and zillow. B)

Renting is a beast all its own. I don't know if this is a good time or not, bank-wise or financial, for us ta buy. But for iluvmysephia1, the time is right. I'm just starting a job after not working for 4 1/2 months, the bank might frown on that. The saleslady said she could help us buy a house with '0' down and $1,200 a month. Sure she could!

FHA is 3.5% down. She named a program called USDA and said that if you qualify to use that you would pay '0' down. Makes our drive out west this weekend seem a lot more interesting, but, there's always the buts, right?

I drove through Wenatchee last fall while taking the long way to Spokane. Doesn't seem to have changed much from when I was a kid, compared to Moses Lake where I lived back in the day. Probably not an unpleasant place to retire.

    iluvmysephia1,
May sound a bit strange, but I know people who went through craigslist for their apartment rental.

firefighter28 - I have lived and worked in Moses Lake before, and, my Boss in Wenatchee says that I'm starting there in Wenatchee then possibly transferring to Moses Lake. If we do buy in the Wenatchee area, I like our chances for re-selling the house over there. Yikes. I can't wait to see how hopping the market is to buy over there. I don't see how we're not driving this Labor Day weekend!

explorerx4 - yeah, I have continuously checked Craigslist for house rentals in the entire Wenatchee - Entiat - Leavenworth - Quincy - Moses Lake - Ephrata area for about 2 weeks now. And I seem to have a chance at one rental in Entiat for (3BR, 2BA) $1,200 and a 4BR, 2 BA house in Quincy for "only" $1,300. I'm really picky with rentals - it chaps my hide to throw money down like that. But I'm thinking this area is so hot for sales and should be for so long that we should be safe buying around there. Heck, we probably should just retire there. I'm loosely planning on retiring in just 4 years, and a mortgage payment of say, $700 works way better for us than rent for $1,200 a month for 20 years.

George Gee Kia in Liberty Lake has a beautiful white 2017 Kia Forte sedan for only $15,214 too. That might be pushing it to get a new Kia when moving in to a new to us house in eastern Washington in August - September of 2017, but hey, let's try playing this fast and hard and see where the chips fall. B)

There would be about $7,500 owed on a 2011 Kia Soul with 88,233 miles on it. Pretty good shape overall - in fact, the 2nd to last service guy said it was in really fine shape - a clean Kia Soul, he said. George Gee Kia is about a 3 hour drive east from Wenatchee.

Man, maybe I should trulia a house in Wenatchee proper for us to look upon. Fun-fun-fun! :D

The white one's only $15,214. Wenatchee Kia is selling their Forte sedans for about $2,000 more! I'm so sure!

The white Forte sedan is selling for $15,214. That extra $5 must be to blend that beautiful white paint in so smoothly and softly, eh?

I love how Kia has designed these headlight lenses - it's really starting to suck me in. Oh yeah, tractor beam, James Carrey.

I do too, man. I want to see it in person. Things and dynamics are changing for my wife and I and I aim to check my possibilities out. Some would say moving times are not prime to buy a rig but I think it could be just the right time. If we buy in town there's a bus and the Mrs. could hop it to go shopping or...to go to...work.

Dog grooming, perhaps. Maybe dog sitting. Oh, in Wenatchee that would be prime. Rich people going on VAC need someone to watch their puppies for them. She's mentioned this job possibility before. She could pet watch right at our Wenatchee house!

A friend of mine's parents bought a house in what was the ritziest subdivision when I was a kid (still pretty nice) there last year for the price of a nice condo in Renton. They are now bored out of their mind though, apparently you can only golf and hang around the house so much.
