my son got one. but I think it was through the utility company? Or maybe that was my daughter, and my son's house just came with it. They both had some version of that.

The windshield was replaced (oem) today in the Q5. I am told it looks fine, clean installation. It took a little over an hour and done in our driveway. Glad to have that done.

I'm getting an EcoBee thermostat for the new house - my workplace manager recommended it, and so did my HVAC guy. There's apparently a camera accessory along with door sensors. Might get some of that stuff if I like the interface of the thermostat (moving day is a week away, and still a daunting amount of stuff to do).

I’m guessing that since the previous owners didn’t want to install that thermostat in the house they sold to you they figured it made no sense packing it to take to their next house because it would only stay in the box at that house too.

I had the Nest in my previous house for years. It is well worth the money, IMHO. Put 2 in this house. Then, put one in the condo a couple weeks ago. Pretty sure I didn’t pay more than $200 for any of them.

Nope- we bought ours 3 years ago for that price. Obviously, they haven’t depreciated since.

I don’t think that the average person buying these fancy-do-dad devices really care about recovering their purchase cost in fuel savings. It’s more about having the latest technology to perform that function. Plus, the idea that the manufacturer is really selling is how this one device can have other features (cameras, microphones, Wi-Fi etc.) connected to it.

Me personally, I don’t want that but good luck trying to convince a millennial of that.

The kids in Orlando have one also but my son-in-law is a real gadget geek! Their "computer office" is simply amazing since he works from home, e's got like 3 computers and 4 monitors plus my daughter has hers in their for when she wfh. They give off a lot of heat and their cat loves spending time in there also since it's hairless. They picked up a Nest for us but for some reason there was an installation issue, so they returned it.

I have gas heat, hot water heater and dryer. My monthly NG bill averages less $100 a month.
When I go to bed, I turn the thermostat down and turn it back up when I go downstairs in the morning.

I turned off all the eco controls, learning functions etc. I only wanted to keep tabs on the temp while I’m not there. The bonus of being able to change it when we are on the way is a plus too.

What would be the point? If they ever tried that, as impossible as it may be, you would just disconnect the new device and put back the old analog Honeywell from the '60s.

Have nest thermostats and very happy with them. Keep in eco mode most of time. If we notice any fluctuations in temperature and are not home can switch over to heat or cool mode so the process starts prior to us returning.

My new rule is, don't by refurbished or rebuilt products.
Mrs D100 bought a $200 vacuum from Amazon - they don't call it refurbished anymore, it is "Renewed".
I just watched on Marketplace (Cdn consumer show) how Best Buy sells refurbished computers tablets etc and when the experts tested them they didn't perform as well as the new ones....some functions weren't even set up.
So the vacuum arrives, MrsD sets it up, and the motor hardly has any power.
We pack it up, and go to the computer to return it to Amazon.
A little resistance but when I said we were returning this one but would be buying a new one they said they would issue a full credit, which they did immediately. I am sure they check to see how much you buy, and how much you return before taking stuff back - check your past history.
They also said, don't bother sending this one back to them, give it to charity or toss it out. Well, we can save some of the parts.
Now I have to cut up the box it came in.
A few lessons, I'd steer away from "refurbished" etc., and I still like buying from Amazon.

If it doesn't work right don't give it to charity. Why saddle someone else with a defective machine?

Up here there are (or at least used to be pre-covid) large online auctions that were mostly Amazon returns. When they first started I was interested in a couple of things and actually won one time. All of the stuff is in a huge warehouse building and it is amazing that they can even keep track of it all. I presented myself at the pickup desk, showed them by winning bid screen, and someone went off into the depths of the place to get my item. It all seemed rather loosely organized.

Back in the '80s when we had maybe a dozen TV channels to watch even with cable, I got into the habit of watching Motorweek on PBS every Sunday. I did that for years but as time went on I got away from it and haven't watched it in years until today, when I turned on the TV a bit early to watch the F1 pre-race show and saw it was running over on PBS. I was surprised that the host John Davis still looked and sounded pretty much the same after 41 years. Their tech guy Pat Goss seems to be running on fumes, sadly. I didn't recognize any of the other cast from the old days. What an incredible run.

I bought a "refurbished" Dyson vacuum on ebay last year. I think it was really a way they were disposing of unsold stock - the machine was still in all original wrapping and obviously untouched. It has had zero issues.

