I have been working on transferring apps and data to our new phones. I discovered that Google has a full copy of the data from my current phone available to use to restore to my new phone. I was NOT aware that Google had been given permission to do a full backup.

I wonder how many others have their Android phones fully copied onto Google's servers. I wonder how much the data from those backups is sold for, in the manner of facebook using and/or selling that data over the last 6-8 years.

I recall Google having been tested sometime this year as to their use of the location data to track one's activities, store to store, time spent, etc.. The finding was that even when the location data was turned off or Google did not have permission and said they weren't using it, the location data still got sent to Google when the phone had access. These testers actually manipulated the phone communications sot hey could intercept what was being sent from the phones back to "headquarters."

    Does Apple do the same?

    Just no privacy anymore.

Just wait until autonomous driving kicks in and people start surfing/shopping while driving. Google and others will be mining the inside of your head 24/7, looks like.

We went by a major mall in Sarasota yesterday, has a Macys, Dillards etc. The cars were inching their way along in the parking lot, it looked like every spot was taken and it would take about an hour just to get to a parking spot.
Why do people put themselves through that?

Market is down another 400+ points again with volume exceedingly high for such a shortened trading period today.  I’ve watched all the economics mavens explain why the markets are in Bear territory, but there is no one reason for the trading losses.  The Fed is one reason, but then there’s China and trade and the partial Gov’t shut-down and a general uneasiness among investors.

Not too much to celebrate in regards to the stock market.

Lots of negative news from the mainstream in total terror voices. Lots of small sellers, few larger buyers. Trading days before holidays are usually unbalanced. I'd be surprised were there not more volatility.

Vacation time. My opinion is that major stock houses are not buying (or selling) before the short days when Orders were put in to their mutual fund companies Friday to sell fulfilled today. Most bigger traders are on vacation, the rest of the week. I would expect large houses next week to be staying out. Perhaps some pickup buying will start quietly. The computer operated buy/sell programs--who knows what.

The Wall Street companies will be buying while they talk down the markets to the "little people" on the shows on TV and the articles in part of the internet.

The little people usually are wrong on tops and bottoms. And as for the media picking stocks, I got taken once when the print business media was pimping a stock. Something called Marathon Oil that had split from X, IIRC. Refinery headquarters were still in Ohio for what had started as the Ohio Oil Company. Of course, the stock went down for a long period. But since recovered and has spun off another company. Both send checks. . Whenever we drive past I see the large tank by I75 with the patriotic picture and love it.

My mutual funds must have been selling at the market highs because I just got a phenomenal bunch of checks with spectacular long term gain in addition to the regular dividend. Quite a Christmas present.

I won’t look at my principal because I’m sure it will depress me. Fortunately, I invest in a lot of dividend mutual funds which keep cranking out the cash. Most of it tax free from Roth accounts. The beauty of mutual funds is that someone hopefully smarter than me is making the decisions.

We ran out of milk and we need some just for today. Made the mistake of running into QFC (owned by Kroger). The last time I saw that many middle fingers in a parking lot, I was driving on roosevelt blvd in Philly. Yowza.

Thst’s The Christmas spirit alright. All day I was trying to be extra courteous to other drivers in keeping with the season.

In that vein i’ll tell you about about our work lunch in the hills of northern Connecticut today. We took a bunch of cars down rt. 8 into Stratford and on the way back had lunch at the Farmington river diner in Otis. One of our drivers recommended it and the reviews were generally good except for mention of “crabby waitresses”.

We got there just before noon and there was a sign on the door that said “closing at noon”. I asked if we were too late and they welcomed us in. The wait staff was two older women and one was probably the source of the crabby waitress review...except she was crabby like your favorite grandmother who scolds you in a caring way. We were pretty much the only people there and they came over and chatted with us until the food came.

Food was good and not too expensive but we had a good laugh at the folksy signs scattered around the place.

One read: IF YOU DON’T HAVE ANYTHING GOOD TO SAY....SIT NEXT TO ME.

On the front of the building was a sign that said: ON THIS SITE IN 1897...NOTHING HAPPENED!

I won’t mention the sign over the toilet in the unisex bathroom. It might get me in trouble.

A good finish for the holiday season.

Actually, driver, I believe they do it as part of a seasonal “ritual”!  It’s because they want to do it!  It’s part of their nature to be engaged in shopping at the mall for Christmas presents and to “get into the spirit of Christmas”! Retailers have succeeded in brainwashing Americans to buy gifts at Christmas.

