Decisions, decisions...

If the money is important to you I'd say go for it. Otherwise I think you've found your perfect retirement dream job.

Unless...

You can work it where the traffic fines require the drivers to loan you their cars for the week end in return for a light sentence.

@roadburner - I'm really torn about the advice I want to give you.

On one hand, @abacomike has summarized perfectly all the pros about staying with the BMW dealer. Not sure how many hours you are putting in there, and if nights and weekends are already involved, but you have a real passion for the job (except for the dimbulb yahoos, I suppose) that shows in your posts.

On the other hand, the number of quality folks in politics has to be running in the single digits. Our state governor started out as an engineer in the energy industry, then opened one of the first brewpubs in Denver. He got annoyed at some parking meter issues, and turned that into a run for mayor. After two terms, he was one of the most popular politicians in the state, and is now finishing up his second term as governor. He hasn't been perfect, but has been mentioned as a VP-candidate in 2020 (with John Kasich as the top name on the ticket).

What I'm getting at is that folks like you are rare in politics - you don't seem to be in it for yourself, but to provide a quality service to the population.

It all comes down to this - what do you want? Are you happy now? Will you regret not taking the political position that's been offered? Do you have aspirations for advancement at the BMW dealer?

Not easy questions to answer, for sure, but we all trust you'll make the right decision for you.

RB. I second Michaell's statement wholeheartedly. There are good people in political positions who usually get the grocery bag of insults lobbed at them by the media and other embedded politicians because they are upsetting the gravy train. You seem like someone who is confident enough to weather those grenades.

...and then there is the press butting into your private life and the public who will believe they own you to deal with Roadburner. If you run and win, will you be in a position to walk away after your term is over if you want? Also, do you have a thick enough skin to deal with all of these parameters?

RB: Only you can decide that one. You seem well suited to BMW job and they probably will want to keep and promote someone knowledgeable who can help sell cars.

My concern would be how the car selling model may change. Maybe car selling will remain the same, or, it may get streamlined. Maybe a place to test cars with service centers, but, cars might be sold directly online or by companies like amazon. Look how commissions have been slashed....because the salesman's role isn't as important as it once was. Then, there are the hours to consider too.....retail has become a brutal place to work - late, weekends, evenings, holidays............

When I was a judge Iwas up for election every four years, but luckily I only had contested elections in 1986 and 2002. Dealing with the press and the public were part and parcel of the job. The way I see it, I have the opportunity to serve 7 years- at that time I'll be 67 and I would have absolutely no interest i another term.
That said, I really do like my job, but the financial benefits and the free weekends and holidays are impossible to ignore.

Don't take on too much at first, renting might be good while you investigate the area, see where you will want to live....learn the landscape.

Totally agree. Unless you have kids that need to lock in a school district, or have some really good insight into the area available to you, I think it is usually a good idea to rent for a year and learn the area. A mistake buying house can become very expensive very quickly. I've practiced what I'm preaching over the years as well.

Sometimes I think people who complain about a corrupt system, should get involved in the system, and try to change it. It is easy to complain....the real work is making a difference.

RB....probably a little late to this party, but sounds like you're making the right move. I know you love cars, specifically BMWs. But, the reality of the situation, as @driver100 points out, is the industry overall is about to enter a period of upheaval given how Tesla is pushing the "status quo" out the door. May not happen today, or tomorrow, or even next year.....but somewhere in the foreseeable future, there's going to be a big change in how the manufacturers sell their cars.

That said, public office is where you have more experience. If you were 20, 30....hell, even 40 years old, you could probably make a case to rise through the ranks at a dealership or with a car manufacturer working for them. Staring at a career life span of 7 years? Take the better hours and money.

I think RB would be at the right level to fight corruption. Anything much higher, and it could be dangerous on a few levels (especially these days where sketchiness seems to be celebrated). Anything lower might not be relevant. From what a friend of mine told me about working for a county government in GA, it is not exactly the most ethical level of work in the world. And no doubt the same in most every state.