Unless you grant the utility access to your home network or install a device they provided you, that's not a real concern. I think there are programs where a user can opt-in to such remote control (I think this exists in the mismanaged infrastructure of TX), but there's no way for a utility company to randomly access your devices. A hacker getting into your system to unlock your doors while you're away is more likely.

I wouldn't give it to a charity.

A lot of damaged Amazon items back home end up in a chain of stores called Treasures. The items are on display and you can buy stuff cheap. I go by the store but I don't have any desire to buy broken stuff.

Amazon doesn't lose on the defective vacuum. The vendor takes the hit. Processing returns can be a huge expense for a business. Amazon does little of that.

Selling it online is pretty labor intensive, I doubt if that model could last.

We had a refurbished Dyson before this too, and it worked for a few years. Some items are refurbished by the company and those are probably up to standard. Now it seems companies don't want to bother, they'd rather get rid of the item and let someone else deal with it, and a lot of these guys aren't that good at fixing the problem it had. The cost of a refurbished isn't that different, in fact I think this one was about $40 more for the new one, on a $250 item.

Companies may sell off new items as refurbished when new models come out...they don't want to upset people who paid the full price.

I used to watch Motorweek every week in the 80s, and I really liked it. But, slowly they started reviewing more exotic cars....cars that I would never have a chance of owning, and they lost my interest. I prefer reviews of cars that are in my price and interest range.

That sounds reasonable. Safelite said an OE windshield would cost $1200 for my 2015 E400, about 4 years ago.
A Safelite windshield which would be exactly the same without an MB decal on it would cost $700 to replace.
They have decals on EBay for $5.

That’s a good price for OE. My Volvo was over $1000 with an aftermarket. Rain sense wipers and the safety nanny calibration drove up the cost.

I’m guessing that since the previous owners didn’t want to install that thermostat in the house they sold to you they figured it made no sense packing it to take to their next house because it would only stay in the box at that house too.

It seems like something that will sell for about $60 in about a year from now.
I don’t think that the average person buying these fancy-do-dad devices really care about recovering their purchase cost in fuel savings. It’s more about having the latest technology to perform that function. Plus, the idea that the manufacturer is really selling is how this one device can have other features (cameras, microphones, Wi-Fi etc.) connected to it.

Me personally, I don’t want that but good luck trying to convince a millennial of that.

Isn’t NEST and other controls like it the ones that allow the utilities to turn down your heat remotely “for your own good”? My natural paranoia would also wonder who else gets to see through those cameras.

some refurb stuff could actually be redone. But a lot is stuff that is more open box (like something you opened, decided did not want, and returned it unused). At most, refurbishment is plugging it in to make sure it turns on, and wiping the fingerprints off.

These days refurb means someone returned it, sometimes because they decided they didn't want it but usually because something was wrong with it.
It is too costly to fix these and they aren't new any more so the big companies sell them off at cost or less. It takes time and a certain expertise to find and fix the problem. If it is complicated like a computer or a tablet, even TV it is hard to fix the item and then sell it for less than a new one.
I wanted to check the price of the "Renewed" Vacuum and on the Amazon site it says this item is out of stock, don't know when it will return. They only had 3 1/2 stars, so I think the have a poor record.

I have bought a few reconditioned items before and most were fine...but, I find I have a better chance of coming out ahead if I pay the extra amount and buy new when possible. Less risky, more chance of the warranty holding up, it was put together the way it should be, peace of mind, etc

I worked at an eye center and did 22 cataract cases then got pulled to hospital to help with 4 endoscopy cases. Exhausting day but home by 545 pm.

I worked with the eye surgeon who went to IU then Harvard medical school. A patient was a vice provost at IU and asked him where he went to medical school and he replied "out east" and then "Boston" when pressed. Interesting and humble guy. He always asks how my family is every single time I work with him.

I am still in the hospital. Pain continues to be severe at times. They plan to move me to a rehab facility in the next day or tow,

The procedure took about 4 hours. Don’t know if it was successful yet, but the neurosurgeon said I should start feeling in a day or two. He was pleased with the results and said I should expect a positive result.

I did that for years but as time went on I got away from it and haven't watched it in years until today, when I turned on the TV a bit early to watch the F1 pre-race show and saw it was running over on PBS. I was surprised that the host John Davis still looked and sounded pretty much the same after 41 years. Their tech guy Pat Goss seems to be running on fumes, sadly. I didn't recognize any of the other cast from the old days. What an incredible run.

I still watch Motorweek on on PBS and occasionally on YouTube. However, I find Tom Voelk's Driven a little more entertaining and I prefer to watch that on his YouTube Channel.