I know this for a fact because I, too, have been brainwashed by years of TV and newspaper ads.  Around Thanksgiving, I go into a sort of “trance” as the first Christmas shopping ad is broadcast on TV.  It’s an addiction of sorts.  Get in the car on Christmas Eve and battle the traffic so you can announce to your friends and family - “I bought your Christmas presents last night at the mall!”  :DB)

    Question for the experts.

I’m watching Chasing Classic Cars with Wayne Carini and he’s looking at @ 66’ Mustang Shelby GT 350. The thing is a rust bucket but Wayne thinks it will sell for $150,000.

What am I missing? This is really a 65’ converted by Shelby in 66’ which seems to make it rare but the car looks trashed.

Well if the VIN code is a '65, and if the market accepts it as a '65 GT 350, then it's worth a boatload of money--at least 3 times more than a '66 GT350. But if Carini has it wrong, and collectors think it is a '66, then he's going to lose.

The GT350 was a very original one-owner car that came with a big stash of NOS parts and full documentation from the start. It was a “carryover” car i.e. a 65 that Shelby modified and sold as a ‘66. It was stored for about 40 years. Went to Bonhams for auction and sold for $145K.

Now that is my kind of diner! Not the pretentious place with the fancy dishes and glassware, not the kind of places where the smaller the portion the more expensive the meal is. I like a place that is a gem, a real find. A place where they take pride in what they do. A place that actually makes the food, doesn't buy it premade, flash frozen, and then heated in a microwave. A place that is fun, a place like the Farmington River Diner....even the name doesn't sound phony.

I know, it is a ritual and besides that's what makes the economy click....consumer spending is a huge part of it. Gallup reports that US adults estimate that they will spend approximately $885 on gifts this year, slightly lower than 2017's expectations. Below is an average of a range of findings: 33% expect to spend at least $1000 on gifts. 22% expect to spend between $500 and $999.

    That's a lot of buying!

We drove the X1 up to Northern KY to visit my wife's family today. Traffic was fairly light on I-71 and it was moving. I spent a lot of time between 80 and 90, and the only issue was that the X1 wanted to run faster still. As it was, the trip computer reported I averaged 62.5 mph for the 225 mile round trip and averaged 25.5 mpg.
    Works for me...

I had to run over to Publix to pick up a few things yesterday and the parking lot was jammed full.  I finally found a parking space and walked into the store.  It reminded me of what it’s like when a hurricane is a few days away - no milk, no bread, no chicken breasts! It was a waste of my time.

So I tried Walmart and that was my second mistake.  Never found a parking space.  So I went into Walgreens and got some milk and gave up on the rest of my short list of items I needed.  New Year’s Eve is another day to avoid shopping.

Venture, since you avoid shopping for food as a general rule, I can understand your disbelief when you tried to do some last minute shopping yesterday.  Food shopping is my 2nd most hated activity in life!  My most hated activity is the day my cleaning lady comes - because I spend an hour cleaning and straightening up so that when she arrives she won’t suspect I am a pig at heart lavishing in a sty.  Can’t afford to lose my bi-weekly cleaning lady which is why I gave her $50 for Christmas.  :DB)

You're cheap. I got my cleaning lady a robot vacuum cleaner a few weeks ago that has a retail value over 250 bucks. I didn't pay that because I'm not sure she is going to be worth that much now that she won't have to push her old vacuum cleaner around too much. The last thing I want to do is spoil her. FWIW, I'm still waiting for my gift. I hope it's something I can use while helping Son #1 with his flip house. Getting there but S L O W L Y.

Going to do our ritual dining out tonight at a Chinese restaurant with both sons, both DIL's and the 5 brats. I hope I don't get stuck with the bill again. Would like to break that ritual once and for all :'( .

I don’t understand why the grocery stores are crazy on Christmas Eve. I know that it does happen, I’ve seen it, but I don’t understand it. WalMart I understand, people doing last minute shopping for Christmas gifts. But who buys Christmas gifts in the grocery store?

The house next to me is a rental unit, one of the 3 young women living there carries a bicycle in the back seat of her Hyundai as a permanent fixture. I’m not sure if she ever rides it, I’ve never seen her riding the bike, or even taking it in or out, but the bicycle is a permanent resident in the back seat.

