I wonder how they are going to handle lease turn ins. My brother is set to turn in his Fusion in a few weeks....wonder how that would work if dealers aren't open.

Guessing either an extension or some sort of coordinated remote pickup.

I'm thinking the former, depending on how much gets shut down.

The bank is still open for business. I'm sure they are figuring something out. I had an independent bank lease that was up in 1998, and they picked up the car at my house.

Also, with dealer service departments open, it could be: Drop it off at the service department, and give them the keys.

If he has to turn it in and can't pick up his new car we've already offered him his choice of the TLX or truck to use for the time being. We're not really using any of the cars much right now. The ZHP still has half a tank from the drive to PIT lol.

I just filled my ZHP up yesterday. We're expecting rain for the next 10 days plus I suspect joy rides are going to be verboten soon. I'll put it on the battery tender soon.

I didn't think about the part of needing a new car.. Of course, if he has a deal for the same brand, through the same bank (Ford Credit), then they may make allowances.

No punches for me for a while. Dealers and other non-essential businesses are closed in my state beginning tomorrow at 8 PM.

I wonder if they can still do any business at all? I can’t imagine them having to pay all those floor plan expenses while their inventory keeps losing value. There could be millions involved for the big dealers.

I believe they can still do business so long as the showroom is closed. It will still hurts them a lot, though.
How would they do the paperwork, slide it under the door? Can you do it all on line?

Test drives must get complicated too.

Drop off is easy. Just make sure to photograph how many keys. Service writer can easily do the very brief walk around and give you confirmation receipt. The bigger issue is the pre=return inspection. VW and Hyundai required that in advance by an independent company that sent a person to your house. Who knows about that now. But ways around that too, I assume authorizing service writer to do that also.

But yeah the bigger issue is likely a replacement car.

Why would that be? All alone in a car or all alone in a house, what’s the difference? If I couldn’t at least go for a drive I think they’d eventually find me up on the roof barking like a dog. :s

Most of the shelter in place rules limit movement for non-essential activities. I'm sure I could say I was out on an errand, but would be hard to justify if I was 50 miles from home and was stopped.

It'll just be a turn-in and if that can be facilitated through a service department, that would be fine. The inspection is scheduled for next week though and no word on whether that's going to take place per governor's orders on non-essential businesses shuttering. My money is on it getting rescheduled.

I can’t imagine that would stick. Term is up. Drop it off where they designated it to be dropped off. Take a pic of it at the drop off point. Send a letter to the financial institution with the pic. Whether they’re open or not is irrelevant.

Yeah, that won’t go over well. I would not make any more payments. Send them a letter if needed telling them if they want the car to come and get it, otherwise you will keep it until they can take it back.

Because they are closed does not mean they can force you to pay for it.

Until the captive formally assumes ownership the lessee would be on the hook for any damage, vandalism, theft, etc. I personally would not be willing to take a gamble the "not my problem" argument would pan out.

LOL. someone else posted GG's answer, and my reply was the same as pensfan's.

Honestly, it isn't the bank's fault they are closed, either. It is just an unfortunate situation all around. That said, the banks were bailed out with taxpayer money, so I can't say I feel bad for them. I'd likely take lots of pics, including the odometer, and send all that in, but obviously keep it in my driveway and retain insurance.

I parked the Tacoma on Friday and didn't even look at it until this AM. Stayed home and worked all weekend. taping, filling holes, sanding, painting, moving furniture, disassembling furniture, cursing, assembling furniture, cursing. I did manage to leave the house to pick up pizza (in the Prelude) yesterday afternoon.

Stopped at Publix yesterday to pick up a few things. Folks were acting normally but there was a line at the sandwich counter where I was. No chicken products but managed to pick up a couple of steaks for dinner tonight. Figure I'll be going in very couple of days to get fresh stuff but luckily we have a lot of open supermarkets down here.

@Sandy, did South Fla change recently? The last time I visited my Delray Beach SIL (last Spring) all I saw were Publix markets which is like what I saw on other visits. Lots of them; almost in every shopping plaza with a Walgreens close by too. I think I saw one non Publix place somewhere but I can’t remember the name of the place. If you want to see a lot of DIFFERENT supermarkets just go to the smallish SC town I lived in from ’92 to ’97.

To name some within 2 miles of us: Kroger, Bi-Lo, Walmart, Winn-Dixie, Food Lion (2 of these), Pigley Wigley (FWIW, Mrs. j refused to shop in a store called Pigley Wigley). I can’t remember the name of a couple others but they were there, honest. And yes, we finally got a Publix too which turned out to be Mrs. j’s favorite. Like I said, a smallish SC town, but man, did those folks like to eat.

Q, I doubt Carvana is going to be very effective buying now, but maybe you get lucky. Hyundai financial is likely all backed up too, and not likely you get priority. But doesn’t hurt to try.

Or get the new one and deal with the old one later. Not like it costs much.

Rodo takes Trade’s too, but I think that’s actually through Carvana.

It’s hard to predict. In 2008, nobody was buying anything if they could avoid it, but used car prices skyrocketed because people were willing to go used even if the savings were extremely slim.

Credit is more readily available now, at least for those who didn’t get laid off. But, the fact that dealerships are more or less closed now will throw another variable into the mix.

I used to see those alleged “collector cars” come up for sale pretty regularly. Someone would buy one (Camaro, Mustang, 300Z/350Z, etc). Tie up tens of thousands of dollars for a decade or two, and bemoan the fact their investment appreciation never materialized.

Haven’t seen much of that lately. But, the Camaro in the ad is a perfect example. The original owner obviously and finally cut bait.

I remember sitting in a used one when it wasn't very old. One of the worst interiors I have ever witnessed. Looked like it had been completely removed and then reinstalled with half the fasteners (not that someone did that, but that's how it looked after just a couple of years of use). Not to mention the atrocious plastics and fabrics.

Just got an email from local Hyundai dealer. Stressing that only showroom is closed, but they can still sell. Offering to do everything electronically, then they will deliver the car. Hopefully with some wipes to sanitize from the guy that drove it out! Maybe do that then park in the sun for 3 days just in case.

Kinda curious how desperate they are on price at this point. And hard to imagine they get many sales, especially if they aren’t.

My uncle had a friend with a 1967 Cougar XR7 with less than 5k miles on it IIRC. The problem with buying a time capsule is that you either keep it off the road or resign yourself to visualizing that you are throwing buckets of $100 bills out the window every time you take it for a drive.
