My dad has continued to slowly improve. There was a 'scare' on Sunday since he was bleeding from 'somewhere' - suspected a "stress ulcer". On Monday they did the scope to the stomach and found the ulcer, but it had stopped bleeding. They moved him today from ICU into a room. It will still take some time before he's ready to go home. (My mother sounds TIRED.)

I'll check at my dealer, I take it you want a 5MT WRX '03 wagon.

Brenda: your mom must be really stressed out, hope her and your dad pull through soon!

Loosh: I just don't understand some dealers. Past a certain point, they start losing money just by having the car sit on the lot because of the interest they are paying. They should be anxious to unload an unloved 03 and cut their losses.

I guess it's good that used WRXs are holding their value so well unless you're a buyer. Heck, you may as well get the 04 and then turn your attention to smoothing things over with your wife! 03, 04, ahh, it's all trivial compared to keeping the wife happy! (my wife still gives me a hard time about my somewhat-impulsive WRX purchase, I'll probably never live it down).

    Craig
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
it would be a pretty impulsive buy for me, too, since there isn't an overwhelmingly compelling reason to do this,
  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
Well, if it's any help, my thinking was:

    1) no kids yet, it's a good time to do it now because I probably won't be able to afford or justify it with a family

    2) was affordable in my current budget

    3) driving the car is a blast!

    4) I could get run over by a bus tomorrow, so I may as well enjoy myself today

    5) if this is the worst thing my wife can complain about, then I'm probably doing OK!

I saw my first WRX STi on the street yesterday. The vanity plate was PUNK KID. Looked a lot like all those pics ModBob keeps posting in the chats.

The driver was not edging over the 35mph speed limit at all. I tried to get next to him at the light and ask how many tickets were in his collection already, but he wouldn't keep up with me. Wagons can sneak 4 mph over I guess, but not a rally looking blue streak.

Loosh, you mentioned what would be a big factor for me in deciding between '03 vs. '04. The seats!

I could get used to the pug-nosed, cross-eyed look :-), but the '03's seats are excellent! I only sat in the '04 once at the NY auto show and was a little disappointed. I would spend some more time in each if I were you.

  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
why couldn't they have left that alone?
  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
get an '04 and swap the seats? :-)

    -Dennis
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
that's a possibility, I assume the airbag stuff just plugs right in. I'd rather have sporting grip than Sparco looks. I haven't seen much on the way of OEM seats for sale....

which reminds me, I don't think I can get the RS seats out of the GT. The previous owner removed the seats to do an amp install, and kind of mangled the threads on the driver side; we barely got the bolt out and the RS seats in. Think anyone would notice on the trade? Or should I bring the OEM seats along and let them worry about it?

    Steve-

We had started discussing adopting before we went to Mexico, but when we were down there my wife started talking to a few women with new borns. I guess her "biological clock" started ticking rather loudly; one of the people recommended looking into kids from El Salvador - even gave us her number since her sister just went through it. I'm trying to get her to go with me to an intro to adoption session one of the agnecies offers. I have to admit it's a scary thought. Last week I turned 42 and I'm thinking do I or don't I want kids. That's why I'm curious to others experiences. Good Luck, and congrats on finally getting a date!

Brenda- Hope everyone is doing better. Just hang in there and make sure you all get some rest. Keep us up to date.

Dec 2, gotta mark the calendars. Our future God son should be arriving in Jan or Feb.

I e-mailed Loosh pretty much the same sentiment about the '04 being a far better deal, but...the seats are a biggie. Keep in mind he swapped the seats on his Legacy GT, so that does matter.

Brenda: hang in there. If he's out of the ICU that's gotta be good news.

  • lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565
I would think that Loosh could find some '03 seats on the other board from people who pulled theirs out for something more exotic, e.g., JDM STi or actual Sparcos. If uniformity of upholstry is an issue he could even go for leather or alcantara. I've seen a couple of '02-03 WRXes with aftermarket leather (Katzkin maybe?) that looked really professional, even factory-installed.

Mark: I'll keep you posted on the over-40 first-time dad experience. ;-)

Ed/Loosh: buy now, before the babies arrive, or you'll be running to the minivan store. ;-)

    *running feet recede.....door slams*

    Brenda- that's good news!