Not quite, snake.  It’s an insurance policy that protects me from my cleaning lady quitting - or even worse - telling her other clients in my building that I live in a messy condo unit.  I have to cover my bases, to be quite frank.   :D

I have heard quite a few people make similar comments about precleaning before the cleaning lady comes. I’ve never had a “cleaning lady”, but if I did I might straighten up a bit to avoid having her move things and never being able to find them again. But not cleaning, no.

A few years back I attempted to find a cleaning lady and failed. I can hire men to build a fence, patch drywall, wash and wax my car, etc, for quite a bit less per hour than what a cleaning lady costs. So I just do it myself.

    YMMV

Yes, we do a lot of putting things away, "straightening things up", etc. before our cleaning lady arrives....but we leave all the bathroom cleaning (5), vacuuming, dusting, etc. to her. We have had her for about 10 years and she is almost part of the family.

You have to straighten up all the surfaces so the cleaning lady can dust and clean them, and put away things on the floor so she can vacuum and mop. I find it helps us to keep the house neat — at least twice a month!

I just got notice from FedEx that my JackRabbit electric bike will be delivered on January 2. They missed a Christmas delivery, but not by much. :)

    http://www.jackrabbit.bike/

I was quite entertained by the YouTube video promoting the bike where the woman takes it right off the ground after riding and puts it in the (seemingly) unprotected backseat of her BMW convertible.
Yeah. I cringed a little when she did that. Bike people! :@
Wait a minute, a true bike person wouldn't be caught dead on an electric bike.

    Good point

I think it’s just people who entertain.  I had to go yesterday for a few things we forgot and ice.  It was pure bedlam as expected.  I actually almost got hit walking back to my car because someone wasn’t paying attention.  Is what it is!

Some stores are worse than others.   The Wegmans in Cherry Hill NJ (@stickguy) knows the place was already “rocking” at 6:55 AM on the 23rd.   They said it’s their single busiest day of the year.   There was already a fight in the parking lot before we got there (a team member told us).   Pure insanity.

By the way if you work in retail either in a store or behind the scenes (as I do) you simply must tip your hat to Wegmans.  It’s one of the finest retail outlets and best grocery store in the world.  So thankful to have one fairly close.  It makes entertaining a breeze because they have everything.

Grocery stores get busy with people getting things they just found out that they need or ran out of. I had to make a last minute run due to my wife ruining a dish and wanted to remake it.

:DB)

That's like fixing your car before taking it to your mechanic.

Not quite, snake.  It’s an insurance policy that protects me from my cleaning lady quitting - or even worse - telling her other clients in my building that I live in a messy condo unit.  I have to cover my bases, to be quite frank.   :D

Wouldn't having a professional cleaner coming in say that you're living in a messy condo?

Not to mention all the people who have bike racks on their car but don't have a bike on it. Come on now, it takes a minute to put one on or take one off.

The Farmington River is one of the few rivers that flows away from the equator. I'm guessing it's due to the topography. It pretty much divides our namesake town in half. Merry Christmas or whatever you may be celebrating today, even if it's only sleeping in. :)
There are a lot of rivers that flow away from the equator.
No matter which direction the equator is, no river can flow uphill.

Most of the rivers in Canada flow north, including the Red River that forms the MN/ND border before it runs into Canada.
Most of the rivers in Kentucky flow north to drain into the Ohio.

Bottom line is topography is the one determining factor.

Really, you can buy a 1966 Shelby GT350 in much nicer condition than this for that price. Not sure why someone paid that much for this one. If it says "1966" on the title, then it was overbid. Perhaps the "celebrity" association clouded someone's vision.

Grocery stores are busy at Christmas time because people buy FOOD, and lots of it. A big time of year for family dinners, and for pot luck dinners, and for people making extra fancy meals, and then there is a trip back to pick up things you forgot, and then there is last minute gifts like flowers, wine, candies you can pick up.

    Yeah, Merry Christmas guys.

A couple of years ago Consumers Report rated supermarkets in the US and I'm pretty sure Wegmans was No.1. We don't have Wegmans in the Burgh area but our large supermarket chain was about in the middle of the pack of around 50 of the supermarkets they rated. What surprised me was that Aldi's was in the top 10 which made me wonder if CR knows anything about supermarkets. But, I have heard that Wegmans is very good so maybe they got that one right.
