The above comment is a no-brainer ta me, too, though the Nissan Sentra is not well-received in Edmunds much at all. In fact, I think I am the only regular on here who has as much as said a peep in it's favor. I have liked Nissan for a long time, the 411 Bluebird and 510 sedans rock my house. I do have a plastic Revell model of a Datsun 510 coupe that I painted mustard yellow in my den here.

Yeah, driver100, you are correct, though. I change my liked cars often, so we'll see. Two more years of payments left to go on our 2011 Kia Soul that is about 65 miles short of 100,000 miles right now.

But you are thinking fondly of those vehicles that were sporty and brought pride to the owners and the brand. There is very little of that happening at Nissan these days, especially with the Sentra.
I was thinking just the other day.....why do they make Nissans? I mean, there are I think better choices in their category....cars that get better reviews, are more reliable or have some unique quality. Like Mazdas have a little more engineering and some unique models......but, Nissan??????

Maybe they need another name change. They used to be called Datsun which I understand was the name a German marketing firm came up with for their cars that were exported to the US and possibly other countries. Sounds like it is time to call in the Germans again.

FWIW, Son #1 had a 2004 (I think) Altima 6 cylinder that he thought was pretty good. Now he has a 2013 Infinity G37 that he likes even more. And lets not forget all the compliments I got on the Black 2015 Altima rental I had while Mrs. j's Subie was in the shop getting a right front fender due to a hit and run from a jacked up pickup in a parking lot back in 2016. :@

I like the name Datsun better than Nissan.....sounds stronger, and it does sound more German. I like the original Datsuns that came over, very square and sturdy looking. Then they tried to gussy it up a bit. I think someone else commented on the rear lights.....around 2012. Looked like a part from Star Wars.

JMonroe, I think those women were attracted to you when you had the Altima because they felt sorry for you....they wanted to take you in and mother you.

Hope all you guys with kids and grandkids are having a great Fathers Day. Spoke with my son and my youngest grandson today (it’s his 14th birthday today). Got a text from my other kid.

I was amazed by what the schools have done with his autism and Aspergers. I was able to understand everything he said which was miraculous. Two years ago I only understood every couple of words. Thank God for Special Education Teachers and their patience.

This morning I drove up to South Florida National Cemetery to pay my respects to my Dad for Fathers Day.

All in all, it was a nice day - just wish I could have had family here - maybe some day,

It was in the back of an old Ford pickup (1985, IIRC) and stuck out about 8' (50% of it's length). The owner was backing it out of his driveway, a blind driveway, on a blind curve, and his luck ran out on him. As he stated it, "I haven't had a collision in 43 years. I've lived here for decades and never had any issues getting out before. I just back up to the road, wait a few seconds while I count to five, and go."

He was a nice enough guy. Took responsibility immediately and was quite considerate letting us borrow his shop vac to clean the car. Hopefully it is an eye opener for them on the danger of that drive. You cannot really have a blind driveway next t o a skinny 55 mph road and expect that something like this will not happen.

For us, it seemed like a canoe was just sitting next to the road, along with shrubs, mailboxes, old cars, you name a thousand random things sitting a few feet from the road in this area. It went from sitting next to the road to being IN the road in a matter of seconds as we were only 50' or so from it. From our vantage, we could not even see that there was a vehicle there, backup lights, etc., that could have warned us of the possibility that it might move at any second.

My wife really did an excellent job of avoidance (it was aiming for the windshield in front of my face for a moment!), but the other driver said he didn't even know we were there until he walked out to the road and saw the glass everywhere. He said he thought he left something in his driveway and bumped into it.

.

Here's what it looked like when we were trying to leave the driveway... NOT backing out..... There's just no visibility there at all. My wife made me get out of the car and spot for her before she would pull onto the road.

Bought gas today at Costco - $3.04.9 a gallon for PUG. That’s 15 cents a gallon less than 2 weeks ago. So it would appear, for the present, that gas prices are declining almost as fast as the went up which is a first in my experience - usually it takes twice as long for them to decline as compared to the rate they went up.

Yes, no doubt! Hopefully, your experience is not just an anomaly! Current RUG price here is $3.48; diesel is running the same.

I used to like Nissans....owned a few. Now, with the rentals I’ve been getting, I don’t think I’m compelled to even set foot in their stores.

I know the Z is really long in the tooth. I think the last time they did an update on it seems like it was last decade. I’ve seen the Maxima at auto shows and followed @Michaell with his rental (which sounded positive). Everything else? Don’t know that I would take any time to test any of their cars.