RB may serve as a monument opposing the concept that "normal decent" people never run for office, mostly owing to the "research" (real or imagined) that is often brought to bear.

Hope it works out.

Until now, my concept was that no decent person would ever run for office, or they did, they'd be beaten like a baby seal. I'll be happy to be proven wrong.

I'll try not to believe my lying eyes going forward.

To run for office, it helps if you are a psychopath or narcissist, or are just power hungry....or sometimes it runs in the family. Occasionally, it is the only job the person is ~~qualified~~ able to obtain. Very infrequently, good, decent people do get into office, but, that, is an exception.

Doubt that either would change parties. The prez talk has grown out of work they are doing on an updated healthcare plan that should annoy everyone, given the bi-partisan nature of the proposal.

It sounds almost like a no brainer and of course, you can always go back. They would take you back in an instant.

I'll visit my old store once in awhile. All of the managers are still there and probably half of the salespeople I worked with. I decided to retire when it was no longer fun. I found myself looking at my watch hoping the day would end. I got to the point where I would avoid certain customers. Instead of staying late for a customer who may or not show up I let someone else handle them for a half deal. Doing these things wasn't fair to myself, our customers or to the store. I no longer felt challenged. I loved going in as a Team Leader and closing the difficult cuustomers. I was very good at that but the drudgery of calling customers and taking scary test drives with people who shouldn't have had a driver's license finally got to me. That's when I left without any real regrets.

I might have mentioned this before but in the 1960s my father was part of an independent insurgent party that ousted an entrenched corrupt political regime in our city. I got an introduction to dirty politics at an early age when I would answer the phone and get death threats. Imagine the mind set of a person who would threaten a child with being murdered.

Nevertheless, dad's party won two elections in a row but started to become as corrupt as those they deposed. He became disgusted and left the party.

Lot of truth to that saying about power and corruption being intertwined. Hope RB can resist the lure.

BTW what judgeship is he seeking...traffic, criminal, civil? My cousin was a city court judge and he had some interesting stories about people who made regular appearances before him.

I think Obamacare was too focused on insurance companies and big pharma, with not enough attention paid to doctors, nurses, pharmacists and hospital administrators personally. The Republicans don't seem to have a real plan despite umpteen years of complaining though.

Someone talked about a potential Kasich 3rd party run. I say go for it. The current political duopoly in America has become as broken as the GM Ford duopoly of the 70's (rising prices, declining quality). We need new (competent) competition in our government. Draining the swamp means getting rid of the current political leadership in both parties, followed by the lobbyists in my book.

I am afraid this is going to be too political, but draining the swamp is a hilarious thought. You certainly don't accomplish it with a son in law and Wall Streeters. Neither D nor R are a way forward, in their current form anyway/

American personal habits don't help, but when one examines per-capita expenses and life expectancies, there might be more at play. I can't say I believe medial bankruptcy should be a thing in a truly developed nation.

I'll say one thing and then stop because this is way too political and off topic.

As someone who went without health insurance for 20 years because I was too poor to afford it and too rich to get it free I certainly didn't like the old system. We nearly went bankrupt when my wife had her first stroke. Having said that, the cost of having purchased health insurance during that peroid would have cost us 5 times what her medical bills turned out to be. A no win situation. Medicaid wasn't available because of the resource limits. Our choice was to sell the farm and lose our livelyhood or go without.

Hillarycare, Obamacare and other proposals would have forced us into bankruptcy or out of business.

I don't know what the answer is to the healthcare mess but I don't have confidence in a government run system's ability to contain costs and maintain quality. The current system bankrupts some but I think a forced government system will eventually bankrupt itself.

Sorry to change topic but....I need a quick answer if someone knows.

I was selling a pair of tennis shows on Kijiji (which is exactly like Craigslist, but in Canada). One guy wants them but lives 200 miles away. I don't have or want a pen pal account so I said if he could send me the money I would send the shoes....thinking a check. I said we would split the cost to mail....$7 each.