Mark- oh great, I'm 33 and having that struggle. I thought it became clearer!? :D So much for MY clock. Actually no, I love kids and often think how great they must be, but.... Life is also good right now, and I don't know what I would want to give up either. Sounds selfish I know, I guess I'm just scared of the massive life change.

Juice- actually Kirsten has been very clear- absolutely no minivans until we get into the 3 kid range, if ever. She's happy with the OB and intends to stay with good-handling, AWD wagons. Guess who else wants a WRX?

There is an old saying at home, you will be along time looking at the inside of a coffin lid, so if it does not break the budget go for it,

Since I look after my cars better than most, I could also say that there was never a compelling reason to trade any of them but I did, on that note I was talking to the guy yesterday who bought the 93 Accord wagon that I traded on the Subaru. He has added 200,000 kilometers to it and says it is the best car he ever owned.

The moral, I could still be driving that car quite comfortably but I ain't.

      Cheers Pat.

If it's of any relevance, I still haven't completely written off the possibility of a WRX wagon as a new dad at 34.

You can thank the obesity epidemic in the US for the change in the '04 seats. They're not as snug, but still pretty nice.

    Ken
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    They fit me fine! LOL

I prefer the '03 seats also. They braced you better, and the smaller head rest never got in the way.

  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
thanks, you both are awesome enablers!!

Juice- "Sport Styled seats" they call them now. I guess if it becomes too big a deal I can swap somehow. Hey wait, who said I was buying!?!

(ugh. the thought of returning the GT to stock, minimal though the mods may be, does not thrill me.)

    Or I could wait for a 9-2X :))))
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
Oh, of course you're not buying. You're just "shopping".

Mod un-install: Maybe mike can cut you a deal with AZP?

9-2X: While the upscale trim does look nice, I'm not sure how comfortable I am having to rely on the Saab dealer network chain. We've got it pretty good here with Patti looking over us.

    Loosh-
That's the thing. At this stage of life we have become comfortable as just the 2 of us. On the other hand, everyone around us have kids. Heck, I'm a great uncle twice! It'd be nice to teach someone to drive stick though, like my dad tried to do for me.

My wife *still* gives me dirty look about not letting her get a sedan. We should swap cars for a week to try it out.

Kids are loads of fun. I watch my 16 month old playing with a Matchbox car and I get all choked up! ;-)

Just wait 'til they can drive go-carts.

Anytime you want 'grown up' kids just adopt a few Nasioc folks for a week or 2! Then you'll be happy you don't have kids.

Pulling out of a shopping center this morning. Light turns green and just as I am about to hit the gas, two SUVs run the light right in front of me. After a few grumbles, I pull out and turn left. 2 seconds later a Jeep Cherokee pulls out of a gas station right in front of me. I slam on the brakes, the front ABS kicks in and I turn the car into the entrance to the gas station staring at other driver. He looks at me and hits the gas - no apology or anything. Jerk. I hate SUVs and their drivers. (Paisan not withstanding).
    OK - feel better now.

    Greg
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Well, i'm glad you added "their drivers" cause that's the root of the problem. Not the SUV itself, it's the drivers of them that are uncourteous! I hate em too!

Hate the driver, not the car! :)

today, some kinda DeVille thing. He ran the left turn signal light by a mile. I was in my far right lane next to a bus so I didn't see it happen. My light turned, I let out the clutch and went and "Hello!!!"

P.s. saw a Baja with Mfr. tags today. I waved; figure he might know Patti or something.

Well - I tried. It's a lot more involved to "share" information than I realized. It's not an SOA thing as much as an FHI thing. There are information embargo's for numerous reasons that I won't bore you all with. I was impressed with our e-business manager. He understood the need to change the way we do things because of the internet - we just have to find a way to change the culture. I don't think it's hopeless - it is just more of a long term project.

So, as much as I hate to let anyone down, I really can't share what I see/hear for now. I'm hoping that this will change during my tenure, but who knows. I'm sorry about this.