Not a slam to those who like Nissans. There’s just nothing there that remotely peaks my interest.

I dunno, how are their retail sales doing? They have quite a fleet rep now, like GM of 15-20 years ago, and I am not sure Infiniti would exist today without its CUVs.

Now that's a small town. Impressive they have kept their own school, it must take in kids from farms in a wide radius.

I have family in a small town in SE WA, I went to a graduation there a few years ago, I think 30 were in that class. Makes the school I graduated from seem huge with 200 (freshman class was ~350, because of course).

Regarding Nissans we've had a very good ownership experience with the Altima. It's an unremarkable and unmemorable car but it's served us well for 4 years and having recently just made the last payment, we're in no rush to unload it. The plan now is to enjoy one car payment, bank the surplus, and reevaluate toward the end of the year or in early 2019, unless some unicorn lease or purchase option makes it a no brainer.

Same with the Bourbon Trail....lots of activity surrounding the small (and large) bourbon distilleries in this area.

That’s good...it’s good for the area....it’s good for the surrounding communities in both Southwest Ohio and Northern/Central Kentucky.

It seems like mirco breweries are trending in a lot of places. The first Saturday in June there was an event held at a former steel mill where old blast furnaces still stand (Carrie Furnace for anyone interested in history) and I estimate 50-70 mircro breweries were in attendance, all from Western PA. There were many names we knew but also many names we didn't. A lot of the brewers are re purposing storefronts and buildings in parts of the city and surrounding suburbs, particularly in the Mon River Valley. It's helping those communities get their name on the map and help them recover from the closing of all the mills....even 30+ years later.

And as @kyfdx noted when you have that many it's tough to stack rank them.

A lot of smaller Midwestern towns are trying to rejuvenate themselves by local entrepreneurship and close cooperation within their communities. They seem to be ignoring the divisive political chaos on the national level and getting down to building their own future. Everyone is welcome to the party. This is a good thing.

Yesterday was a lovely day here so I decided to resume driving after my surgery - they said a week off minimum (yesterday made it 10 days) but to use my best judgement. I went along the eastern shore, a place I always hoped to find a suitable piece of property (which has never happened). It was fascinating to see at certain points large ships on the horizon many miles offshore including what looked like a large car carrier along with a container ship. That part of the drive was beautiful yesterday, and then I went inland though a river valley on a series of 2-lane roads that are fun to drive on - they seldom have many vehicles, are pretty well-maintained, and have lots of interesting turns. The ATS acquitted itself perfectly. This version handles much better than my previous one and it was a gas. A perfect tonic for my system.

Happily, I think this is the first time we've ever had a collision while on a road trip. Last year, when my wife's 2010 Forester met its demise, it happened the day *before* we left for a road trip.

You drive on a logging road for 2 hours to get there....have to pull over to the side when a logging truck is coming. When you arrive you phone them, and they come over in a boat and take you to their place. 150 live on the car side, 150 live on the no car side of the river.

There is a beautiful school, that has about 14 students at any one time...Grades Kindergarten to 8. Up until recently the kids on the no car side got picked up in a School boat.

I have say I'm impressed by the job done on those windows!

It's relatively easy to set up a brewery and start selling craft beer. Bourbon is a whole different animal. Aging has to be for a minimum of two years and really four or more is needed for decent bourbon. If you start from scratch, that means minimum revenue (selling only white dog) for those years. Of course, a lot of those small craft distilleries buy product from larger ones and make up stories to make you think they are something special. In fact, it's just junk whisky in a fancy bottle with a lot of marketing. For the most part, I stick with the big boys who have been doing it for a long time. There are a few good newcomers like High West and Smooth Ambler.

These are for model year 2017. My friends at Nissan come in 5th in the U.S. They're rolling in the dough, and it shows. Now, I don't know about you, but if an automaker takes an 8.35% market share in the U.S., they're rolling along fine. My favorite Kia Motors comes in 9th place with a 3.42% share of the U.S. car sales market. These sales include trucks and SUV's. Kia sold 589,668 vehicles in 2017, Nissan sold 1,440,049 vehicles. Check out that GM share of the U.S. vehicle sales market! 17.41% share. Wow - Ford comes in 2nd with a share of 14.94%. Nissan is as sound as a pound. Now, how do they drive, handle and ride? That's an animal of a different taste and flavor - I'll let ya know if I ever stray from Kia and even test drive a Nissan!