One thing that makes me wonder is at first he had a friend who lived near me who might buy the shoes for him, and the friend would pay cash...which is what I wanted when I placed the ad. Another thing is, if he is trusting me to put the money into my account, why not mail me a check?

He said he will put the money into my bank account.

Then, he said: I think my friend might be experiencing a hectic week.

Could we go to the shipping option? Can you provide me with an email address associated with your bank account for EMT payment? That will be the safest and the quickest.

So, my question is, if I give him my bank account info can anything go wrong?

As an Ohio resident I have to comment on the Kasick mentions. He's not doing well in Ohio as he wants to pretend. He's the bantam rooster that prances around the barnyard with his colors on. He's the spoiler when he's not the focus of the cameras. He's the one who's jealous of the other guys in a group and tries to backstab them with comments afterwards. The media points out the landslide reelection victory in his last gubernatorial campaign. Kasick pretends to have solved the money shortfall when he was first elected in Ohio. Reducing those meant the communities and schools had to make drastic cuts and then eventually go for levies--but that delayed the obvious results of the cuts for a few years as they used up rainy day funds and tried to save money by cuts to services. AND the state budgets have gone UP in spending each year. Higher income has helped keep the budgets balanced after he made drastic cuts. Note that local taxes in Ohio rank very high compared to the rest of the country.

He also crows about his having balanced the budget when he was on committees in DC, but he wasn't the only one on those committees, was he? See paragraph #1.

Most outrageous was his taking over the press conference after the terrorist drove the car into students on OSU's campus. A press conference about the incident turned into a crowing campaign speech about what he claimed to have done.

I suspect Jerry Springer could beat him for governor if Kasick could run again.

Absolutely nothing will go wrong for HIM. He'll have a GREAT day. Don't forget to incude your ID numbers and other information so he can open more account with credit cards and get loans in your name.

The way that money transfer works is that he goes into his online banking and uses that function that is shown there. You get an email from that bank saying you have a pending transfer incoming. It has a link included and you follow it. Just make sure the links are legit with https: prefixes and legit banking sites. I've done it a few times. It seems scary and somewhat magical but it does work.

One thing that makes me wonder is at first he had a friend who lived near me who might buy the shoes for him, and the friend would pay cash...which is what I wanted when I placed the ad. Another thing is, if he is trusting me to put the money into my account, why not mail me a check?

Could we go to the shipping option? Can you provide me with an email address associated with your bank account for EMT payment? That will be the safest and the quickest.

The way that money transfer works is that he goes into his online banking and uses that function that is shown there. You get an email from that bank saying you have a pending transfer incoming. It has a link included and you follow it. Just make sure the links are legit with https: prefixes and legit banking sites. I've done it a few times. It seems scary and somewhat magical but it does work.

Actually, you can use tennis shoes for pickleball very nicely.....and the laces are Kermit Frog Green!

Your answer sounds like it is pretty safe. What information does he need from me in order to send the funds.

That sounds fine. What email address will he be using? We can give him our account number and our email address. We can give him the banks number etc....like what appears on the bottom of a check. Will that do it.

btw....I had Asic Speed 2 shoes and they were great. Then i buy Speed 3s assuming they would be the same, and they made them narrower and tighter all around

This is a lot of work for $40! :@

You don't need to supply account numbers from what I recall, just a valid email address. Everything else is done via Interac and online banking. It's been a few years though.

The root cause of all this healthcare madness is that healthcare simply costs too much, and that this is caused by the greed of the medical community, big pharma, and graft and corruption. The only fix is to solve that issue. Nothing else is going to work.

When I was a kid growing up in the '50's, no one had health insurance, but we had doctors and hospitals that had reasonable prices. Everyone was able to just pay out of pocket. Even the few who were totally destitute were not turned away and received care.