Just so you know, don't always believe the rumors that you hear/read on the web. Some folks will say things thinking it's harmless, but some of what's "out there" is incorrect. With things like pricing, it's not locked in until it's very close to a launch.

The gentlemen that I met with today recognize that this will be a big product launch and I believe that they will be actively finding ways to involve the folks here. They also recognize what "works" and what doesn't with these chats, so I think they will be much better in the future than what we've seen. Stay tuned!

<<There are information embargo's for numerous reasons that I won't bore you all with.>>

How does "Loose Lips Sinks Ship" sound?

It's not a SoA or FHI thing. It's all industries. It's a warfare out there, seriously.

    -Dave
  • subaru_teamsubaru_team Member Posts: 1,676
industry thing - I'm just hoping for Subaru to be more cutting edge. We still might get there. I guess it's because of how the information is wanted so badly here that I hate letting folks down. And...I believe it would be a good thing. It seems that people get the information (frequently incorrect information) so if we can control that by providing accurate information early, what's the harm? I'm terrible at politics though so maybe I just don't get it?

  • jlemolejlemole Member Posts: 345
Hey, SoA is light years ahead of every other car maker just by virtue of your presence here, Patty. Hopefully they'll also realize what a great resource this can be because there is a great core of avid and knowledgeable Subie fans here, who really want to see the company succeed and who take the time to provide constructive comments as opposed to just griping.

  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
I like the idea of "getting us involved," whatever that may be.

    Bob
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
My idea - have SoA host a chat that coincides with a new product intro, or release of information.

For instance, maybe the week of the auto shows where a new model debuts, host a special chat where we can ask questions about the new model.

For *once*, they can talk, they'll have a receptive audience, and we can get questions answered. Plus they can measure early reaction.

I'd love to hear other ideas.

Great chat. 31 people! Missed the record by just one person! If you are reading this and you did not come, it's your fault! ;-)

I'd only teach someone to drive a stick in a clunker. I wouldn't want them to practice on my car with the good clutch. (I taught my daughter to drive a stick.)

juice: kids are loads of fun...but they grow up into teenagers! Also, like your idea about a chat at product launch. By then, just about everything's finalized and they can talk.

At a former company, we actually kept our sales people in the dark about new products. Their job was to sell TODAY'S products. They saw new products just prior to launch at a "rah! rah!" sales meeting.

I was almost ready to apologize for not making the chat record, but I see it's JimmyP's fault after all...man, am I relieved :-)

  • bat1161bat1161 Member Posts: 1,784
One of these years I will make it a point of keeping a Thursday night open to make the chat.

Mike- I don't know if I can handle a group of the "N" club people for a couple of weeks. I've already got the gray hair, I don't want to lose it:-) Actually , I "rent" for a weekend at a time my nieces. I'm looking forward to renting them for a week next year, and take them to Mexico with us.

Beth and I have been 'joined at the hip' since 1978, but she really didn't want kids. For 15 years, life was about jobs, travel, new cars, fun.... Heck, we even went into China in 1985 while on vacation. Cold War time - way long before many Americans were venturing there. Then we starting taking in foreign exchange students, and we started taking about kids of our own. By then, I was extremely happy with our DINK life, and saw no reason to change that. But biological clocks prevailed. Then we found out it wasn't going to be so easy to do, and started talking about adoption! Few things have every scared me more than that decision, but here we are going back to the well again. And I am going on 47, for gods sake. We change. A new phase in life. Incredibly rewarding. Going on 8, Emily is my best bud. I have been taking her to go-cart tracks for 2+ years, and sometimes she drives solo!

I strongly advise that you go to an adoption workshop. We went to one in 1995 at CW Post University on Long Island. They ran an excellent full day affair at that time. A well done program will help you and your wife explore your inner soul to see if it is right for you. I wish you the best of luck.

    Teens...aaaaah! :o)

Winds was CRAZY around here yesterday. A 4"x4" pole support in my car port blew out of place. It has a fence attached to it and the whole thing almost fell over.

Thankfully it didn't hit the Subies. The fence actually kept it from falling entirely, but it was dangling loose! Had to do an emergency fix and then brace it up, all last night in the wind chill.

My grill cover blew off, and I only found it this morning. It took off like a kite!