As I say, they’re in pretty good shape. The Rogue and Altima are especially good sellers for them. Seems every other CUV you see on the road is a Rogue.

In particular, their mid-size pickup, Frontier, is fourteen model-years old now (since 2005 MY)! FOURTEEN! That's just crazy stuff. And, in that time, I think it has had one minor face lift is all. When Ford and VW (possibly VW) get their mid-sizes back in the lineup, and with Ford offering a diesel option (if they do), I doubt Nissan will retain even a sliver of market share unless they resort to selling their truck for peanuts (which they can do since I'm sure they've fully amortized any sunk cost in the product).

All you Nissan disrespecters have shown me is that, no matter how successful a Company is or may be, there will always, always be someone who will not like it. Perhaps there is no reason to change the Frontier because it's fine the way it is! And Ford is already at the top, I wouldn't worry about them leapfrogging Nissan, they're already dozens of feet above them on the totem pole.

Yikes - it's true, I hate ta say it, but cars and their discussions are sounding a lot like something I really, really hate:

POLITICS. I can't think of anything more nauseating than politics, save probably the Yulin Dog Festival, which runs from June 21-30, 2018, in the small Chinese town of Yulin. Thousands of dogs will be trucked there, starved for days, packed in metal chain cages, where onlookers will cheer while they're skinned alive, boiled alive and torched while alive, all to the delight of those watching. Some don't even pull any punches and just get the knife out and slice them up while they're alive. They steal people's dogs on their way to the "festival" and torture and eat them, too. No kidding. This has been verified because some of the dogs have their collars on them after "preparing them." NAUSEA and sadness.

Regarding the Nissan Frontier. The Frontier has always had a rep as the no nonsense stripped down truck. There isn’t much to change about it. It’s kind of a badge of honor.
Nissan is like Toyota. They make very basic, reliable vehicles that appeal to most people because of their simplicity and ease of use. They tend to cost less than Toyota or Honda. That’s a proven formula and I doubt they will change any time soon.

Thousands of dogs will be trucked there, starved for days, packed in metal chain cages, where onlookers will cheer while they're skinned alive, boiled alive and torched while alive, all to the delight of those watching. Some don't even pull any punches and just get the knife out and slice them up while they're alive. As @kyfdx alluded to, micro breweries are EXPLODING around here. Seems there’s a new one announced every couple of weeks. Same with the Bourbon Trail....lots of activity surrounding the small (and large) bourbon distilleries in this area. It's relatively easy to set up a brewery and start selling craft beer. Bourbon is a whole different animal. Aging has to be for a minimum of two years and really four or more is needed for decent bourbon. If you start from scratch, that means minimum revenue (selling only white dog) for those years. Of course, a lot of those small craft distilleries buy product from larger ones and make up stories to make you think they are something special. In fact, it's just junk whisky in a fancy bottle with a lot of marketing. For the most part, I stick with the big boys who have been doing it for a long time. There are a few good newcomers like High West and Smooth Ambler.

Straight bourbon has to be aged at least 2 years, otherwise there is no minimum duration of aging to be called a bourbon. However IIRC Nourbon aged less than 4 years has to have its age on the bottle. The age stated on the bottle has to be the age of the youngest whiskey in the bottle.

You are taking criticisms of Nissan way too personally. Criticism is nowhere near the same as disrespect. I'm sure everyone here respects Nissan, but they certainly aren't putting them on a pedestal. The majority of folks here are enthusiasts and Nissan just isn't currently offering much to be enthused about. Sales means next to nothing since the vast majority of vehicle sales are to all the nonenthusiasts whom you won't find on these boards, by and large. Hence the massive sales of things like the Camry, Corolla, and CVT 4-cyl Accords, etc.

So, for the Frontier, it doesn't work, sadly. Their sales are at the bottom of the barrel (and will only continue to get worse). I love the look of the truck - they did a great job with it - but its the rest of it that lags behind, and it doesn't have anything going for it aside from that. The economy is poor, the price is high, the tech is "old school" (I do like that aspect!), etc. I cannot find specific figures on % of fleet sales, but I have to suspect it is becoming a larger and larger percentage of the total. I cannot even recall the last time I saw a new (private) Frontier on the road.

It just doesn't make a lot of sense for them to marginalize their product and then need to try and woo "new" customers after their own customer base has long since bailed on them because they didn't want to buy the same truck at the same inflated prices when they needed a new one ten+ years after their last purchase. So, yes, they have saved a ton of R&D money on letting it age, but, if they do update it, they end up with a new Titan scenario all over again.
